All Things Postpartum!

Re: All Things Postpartum!

  • Wtf. Stretch marks on my right upper arm only to be discovered by me blowdrying my hair this morning (I know, this is a luxury).

Since when?! How?! Why?! UGH. Maybe this belonged in a bfest.

I know stretch marks don't disappear but any cream that works to help minimize the appearance?

I've heard raw Shea butter has some amazing results, but no personal experience here.

  • I keep having pains in my abdomen when I move around. It's kind of low in my belly.

Trying to decide if it's cramps or just my abs being sore from carrying and pushing out a baby. Or maybe my organs moving back into place?

Anyone else have midsection pain (kinda below the belly button) especially when you move around or press on your belly?

I had a vag delivery BTW.
  • I'll be honest,  I didn't go back and read this entire thread,  but I was curious about how you guys felt in the day or two after delivery.  I just gave birth to number 3, like 30 ish hours ago, so I know I'm not going to feel 100% yet, but I feel so sore... EVERYWHERE! Like I seriously feel like I was in a car accident or bar fight.. my muscles are so sore. My neck, my back, and even my face just feels sore, not to mention the nether regions.  Anyone else experience this? I don't remember feeling like this with either of the other kids.
  • @ShanRum3  I was feeling about the same way as you at 30 hours. I was still pretty swollen and my joints like my knees and hips were killing me. At about 48 hours P

@ShanRum3 I was feeling about the same as you at 30 hours. Very achy in my joints and VERY sore down under (I had a 2nd degree internal vaginal tear). I was told to only use ice packs for the first day so that beyond the first day rich oxygenated blood could go to that area to start healing. So I wouldn't over do it with ice packs. I was severely swollen after delivery, Tucks pads have been helpful for swelling and hemorrhoid discomfort. My advice is to def. Keep taking Motrin/Tylenol around the clock for the first 4 days at least. I'm 1 week pp now and still take 400mg twice a day just for perineal and hip aches. Once I got out of the hospital I felt better. Praying for a speedy recovery for you!!

    ETA: grammar and spelling
  • @ShanRum3 yup. Like @jkershaw2013 I was pretty swollen and recovery so far for this pregnancy has been a bit rough and this is #3. I don't know if it's because we are older or just how this experience of labor was. I'm a little over 2weeks PP now and I can feel my body still recovering and I have pains I don't recall having with my first two LOs.

  • @ShanRum3 I felt like a Mack truck hit me for sure. 26 hours of labor and a 4th degree tear. I couldn't even get out of bed and they had to cath me. I think the body just goes through so much and it's a shock. I'm 10 days PO and finally feeling better(ish).

Also don't skip any pain meds thinking you feel better. I made that mistake and I was miserable!

  • Thanks ladies.  I didn't take any pain meds at first, then I decided to take motrin,  and have been alternating Tylenol with it since yesterday.  Glad to hear I'm not the only one that feels like they've been hit by a car, and thankful I had no tearing this time!

I was going to say the exact same thing: I felt like I had been hit by a truck.  Everywhere hurt, everywhere.  Especially my neck and shoulders from straining to push so hard (I pushed for 4+hours).

@midwestbaby said it all: don't miss a dose of pain meds!!  I was alternating between ibuprofen and Tylenol around the clock until 2.5 weeks pp.  And definitely take the stool softeners.  A must.

Good luck mama!  I had a med-free, 21-hour labor and delivery and I thought the 72 hours pp were worse!  It gets better!
  • I felt that way after having my 2nd kid. Every muscle hurt so bad. Muscles I didn't even know existed! This baby the swelling was the worst part, but only lasted a few days. But with my 2nd I labored without an epi, and pushed for an hour. This baby I did not labor at all without an epi, but pushed for 2 hours, so swelling and my shoulders were sore.
  • Just hit 2 wks pp, missed the stool softener for 2 days- Holy hell!... How long are you guys taking meds? I've weaned motrin 1 or 2 a day. I feel like guilty for taking anything though. Not to mention it freaks me out when peanut gets tummy cramps from gas. I can't help but to think its from my diet/the meds.
  • @lblu43 My midwife told me to take the stool softener until I am completely healed (so 6-8 weeks). But DD as she described "blew my bottom out" during delivery.

I have been wanting to wean off my other meds as well, especially since oxycodone causes constipation. I am no longer taking Tylenol because I don't think it does anything. I will be taking ibuprofen until the swelling really goes down though.

Im only at 10 days PP though.

  • Hmm, how do I explain a 3 lb decrease in scale from early morning to now? All I did in between was take a nap.

    I didn't even sweat! Weird.
  • I feel like I am sweating off the lbs as well. I only have 13 lbs to go to be back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I think a majority of my weight gain was fluid. I also heard breastfeeding can help some women lose weight faster too. @AliKay20

  • @AliKay20 I am almost 3 weeks pp and am already down 16 lbs below my pre pregnancy weight :#  It actually made me really nervous to lose the weight so quickly since I have hypothyroidism that my doctor warned could turn to hyper after birth (and then back to hypo) and I had gd so I worry about diabetes, but I was fluffy before getting pregnant, so I can afford the weight loss plus some. And my endo wasn't concerned since I have no other bad symptoms. But talk about scary to step on the scale one morning, and step on it again later that afternoon and be 4 lbs lighter! LO is definitely sucking the fat into his own little roll-y body  :D

  • Unless I burnt off fat during my nap, I can't explain the 3 lb loss from morning and now. Ha!

Also, I dropped 20 lbs in the first two weeks PP but ever since then, I am at a standstill. Except of course, today when the number moved 3 lbs down. Weird!

I am not in a hurry to lose all the PP weight but I would love to learn how others have done it in the past. This may call for PP Fitness thread :)

@AliKay20 I'm in a similar boat. I dropped 35 pounds the first 2.5 weeks and this last .5 of a week, I've stalled out. I'm ready to lose the last 15+.

I stopped taking the Tylenol 3 at 2 weeks post c-section (yesterday) and think I need to add them back. My incision area actually hurts a little today, but most painful is this sciatic nerve pain. Aleve doesn't touch it. I started doing some stretches to help last night, but good lord, am I hobbling like an old lady. My back, hips, tailbone hurt the entire pregnancy, and seeing how baby boy was a whopping 10 lbs 4 oz at birth (and I'm 5'5" and normally a size 6), the pregnancy aches make sense, but goodness, when will my body stop hurting??? I'm down half the pregnancy weight I put on (nearly 50 lbs total), so less weight should be easier on my frame by the day...

Also, maybe this is some postpartum emotions talking, but husband went back to work what was supposed to be half days for two weeks yesterday, and it's really pissing me off that he's working more like 2/3 days. Yesterday he left 2 hours later than he was supossed to. I get that as a man its not expected he take off as long, but as I watch work emails come in and see that I am missing out on cool professional things while on maternity leave as I hobble around my house and need to go to the doctors office to give a urine sample because I have UTI symptoms, I am just pissed. It's 1:15 and he's supposed to be home now, and he hasn't left, and I am resisting the urge to bite his head off when he walks in the door. Ugh.
  • I woke up this morning around 7 am to a definite uptick in bleeding--like a soaked pad kind of bleeding. I'm on pad #3 since then and have passed 4 dime-sized clots. About 2.5 weeks post c-section. I called my doctor and she said to monitor this morning and we'd touch base midday. I had a lot of bleeding immediately after the c-section, and they had to give me a couple things to stop the bleeding. I've got to say, googling causes is not helping my concern. While I rest and wait and see, has anyone else experienced this?
  • @kwilliams3402 Try and stay away from Google, it never helps! I don't have experience with this but FX it's nothing and everything's ok.

True story in Google!! Bleeding is lightening up... Fingers crossed the trend continues. Scary for sure!!
  • I forgot to ask at my appointment this week if it was ok to take a bath. Are any of you ladies taking baths after a vaginal delivery? I am 11 days PP and think a bath would do wonders for me, but not sure if it's safe. I suppose I could call the on-call nurse for the weekend, but was wondering what the verdict was for the group here.

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to wait until your 6 week follow up, but I could be remembering that wrong. I believe there's concerns about infection since everything is still pretty open up there.

  • @midwestbaby I was told to take baths to help heal and relieve any discomfort from stitches. My hospital encourages taking a bath after the first day. It was the same this time with no tear and just a couple of stitches for cosmetics and last time when I had a bad tear and a bunch of stitches. I took one at the hospital yesterday before being released. I'll probably take one again tonight since my stitches are kind of bothering me.
  • Hmm that's what I wonder, some docs say go ahead with a bath and some don't. Guess I should make the phone call.

  • @midwestbaby definitely check with your doctor. I had an episiotomy and was told to avoid anything other than a warm water sitz bath (no soap or oils, etc). All that scented stuff plus bacteria from dirty bath water may do you more harm than good with you recovery. I've taken to long, hot showers with deep conditioners and good lotion to follow - afterward I always joke "I'm restored!" to DH.
  • I am 3 days PP and took a mini bath yesterday.  I put a small amount of water in the bottom of the tub just to soak my bottom.  It definitely helped with the hemorrhoids and I also have a tear that's pretty uncomfortable. The doctors and nurses said a bath was fine but I was afraid to fill the tub up.

My OB said no baths. Plan to ask again at 6week PP appt come Sept.

  • I was told baths are ok, as long as I don't use anything scented. I did not have stitches, so don't know if that makes a difference
  • Mine said no bath, i think bc of the stitches.  A long hot bath sounds amazing though and is on my list to do first thing after my pp checkup!
  • Mine said I could take a bath but only warm water, no soaps or anything. Soap/bubble bath stuff changes the water tension and allows water to enter the vagina more readily. I would however check with your doctor to see what they recommend @midwestbaby. I've never been a huge bath person but I'm considering a short one to help with hemorrhoids.
  • @LWC1112 I would also love a PP fitness thread.  DH and I own a gym and its going to be really hard for me to not to be moving like I used to. I'd like to start doing small things at home and would be curious on what others are doing.  My 5 year old starts kindergarten tomorrow and we live only half a mile from school.  Plan to start walking her to and from ASAP to get started.
  • TMI warning

So I'm extremely constipated :( thank you oxycodone. Boo. I am having the worst cramps, but can only poop out little tiny pebbled/nuggets. And it feels like there is so much more in there. It takes a lot of effort just to get like one out. I'm so frustrated and feel awful. I know a lot of it has to do with the pain meds I was on, but also how swollen I am from a 4th degree tear down there. I have tried milk of magnesia, a little miralax yesterday, am taking 400 mg of stool softener and drinking tons of water. Any advice?

    Signed,
An extremely miserable mom who just wants to poop.

I caved because I'm in so much pain and went with a dulcolax suppository. Those things freaking work! It felt like a second birth, but thank god for whoever invented those! I was about to have DH drive me to the ER.
