Names you actually want opinions on

Spinning off from this week's FFFC...

This is the thread where you can post your baby names and get honest feedback.

A few ground rules...
There's a fine line between being snarky and being mean. Let's try to keep things friendly
It's ok to offer up the same name with different spellings. You might get some snark though for things like extra vowels or intentionally incorrect spelling of a common name.
Make sure you're really ok with getting the group's opinion before you post! If you're in love with the name and dead-set on it, maybe just post in the original Names thread

  • I have always loved the name Rainy Day lastname. Would that be a decent name for job interviews? I know if she were an adult today, it would be laughed at but in 15-20 years would it be that bad?

  • @princesslockness I don't think Rainy is a "bad" name, per se, but it's definitely NMS. I know a Rainey. Not a fan of Day as a MN.

Hard pass.  Sounds like a stripper name to me.  Sorry.
  • I was thinking it would be more western/rancher style.

  • For a girl:
    Matilda
    Anne
    Ramona

    For a boy:
    Spencer
    Emmett
    Simon

No middle names for any of them yet
Love your boy names.  Matilda isn't bad.  Would you use a nick name?  I'm not a huge fan of Ramona, but not because there's anything wrong with it, just not my style.  Anne's okay - a little bland but completely normal and fine.
  • @mrsbubbles-2 I love Matilda and Simon!!

  • @msmonalisavito 100% serious. Its just an idea. I'm totally leaning more towards Fallon or Gwendolyn, but I still think about it regularly.

    In that case, I'd pass.

    Although I love Gwendolyn!

I'm from a ranching family and it just sounds like the weather to me.

  • That sib set would be too much for me, but old fashioned names also aren't my style.

  • @juliebird6 I adore the sibset but separately, Mabel and Hazel are a little rhymey.  But if that doesn't matter to you, I'd go for it.

  • @juliebird6 - I like Tilly for a nickname for Matilda. Is it weird? It definitely sounds more baby to me than a nickname she could grow up with...

@princesslockness - Rainy Day isn't my style. Nymbler spit out Rosalie and Violet as similar names.

  • @mrsbubbles-2 Love Tillie for a nickname. I think that's so cute.

@msmonalisavito I can't decide if the rhyming bothers me.  I come from a family of rhyming names and it never bothered any of us, but I'm not sure I want to repeat the pattern.  We still have time to decide since we don't even know if it's a boy or a girl.
  • @princesslockness when I hear the name Rainy I think of the Friends episode where Ross and Rachel are tying to think of names and Rachel suggests Rain. Ross says "Rain? Rain. Hi, my name is Rain. I have my own kiln and my dress is made out of wheat."

I don't mean that in a snarky way at all, I'm just a huge Friends fan so that's the first thing that comes to mind. It's a hard pass for me.

Ok so I feel the snark coming on for one of my girl names:

    Eleanor
    Cora
    Evelyn
    Raelynn

Middle name for a girl will be Joyce after my maternal grandmother. I have a Leo and and Ethan so I'm looking for something that fits when saying all 3 names.

Love all of them except Raelynn (which is the name I assume you were expecting snark for).
  • Yup! haha. I never would have even considered that name but I heard it the other day and I actually liked it. I can't tell if the spelling is right, I'm definitely one that hates the replacement of vowels and such, I hate weird unique spellings of names, so I'm just not sure. But when I say it together with my boys names I still really like it!

  • @calimom2524 I get that. Love Friends! I'm not that hippy at all, but can it happening from a kid of mine.

Personally I love Evelyn with your boys' names. Raelynn is also cute, but maybe doesn't fit as well.

Might not be weird to use Rain/Rainn as a first name and then call them Rainy.  I wouldn't do the MN though.  I mean it flows, but most people find actual rainy days to be a total bummer, so I wouldn't want that to be the first thing they thought of when they heard my kid's name.

I do also agree that Rainy Day sounds like a stage name.  I mean would it affect a job interview?  Probably not, as most people don't include their MN on their resume, but I still think Rainn sounds more generally professional than Rainy as a FN.  Or maybe Reina/Rayna for a girl with NN Rainy.
  • @mrsbubbles-2 I LOVE the name Ramona! That is so so cute.

@calimom2524 Cora is my favorite out of all those names! I rarely hear it and I think it is so cute.

we have a DD named Blake, and her middle name is Ashlyn (also my middle name)
we are expecting another girl and have her first name chosen, Evan, but my question is should we give her the middle name Ashlyn? Or is two girls and I with the same middle name just too much? I want her to have a feminine middle name and I just can't think of anything with meaning.

I also liked Evan Joan, Joan is my husbands grandmothers name. But my whole family is steering us toward using the name Ashlyn for her middle name again. Would you think its weird to share a middle name with your mom and sibling?
  • Okay I need opinion on this.  We're debating Charles Frederick after both of our grandfathers.  Mine was Charles and he just passed in November and we found out about baby 2 days before his funeral.  My absolute favorite person.  Would probably nickname Charlie as that's what my grandfather went by.

the problem? Well when I was 20, we got a cat that I still own and his name is Charlie.  So he's 13 and will most likely die in up to 6-7 years.  So is it weird to have a Charlie the cat and Charlie the kid? LMAO.  I obviously wasn't thinking about potential kid names when I was naming a pet.
  • Why Evan as a first name? Its way too masculine for me to put as a first. Middle, yeah ok, but not a first.

Also 3 Ashlyns in one house, middle or not is too much IMHO.

I would not reuse a middle name.  I think it's okay that you and your daughter share the name, but I would absolutely not give the same middle name to your next kid.
  • @missybutler94 - ditto @princesslockness. All 3 same MN is too much for me. Is there something similar that you could go with?
@scottishlass1213 - I say go for it. It's not like the cat will know and it'll be a funny story to tell the kiddo when they're older. My sister is Jessica and the next-door neighbors where we grew up had a dog names Jessica. So we always joke that our parents named her after the dog :)

I agree about Ashlyn...it seems weird to give the same MN to everyone.  DD2 has my MN from birth (which I dropped when I got married), but DD1 has my grandmother's name as her MN.  It's not weird that hers is different.

I am just not a fan of using male names for girls, but you already have a female Blake so it would be weird to go super feminine for your other daughter.  What about something that is more unisex or just not as strictly feminine but still used mostly as a girl's name?  Morgan, Paige, Sloane, etc?
