I know that this may be a better question for a doctor, but have any of you experience pain on the side of your breast/ armpit? It's pretty painful especially to the touch and I'm not sure if it could be mastitis or if that's normal? Other than that I haven't had any other problems. It's my left breast and it tends to leak more than the other one as well.

Can you feel a knot where the pain is? If so, it's a clogged duct. Massage the hell out of it when your LO is nursing. It hurts like hell but will clear up in a few days and it's way less painful than mastitis from what I heard.

So, I have a question for those of you with older kids. What do you say to them about your new LO nursing? I have been telling my older daughter that Ruth gets her milk from the boob. But, now that she's saying "boob" every time I nurse, I've realized that maybe that's not the most appropriate word to be using?

I say boob too. But my 3.5 year old said boob before the baby came anyway.

I just tell DS that the baby is eating and leave it at that. DS says "baby eat" every time I nurse.

Once in a while something else comes out with SS in earshot, but I usually say breast/s... We also did a quick briefing with him before Baby's first bath to avoid surprise and/or confusion. He's 8, though, so I think it's fine for him to know and use proper terminology.
Question about nighttime BFing: Jacob tends to wake up every hour and a half to two and a half hours to munch at slightly older than three weeks. He tends to suckle for five to ten minutes and then start to fall asleep. On one hand it's awesome that I'm only up for 30-40 minutes. But on the other... Should I try and keep him awake for another 5 to 10 minutes so that he gets a decent meal (and maybe sleep a little longer)? Or just embrace the suck?

You could try changing him after the first side and then nursing him on the other side to see if it fills up his belly more and gets him to sleep longer. That worked with my daughter when she was little.

Yeah, I push Grayson to take a full feeding, so he sleeps for 4 to 5 hrs instead of 2.5 or 3 if he just snacks.

I had the same problem and just started going his last night. It was the first time he went 3 hours between feeding at night instead of 1.5-2 hours, so I will call it a win.
Question about fenugreek --- if you start taking it and then stop (because of digestive issues or maple syrup smell or other reason) does your supply go back to what it was before? Is it less? The same as while you were taking fenugreek? I'm sure it could vary person, just looking for first hand stories.

I was drinking fenugreek tea and it definitely increased my supply. But when I stopped, my supply remained the same. But that could also be because my LO is an obsessive eater lol
is it harmful to give a little water to a breastfed baby? I don't plan on it but my mom was watching my son for a little bit and I gave her a bottle of my milk just in case the baby got hungry and she said she would give him an oz or two of water if he needed more but I vaguely remember reading something about it being bad for them. or was it giving them TOO MUCH water that was bad?

Yes giving them water is bad. Breast milk is high in water they don't need any more. Water fills their stomachs way too much so they don't get hunger cues and then won't eat. Tell her no water until the baby is closer to 1 year old.
Has anyone else's LOs randomly forget how to latch? Elianna is 2 weeks old today and today she has been struggling to latch. I have her two pumped bottles because it was getting frustrating for both of us, but now the latch problem seems worse. She's been great breastfeeding so I don't know what the problem could be. The only position she seems to latch on is the football hold but she keeps pushing my breast away with her hands

I would try swaddling her before nursing. My LO gets so frantic that she would push my breasts away in an effort to eat more quickly, but swaddling helps.

My LO does that when she's tired. I've tried swaddling and it helps some but she hates having her arms in the swaddle so she continues to push my boob/hand away.
My lo did that around 2 weeks too. For her it was a phase that lasted just a few days then went back to normal. I actually was at the pedi for her two week checkup and brought it up. Pedi asked me if I wouldn't mind nursing and showing what's she's doing. She latched right away like normal again. Haha of course. @doodleoodle

Are you engorged? I found that right around that time my production really ramped up and the baby had a lot more trouble latching when the breasts were really full. If that's your case too, try either hand expressing or pumping for 30 second before trying to latch.

I definitely could be. She's been sleeping for longer stretches so when she wakes up I'm pretty full. I was told I should pump during those long naps but I'm so tired I end up sleeping as well. Thank you for the advice!!

You should Also look at "natural breastfeeding" ( I'm not a fan of that term, but that's what they call it...) they call pushing the breast away like that booby boxing, And talk about pressure points on baby's chest and legs. They suggest that babies push the breast away when the pressure points aren't activated by the baby being flat against you, and how the "natural breastfeeding" position allows your baby to help you nurse instead of you doing all the work

I just tried this and it was a success!! Thank you for the tip she latched right away and stayed on!
Is it normal to not be engorged or feel very full or heavy? Little guy has been fussy past couple of days where as normally he is really chill. Could I not have enough milk or just my body trying to keep up with him? He's been cluster feeding off and on lately. He has a great amount of dirty diapers and two days ago at doctor he had gained back up to his birth weight. But it's since the appointment that I've felt less full..

After a while your body regulates and you won't feel as full unless you go longer than normal without feeding the baby. If he's gaining and has wet/dirty diapers then don't worry. It means your body is getting used to things.

I just tried this... It was so awkward feeling! I'll be trying it again though; the idea behind it makes sense to me.

I've noticed that the past four or five days I've felt less full and my breasts are softer (I'm 16 days PP), and I was a bit worried, but she is definitely getting enough milk. She pees and poops a ton, and I pumped yesterday for about 10 minutes and got 6 ounces, and that was less than an hour after feeding her. She's been cluster feeding at night as well, from about 8pm-11pm, and then sleeping for a decent stretch. From what I understand, it's just your breasts regulating your supply.
Uugh, this little guy keeps throwing his hands in his mouth and it takes a lot of coercion to get him to open his mouth wide. Any tips?
For the hands try swaddling them so they can't get them up there. For the wide mouth here are some tips and diagrams. Sometimes you have to unlatch them a few times to get it right. https://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content.php?pagename=doc-WL
How do I get my baby to exclusively nurse again after using a bottle? I had to supplement formula bc I wasn't making enough for him, now bc I am not nursing, but pumping my milk is decreasing again. Please help.
Does anyone have good advice on when to get sized for nursing bras after birth? I currently just have the stretchy sports bra/sleeping bra type which is only sized S/M/L. I'd really like to get some more fitted and supported cupped bras (I'd love to go back to underwire that I'm used to but heard that could hurt production) so my boobs look less saggy when I'm out and about, but obviously don't want to buy something that won't fit in a month. Right now I'm 12 days post partum and breastfeeding is going well. I plan to EBF for at least 5 months of my leave, preferably for a year.

I've heard your breast size regulates at about 8 weeks PP. I believe underwire can cause issues with clogged ducts. You can also buy a regular bra and use the tutorial that was posted earlier this week to convert your bra to a nursing bra.

If you can meet with a lactation consultant or LLL leader I bet they can give you some real good advice on it. The only thing I can think of is to maybe pick up a nipple shield - it may feel more like a bottle to your LO and be a good way to transition back to your bare breast.

Anyone else have an overactive let down that makes their lo choke? I feel so bad every time it happens. I googled some stuff just wanted to know if anything has worked for you

You can try pumping through the let down then letting lo nurse, or leaning back during let down.
