@brookert615 YUP. makes me so mad. I am going to work a unit into my women's lit class next semester where we talk about all the stuff we learned and never learned in sex ed in high school--bc I remember learning about blue balls. BLUE BALLS. But god forbid we learn about ovulating! The patriarchy, amirite?!
@kagesstarshroom Yeah we learned about BLUE BALLS TOO! Ugh! Informing people about ovulating is kind of fun, though? Do you feel that way, too? lol!
But my endocrinologist had quite a theory though about me. Like I was put on BC super early because I was having painful, irregular periods yet no one actually dug into the root of the problem when it could've been treated in a better manner?
@brookert615 YES, I feel like... the female reproductive system knowledge fairy lol. Gather round, people with uteruses, and learn about the amazing things your body does that you never knew!
Also, um: this is for the Oreo lovers. Spoiler for screen shot!
I recently came clean to my mom about having trouble ttc, and I ended up saying how crazy it is that there are all these cues that bodies give to track fertility signs. My mom just looked at me for a while, and said, “well, yea. I knew that.” Ughhhhh. Pass the dunce hat over here then because I just found out a few months ago. 🙄
@begging4abump What! I'm surprised that she did know! I'm about to make an infographic for my mom because I feel like I keep having to explain things lol.

You guys. I seriously lasted 1.5 weeks not TTC. We have an adoption orientation on the 5th and a lunch date with one of my law school friends who does private adoption next Friday, but in the meantime... I managed five days of NTNP, but have done OPK's the last two days, then put my Ava on last night, and just broke down and started putting my data in FF. I don't know if I should be excited or ashamed of my complete lack of self control.
@kagesstarshroom bahaha I also consider myself the female reproductive knowledge fairy in my friend circle right now. I'm amazed at how many people come to me for advice/help, and it's scary because I'm not an expert at any of this by any means and have no formal medical knowledge/background. I've just spent enough time researching and learning about these things and having been 'round these parts for a year now, I've picked up a few things that the general population doesn't know. I'm shamelessly proud of my new reputation as the fertility fairy, but also pretty disappointed in the education system and society in general for not teaching kids any of this stuff. I, too, learned about blue balls and masturbation, and about being able to get pregnant by sitting on a toilet seat (which is even more absurd because we all know how mythical gender-neutral restrooms are so there ain't nobody jizzing on my toilet set in the women's bathroom FFS) yet nothing about FAM/how ovulation works/etc.

brookert615 I feel like shoving people on BC is the 'catch all' solution to female problems, rather than actually trying to determine the problems. And since female health in schools is basically "tampons or pads?" we don't know enough to ask for what we need, or even explain what is 'wrong.'

@brookert615 Come at me with that infographic! My Mom told me how poorly educated she was on all things TTC/being KU & was proud of me for all the stuff I have (had to) learn. She felt really bad when (((TW loss))) I had my cp bc she just didn't know what to do/say at all bc of how little we learn about our bodies. And then I FELT BAD too bc I didn't want her to be upset for not being able to help. Aarrrggghhh this lack-of-education stuff gets me enraged! (((end TW)))
@kagesstarshroom Lol!!! I might make them, who knows? That's good your mom was receptive. That is so tough, though! Lack of education is frustrating. I say it was super early getting put on BC but I was 18 because my mom's logic was that I wouldn't engage in extracurricular activities if I wasn't on it? So that was roughly six years where I had to call out of school because AF for me was waking up, throwing up, going through pads/tampons at a unusually fast rate while being hooked up to a heating pad 24/7 to just "get through". I assumed it was "normal" because what did I know??? UGHHH!
@kagesstarshroom honestly I never really thought about it like that!
The American sex ed curriculum is horrible! I've seen some of the posts about grown men that have no idea what really happens during a period or what actually needs to happen for conception to occur. But I'm not sure how things are going to change if we continue to treat topics like sex ed as taboo or thinks it's not proper to discuss them. Just look at the STD rates in this country! There is no reason why as a country with as many resources as us should have such an increase. I'm stepping off my soap box now.
Most of my friends are older or have kids or are in the medical field or are male but even so we never really talked about TTC and everything that goes with it. What really surprised me is how many firefighters and their wives have gone through fertility treatments and the men are surprisingly knowledgeable on things. It's been great for MH to have some people to talk to about the male side of things and they all admit to feeling helpless at times.

Late to the party. I also think our health classes in school are extremely lacking! I didn't really know anything until I joined here in 2015. I bought TCOYF back then and I fully plan to teach my *TW* daughter *end TW* and any possible future daughters (and son's) what is actually going on in their bodies, I will probably use the book too.
It is really frustrating that conventional medicine tends to just slap the birth control bandaid on problems that can be fixed by getting to the root cause. They are generally super far behind in up to date research and only practice what they learned in school ages ago. Then the ones that are more progressive and up to date generally have their hands tied by their employers, insurance companies and big pharma.
I have nieces that turn 11 this year. I was talking with them and their moms. We got on the subject of sex ed since they had just gone through it at school. I gave them the gist of different types of CM and when they typically occur as well as temperature rises after ovulation. I may have overwhelmed them but I didn't want them to be like me and almost 30 when they finally learned all this stuff. Hopefully it will stick and they'll remember that for later on.
Me (while scrolling through my FB feed): Hmm... why is that guy buzzing potatoes? Is this a potato peeling hack I am not aware of? ..........OH! Why is this showing up as one of my ads???
But really I'm just mostly disappointed it's not a potato peeling hack. I hate peeling potatoes.
....but I'll choose it over buzzing balls 10/10 times.

@spacemountaineer I love you. When I started having CM (around 12) I had no idea what it was and thought something was wrong with me. I had sex ed in 6th grade and an entire year in 7th grade, and it was never explained. I finally accepted that whatever it was, I wasn't going to die from it and just kind of kept it to myself. I didn't figure out what it was until I was in my 20's and had, no joke, been mortified about my "issue" for years until that point.
I think not only is the lack of sex ed in school disgraceful, but the way it's taught needs a complete overhaul. The actual science of the reproductive system needs to be taught.
@brookert615@kagesstarshroom OMG YES...I tried to put the below in a spoiler for somewhat TMI but I swear it's not working the past couple days! You just highlight the text you want in the spoiler and then hit "spoiler" in the menu to the left of emojis right?
Anyway kind of an icky word in here:
For one thing, why all the talk about "discharge" when a lot of "discharge" is actually CM which our bodies are supposed to produce in order to reproduce!! I feel like "discharge" and my period were the main things I knew about being a woman as a preteen/teenager, and both seemed sucky. Just tell us what the stuff is and make sure we know it's normal to have it (and of course that there is some stuff that indicates infection - just not that that's the *main thing* you should know about the fluids your body produces every month). Tracking all this stuff now can be a lot, but I've also found it super interesting! And frustrating that my body was doing all this the whole time and I just thought "I just have to have a sense of when AF is coming, the rest of the month isn't important."
@whitealbum29 Yeah, notice how for women it's "discharge" like it's something dirty and for men it's semen - even though both serve the same purpose. Young women should be taught the difference between CM (normal) and discharge (may be symptom of a problem).
@dpchickens - 100% about BC being the catchall for all women's health problems. It's infuriating. In college I had a male friend who just assumed all women went on BC to "regulate their cycles" (uh, indefinitely??) b/c that was the case for his sister. I hate to think of a young guy thinking women's natural rhythms are messed up in some way and need to be "regulated"!
@whitealbum29 Here's how to do a spoiler below in the spoiler! It sounds like you're doing it right though! I agree! Just like @ruby696 I thought something was wrong and just kept to myself.
This is probably all way too tmi but hey, internet anonymity right? Haha. To go along with this, I remember at some point before marriage/ TTC and actually learning about my body, I asked my mom if it was normal that I randomly had mucus (I thought it was when I 💩 haha, I had no idea where it was coming from...) and she was just like “uhhh yep” and changed the topic. She probably knew what I was talking about. It’s so embarrassing to think about now. I also wish I still produced EWCM like that...
@b_1029 I'm so glad we are all talking about this stuff now--I hope the younger generation will benefit from our later realizations.
@shamrocandroll I was so mad when I read TCOYF as well. Still mad about all of this lack of knowledge until now stuff.
@whitealbum29 I never experienced BC as a catchall heal bc I got migraines at a young age and never could find a good bc bc they wouldn't give me one that had estrogen in it bc of the migraines--BUT, I was always told, anytime I called and had a question about my reproductive system or anything related to it "oh that's normal." that was ALWAYS the answer it seemed--so I stopped calling/asking questions.
What a timely conversation because my fourth grade girls had their growing up program today. Coincidentally, one of them came up to me yesterday to tell me that the reason she went to the nurse the day before was her stomach hurt and she started bleeding. She had no idea it was her period and didn’t have any pads because she either didn’t tell her mom the month before or her mom didn’t give her pads to keep in her backpack / help her try to predict when her new cycle would start. She didn’t even really explain to her what was happening. She just told her to wait until the program at school. Now luckily, I had pads in my classroom for them along with the deodorant I got as part of a fundraiser to get age and school-appropriate puberty books (American girl has a few plus others from other publishers if anyone wants a list.) and other books to empower girls. You could tell she felt relieved that I had something for her and that she didn’t have to feel embarrassed to talk with me about it. I told her it could last around five days, but might be shorter since she’s younger. I almost wanted to give her a calendar to have her mark it down so she can predict when it might happen in June so she isn’t caught off guard in school again. Her culture (and that of many of my students) makes the concepts of puberty and fertility very taboo. Some of their moms told me they thought they were dying because it wasn’t taught to them at all in their birth country. I think they’re mortified when watching American TV with our tampon, pad, Viagra, etc. commercials. Sometimes they Google instead of asking and it takes them into deeper stuff than they need to know at their age. The lack of basic knowledge makes teaching about animal and plant reproduction / genetics hard and awkward. Considering kids from some areas start experimenting and getting KU at like 12 and 13, we need way more education for them.
That being said, I’m one of five girls. Although I’m the oldest, I was the third to get AF and it wasn’t until I was 14. It was so irregular and heavy that someone should have noticed something was off. It wasn’t until I got a blood clot in my wrist that they realized it wasn’t something that just BC would treat. You’d think my mom would have taught me more, but she didn’t even have to think about TTC. We were all oopses. I learned from Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret instead. *sigh*
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*
@ruby696 I had pretty much the same experience with CM. I was so embarrassed and worried something was wrong with me until I was 26 and started TTC and learned it was normal and actually a good thing!
It is sad what they choose to teach/not teach at school. If I hadn’t come here I don’t know if I ever would have learned about my cycle. Even when I told my dr I was going to start TTC he was just like have lots of sex.

I agree as well that sex Ed needs to be changed and everything needs to be explained.
About BC, I had a cyst on my left ovary for 10+ years and didn’t have a normal period until I was 24 years old. I then bled for 18 months, every single day. I talked about this before but one of the solutions my dr tried to pitch to me was to take 3 birth control pills a day for 2 weeks. I did and it made me SUPER sick. I was already incredibly sick but it amplified it and didn’t make the bleeding stop. (I would soak thru a jumbo pad and ultra tampon within 45 minutes and the solution I was given was bed rest) girls need to learn how to advocate for their own health. Im not saying guys have it easy but I dealt with that bleeding for 18 months. Went to my dr every month minimum and it took them 18 months to figure it out. But I found a lump in my bfs testicles and he went to the drs on a Tuesday, had an ultrasound on the Thursday (it was rushed, I had to wait weeks for my ultrasounds) and on Thursday or Friday he had a diagnosis and surgery. I’m so thankful it all happened that fast for him because that surgery saved his life of course. I was just so shocked how fast it happened for him and how long it took me to finally convince the 4th dr I saw to finally do surgery and take out the cyst.
@verydisgruntledpelican0091 dang that’s pretty crazy that no doctors would take out your cyst when it was causing that terrible of symptoms for that long! yikes.

@NYTino24 that's wonderful that you were able to help her when she really needed it. It's sad that you had to be the one to help her during what can be a scary time but I'm sure she was grateful to have you.
I agree. They finally took me seriously when I developed PICA from being so anemic (shocking hey?) and became suicidal. I will forever be thankful that one dr finally agreed with me that the cyst needed to come out. I blame a lot of what I went thru on the fact that theirs so little research on PCOS and doctors just don’t know enough.
@verydisgruntledpelican0091 wait, so they knew about the cyst t and that it was there and they didn't think it could be a problem?????

@inthewoods23 the cyst was ALWAYS known since I was 16 years old. They said surgery would be the last option (issue with Canadian healthcare. Sure it’s free but you have to SUFFER before they Will cut) so I was forced to try different medications, wait it out, stay on bed rest for 6 months. I was fired from a job because I missed so much time. Not their fault but also not mine. My (thankfully now ex) bf at the time cheated on me because of course I couldn’t even think of sex. I lost around 50lbs. I was so so so sick. Wanted to drink bleach because of the PICA. Worst time of my life.

*sigh*

It is sad what they choose to teach/not teach at school. If I hadn’t come here I don’t know if I ever would have learned about my cycle. Even when I told my dr I was going to start TTC he was just like have lots of sex.

(I would soak thru a jumbo pad and ultra tampon within 45 minutes and the solution I was given was bed rest)
girls need to learn how to advocate for their own health.

I agree. They finally took me seriously when I developed PICA from being so anemic (shocking hey?) and became suicidal. I will forever be thankful that one dr finally agreed with me that the cyst needed to come out. I blame a lot of what I went thru on the fact that theirs so little research on PCOS and doctors just don’t know enough.

so I was forced to try different medications, wait it out, stay on bed rest for 6 months.
