I know they can be cluster feeding now, but is HOURS on the breast without really taking a break (minus mandatory diaper changes) normal?! I swear this kid has been on me from 9:30 this morning until now. With maybe an hour or two where I changed him and took a shower. I can't imagine him eating this whole time but whenever I try to take him off to burp him or put him down he starts rooting it looking for it and crying until he's latched back on and eating.

This has been my day! I'm getting frustrated. I slept very little last night becaus DS has been cluster feeding since 4am. I got a 45 minute break and I took a shower and I got 15 minutes so I ate lunch.

DH Is home and has done nothing all day except play video games and he has been napping for the last hour and a half. When I woke up this morning he wanted to know why I didn't wake him up to help with the baby. I get more frustrated waking him up in the middle of the night because I have to spend 5 minutes waking him up, it's easier for me to just get the baby myself.

LO keeps falling asleep on my boob, but when I try to move him he immediately wakes up and starts rooting. So tired and frustrated!
I've had a few days like this too. I sit pinned under LO with a boob out. I keep thinking he's gotta fall asleep soon - I'm exhausted and I'm an adult! He's just a little guy but he's going strong. At least he's growing...

  • I'm having the same issues with nipple shields. I have an appointment with a LC on Tuesday, but the General way to wean them from it is to just keep offering your nipple from time to time?

I knew BFing was going to be hard but I wasn't expecting the soul crushing difficulty honestly.

Couldn't have said it better! Between bleeding nipples and having to result to EP I'm so sad. :( just when I started to try and get her back on the breast now my right breast hurts so bad just to touch it. No lumps just so sore on the right side under the armpit area. I am trying to resolve this now. I cried alot day today for every little thing. Mostly because this breast feeding thing has me torn up!!!! Then to top it off I came to pump while I was boiling some chicken. Normally I would've waited but my breast is in so much pain and I thought it'd help...it didn't. AND of course the freaking chicken catches fire in the kitchen. Ugh. At that point I broke down and did the Oprah cry! I feel like I want to give up BF but I wont! My boobs may have won this battle but they will NOT win the war!!!!
I was having a lot of pain underneath my armpits as well. I tried nursing with my LO in the traditional cradle hold (we'd been doing the football hold) and I could literally feel all of the milk being let down from underneath my arms. It was such a weird feeling. Anyways, the pain is gone now. I know you said you were EP but it might be worth it to try to get your LO to nurse from the breast to stimulate milk ducts that your pump isn't for whatever reason.
Thanks for the advice but unfortunately it didn't work. :( I tried twice after a hot shower and massage. Once in football once in cradle hold. I was praying the entire time. But omg the entire time I felt like she was ripping my nipple right off!! I was sure as soon as I unlatched her my nipple was going to be hanging from her mouth. Lol.

My breast is feeling slightly better but I think that's only due to the fact I have in and took motrin. :( idk how much longer I can do this ladies!

Anyone's back start hurting really bad when they feed/pump? The middle of my back starts aching really bad when I pump or breastfeed. I know with my breasts being bigger and heavier now a backache is a given but it doesn't hurt unless I'm doing this

Pay attention to how you're sitting. You're probably hunching over. Try to relax as much as possible and recline back some.
If I recline back he breaks his latches. I have to sit erect or he pulls off.
  • I pumped for the first time today after Rhys ate from one breast and then fell asleep. DH was going to try the bottle tonight since LO cluster feeds so much in the evening. Well, I put the bottle in fridge still attached to the horn to go tend to LO. Not 5 mins later my 4 year old went to get some yogurt and dumped the whole thing. Good bye liquid gold... At least it forced me to clean my fridge.

Same thing happened to me. My 7 yo comes running to the room saying the milk is spilling!!! I ran to the kitchen (i thought it was the gallon of milk lol) and my breast milk 5 ounces!!!! All over the floor. My heart broke but to make it worst...the flange broke! My 5 yo was just like I just wanted to see it ugh. Needless to say, DH is at target now looking for flanges. Lol. Babies R Us didn't have them...what!!

I spilt milk today :( I had poured the milk collected in my milkies milk saver into a bottle and then dropped it on the floor.

I'm dealing with the same thing. My kiddo will eat, pop off, I'll burp her, and before I can put her down she's wide awake and rooting frantically again. This went on for 4 hours last night, only breaks were for diapers. I think we're on hour 5 tonight. Yesterday I broke down and called the ped, who said she was most likely full and just comfort nursing. Unfortunately she's smart enough to not be tricked by a pacifier, so iis just nurse/soothe all night The best I can do is keep her on one side only; since her tummy is full she'd just spit it back up. If it's been a good 2 hours, or the lack of milk makes kiddo upset, I'll switch sides.

Anyone else producing way too much milk? I've been feeding baby on demand and pumping every 2-3 hours yet I'm still beyond engorged. The milk in the fridge is sitting so long I'm afraid it will expire and I've been freezing most of it. Ugh I need help...

Im the opposite..I'm producing quite a bit of milk but it doesn't seem like it's enough. The first day or so they were way too full and now they don't ever get full enough!

Are you pumping to empty your breast or just get relief from engorgement? If you are pumping to empty the breast stop, that is just telling your body to produce more milk. If you are so engorged you are uncomfortable only pump until you have relief.

I only pump because I get engorged and only pump for 10 minutes. I'm still semi engorged after pumping.

  • My horrible experience first :

Had my sweet baby girl in the 22nd after 25 hours of labor and an emergency c section. While in recovery, the nurse said that she wouldn't be able to latch, after one try. She said that I'd have to exclusively pump. I was so upset that I just cried. So the whole first day Noone was there to help me. I pumped that day and the next day until about 2 o'clock when someone knocked on my door, it was the lactation consultant. She said can I help you with anything? I did YES PLEASE. long story short, baby is tongue tied. She latched in the hospital with a nipple shield. Then when we got home she didn't want the shield so I tried without it, and she latched first time! I was so happy.

    Now my question:
My right side is really hard and I'm barely getting anything when I pump. My left side is doing awesome now and I can get about 60cc. Should I be worried? I know she's only 4 days old and a friend said that could be my milk coming in. Not sure what to do.

I breast fed the first 2 days and then had to begin pumping while my nipples healed because they were horrible due to latch issues. I'm still pumping because I'm scared to go back and only latch her sometimes but it's so painful. Anyways, my first maybe 5 days of pumping I was getting so little I was worried too but as long as you're making enough to satisfy your baby and she's pooping and peeing the reccomend amount Then I don't think you have anything to worry about. Now my baby is just over 2 weeks and sometimes I pump and get 2 ounces sometimes I get 5! And it's always different for each breast. Good luck!

So, now there's a hard lump and I've been having the worst fever, chills, nausea, headache, and fainting feeling in the world since yesterday!! Ugh. It's rough. Called my OB and she gave me a prescription for antibiotics thank god. Hopefully this knot in my breast will go away soon. Idk what else to do. I've been having her suck, then pumping, heating packs then massage then pump, hot showers. I'm at my wits end. I even looked for some white dot on my nipple to see if it was a clogged pore.. nothing. And I'm pumping and feeding on my hands and knees apparently gravity helps...not working. Nothings working. I want to cry all the time.

Give it some time. My boobs were uneven the first week. Eventually the other one caught up!

Do not feel ashamed or defeated if you have to use a nipple shield. Do whatever it takes to have your child breastfeed. The only reason a pediatrician or an LC might frown upon it, is because they believe a baby might not get enough to eat. My son ate well and gained weight steadily. I used a nipple shield for 4 months until my son weaned off it, on his own!!! He grabbed it, pulled it off, and opened his little mouth, letting me know he was ready to latch without it. It was amazing. I was sore for a few days but he eventually got the hang of it. Also Lansinoh's lanolin nipple cream is your best friend.
  • Side laying position this young (1 week and 2 days). Yes or no? I've read mixed reviews about it when I looked into it more today, but the last 2 nights this seems to be the only way to get DS to sleep at night. Have any of you ladies been using this that can ease my mind?
  • I know pumping isn't any indication of supply issues but I'm feeling so defeated. I'm pumping so I can have bottles on hand for night time feedings and I'm just getting nothing. I'm lucky if I get an ounce total.

I just don't know what to do. I'm trying not to give up because I so desperately want to be able to breast feed and pump exclusively but it's so frustrating.

Any tips mamas? I'm gonna try to drink way more water and make some lactation cookies but I don't know what else to do.

No tips for you, just wanted to let you know you're not alone. Mine is breastfeeding fine but I want to start pumping now for when I go back to work and I seriously get next to nothing!! I did a happy dance last week when I collectively pumped 1 freaking ounce, and have not been able to replicate that since, it's depressing. Unless I can figure this out we'll have to switch to formula for some feedings. I've done everything I can think of, next step is to get some smaller flange sizes because I feel like mine don't fit right.
Try changing the intensity of the pump. For me if I turned it up too high I pumped less then when the intensity was lower.
Try hand expressing also. I hand expressed for a few days, then the pump worked much better. Some PP mentioned holding your LO when pumping, l found just flipping thru pictures of DD helped too.
When I first started pumping for DS when he was about a month old I got very little. I stuck with pumping once most nights after DS went to bed and by the time I went back to work I was pumping enough at work for his day at day care. Don't panic yet if pumping is not going well, I think it can take a bit for your body to get used to the pump sometimes.
Hand expressing was the best advice, thank you! Up until now I haven't really tried to express much because it's always so messy and just drips all over me. However, we're staying overnight at my brother's for thanksgiving and I didn't bring my pump, but then baby slept way longer than she usually does (does the stuff that makes us feel sleepy in turkey transfer through breast milk--I'm only half kidding, I can't believe she slept this long!) and I woke up feeling totally engorged. Hand expressed into an empty bottle I had and collected way more than I usually do with a pump. I also ordered smaller flanges from amazon, hopefully those improve the pumping sessions...

It was my favorite position with my daughter at that age. I had a CS and it allowed me to fully relax. Go for it! It also helped mine sleep.
  • Anyone's LO have moments where they just REFUSE to latch? Well I mean...last night Cooper latched but his suck was just SO weak and he did this at every feeding in the middle of the night. I would try to get him to e-latch again and again with no change. :(

Is this just something that will happen from time to time?

Mine did it last night too (although he would also then pull himself off and fuss). I think he was more interested in comfort nursing than actually wanting any food. He just wanted mommy.

Comfort sucking. Tristan just went through 5 days of cluster feeding and now he's wanting to sleep all day (growth spurt!) but my boobs have a huge oversupply after all that cluster feeding and comfort sucking isn't really working for him.

  • I want to say sorry in advance if this is a repeat question!!! So my baby boy is a week old today and we pretty much got the hang of breast feeding by the first night as he was born in the morning. This made me very happy as I was getting fusterated. But of course it was new to both of us as I'm a ftm. ANYWAY so my right nipple is perfect he eats from it no problems we have mastered the one side. Not so much on the left. It's constantly getting engorged and every time I try to feed from that side it's just a whole mess in the making. The nipple squirts out like a fountain in multiple sides of the nipple and as its doing that big droplets are coming out. Every time I try to feed baby on that side he's constantly gulping getting way to much food and if I try to pull it out so he can take a breather and not have to constantly keep swallowing we both end up soaked I mean the milk just doesn't stop it squirts everywhere. I've tried laying on a angle like I've read so it won't stream down but nothing is working it leaks out on us, his breathing gets bad , he gets red and fusterated and on top of that he gets way to much food and ends up choking/ spitting it up leaving me a mess at night watching him

That's called overactive letdown. If laying back doesn't work, you can try pumping through the letdown and then latching him once the letdown had happened. This website has a lot of helpful tips: https://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/

    My milk just
Came in yesterday my baby has just started eating off the breast with the assistance of a sheild so I've been pumping but is it normal to feel engorged and kinda tender even after feeding and pumping?

Also I fed her for almost 55 min this evening and she still was hungry and cried to eat more how do I know how much she's getting? I feel like an hour is a long time to feed and have her not be satisfied..

Sometimes you can be so full, it takes days to recover, it should get better.

As for feeding, my DD eats for hours sometimes, this from what I read is due to growth spurts. As long as she's having adequate wer/poopy diapers, no need to worry, just find a way to relax through the cluster feeds.

    Stay strong momma!

So the full feeling is just from so much milk coming in at once?? Thank you! Breastfeeding is way more stressful and all out consuming than I expected lol
  • I had high hopes for BF LO but appears I have flat nipples so nurse recommend a nipple shield. Ever since I've been using it he has gas pains after feeding even with a good burping. Anyone else? I'm running into so many issues from the start I'm very stressed and feeding is becoming unenjoyable. I'm highly considering throwing in the towel after only 2 days!

Yes. And as far as "getting enough" like PP said look for wet/poopy diapers but also, just bc LO is on there for an hour doesn't mean they are eating. Look for "jaw action" and when they slow down massage your breast to help push out a little more milk and re-stimulate active eating.

I get that sensation anytime my milk lets down. It took me forever with my first to realize what it was. It got less noticeable the older DD got.
  • Anyone with really large breasts have any luck feeding in a traditional hold across your chest? I'm looking for tips...

I have DDD cups and I've only ever been able to get my 5 week old son latched with a football hold....its a lot harder to do when I'm out or at families house without my pillows etc. Love to know if anyone in my situation has had success with either Bfing holds.

Every time I try to feed baby on that side he's constantly gulping getting way to much food and if I try to pull it out so he can take a breather and not have to constantly keep swallowing we both end up soaked I mean the milk just doesn't stop it squirts everywhere. I've tried laying on a angle like I've read so it won't stream down but nothing is working it leaks out on us, his breathing gets bad , he gets red and fusterated and on top of that he gets way to much food and ends up choking/ spitting it up leaving me a mess at night watching him
I dealt with something similar.  My milk came in when kiddo was 2 days old, and I had oversupply and a bit of overactive letdown, and it was all too much for her itty bitty tummy to handle.  We had spit up on literally every linnen in the hospital room by the end of the night, it was a mess.

My LC suggested hand expressing to get the heaviest flow out first, which will also soften the nipple so its easier to latch on to.  Also pull LO off for a burp and relatch if you hear air being gulped down, or some coughing/choking noises like they can't handle the fast flow, just keep a small towel nearby to catch leaks.  If you're okay with it (and talk to an LC to be sure BC I used mine for different reasons), a nipple shield will slow your LO down, and you may only need to use it (or any of these tactics) for just a short while, until your supply and LO's demand balance out.
  • I'm really struggling with breastfeeding. This is harder and more painful than giving birth!
I can nurse fine from my right breast, but my left nipple has a tear almost half way through and when she latches on it makes me want to scream. I've been trying to nurse with the right and pump the left. I've used lanolin, coconut oil and expressed breast milk. Lansinoh soothie gel pads. It's still killing me! I have an appointment with the lactation consultant on Monday. Anyone have any advice until then? I have a nipple shield but it hurts when baby sucks through it too, but I think I'm using it wrong.....aaaaaaa. I has no idea it'd be this hard. Mad respect to anyone who has breastfed in the past! Lol

Yes. And as far as "getting enough" like PP said look for wet/poopy diapers but also, just bc LO is on there for an hour doesn't mean they are eating. Look for "jaw action" and when they slow down massage your breast to help push out a little more milk and re-stimulate active eating.
Also switch breasts. I typically feed 15min on one side, do a diaper change, then switch sides. This gives them enough time to eat until they are full and helps keep mom sane in the middle of the night so we are not constantly comfort sucking.

I'm having a lot of trouble too. I actually have a huge chunk missing from my left nipple. It really helps me if I look at my baby while she is nursing and tell her how much I love her until I get used to the pain. It's even more impactful of you can make eye contact. As for helping to eliminate the pain itself, I have no advice. I'm 4 weeks in and still in a lot of pain. I was using a nipple shield too and it helped for like a day but then it started hurting again and I felt like my baby was getting less milk as she was wanting to eat more frequently and that further irritated my nipples.

Anyone with really large breasts have any luck feeding in a traditional hold across your chest? I'm looking for tips...

I have DDD cups and I've only ever been able to get my 5 week old son latched with a football hold....its a lot harder to do when I'm out or at families house without my pillows etc. Love to know if anyone in my situation has had success with either Bfing holds.

I've been using my boppy at home and laying him on that because I can pull him out a little if he's too close to my boob. I also try to recline a little bit. As for in public, we're still working on that. I more or less have him sit on my lap I guess. I'm hoping I'll be able to bottle feed in public as much as possible once we start giving him a bottle (2 more weeks since he's only 2 weeks old now)
