Re: Randoms Thread: March Edition!

  • @MojieJo If you have an ultrasound every 4 weeks, and that's not even every appointment, how often are you going in?  I'd love to have that kind of peace of mind!  @mom2adoodle My OB only sees me every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, and I only get a dating scan and the anatomy scan at ~20 weeks.  From what I gather, unless you're high risk, need one for a specific reason (see PPs), or have a super proactive OB, you'll really only get the two.

For those who have OBs/offices who are not communicating well with you on this stuff, I'd encourage you to call the office with specific questions about what will happen when or have a long list the next time you see your doc! It would drive me crazy if mine wasn't forthcoming about what to expect at appointments and when various things like the anatomy scan would be! There's really no reason they cannot give you this information. It's all pretty standard stuff! Sorry that I'm going into teacher mode, but like I always tell my students, don't be afraid to ask for what you need. ;)
  • On another note, my kiddo is just now waking up at 8am! Woot! Too bad I was up about a thousand times to pee. It would have been a really good night for sleeping.
  • Agreed with @Sporty1216 I get into the mindset of "Oh that's a stupid question, I don't want to bother them" instead of remembering that doctors are employed by YOU. You/your insurance PAYS them. Trust me, they're getting enough money to field a few questions, or send you a print out of appointments, etc.

  • I'm another where they didn't get everything they needed at my first anatomy scan with DD. She wouldn't show her profile (so I got a nice little, creepy pic of her skull instead), and they couldn't see her heart well enough. So they did another at 23 weeks. I wish that one would have been the one I got a DVD of. She was so much more active at that one. I'm already expecting them to not be able to get all the measurements at the anatomy scan this time.

Never be afraid to ask questions! You are your own best advocate and advocating for yourself involves asking as many questions as you need to. If a medical provider doesn't give you the time to answer questions, find a new one.

I was very impressed with my current OB when, at my first appointment, he gave me this spiel about how this is my pregnancy, he works for me and I should never be afraid to tell him what I want out of my pregnancy/labor/delivery. Such a great thing for a doctor to say.

  • @AnnaS930 @mhilpisch10 so annoying. I even uninstalled and redownloaded the app. Oh well.

I don't technically get an US until 20 week anatomy scan, but I paid to go to an elective place and discovered my dates were two weeks off. I told my doc and she was supposed to get me in for a dating us but nothing so far. We booked an elective one again for 18 weeks for sex determination (and to be able to take all three kids with us- they don't let you take in anyone under 12 for the anatomy scan)

First off - Yay for being out of NUK purgatory!!!  That stuff was annoying yesterday and bumping on mobile is hard for me.

Second -  In regards to ultrasounds, my practice hands us a booklet at the beginning that outlines their procedures for doctors appointments and ultrasounds.  This is the plan they follow unless other things come up or you plan on doing the genetic testing.   If this plan was followed, I would've had one scan at 20 weeks.  I received a dating ultrasound at 6 weeks, because according to my LMP I was 8 weeks, but I knew I was only 6 weeks.   I also received one at 12 weeks because I chose to do the genetic testing.  If I hadn't next one wouldn't be until 20 weeks.

I'm assuming @MojieJo gets an ultrasound every 4 weeks because you're having twins.  Is this correct?  Or is that simply common procedure at your practice?
  • @mhilpisch10 I am late seeing your post, but I just wanted to say you're not alone with the embarrassing lady problems. I just started a round of monistat 7 yesterday. This is my second one this pregnancy. I actually cried over it because ever since my first pregnancy I have had recurring infections and this is the worst one I've had in awhile. I wanted to start TMI Tuesday today to ask if anyone else had this problem. Before my first pregnancy I had only had one infection in my life that I knew of and it cleared up on its own. I haven't tried the 7 day monistat before (have tried the 3 day ovules) so I'm hoping it might help more than the prescription cream.

  • I didn't eat much last night because everything sounded really gross and now I'm starving.  At least my lunch buddy agreed to go to lunch early.
  • @jhems776 the same thing happened to me, so I scarfed my lunch. But now my tummy is upset

  • Ugh, I brought leftovers for lunch and now I have zero interest in them, and no good snacks for the afternoon.  I also have an appointment tomorrow morning and would rather not be extremely bloated/uncomfortable for it, so trying to be good today. Wah.

I have an appointment this afternoon so I'm trying to be really good. But I want all the Easter candy.

  • @jabreen I started out going every 2 weeks (since I was coming from an RE and was used to weekly ultrasounds), then switched to every 4 weeks and there have been a couple extra appointments thrown in over the course of the time I've been seeing my OB for a couple of reasons (extra scans and whatnot).

I'll start having ultrasounds every 2 weeks again when I hit 24 weeks and then every week later on.

  • My random rant of today:
For Christmas/Hannukah my inlaws gave hubby and I broadway tickets and a weekend expenses on them in NYC to spend with them. I immediately said to myself "what about Emmett?" We later asked and they said they wanted to spend time with us as adults and hoped we'd get a babysitter.  Well - thanks, but maybe ask one of us before buying tickets?  I have pretty low interest in going... mostly because it's a 6.5 hour car ride without any traffic, and we're talking NYC so let's be honest, it'll be longer than that. And this is just for a weekend, that's a lot of driving!  I've got my parents coming to our house to babysit, and they'll do great, but ugh.

So there are flights from Portland (30 min from me) to NYC, for both of us round trips around $300-500 depending on timing. I wish that could be included in their "all expenses on them" weekend.  I can handle a 1.5 hour flight over 6.5+ hours in the car, but also don't really want to spend the money/have the time restrictions that we have to meet (aka get into NYC at 9:30pm Saturday, and either hustle out of there for a 6pm flight (not gonna happen with a 2pm Sunday show) or hang around for a 10:45pm flight and land at midnight... but if we drove we'd still be getting home around midnight. UGHHHHH.

Please note, I know I'm being ungrateful for this nice and semi-thoughtful gift... but checking to see if this is something we'd want to do would have been nice. For example - 2 years ago we met up with them in Boston for The Book of Mormon for my husband's bday. They asked me to pick a date that worked best and surprise him. It was great.. and only 2 hours away.

End rant.. thanks for listening, dreading this weekend in April as it approaches.

  • @AnnaS930 Ummm I would be totally annoyed with that gift. I know it sounds awful to say one would be annoyed with a GIFT, but seriously, it sounds like they're thinking more of themselves than you with this "gift"—ESPECIALLY since you have to pay your own way. What?! That's nuts. It sounds like a huge pain in the ass and I'd be irritated, too.

  • And I do apologize if I have complained about the trip on here already.. I probably have. It's been a constant irritation in my mind for 3 months now.

@runningisrad - I just don't think they were really thinking. Do they forget we have a 1 year old? What if I simply wasn't ready to leave him for a weekend? I don't know how that's a gift. Here's an idea "Here are broadway tickets, go to the show and we'll watch Emmett while you're there!" Not that taking him would make this less stressful, but it would have been a lot more thoughtful. My husband's father doesn't seem to remember having a baby 28 years ago (I don't know that he participated much), and his wife (husband's step-mother) never had children, nor did her 2 sisters.. so she doesn't have much of a mother's mindset/intuition.

  • @AnnaS930 yeah, that's super inconsiderate. That's something I'd expect from childless friends who don't really know any better, not people who've been parents before!

  • @AnnaS930 I would have been irritated, too. I'm sorry, but it was kind of a selfish gift on their part to be like "your gift is to spend the weekend with us, but, oh, don't bring your kid!" Particularly since this is a grandparent, and you live so far away. I hope you can figure something out that will make it a little easier on you, and that you have a good time. On a side note, what show are you going to?

  • @TheTamedShrew the worst part is it says online to eat less sugar while you have one.
I'm already uncomfortable and I can't eat sugar! Waaaaa!

  • @camichael84 - the show is She Loves Me.. the movie You've Got Mail was based on it I think?  It has some big stars - Zachary Levi (who I only think of as Flynn Rider.. I'm a child at heart), Jane Krakowski, etc.  I think I'd actually really like the show... but it's just farrrrr.  The in-laws live in Western Mass, I think a little under 3 hours from NYC, a little more reasonable.  And obviously have no toddlers to leave at home.

  • @AnnaS930 - Ugh. I'm sorry. I get not wanting to complain about a gift but I also get WHY you're not thrilled. My in-laws have done something similar and I wasn't happy either. Of course, we only had to drive an hour into the Twin Cities but it was a play that I had no interest in (they're extremely religious, it was a religious play and I have chosen to separate that part of my life from them since they are so overbearing about it).

  • @AnnaS930 I get why you're annoyed.  That's a lot to ask of someone with a 15-month old and another on the way!  And I mean a lot to ASK - let alone a lot to EXPECT after already buying tickets as a "gift".  Yikes.  I mean, nice of them to give you a gift and all that but hopefully they'll be a little more considerate in the future.

    @rocky_star Welcome!

  • Thanks for giving me some validation ladies. My husband nods along when I complain to him but wants me to get over it and just go. And yes, maybe after the vent today I can do that... just, ugh. Ok, I'm done. Also, I have bigger things to complain about.. I will be submitting many "dear diary" entries to the MIL thread, that one really really really strikes a cord.

  • I just saw how many posts were in the intro thread and thought no one could possibly keep up with that!

I'm 15w 3d (due Sept 10), but will be having a repeat csec likely around the beginning of September. One other kiddo, DS born Dec '12. I was active back then before what I see everyone refer to as "the mass exodus". Other fun facts.. I live in Ontario, Canada, married since Aug '10, one 10yr old furkid and love to go to as many concerts as I can possibly attend (and afford).

    @AnnaS930 sorry, quote fail!
    Yay! Fellow Canuck :) welcome!
