My nurse said the rule of thumb was 50 percent -should- make it to blast, although that may vary depending on egg quality/etc. I had 5 fertilize and ended up with 2 blasts so that was about right for me. I've heard anywhere from 20 to 40% in the literature.

Congrats @manders85-2! That's a great report. I had 33 retrieved, 21 matured and 14 fertilized and they all made to D5 so I expected all of yours making it! And I didn't have OHSS maybe because of the cabergoline and Gatorade. I went crazy on the gatorade and stopped drinking water, all I was drinking was the Gatorade and high sodium diet.

@manders85-2 I was told 50% is average. I've seen as little as 30% loss and as much as 90%. You just never know, but hope for the best, prepare for the worst. They don't call you between now and day 5? That's torture! My clinic caked on day 1, 3, and 5 to update.

@stromette I’m feeling good. We tranfer 2 embryos and now the wait begins. We only had 4 left out of he 9 fertilized so the other 2 are going to be frozen.

Manders- That’s a great report.

Knottie- Your results are wonderful! That’s great you had some to freeze.

Babydust- That is nice to jump right back into things! Won’t be long! You are lucky to have some in the freezer.

AFM- I had my beta today, wont find out until tomorrow but I’m not hopeful at all because I had negative home tests. I will be moving on to my 4th attemp of IVF this year! Just bad news after bad news seems to never end. Sometimes it’s really hard to feel hopeful anymore. Out of both times I never had embryos make it to blast by day 5 but all my embryos are kicking add in day 3 so I think I’m going to have the doctor transfer as many as he’s allowed of day 3. Maybe mine just don’t do well in the dish. I don’t know..... so many things to think about.

I know how disappointing it is especially after putting so much time, money, and hope into these cycles and wanting it to work so badly. Try to stay hopeful though for your next cycle! I think if your clinic is willing to do day 3 transfers it's something to look into! We are all routing for you

I had blood and ultrasound again this morning. They upped my dose of gonal f again. They said I had 12 follicles on each side, but the doctor only read out about 13-14 numbers of sizeable ones. They ranged from 8-14, but only 2 of them were above 10. I asked if she knew how many I'd realistically have, and she said they don't know, that until they reach 10 they don't know if the smaller ones will continue to grow or not. It made me a little worried and upset that there are only 2 above 10 right now. Tuesday I had all 7s, 8s, 9s...So I'm worried the majority didn't grow and are still at 8-9. I have to now wait until Saturday to go back in for another ultrasound

@nicole030985 let us know about your beta but I’m sorry your at home tests have shown negative. It just really sucks. Hoping for a miracle positive beta for you.

@mkr_0128 an upped dose can really help plus things can take off fast towards the end! My advice would just be ask good questions when you’re there and then trust that they’re going to get you to where you need to be for your egg retrieval.

@knottiee829c - when do you transfer the two?? Sorry if I missed it! Keep us up to date!

And yes, no call on day 3! We have to wait until day 6 to learn how many have made it and are getting ccs testing and then frozen! Ah!

@mkr_0128 don’t be upset like I said before my follicles where small I had do 2 extra days of stims and I still ended up with 11 mature eggs. Non of my follicles where over 16mm the day I triggered.

So I had blood and ultrasound this morning, it went well, I think! I was trying to count in my head as the doctor was reading off follicle sizes. There were about 12 on each side he said... And I counted 9 out of 12 on each side that were 11+. Most of them were 12s and 13s. I go back Monday again, and I'm assuming I will either trigger Monday night if they are big enough by then, or if they are close i assume id go back in Tuesday for an ultrasound and maybe trigger Tuesday night? Either way, I'll be a day or 2 behind my initial schedule, but no big deal! Staying on the same doses unless I hear otherwise. I hope everything is doing well!

They haven't told me my E2 since Sunday, and I guess I could have asked at my last 3 appointments... I'm assuming it's okay since they haven't said anything otherwise buutttt I'll have to check in with them about it Monday lol. Have you gotten any updated information on your schedule yet??

Bringing my mom with me because she has been researching also. Going to interrogate the doctor. lol This shit needs to get figured out this time because it’s taking way too long. He needs to get me some embryos to freeze! Already spoke with my principal at work so she is informed I will be going through this yet again.

Totally understand @mkr_0128 and last days of stims can be miserable and wanted to be done with this phase, I was the same way. And I agree if they didn't mention your E2 you should be ok on that.
AFM I just received my calendar and they keeping on BCP for an entire cycle!!!!! Haaaaaa! I'm soooooo mad! And my estimate date for the FET is October 24! That's like 2 months! I'm so frustrated. They did the same thing for my fresh transfer putting on BCP for a month. This place is so busy, I'm so sad, the wait is killing me!
@nicole030985, good that your mom and you have done some research. Its good to go prepare. Hoping that everything goes well for you

I don't know the theory behind how long to be on BCP but I was on mine for almost 5 weeks. The wait to get started is seriously one of the worst. I called a nurse with a question the other day and was almost in tears after hearing the voice mail that the October cycle was full and the next cycle is in January! I'm trying not to be negative and assume mine won't work, butttttt I was hoping to have a few frozen to try a FET in the October cycle if need be. We are moving across the country in November and we will have to start all over again at a new clinic and the thought of going through all the paperwork/orientation/labs/wait again is so upsetting and frustrating. It's hard to believe the wait at these places are so long!! I guess I was naive thinking it would just be a constant ongoing process and when you were done with once cycle you just started again no matter what week or month it was. I'm not sure why they only do it like 5 times a year (at least at my place). Do you have anything fun coming up that will make the weeks go faster??

Hi ladies, I didn’t realize places did that (like 5 times a year?) is not like we haven’t waited enough. So frustrating I really didn’t ask at my clinic but even thought it seems like they have a lot of people they took me in right away when o first called for my initial app. So blessed there. @mkr_0128 if you move you can tranfer all your history so you’ll be ok there hopefully that’s not needed and this cycle works.
I just been waiting and waiting my beta day can’t get here fast enough. I’m working a lot so it keep my mind occupied but still I’m so desperate to test.

@knottiee829c yea I'm doing it at a military hospital, so I'm not sure how often you can try at regular facilities or if they typically have wait lists. That's awesome you didn't have to wait though! I have called the hospital in WA though and they said they will need updated testing and they do cycles every other month "for now". They told me I could call around October to do a phone visit with the doctor and work on getting all the labs and stuff done again in the meantime. At least I'd have all the info from this cycle so they have a starting point for me. I'm trying to be proactive but the thought of starting over is overwhelming. I'm going to put it out of my mind though until I make it through this cycle, fingers crossed I won't need it right away!

Hang in there though your wait is coming to an end soon!!!!!

Hi all,

My name is Amber and we are in the middle of our first IVF round. My husband and I have been TTC for 2 years. Doctor said all our numbers were great and that we are in that small bucket of "unexplained infertility" which is beyond frustrating to hear. Earlier this year we had 2 failed IUIs and decided to move on. I just had an ER this past week. 18 follicles resulted in 11 eggs of which 9 were mature but thus far only 2 have fertilized.

Not feeling very confident about the situation and the wait to see if we get anything usable is driving me insane. Send me good thoughts! Just need one good one! And good luck to everyone else with their cycles

You guys sound a bit like us (all normal, looks good!, unexplained) -- and similar IVF retrievals/etc (although we got a few more fertilized). My retrieval last year of around 15 follicles yielded 10 eggs (9 were mature) and 5 fertilized.

Did your clinic use ICSI for this cycle? If you're having fertilization issues, it can help with that. I was also on a bunch of supplements to improve egg quality like CoQ10.

But it -can- work even if you only get a few eggs fertilized and only 1 or 2 blasts -- both of our blasts implanted and while one did not develop properly after 8 weeks, the other is my little girl now! As you said, you just need one to stick! I'm rooting for you!

And now your doctor has more information about you and can design a better future protocol if needed. The best part about being unexplained is that there is nothing glaringly wrong going on and my RE says many unexplained couples have better success with getting and staying pregnant with the right embryos. He feels most unexplained cases occur because there is an issue at the gamete level with the eggs and sperm developing embryos and with IVF, you can hopefully get around that by the lab doing the "work" for you and the rest of the process works like it's supposed to. We have a little discussion on the board here somewhere about those of us who are in the "lucky" pool of being unexplained.

Thanks for the encouragement @mbradfo2! I am certainly hoping that these 2 are champs and get us where we need to be! My doc has had me on CoQ10, Vitamin D and DHEA since day 1. They said they were very surprised that only 2 fertilized. I know I signed off to authorize ICSI but I am not sure yet if they used that method or not. Yesterdays update came from my nurse and I am not sure if she had that information on hand.

You mentioned retrieval(s)...have you been through this a few times? I am just curious about the success rates for others that have a situation similar to ours. I guess on the one hand you can look at unexplained as better but I am so analytical that not having a reason drives me crazy.

We did a fresh cycle but unfortunately didn't work. We're having our 1st FET in October too. Hoping that the FET will do the trick for us as we've been told that FET has a greater percentage of success compare to fresh transfer, so if you can do FET go for it! so far have been diagnosed unexplained fertility as well. GL to you!

No progression on the embryos and no answers as to why. Nurse said they watch them through day 6 but this wasn't a good sign.

Thanks for the good thoughts ladies. Hard to keep positive right now. We have lost faith with this Dr and will probably move to a different clinic. Unfortunately we feel they have made several moves that were not in our best interest and in some cases dishonest. Supposed to speak to the embryologist today but I am not expecting good news. I have done a lot of research on this entire process and I know the numbers are not currently in our favor. Good luck on your FET @babydust2507!! I was also told that has a better chance of working since it gives your body time to heal from ER and presents a better environment to accept the embies! Ultimately our goal is to transfer 2 but it looks like we will be doing a second round to get there. Wish me luck!

We got our day 6 blastocyst and freeze report!! It was a long 5 days to wait but it’s good news! Out of 18 fertilized embryos, 12 made it to day 5 and freeze with biopsy for ccs screening! Now we wait 1-2 weeks for the results of the comprehensive chromosome screening!

I’m sorry about the tough news, @ambers18, but it really only takes one and I’ve read so many women’s success stories who transferred one “eh” grade embryo and got their nothing but eh miracle, rainbow bundle! I hear you on wanting a doctor you can trust and would hate not trusting my office like that. It’s too important.
