Re: Randoms and Questions 1.16 - 1.22

  • @Squirtgun wishing well for your grandma!

Has anyone else had to manage pain with painkillers during pregnancy before and had it be fine? Like I know it's fine but reading it on medical websites isn't the same as hearing from other wise mamas.
    Ditto @Squirtgun!

I had a few instances over the course of my pregnancy with my now 3 y.o. son, in which I took Tylenol for multiple days in a row, with no ill effects.

In this pregnancy, earlier on, my regular doc prescribed me 2 drugs that were class C, and I was extremely hesitant to take them. I called my OB & she said that a healthy me leads to a healthy baby, so that was the takeaway I remembered.

I'd take it, if it were me. In fact, I have some major hip pain happening, and have taken Tylenol like 4 times recently. And especially if your mouth pain (I feel for you, truly!) is driving you to a place of not being able to talk, or eat, or function, then I'd say the benefits outweigh the risks, and the Tylenol would help take the edge off & get you back to functional status.

  • @OmegaRose3, they also found an EIF when I had my second trimester scan and absolutely no other soft markers were found. I happened to have my ultrasound at maternal fetal monitoring because I'm 35 and my OB refers anyone 35 and up to MFM for their ultrasound. The MFM OB said that since I'd already had the Harmony blood test done (NIPT) and the results showed the lowest risk for genetic abnormalities possible, that finding the EIF alone was of basically no significance. She said that had I not already had that NIPT done, that would have been the next step. Since I already had it, I was released from MFM with no further monitoring. My regular OB also re-confirmed that finding the EIF alone in combination with a negative NIPT is no big deal.

    Hope this is reassuring!

  • @SKZW thank you! that is a good thought to takeaway and I am taking it.

Sorry to to hear about your hip pain, I hope you are managing well  <3
  • @clebl24

I had a heck of time weaning DD and ended up nursing her before bedtime until she was 2.  I eventually had DH take over bedtime to drop that session.  I was nursing her to sleep, so my first step was to nurse her and then have DH take over before she fell asleep.  After that, I had him do the whole thing for awhile and it really didn't take too long. It's just a hard process both actually and emotionally.

  • @march2008 Definitely reassuring to hear. My OB didn't mention any other soft markers on the phone and DH and I are low risk as far as genetic anomalies go. It's hard not to panic when you hear that there is a variation or something out of the normal, but I'm hoping for the best and waiting for my level II U/S on Feb 7 to answer my questions.

    @RainyDays86 Sending thoughts your way!

@Squirtgun I hope all is well with your grandmother. I'm sorry you and your family are going through this.

@mrsrep123 DD just got over a cold with the same symptoms. Vicks baby rub helped along with lots of naps and warm baths. I hated to see her sick, but at 1.5, there's not much I could do other than try to comfort her. Hopefully your DS will be back to normal in a couple days as well.
  • @RainyDays86 I hope everything goes smoothly today.
@Squirtgun I hope your grandfather has a very speedy recovery.

My question: has anyone had movement that literally just causes pain. I'm 25+5 and today this baby has been going nuts. He also will get in a comfortable position that is causing constant pressure on the outside of my stomach. If anyone else has had this have you been able to get baby to move and relieve the pain? I have a posterior placenta so it does cause baby to be pushed forward some, so this could be part of the reason.

Dont get me wrong I LOVE feeling the baby move, but I've been miserable for the last two hours at work because of the constant pressure. I've tried rubbing the spot to encourage him to move, tried sitting in different positions, drank water, drank tea, ate lunch... and its not tight all over like BH its just in a spot where i can feel a lump of baby

  • @BeachMommy2B I have definitely had that last pregnancy. This time she has just been river dancing on my cervix but I expect the uncomfortable positions and movements to come any day now. I have a very short torso so it gets a bit cramped pretty fast.

  • @BeachMommy2B: I'm glad you asked this, and I look forward to others' responses, b/c I had a long period last night where I just couldn't get him to stop pushing against this one area. It sounds like you tried all the right things! Hang in there.
@WombThereItIs: Me too, short! Feels like he's running out of room in there.
  • New Question: Anyone hiring a doula? I found myself reading up on exactly the services they provide, and searching for local doulas online, and wondered if anyone plans to hire one... or has done so in the past?
  • @laurapalmier I am sorry you are going through that! I had never had tooth pain until I was about 9 weeks with this little one. I ended up needing a root canal as well, but they wouldn't do it until I was in the second tri. We compromised and did it at 11.5 weeks, but I was in excruciating pain without Tylenol during the interim. I also felt guilty taking it, but there was no way I could function otherwise.
  • @SKZW the idea of a doula really interests me! I didn't use one last time, but would also love to hear from any mamas who have!
  • @Squirtgun prayers for your grandma!
  • I just posted a "review" of the Chicco Bravo for 2! I didn't want the pictures to clog up the random thread.

  • @lrwardrop @christinawild @OmegaRose3 @emilyalso @SKZW Thanks ladies. Since it's day 3 of these cold symptoms I thought I'd call the pediatric advice line just to make sure I'm not missing anything. Checked the back of his throat to rule out strep, no redness or white patches; no redness in his ears; no rash anywhere; still with a cough, little chest congestion and intermittent runny/stuffed nose depending on the crying fits... which leads me to my concern.. he wakes up after only 5-15 min of sleep and just cries! We are all SO tired. To sum up the call, we were told we are keeping him and the house too warm (long sleeve pajamas with sweatshirt and sweatpants over since he doesn't sleep with a blanket and 74 degrees). So, we'll try taking off the sweat-layer and turning down the heat. You all probably didn't need this kind of an update but this is my life right now (first kid sick for the first time).

  • @skzw I looked into a doula last pregnancy and I was sort of shocked how costly one was. I can't remember but I think the one I found wanted $3,000 or more for her services the day of delivery.

Are you using a midwife or a doctor? I found that most people think midwives are strange and don't allow you to use medication but that wasn't my experience at all. My midwife was in the room with me for hours while I was laboring and didnt leave the room for my over 3 hours of pushing. In the end I had such a great nurse and midwife, they provided such great support and all kinds of laboring/pushing techniques. I highly recommend looking into a midwife if your looking for more support.
  • All the midwife/doc/hospital/birth center/home conversations popping up around the board today make me want to hug my doc tomorrow. He came in before his clinic shifts, on his breaks, and after he was done for the day when I was on the deck and he sat there with his hand up my vag for the better part of 2 hours while I tried to push that kid out. I didn't realize how good I had it, he rules.

  • @RainyDays86 Glad to hear your procedure was uneventful and that you're at home resting... was thinking about you today.

@Squirtgun sorry to hear your Grandma had to have emergent surgery. I hope she's recovering well.

@squirtgun Sorry to hear about your grandma. I'll be thinking of you guys!
@mrsrep123 I"m with everyone else that you must be super mom to keep him from being sick this long!! How miserable for you both. I hope he starts to feel better (and sleep!) ASAP.
@laurapalmier I'm a FTM, but I've taken way more Tylenol than I EVER wanted to take with this pregnancy, and now am on a daily heartburn med so I don't OD on TUMS. FWIW, I did this essentially my entire pregnancy (at least 2 doses/week of Tylenol on average) and baby was perfectly fine on the A/S, no extra appendages or anything. Stress is worse for baby than tylenol, so take it and try to get some rest/relief!
  • @SKZW I looked into a doula. I'm foregoing one for the birth because I'm using a birth center with midwives. But I do plan to use a post partum doula. Look into your hospital. Where I work they have their own doulas who are cheaper.
  • Super excited for the weekend. Heading to Pittsburgh to see some close friends and their new house, and then watching the Steelers beat the Patriots on Sunday (hopefully!). Anyone else have fun weekend plans?

Oh, another random... for anyone that likes podcasts, check out https://www.themindpalacepodcast.com/. I listen to a lot of podcasts at work and I stumbled on this one yesterday. So far, I've listened to some about reducing waste, which has made me want to try composting and a few other things. I'm looking forward to checking out a few more today.

  • @SKZW I am not hiring a doula only for cost reasons. Me and my partner have joked about having spent our 'doula moola' on a new mattress and washer. In Montreal there is a program that provides doulas for free to low income, single or immigrant women.

I did buy a book called the Birth Partner: for Dads, Doulas and other Support People, and it is extremely thorough regarding every stage of labour, and the many many ways you might support the woman during them. Thought I'd mention it for the people who also feel they can't afford a doula but want to maximize the support they receive from labour partners.
  • Safe travels @kns1988! And Here We Go Steelers!! Don't forget to pack your black and gold :)
  • @ShadeofGreen816 yes! I did a bunch of reading because my main worry was if 4000mg acetaminophen was the max for my liver, what about the baby's tiny liver? But their liver is fully formed just not functioning yet, so it's all okay. I nearly reached the max and was taking 2 extra strength at once and it would barely reduce the pain for an hour so my ob got my dentist to call in an oxycodone script and when I got that and it set in I could feel how much tension I'd been holding all day which also can't be good for baby. It can just be a real struggle to weigh the pros and cons and it's just hard even when you know something is safe.

@livin541 tooth/mouth pain is the worst! I feel for us both!

@SKZW also! When I got the prescription for oxycodone I knew it was class c so I asked the pharmacist why it had that classification and he said it's because if you take it within a couple weeks of your labour the baby can be born with withdrawal, but to use narcotic painkillers in second trimester is safe. Maybe your class c prescription is in a similar boat.
  • yesterday all of these ad's started popping up in the middle of all these threads and it is annoying. Anyone else notice this?

@SKZW, I'm hiring a doula this time around. I didn't really know much about them during my first pregnancy, but I've met many people that have used them around where I live now and they all rave about them. I went to a "Meet the Doula" night two weeks ago and learned more about them and got to meet several potentials there.

There are several reasons why I like the idea of them. While DH was supportive the first time, we were both kind of deer in the headlights once labor actually began ....despite taking birthing classes. It's completely different once real things start happening! It would be nice to have another familiar face supporting me and helping reassure and reminding me of all the different positions and helping me to breath and all that. The doctor was literally only in the room with me for super brief checks and then when I was actively pushing,  so DH and I were mostly on our own for the majority of the labor time (12 hours). A nurse was in there but mine was just kind of "eh". Also, at my current OB's practice, they share on call with another clinic so there was like literally a potential of 1 out of 12 random doctors who could be there that day with me and I may not have even met them.

  • @lrwardrop - I think these boards must be buggy, because I get 'Congratulations You're a Winner' pop-ups on my phone all of the time when I'm on here. It's also the only site on my computer that gets pop-ups.
  • So, I feel like I've missed a ton...I keep logging on but don't see anything telling me there are new posts...stupid. And I see the ad's all the time, too...I've been so crabby the last couple of weeks this is just one more thing to annoy me!

just wanted to throw my two cents in haha

  • Just need somewhere to complain. I've been I'll the last few days with body aches, headache, nausea and vomiting. I've had dizzy spells and felt pretty run down, no appetite. Called my OB and she told me not to go to work. So I called out. I feel guilty. I'm miserable and not making money. We're only allowed to be sick 5 times and this is number three since baby. Oy.
  • @jayandaplus aww, I'm sorry! Don't feel guilty! I know what you mean though. Your sick time doesn't start over with the new year?

  • @nda_roxybabe No, it technically just eats away at my maternity leave. All for baby, right? Thanks for the support, I'm having a really rough week.
  • @jayandaplus sorry that you're feeling so under the weather! stay hydrated, take a nap and get someone to bring you a gatorade. really hope you feel better soon
  • @jayandaplus , I'm sorry...I know it sucks to eat away at your leave. Try to relax and I hope you feel better soon.

  • @jayandaplus: Feel better soon! Being under the weather stinks anyway, but while pregnant it seems so much worse. Try to think, it's just temporary! Hopefully you'll be over it soon. Wishing you lots of rest and liquids.
