Anyone else have an overactive let down that makes their lo choke? I feel so bad every time it happens. I googled some stuff just wanted to know if anything has worked for you
I have this issue in the morning when I'm over full. I found that laying back helps.
So my LO empties the boob with each feeding and I'd really like to pump to have some as back up but when I pump after he eats it's extremely painful and uncomfortable.. Any suggestions or similar experiences??

Have you tried getting a different size flange, I had some pain prior getting the correct size.

Try leaning back or laying down and positioning them over your boob. It gives them more control over the flow. Block feeding helps too. Feed on the same side 2 times in a row.

Try the football hold - it gives LO more control. This works well for me.
I'm so overwhelmed with breast feeding... LO latches, but its a struggle sometimes, and i spend 15 mins fighting her to latch... and I can't tell if she's getting enough because she falls asleep at the boob. And then an hour later she's screaming because she's hungry. When I bottle feed her expressed milk, she sleeps for 3 hours before stirring. DH doesn't think that I should pump so much, though. He thinks when I pump, I take away all of her milk and that's why she wakes up hungry. I'm thoroughly debating EPing or switching to formula because I'd rather heat up a bottle in the middle of the night than fight to get her to latch ànd still have her wake up hungry. Am I giving up too easy? I feel so overwhelmed....
@cdepperschmidt she's 18 days. I'm sure she's growth spurting and cluster feeding, but I feel like I was put at a disadvantage with her spending her first 7 days in NICU. She had a feeding tube and when it was removed they were bottle feeding her.
For what it's worth... (Keeping in mind my experience may not have relevance to yours): I lost a lot of blood during delivery and no one told me that could be a problem with respect to milk supply... So here I was, bf'ing ALOT because my LO was always hungry. We would feed for anywhere between 20 min to an hour and do it again 40 min to 90 minutes later. I found out that she wasn't getting enough milk - and that's why she was so hungry /needed constant feeding. It might be worthwhile to talk to your pedi to ensure she's tracking with weight and/or a LC to weigh her before and after a feeding to see what she's getting ...

For what it is worth, EP is hard work. I started out BF, but had to switch to EP because my LO wouldn't really BF after I was admitted to thr hospital for 4 days when he was 3 weeks old. You have to be diligent about to make sure your supply doesn't suffer, and it can be hard to find time to pump when I am home with him by myself during the day. It is definitely doable, but more work than I originally anticipated.
So LO is close to 7 weeks now and we have always used the shield due to flat nipples. Now, he's rejecting the shield and latching directly on. The initial latch is a bit painful, but once he's feeding it feels fine. I remember feeling this way initially with the shield, my question is will this pass as my nipples adjust to him feeding directly, or is this an underlying issue? He just started this 3 days ago.

I also had this problem. My LC told me its that LO is fixing their latch in the first few sucks. It should go away as they learn to latch better.
How long does this hurt for?!.. It's the latch that is the worst, then usually it'll feel better. 15 days pp.. Doc said he had a slightly thick lip tie (?), but nothing severe and might correct itself.
On a side note, I'm going to try staying to pump some this week to start getting a little stash for when I go back to school in January (the 8).. If until then I will be EB, you think it's too soon to start pumping?
I woke up and the underside of my left breast has a tender spot... I'm thinking a plugged milk duct but there is no lump and it feels ok to nurse... Has anyone had this before?

I think i did last night as I was trying to sleep. I wouldn't say it hurt, but it was uncomfortable. It was on the top part of my breast though. I just lightly massaged and pressed on it. I ended up falling asleep, but it's gone today. Can't say it was the same thing but maybe. I assumed it was maybe the beginning of a clogged duct, or I was thinking it was me just filling up with milk again. I don't know if that latter reason is plausible.

It sounds like your LO could have a lip or tongue tie. It would take that long for my baby to latch before we had her tongue tie corrected. I would have her pediatrician check out her mouth. Her upper lip should be able to touch her nose and her tongue should be able to flatten against the roof of her mouth.
Anyone else dealing with oversupply? I think I have it, I've noticed she feeds pretty fast and often pulls off when first starting and chokes a little. She also gets hiccups frequently, often in the middle of a feed. She hasn't been weighed since her one week weigh in, but she gained 11 oz in 5 days the first week. I've been pumping once a day and having DH give her a bottle to get her used to it (a friend will be watching her Thursday night), and I get about 5 oz per breast, almost all of it before my pump switches out of let down mode. We had to use the medium flow nipple on her bottle because she's so used to a fast flow that she was really mad at the slow flow. I've been trying to just feed one breast at a time, hoping it starts to normalize because my other breast gets pretty full between feeds, especially at night when she sleeps 4-5 hours.

I did, it is better now that she is eating more (17 days) but I had been advised to only pump for comfort, otherwise it would get worse, do I only pumped small amount when I was in really bad pain, she also had a super hard time latching when the breast was too hard. Currently I understood I have too forceful of a letdown, which sounds like what you have too. She chokes a lot, lets a lot of milk run around sometimes, hiccups are normal. I make her burp more often, and I try to lay back when feeding. I also block feeding so she has a calmer flow at the end. But I never reached the end of a boob yet. Seems to be milk flowing forever.
I feel bad when she chokes so bad and It sprays her in the face when she pulls back
My LO chokes from time to time too, but less through the night. I usually do only one breast at a feeding because he would be satisfied with one and wouldn't feed from the other. Then sometimes he would want both more than twice. Then that's when he would choke at both breast.
One thing I noticed my LO does that bothers me is that when he feeds sometimes and he would get very upset. He literally would scream through my breast, lost the latch and just scream. It's not diaper or anything. I usually have to calm him down walking around the house or try a pacifier so he would calm down then try again. This would go on for 10-15 minutes then he would happily feed until he falls asleep. I try burping but it doesn't always work. Sometimes he would spit up then want to feed again then spit up again. This has been going on for a few days, on and off. Gas?

Let me know if you figure it out, my LO does the same! She unlatches and then tries to re-latch frantically, but won't actually latch on and gets mad. My husband calls it the woodpecker! Usually I try burping her for a while or walking her around and then either she calms, or I try to re-latch after a while. Seems to happen most frequently at night for some reason. I wish she would take a pacifier, but so far no luck. Might try some gas drops to see if it makes a difference.

My LO does this too. Usually at night. I think it's normal nighttime fussiness. He's upset but doesn't know what he wants. I just ride it out. Kellymom.com has an article on fussing at night. Apparently it's quite normal and they stop around 3 months
For STM, when did your LO learn to latch on their own?
This LO got it down at about 2 weeks. She does not have the perfect latch the LC want, but it does not hurt and she is gaining weight so we are going with it.
DS latched perfect day 1. He was too easy, I was not prepared to have issues BF this time.
I never realized how challenging bf would be. I know some women who have had problems, but I just always thought it would come easy to me. Even after a month, it's still challenging. My nipples always hurt and my boobs are always warm. I have met with a lc and babe's latch is perfect. My body is just still getting used to the stimulation. I miss being able to sleep topless. My breasts always leak, especially at night. Some days I really feel like quitting, but I don't have the patience to deal with bottles at night.
Sorry for the vent, I am just sick of being uncomfortable. I thought I would feel better after pregnancy! Lol!
I EP due to latch issues, and my LO is 3 weeks old. She eats about 2.5 to 3 oz every 3 hours. I pump everytime she eats. I am producing 6 to 8 oz everytime I pump. She's 3 weeks old my freezer is already packed with milk. I'm a stay at home mom so I'm not really sure when I'll ever use the frozen milk but it is nice to have just in case. Since I'm producing so much, and killing myself by staying home 24/7 to be able to pump every 3 hours, I decided to try and pump every other feeding. Well now my breasts don't feel empty after I pump. I am getting less and they feel full still after I'm done pumping. I'm not really sure what to do. I massage them as I pump and it helps a little but not sure how else to get it all out. Is this just because I've tried to slow down? I just don't want to be stressing out so much over pumping every 3 hours when I don't need nearly that much milk.

No answer to your question but you should try and freeze your storage bags flat to save on space and avoid accidentaly tearing them. DH got me these trays from home depot to organize them after.

You have an over supply. It will take time to regulate. But pumping every 3 hrs and emptying them when you do makes your body think the baby needs all that milk. I would cut out a pumping sessions,
That's a much better idea to freeze them flat. Thanks!
With my daughter I didn't EP but I always had an entire deep freezer full. It might be worth it to you to invest in one. I also bought a few plastic baskets and would lay the milk flat at first to freeze it and then stand it up in order of when I pumped it so I made sure to use it in order. I had so much I donated at least a thousand ounces to 2 different babies.

It is a huge challenge and commitment ... Couldn't agree more! I'm only 2 weeks in, every day I'm learning. Today I'm heading out to a BF Circle. It's a free gathering that one of our local shops offers for mamas to support one another. Do you have anything like this available to you? If so, I'd definitely suggest checking it out!
This is the same thing I do, until I figured it out LO would be choking/coughing/pulling off and getting sprayed in the face with milk. Laying back or side lying seems to help the most, as well as burping frequently during the nursing.
Just wanted to update everyone since I've felt so supported here! My LO had a latch issue and just wouldn't take the boob, so we have been pumping and bottle feeding...he was doing fine but we kept trying to BF...today we finally had a successful latch! We used the nipple shield to get him going and then I was able to remove it and he relatched...he didn't even need it on the other side...I'm so hopeful that this will continue...I've got a good supply stored up just in case but hopefully Emmett and I have finally figured this out!
For anyone struggling with supply and pumping, I wanted to share that I ordered an insert because I felt my nipple were too small for the standard 25mm falanges. I ordered something called a flexshield areola simulator which reduces the falange to 21mm. That, plus upping the time I pump at each session (I set a timer for 30 mins) has almost doubled my output!
Do LOs root to comfort nurse too? Every single time something has woken spawn up, no matter how short of a time frame that he's been out, he starts frantically rooting again.
I. Hate. Growth spurts. That's what this is, right? He's 4 weeks.

Block feeding helps too. Feed on the same side 2 times in a row.
DH doesn't think that I should pump so much, though. He thinks when I pump, I take away all of her milk and that's why she wakes up hungry.

I've always read 24 hours. I'm not sure if that is the current guideline, but it's what I go by.
