Re: May Randoms

  • @brookert615 I have no idea what Primanti's is...

@inthewoods23 I refer to the water cooler style kind as a bubbler, because it totally makes sense in that context, since it bubbles!

@kagesstarshroom My coworker is from NJ and says "wudder" and I will never stop making fun of him for it.

@inthewoods23 Midwesterner here too. I'm with you on the 'ope'! However I disagree with the bubbler. I'm good with people calling it a bubbler or drinking fountain, but it is NOT a water fountain. I'm pretty sure most people outside of Wisconsin and it's borders don't know what cheese curds are either.

  • @inthewoods23 @m6agua New Englanders say bubbler, too.  Or at least Bostonians do.  And I love cheese curds, but I also live pretty close to Canada.  Mmmmm, poutine!

    @inthewoods23 Yeah okay - that's dumb lol.

@whitealbum29 Aww! My BIL did that and he's from Texas! He always made fun of us northerners lol. Thankfully he taught me how to make some bomb guac and pico!

@shamrocandroll Love some cheese curds and poutine :)!

  • @shamrocandroll not all new englanders. From ct here and I’ve never called it a bubbler.
  • m6agua  Actually, my dad was raised outside Smicksburg, PA (Western PA Amish country - Like Lancaster, but much smaller) and they make cheese next to the old family farm... so cheese curd is AMAZING... but super difficult to find where I live now.

  • @m6agua I am with @bows22 have NEVER heard bubbler before in my life. Water fountain it is. ...And I hold true to the idea that "everyone is right" in terms of dialect stuff like this! And I have been to Minnesota (my fam's storied history is actually very Minnesotean!) so I do *know* what cheese curds are and have had them--they actually have them on the menu at this beer garden downtown (I live in Louisiana) that serves mostly German-style food?

@shamrocandroll I feel like there are certain ppl in my life who can get away w/ making fun of me for my "wudder" pronunciation, but most of the time I am just like " YOU say it wrong! ::huffs::" haha.
  • In Boston it's "bubblah".
  • It doesn't bubble people! Therefore it can't be a bubbler! This is the hill I will die on!

I do hate when people say water fountain since that covers more than the ones you can drink from.

I don't eat a lot of cheese curds, but they are good! And Culver's is one of the greatest things to come out of WI. #wisconsinproud

Now if only the government would make coverage for infertility a requirement... Otherwise it's pretty good living here 🙂

@begging4abump Yes! If they are quality, fresh cheese curds they should squeak. If they are fried cheese curds they do not squeak.  ;)

  • @b_1029 @celticknotfire I live in a place where said beverage is referred to as a "cold drink." WHAAAAT.
  • @emeraldduchess Yes, good point!  Bubbluh is how you would say it in Boston!

@inthewoods23 Fun fact: In Rome, all of the water that comes out of water fountains is fresh and drinkable, thanks to their aqueduct system!  This felt very strange to me, coming from a place where they often put chlorine in water fountains to keep them from getting too gross.

Also, when I almost run into someone, I say more of an "Oop!" (sometimes "whoop") than "Ope" but I do hear people say it "ope" here and had no idea that was a regional thing.

My dad was born in Connoquenessing (Butler County) and lived there as a kid. I know I'm not one of the cool kids (born and raised in California), but I feel like maybe I'm a little bit (tiny bit) cool by association? Maybe? No? Okay, thought I'd try.
  • @whitealbum29:  I'm from southern US and use "might could" as an answer about plans/tasks.  "Want to meet for dinner later this week?"  - "Oh, I might could do that!  Let me check!"

Also - I tend to draw out the long "i" in words --- it almost becomes an "A" sound???  "iiiiiiaaaace" for ice, Spriiiiiiaaate for Sprite, etc.  It gets worse when I'm drinking or talking to someone from my home town?
  • @kagesstarshroom I did not know that, but I do not live in an area where they are prevalent.   They're not in a union, are they???  I didn't realize non-union workers can strike...

@kagesstarshroom say what now? do you mean I’m going to have to speak to someone to get to the airport?
  • @bows22 You should be able to get one, but that's considered "crossing the picket line"--so if I were you, I'd try to get a "real" cab. But that's up to you!

@shamrocandroll HM... I think anyone can strike, they just aren't guaranteed the right to strike? Like, if you strike when you are in a union, you have protections? But let's say I organized a strike at the movie theater in Boston where I used to work (I used to joke about how we should all just leave lol ), we could have all been fired? I am not sure if Uber/Lyft are unionized.
  • @kagesstarshroom I just googled it, and apparently it's only in select cities?  And apparently it's also being done strategically right before Uber goes public on Friday.  Interesting!  I know people who have driven for Uber/Lyft and often lost money on rides.  I don't understand the logistics well enough to really have a strong opinion... I just know when we go on vacation to major cities, they come in very handy!

@kagesstarshroom @shamrocandroll I don’t think they are even employees (which is probably part of their issue)
  • @whitealbum29 Hi from Texas. Yes I’ve heard those phrases you speak of. No, I don’t use them. They are more common in the rural areas.

Agree with @lulu1180 about weekly vs monthly random threads, there's clearly a lot to cover!
