Re: Randoms Thread: March Edition!

  • @AlwaysAuntNeverMom - With DS, I didn't pre-register until the middle of my 3rd tri. The nurse at my OB office said that they really prefer that you preregister earlier since it streamlines the paperwork if you have to go to the hospital/ER for anything pregnancy related at any time.

I felt like pre-registering at 12 weeks is super early, even at 16 weeks.

ETA: @marajay6 has a good point. With my second, we had to make multiple trips to L&D because she would stop moving for hours at a time. You know, like when you have to count kicks? Well no matter how I layed or what I drank or ate, she would not move or kick at all. Each time I went, I was in the system and didn't have to mess around with forms. They could just get me hooked up to the monitors right away.

  • @marajay6@camichael84 good to know! I think I'll mail it some time around week 23 since at 24 we'll start going  to L&D if anything happens.

  • I agree on individual birth story threads. We did that on my last BMB. I could never keep up with one long thread and then you can't comment on individual stories at all without blowing up the whole thread.

  • Pre-register?!  That's a thing?   Ok so of course it's a thing...just not one I was cognizant of before reading your daily randoms, so thank you! :) This now reminds me that I really should re-read and refresh my mind on that packet of information they gave me at the first appointment.  I keep thinking I don't need to go back to it until it's time for birth classes, but now reading the above, I definitely need to keep looking at it more and make sure I'm set up for everything that needs to be done.
  • I almost feel less prepared for the heading to the hospital part this time around because I won't be taking birthing classes - to be honest, the only really useful part for me last time was the tour of the maternity ward, and I am not signing up for 4 weekly 1 hour classes just for that again! We spent the first week or two going over human anatomy and how a baby grows inside.. snoooooooooooooooooze, but it did make me feel prepped for showing up/where to go/etc. I'll have to ask some questions at OB appointments to be sure I remember the procedure... I don't believe my hospital pre-registers, it's pretty small and my OB is at the hospital so I think I'm in ... I think.

  • @AnnaS930 Check with your hospital - some do L&D tours as a stand-alone for people in your exact same situation who're on their second + pregnancy and have no need to take the full class.  We're going to do it this time - our hospital even allows children on the tour which I think will be helpful for DD just so she can get an idea of what a "hospital" is before we're there, I'm spending the night, she has a sibling...  Too much all at once!

  • @JennM205 - good thinking.  Emmett and I went to a baby/mama group twice a month for his first year of life that was held in the waiting room right outside of L&D... perhaps we'll go again and ask the lactation consultant (who is amazing and buys all the babies cakes on their first birthdays in the group) if we can do a little tour one day!

  • @AnnaS930 Can you take a tour of the maternity ward again this time? I know my hospital will do tours. My hospital does short classes, I think the one I took was less than 2 hours. And that included a tour. I wanted to take it again with my husband, because he didn't get to go the first time. But he refused.

On the topic of pre-registering, my second was born at 34 weeks. I hadn't pre-registered yet. It wasn't a problem. At least, not for me. Maybe it made more paperwork for the nurses? I don't know. I can't remember. But to be honest, I wasn't really thinking clearly at that time. I had pre-eclampsia and I've read that it can affect your brain. Make you kind of spacey and confused. At my 32 week check up I wore 2 different shoes to my appointment. The OB sent me right over to the hospital and I didn't notice that my shoes didn't match until I went home 3 days later.
  • Please laugh at me all you want but I'm Terrible with abbreviations. What is AWing and BTDT?

We we flew in Nov. with our 3 year old and 14 Month old to Disney. We brought our car seat and stroller and checked at the gate. It was nice to have the stroller in the airport. I brought an entertainment bag with different activities for our 3 yo and our younger one sat in my lap and I read him books. We flew southwest--which i recommend with kids

As far as registering I don't think I did until 30 weeks or so...if you don't do it in time they aren't going to turn you away lol
  • @SaraJuul

AW = attention whore.  It is an acronym used to describe when someone creates posts to brag/show off.  If we get too many, it can clog up the board and make it harder to navigate various topics.  That's why we create master threads for ultrasound pictures, sex announcements, etc.

BTDT = been there, done that. A BTDT mom is someone who has already had a baby.  A FTM is a first time mom.

  • @SaraJuul - we are planning a trip to Disney next April, my son will have turned 2 in December, and this baby will be about 7 months. We live in Maine so it's a decent plane trip (or more likely a flight with a connection) but we are so excited. My sister, her husband and their twins who will be 5 are also going, as well as my parents. Should allow for a lot of kiddo time, and some kiddo-free time while the grandparents hang out with them at the resort!

  • @LeahKnits when I flew with my son I carried his seat on. It was a pain in the ass but he slept the whole time on both flights. I know some people are ok with it, but I would never rent a car seat I didn't know the history of, just as I would never check or gate check my car seat. I had to replace my seat after a fender bender in my SUV because it voided the warranty, there's no way I am ok with letting people toss it around in a cargo hold. From when I was researching before we flew I actually think checking it voids the warranty for some car seat brands.

This. I don't judge people who don't get a seat for their child or gate check their seat but it's so much safer to have your child in a car seat. A little turbulence and the child can become a projectile :/

My random is a vent - my boss is driving me insane. I love my job and my boss is decent but when I was hired, about a year and a half ago, it was for a new position/level both at my firm and within my company (I work for a small firm that is part of a national company) and they're still trying to figure out what to do with me. As a result, I'm being held to a different standard than other attorneys and the standards are constantly changing out of nowhere. He flat out admitted that he was holding me to a different standard. His excuse is that he's trying to make me the BEST. Ugh, not fair.

  • @PSUBecky23 - I signed onto my current job as a new program that the State wanted us to run. We did a year of a pilot program and they extended the contract. I like doing my own project, but I don't think my coworkers really know what I do... and my boss also loads a lot of miscellaneous jobs onto my plate that have little/nothing to do with my primary responsibilities. He just asked me if I was heading to "our meeting"... when I asked what it was I told him I don't now anything about the topic nor have I heard of anyone on the invite list, but I'd certainly go if he wanted another body in the room.  He then realized that I have nothing to do with the meeting and said I didn't have to go.  It gets annoying.

  • Thanks for the definitions. I just found the link to all the acronyms, this will be helpful!
@AnnaS930 Disney was great. It was my first time there so I was geeking out. Harry Potter at Universal was my absolute favorite though! We are in WI so it was a 3 1/2 hour flight. We opted for a direct flight which saved a lot of stress I think. You guys will have so much fun!
  • @SaraJuul - I last went a couple years ago (made my husband go for our honeymoon), went maybe 3 or 4 times growing up. I just can't wait to see it all through the kids' eyes. We will most likely need a connecting flight (our direct flights go to the smaller airport in Orlando that Disney magical express doesn't pick up at) and so far we are thinking the Magical Express is more important than the flight.. we'll see how we feel as it gets closer

  • @AnnaS930 When I was pregnant with DD, a can of coke worked better at knocking out any dull headaches than Tylenol did!  The really tough headaches couldn't be touched by some caffeine (but let's be real - the Tylenol was moot on those, too).

@PSUBecky23 Sometimes it sucks to be good at your job.  Sounds like that's a little bit of what's going on with your position.  It's all nice and flattering but, really, who wants to be held to higher standards than their peers?

  • @AnnaS930 @JennM205 thanks for the commiseration. It also doesn't help that I'm the youngest person, by far, at my office. So that comes with a list of other issues. I do love my job but needed to get that out.

I just pre-registered at the hospital. They want us to do it by 12 weeks, but I guess I am a little superstitious, so I waited. This definitely made it feel real...you know because the nausea and expanding waistline just wasn't doing it. Kidding, but yikes, filling out all this paperwork definitely makes it feel official.
Wait, I was supposed to do that by 12 weeks? Oops! They gave me the form on week 8 but didn't tell me when to send it so I figured I'd do it around week 34  :p
Ha! I'm still picking the hospital! My doctor is only full-time available at one hospital, which is 51 minutes away, and on-call occasionally at another hospital 15 minutes away. DH already thought 15 minutes was far (we have a hospital closer, but they have a bad rep and my doc advises against going there strongly- she used to work there and saw some not-so-good stuff, not to mention it's a one minute drive from my MIL- NO THANKS!). I want my doctor who I love and trust in the room with me for my first baby, so poor DH will have to suffer with me through a 51 minute car ride. That's just how it's going to be lol! At least for the first kiddo!

That totally sucks, and it's also totally unfair!

I know the feeling. I started my job about 8 months ago, and my boss promised me when she hired me that I would get a big raise and promotion to the actual job that I was filling, which she said, and I quote verbatim, "that will happen very quickly, so that's your bargaining chip with your husband" since I had to take a lower salary to get this job that I love. Here we are 8 months later, I've been kicking butt and taking names, and still no raise. I brought it up and she's now crying poverty (due to her own overspending last year), even though she's a billionaire with several homes across the globe. The same day she denied my raise, she was showing me pictures of her beach home in Virgin Gorda. *sigh* She knows I'm pregnant and working a second job 5 days a week just to make ends meet now. The only reason I'm not blowing up is because it seems she will pay me through maternity leave (which is not required where I work because of the small staff and pitiful lack of rights for new mothers in this darn country), so I'm leaving it alone for now- but within 30 days of my return to work date, I need that raise or I'm-a walkin. Definitely perusing other opportunities while I'm out on leave.

  • @SarahMConnors I get it! We were undecided and just asked our OB for his opinion. The hospital we're going to is a good 30 mins away without traffic but it's got a children's hospital and the best nicu and team of pediatric doctors in the region so he strongly encourages delivering there. Everything has looked great with our LO so far but I prefer being prepared so I'm going by his judgment. We're touring the maternity ward soon!

  • @AlwaysAuntNeverMom that sounds perfect! My doc gave us a whole folder of info, classes held at the hospital, a list of all doctors on staff with photos and background info, etc. It's one of the best hospitals in the state, so I know we would be in amazing hands no matter what there. I think it's worth the drive. Poor DH is just throwing in the towel- he knows it's all about what I want and feel comfortable with. Smart man lol!
