  • Does anyone have tips for remembering all these acronyms 😫

i keep going back back to the “welcome” thread to reference but there are sooooo many acronyms!!🤯

    TIA 😘
  • @jaclynnb24 a lot of the acronyms just come with time. I still have trouble with some not so common ones and I’ve been here for a while. Did you have any specific questions?
  • @jaclynnb24 have you posted in the latest Newbie intro thread? It helps us get to know you 🙂

I'll save you the trouble since a lot of people mess this one up - PNV is prenatal vitamin

  • varimama  No idea about theknot not having a waiting period since I've been here forever. But I think TB is easier to navigate and see the board structure on an actual computer, whereas the phone is a bit more wishy-washy with that. I also think that nowadays people are so used to getting on an app or whatnot on their phones and sending something off into the ether and expecting instant gratification, that they just assume everything is like that.

  • @kbrown2385 I’m getting the hang of some. You are definitely right! I think it will take time. For now I screenshot the whole glossary and just go to it to reference lol no questions really, at least not yet 😉

@inthewoods23 I saw the newbie thread I think for 5/1. I didn’t want to jump in cause I felt I was too late. I thought I would wait for a newbie thread for this week but haven’t seen one yet. & good to know 😉 thanks for that tip 👍🏻 I have been lurking for 4 weeks now and still feel lost trying to decipher the acronyms lol

    thank you both so much
  • @jaclynn24 I am pretty sure I posted a newbie thread for this week! I referred endlessly to those acronyms when I first got here--the longer you're here, the easier they are to get.
  • @varimama I was a knot member who posted to knot boards (in 2013), but still had a bump waiting period (in 2018)! included years in case that has something to do w/ it.
  • @kagesstarshroom I will scroll through again. Maybe I scrolled right passed it. And good to know I’m not the only one 😉 thank you
  • @dpchickens I just caught up on 30+ posts on this thread, so I know I’m super late on this, but your “jagoff” comment gave this #filthadelphian a good smirk. 😂 how did I not notice all yinz are all from the ‘burgh before last week? Also, mh told me to add in a yoy yoy (?) I think. He’s really loving playing up his hometown vernacular bc I’ve mentioned this forum to him.

  • I really need to go visit Pittsburgh, I don't think I knew that it's known for its language quirks! I was there just once I think, like 15+ years ago for a college visit. The "needs done" thing sounds vaguely familiar but didn't know it was a Pittsburgh thing.
  • @dpchickens Everything is a lie. I'm guilty of those, too!  :disappointed:

@shamrocandroll Yinz guys can come anytime! We can get a Primanti's sammich n'at? Maybe you can teach us proper English, too?

  • @chichiphin I LOVE GRITTTTY. I'm a Philly-area native, lived in the city 6 years before moving to Louisiana. Gritty is the best thing to happen to Philly in my too-long absence. Love Philly, misssss Philly. DH hates all things sports but loves Gritty--as we all I hope know by know I'm a die-hard Eagles fan & will root for all the other teams from the area, esp. if they're in the playoffs! (Sixers looked terrible last night, might I add.)
  • @shamrocandroll We can compare notes :D! It was actually a shock to me to see that there's no Primanti's near Philly. I laughed a bit because it looks like there's a distinct radius around Philly that is a no-Primanti's zone  :D. The closest one is about an hour away!

  • I pronounce water funny, from being from the Philly/South Jersey area--that's about it, but it's uNDENIABLE. When I live in Boston (& still today some places!) waiters would be like "wait, you want a what" and I'd be like "WATER" and they'd be like "I'm sorry what?" oooo it was the worst. There's no wrong way to pronounce something in terms of dialect differences! & now I'm an English PhD student soooo come at me, wait-people.

  • Re: regional dialects....my SO is from Texas and my favorite phrase he uses occasionally is "might could/might should." "We might could go to the store" = "we might be able to go to the store." Is this common? I was totally unfamiliar when I met him and think it's so odd/interesting/endearing.
