So serious frustration and concern here. We have spent the last week and a half with purple crying or colic...screaming for hours. The past few days she's now developed issues latching leading into more crazy fits.
So: yesterday night I went to work and DH fed her from the stash via avent natural . No prob: came home last night latched no issues. This morning I got 2 feeds in and then come 11 she lost her ever loving mind after eating for 20 minutes and refusing to latch again, ended with a bottle. I think maybe she was frustrated with the slow letdown? Again tonight at 7:30 o clock (she just calmed and fell asleep now) Felicity again went bat shit crazy and after 10-15 minutes of eating refused to latch. Ended up needing to use more freezer stash via bottle . So at this point I'm starting to get really really nervous and am totally lost on the sometimes a-ok when latching and other times having a two hour fit over latching. I know for sure it's out of frustration but it all just ends with me trying for awhike to get her to latch as I want to avoid the bottle (Im now afraid there's some sort of nipple confusion) and breaking down in a fit of tears and ending up giving her a bottle anyway. I haven't pumped because as I said she usually gets a good 20 minute feeding before hand from me. Anyone else having this weird back and forth. Uber anxious for next feeding to see if she latches....
Edit: I guess the real question is is there selective or sometimes nipple confusion?
Do LOs root to comfort nurse too? Every single time something has woken spawn up, no matter how short of a time frame that he's been out, he starts frantically rooting again.
I. Hate. Growth spurts. That's what this is, right? He's 4 weeks.
Our DD roots for 3/4 of the day I feel like- definitely for comfort I just gave up my will to the gods and let her. As for the growth spurt, could be? Felicity clustered week four into five which is a wonder week. Honestly I just assume everyday is a GD growth spurt as thats my reasoning for her flipping or eating non stop all the time.
@Lolo427 I'm convinced the "wonder" part of a wonder week is us wondering if we're going to survive the week.
So shot in the dark here on the bottle issue - if she's really pissed off about the flow rate with bottle nipple vs breast nipple I think advent makes a premie bottle nipple. My brain says that that (I hate using the same word twice in a without a comma GAH) nipple would have an even slower flow rate than the size 1s.

Zeke does the same thing. I'll finally get him to sleep. Then I put him in the bouncer or something because I have to pee and sure enough, he's awake and rooting when I get back. Drives me nuts. It's also part of why I'm so hesitant to put him down when he's asleep because I know he will wake up shortly and then I'll be stuck nursing for at least another 30 minutes.

My LC said that there's no scientific basis that proves nipple confusion is actually a thing. My LO did the same thing yours is doing around week 4. She's in week 6 now and stopped. I never gave her a bottle, just walked her when she'd get frustrated and try again to get her to latch when she calmed down. Sometimes I think she was just tired or gassy. Try not to get too worked up over it, I promise it will pass!
Milk blister anyone? I'm not even 100% sure that's what it is. The best way I can describe it is a pimple on my aerola. The internet tells me it's trapped milk in the pore, but all I know is it hurts like a bitch. I've tried what dr Google says (hot wash cloth before pumping/nursing) but no give. Any solutions ladies?
Sorry if it's TMI, but what can you take for vomiting and diarrhea while breastfeeding. I've read to avoid Pepto. I plan to call the doctor in the morning.
@Lolo427 I have a two month old and he sometimes does the whole "I can't latch and I'm going to freak out thing". I don't really pump and he's only had 3 bottles so I think he just has moments. I usually do what @Ceridwen77 said and try to distract him for a few with walking or sitting him up for a few minutes. Sometimes I put him across my legs on his stomach to put pressure on his stomach. He usually calms down and latches after that.
So up until 2 days ago LO was bottle fed pumped breastmilk since he had an issue latching, well now he latches but I've noticed that his hunger cues seem to be off...this morning he woke up cranky like he wanted to eat so we changed a diaper and I put him on the boob, he latched just fine but was done after like 5 min and was content to just chill in his cosleeper...it had been almost 2 hrs since his last feeding...it's been another hour and he isn't acting hungry at all...has this happened to anyone else?

I have a very fast flow, so my LO is done quickly too. She is having plenty of wet and dirty diapers, so I just follow her lead!

Yes this happens to us as well. Agreed with the above poster, as long as you're getting enough wet/poop diapers you're good!
You can try a diaper change after he's done and then offer the other side.
So my LO is 6 days old now and we've been breastfeeding since day one. My milk came in Thursday night but since Wednesday night, we've been cluster feeding every night for 12 hours or more. Literally just rotating breasts every 30 minutes and burping until he exhausts himself and we can sleep. I've seen my LC to make sure I am producing enough to feed him and I am. She did suggest pumping after he feeds from right and left to get an extra ounce or two to top him off at the end of each breast feeding, which I did but it didn't make a difference. I would top him off with that ounce or two and he would fall asleep and then is lay him down and he would wake right back up, rinse and repeat. So I just stopped pumping because it seems pointless if he is just going to stay attached to me no matter what.
I've read through everyone's posts and I've seen similar instances. How was this worked out for you ladies that have already went through it? Do I just wait this out? Part of me is still afraid I'm not producing enough to feed him.

You're in one of his first big growth spurts... You just gotta tough it out momma! Sorry and good luck!
@emzcat definitely cluster feeding. Usually this will happen around 3 weeks as well. Wait it out girl. Cluster feeding is so exhausting, but as long as your LO still has wet diapers then you're fine. Just try not to plan anything important you need to do while the LO is doing it
I would highly recommend getting a baby scale to ease your concerns. My baby lost significant weight the first week and I became paranoid about my milk production between pediatrician appointments (they scheduled me back every 3 days for weights). I bought a salter electric scale for $60.00 it weighs down to the half ounce. I could weigh my lo before and after feeds. The amount of stress reduction that offered was priceless. I still use it occasionally when we have periods of changing feeding patterns and weekly just out of curiosity.
Okay when do your nipples become tougher!? Mine feel like they're sunburnt while getting them clamped in a vice when LO latches. LC says he's latching appropriately and my hold Is good but oh goodness it is quite painful

How old is your lo? We are 3 weeks and although I'm still sore, especially after cluster feeding, it is quite a bit less.
Does anyone have any experience block feeding due to fast flow that I think is caused by over production?
I had to block fed with my daughter for a while. I have a fast flow no matter what. I don't think it's from over production. But she was a frequent nurser who didn't eat for long each time and if I switched sides every time she got too much fore milk and was very spitty and gassy. So I fed her from the same side 2 feeds in a row and it helped.

He will be 5wks this Friday. He hasn't been cluster feeding all that much. It's usually every two hours that he eats. I use nipple cream and it helps a little.

I have had to block feed for a few days on a few different occations because of oversupply but I also have a forceful flow/let down even wo oversupply that gags lo. If you dont have oversupply i would express for 30sec before feeds and then lean back when feeding so that baby can better control his/her intake. Thats worked for us.

Misery loves company. Sorry it's still uncomfortable for you, but it makes me feel a bit better. Doctor kept saying it would only be and a week. Latch is good and all, no ties? Pretty sure our latch is okay.. Pedi said he had a slight lip tie but nothing that's a big deal I guess.
@hlaverett88 I am having the same issues as you and my little one is now 5 weeks. My doctor said I had a type of infection (not thrush but similar) so I'm now taking Diflucan and using a prescription nipple cream. The pain is much better and my nipples are no longer on fire, but I believe it has decreased my milk supply. I rarely feel full and baby gets really fussy after only a few minutes of feeding and pulls off. I've already gone through my whole freezer stash and had to supplement with formula. After he is asleep I pump, but only get 2oz when I used to get 5-6. Hoping this passes quickly!
Anyone else have a super messy eater? I swear this kid gets more milk on me than in his mouth. I have to cover up with a burp cloth just so my clothes aren't soaked and I got through like 3-4 burp clothes a day!

Spawn has gotten into this amazing habit of sucking until I letdown and then pulling off and nuzzling me. So we both have milk all over us. I Now put a receiving blanket over my stomach before I feed him so that maybe, just maybe, the blanket gets the brunt of the milk assault. It kind of works.

DS was super messy. I would tuck a burb cloth in my bra, like a bib for my boob, and it would get soaked every time he nursed. We used cloth diapers as burb cloths and they did pretty well at containing the mess. I think he became a neater eater at about 3 or 4 months old.

I do, it used to be worse when we used the nipple shield. He likes to let his mouth fill up with milk while he decides whether he wants to drink more or not and if he doesn't he spits it out.
By the way sometimes I put a bib on him and it helps a little.
I'm having the same issues, my baby is 3 weeks old now and we have been seeing an lc weekly because I have inverted nipples and feeding has been tough. Finally got baby to latch really well. But my milk supply is dwindling. I barely pumped 2 oz, yesterday. And my boobs hardly feel Like they are filling up

Yeah we use the nipple shield too because he can't latch without it thanks to my crummy nipples. I figured the shield was leading to his messiness. Haven't tried a bib on him. Maybe I will do that next

It's a great day for us if we don't go through several burp cloths! If she takes milk from a bottle she can be pretty messy, but we normally don't have issues if she's nursing.

We have the same issue too and we are also using a shield. I tuck one side of the burp cloth under my boob (we use cloth diapers as burp clothes) and the other side under his chin. The cloth gets soaked but at least our clothes are dry. I had the same issue with my DD and it eventually got better.

Oh yeah. I have a fast letdown too so milk just streams out of the corners of his mouth. My shirt, his face and shirt and the boppy or the bed, if we're laying down, always get soaked.
Well speaking of shields- found out why Felicity had lost her ever loving mind. She hates the nipple shield now. So back to my original question of how people transitioned off of it? She can latch but only for seconds at a time, I think because with a shield she's used to be able to take breaks where as without it she has to maintain the latch. I'm going to try the pinky thing from kellymom but I also read somewhere there's a specific bottle that might help with latch issues (I have both Avent natural and medela and I know it wasn't those). Anyone else have any tricks that worked- I'm trying to trick her to latch. Some feedings she's perfectly calm to latch with the shield where as others she just freaks after a few minutes of eating and refuses to continue. Hoping I don't have to go to EPing.
Just curious if anyone has a side that is easier than the other or if your LO feeds the same on both.
I can feed my son on my right, no problem. My left... Ughhhhhhhhhhh!!!! While we get it done, it's a struggle. My LC has shown me different options for latching on the left... Still difficult. I guess just not as relaxed as the right.
Hoping (praying!!) that down the road, we will master the left too!!
What's the longest you guys have gone without feeding/pumping? Most nights we go 6hrs but I don't like to go longer than that. Tonight DH didn't wake me up until 7hrs after LO last ate. I'm worried that's too long both for her and my supply. The LC said we didn't have to wake her to eat because she was gaining well (this was 2wks ago at her last appt). Just curious what others are doing. My LO is 6wks 2days.
ETA she only goes 2-3hrs the rest of the day/night between feedings. It's really just that one stretch where DH watches her and I sleep.

7 hours once and a while won't hurt you. You'll be in pain probably, but it shouldn't hurt your supply if it only happens every few days. Once babies get older they often sleep that long anyway so you wouldn't be waking up.

Cecily has been sleeping 7 hours for the past two nights, which is awesome, but I am hurting when I wake up!! She only feeds one side at a time due to oversupply, so I've been pumping the other side after she eats and falls back asleep. I may need to do the same before I go to bed as well. She's almost 4 weeks.

Took me a while to transition lo off the nipple shield. She only needed it for one breast but it took at least a week of starting w the shield then transitioning mid-feed to shield free with minimal success until one day and then it just "worked". We never needed the shield again. Just try to be patient and take it one feed and one day at a time.

6hrs and although I really appreciate the sleep I hate the sore leaky boobs =(. My supply has not been affected and LO has been going long periods of time consistantly for over a week now.
