My random moment this week has been conversations with my 3 year old... here's one that ended up pretty funny.
We're working on re-doing our upstairs guest room to make his bedroom to then start to refresh the nursery for #2. Mommy: "Augustus, look at the Big Boy Bedding I ordered for you!" Augustus: "That's not right, try again mama.
Pennsylvania is weird. I live very close to philly, so we have the city mentality...which is to say everyone is out for their own gain.
But somewhere around the middle of state, it's like being in the south (southern accents and all!) so the mentality changes and people mostly have better manners.
I haven't really benefitted yet from being large and pregnant since most people can't tell I'm pregnant. I'm not sure if it's a compliment or an insult though
I agree with others...Virginia here and I rarely (pregnant or not) have someone not hold a door, etc. I don't think I've noticed any difference since I've been pregnant, but I don't take public transportation.
I passed my one hour glucose screen. I got my results immediately in the office. My number was 115 and my practice said their cutoff was 150.

I meant to add that I celebrated with a poptart for breakfast this morning. It would have been two, but the second was dropped into the hairy abyss between my driver seat and center console. So I'll never see it again.

@missteacherlady16 you said it perfectly! I lived in Philly for 10 years and honestly have never been in a place with more miserable people On the other hand, we live in Pittsburgh now and everyone is SO nice and polite. DH is from rural central PA and the first time I visited Pittsburgh with him he told me I wasn't nice enough to live here haha. Apparently when the waiter/waitress asks "hi, how are you", it's not rhetorical and they actually wait for you to answer the question. If you just respond with "hi", they stare at you. I'm from NYC where everyone is a combination of busy yet polite.
I live in the Midwest too. While I don't find people overly friendly, they're not exactly rude either. People always hold the door open for the people behind them, etc. But people have definitely not been any more polite to me since being pregnant, which kind of sucks. Lol
Texas here and like the other ladies from the south, I find that most people are generally nice. We of course have our fair share of assholes, but for the most part, people are typically friendly & accommodating. I sometimes take this for granted and then when I travel elsewhere I have a bit of a culture shock of, "Gah, why are people so rude??!"
@CopperBoom86@sjo_thetwins Is this where I insert the "American by Birth, Southern by the Grace of God" motto? Don't judge me but I may or may not have had a sign that said this as a teenager.
A bit cheesy, but so true! There are definitely things I don't like about the South, but all things considered, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!
The only thing I don't like about the South is this hot and humid weather (which I'm in NC so not nearly as bad as those in the deep south). However, I would take that and a fabulous fall, mild winter, and nice people over anything else. I never want to live anywhere other than here.
I live in Alabama, and I love it! While there are still the stereotypes, it really is a nice place to live. My British husband is always commenting about how much strangers will talk to each other here. Going to work and walking across the street downtown? The man who crosses your path smiles and says "Good morning!" Line taking forever at the grocery store? The lady behind you will make small talk with you about all of the beer and hot dogs you're buying ("looks like someone's having a cookout! it'll be great weather for it this weekend"). In the doctor's office waiting room where there is a kid screaming bloody murder on the other side? Out comes a nurse or fellow patient to help with a smile and a purple sucker.
Also, let's be honest. Nothing brings a group of strangers together like their shared love of a college football team. Fall in the South is great...especially if your team is doing well!
@bamacoop And those of us who have crappy football teams still enjoy the fall, just with a larger beer can pyramid. (at least before pregnancy happened)

@bamacoop - I'm really hoping this baby doesn't decide to come on a Saturday. I'm afraid no one will come see us! I've checked both schedules and the weekend closest to my due date Bama plays A&M and Auburn plays Arkansas. Neither are HUGE games, but I'm still nervous!

I've totally checked this out too. South Carolina plays UGA the weekend before my due date and we have a bye the weekend after. Luckily most of my local friends won't be affected by this since not many are USC fans here.
Edited to add: Giving birth during the UGA game would NOT be good for my blood pressure! Haha

San Diego, CA here and I haven't gotten special treatment from being pregnant. HA. No one has given up a seat for me in waiting rooms, etc, or jeez, even at the park!
The most I've gotten was a random lady at the farmer's market saying I was blooming and beautiful (thank you lady, you made my day!) and a stranger at my barre class saying I was her hero because she sees me struggling and huffing and puffing in class and still show up every week.
But the men, pfffft, nada. Just last week I was at a popular ramen place, waiting for my takeout order to be done... there were other men waiting for their orders too. Think they offered me a chair to sit on? NOPE! They just continued doing their thing on their phone. So engrossed.
I need to ask a random dumb question (this is, I think SS worthy, but I feel comfortable enough with y'all to let the sporadic SS question fly)... So, we're not allowed to take a super hot bath or get in a sauna or anything... Do you think I'm causing any damage laying out at the beach? It's wicked hot today (101 high with the heat index even higher). I'm getting in the water here and there, but it is really hot and my belly is definitely out there in the sun. Wondering if I should hang back in the shade.
Thanks in advance for not flaming me for this question...

Ehhhhh I've been on the beach and at the pool all summer. I have been more worried about staying hydrated and not getting overheated. I think if you're being careful with that, it's fine. But I'm no expert....just a beach bum

@bnsmith85 hmmmmmm, that's a good one. I'm actually not sure of the answer (on whether it's safe or not), but I do know you burn faster when pregnant, so make sure you're lathering up the extra sun protection.... and if it were me, I'd be drinking a shitton of water just to be on the safe side.
I was wondering if you burn faster @annabenanna! I'm fair skinned so I've been lathering up like crazy and still felt like I've needed more than usual.
@ibabyloveb87 - I'm actually hoping to hear just those kinds of things... "I'm doing it and feel okay about it" or "I did it with my DD/DS and they're fine."
I think you'll be just fine @bnsmith85, just drink lots of water and take a dip every now and then to cool your body temp down. Besides, that water is probably gonna feel amazing. I lay out at the beach every weekend for the most part, but go in the water every hour or so to cool down.
@bnsmith85 You definitely burn easier, so get that sunscreen on! We're supposed to be wearing baby sunscreen, but it didn't seem to do much for me. Maybe I just didn't apply it enough. Don't get overheated and drink lots of water! I was at the lake on the 17th, burned real bad, but stayed cool and drank about 4 giant bottles of water. If you get too much sun, you'll need to drink extra water for the next few days too.
@bnsmith85 yup just echoing what others have said. Make sure you drink lots of water and use extra sunscreen because you can burn faster, especially on the tummy. The danger with hot baths/saunas is that it raises your core body temp so hopping in the water to cool down every once in a while sounds like a good plan to me!
I live in Los Angeles, and for the most part in regular life I hate people. It's always very hit or miss here, regardless of being pregnant, but when people are rude or assholes, they're REALLY assholes. I like to be pleasantly surprised when they're nice and friendly.
I laid out for a week at the beach earlier this month and everything is fine with baby. I did get in the water a lot because I felt like I got really hot really fast. I also found out I'm now allergic to regular sunscreen and got the worst rash on my ankles.

Not looking forward to this week. DS turns 3 next week so he ages out of the early intervention service program so we have final appointments with each of his service providers this week (OT, ST and behavior) AND we're headed to the children's hospital in Seattle today to have his hearing checked because he's borderline hearing deficient according to our regular audiologist so we got referred out. Yay
@bnsmith85 - I personally wouldn't. I overheat and burn easily, so I usually stay under my umbrella except to take a quick dip in the water.
Re baby sunscreens...I've been using them with no problem - this coming from someone who got a peeling sunburn from 20 total minutes in the sun (obv wasn't wearing sunscreen that day). It goes on really thick and is a bit of a workout to rub in correctly, but it works really well. My skin will get red while I'm out, but it's from being for. As soon as I'm inside again and cool down, it fades. Just make sure to apply often (I do about once every 60-90 min, or more frequently if sweating profusely or swimming)
I think the general wisdom about heat of any kind is to pay attention to how you feel, and then act accordingly. If you're too hot, get in water or find shade/AC. Women have been pregnant in hot weather for about as long as humanity, so we've got some built in indicators
I go to the pool quite a bit in the hot weather, and I've just been spending a lot more time in the water than laying out. I just make sure to stay really well hydrated and maybe try to get some shade with an umbrella. I find that being out in the sun and heat effects me a lot more, but being in water feels amazing. Just try to listen to your body. I also notice feeling more fatigued (and definitely more swollen) after being in the heat.
@bnsmith85 you are probably fine, but I'd try to stick to a shady area, or not stay out for too long, and also make sure to stay hydrated. Over 100 degrees is rough when not pregnant.
ETA: a coworker mentioned that when she was pregnant, she went to the beach. She dug a hole in the sand for her belly and laid on her stomach!! So I total endorce that, it sounds awesome!!
Re: rude cities. I live in DC. Enough said. It's a "me, me, me mentality". Someone actually ran to get in the Starbucks line before me yesterday. Yea, thanks. I've noticed zero difference on the preferential treatment from strangers. Although, my dry cleaner carried my clothes to my car, and the grocery store clerk asked if I needed someone to help me load groceries into my car. So that was nice!!
i spent a week in Destin and was at the beach every day. My face broke out in a rash due to a sunscreen but I knew this in the middle of summer so be careful with your sunscreens. I also have a pool in my back yard and have been in there every weekend. Just make sure you stay cool and you'll be ok.
I had FI dig a hole in the sand and I put down a baby float in the hole so I could lay on my belly. Super comfy!
I didn't use baby sunscreen. I used sensitive skin sunscreen on my face of 70 SPF (after the rash happened) and the rest of my body got SPF 15, except for my legs which got straight up tanning oil.
I tan easily though and also wear a tankini so my belly wasn't exposed to the sun.
Flame away on the skin cancer posts. I get it all the time.
I'm SO jealous of all you who've been laying by a pool or at the beach!!!! I'm so used to vacationing at least 3-4 times a year and we did NOTHING this year due to renovating and getting ready for our little man to arrive.

I love the float idea @mizzkbrat! I dug a little hole for it yesterday but it was kind of uncomfortable bc I made the hole way too big and the edges weren't rounded so it was just hard. I will be making this happen!
