Re: Baby Names

  • I had a name question I wanted to put out there: We've got our boy named picked out, and so far I've got a shortlist of three girl names.  DH likes them, but he raised some mild concerns about each of them, and I wanted to get some outside opinions:

Miranda - the nickname "Randi/Randy" might come up, which we really don't like and could lead to teasing (randy=slang for horny)
Celia - similar to more common name "Cecelia" so DH wonders if people will see it and automatically call her Cecelia instead
Sylvia/Silvia - does it sound too close to saliva? (i.e., teasing again)

I know it's probably impossible to pick a name that is completely immune to teasing and/or mispronouncing, but we're trying to do a little advance troubleshooting.  So I guess my question is, how likely do people think it is that any of these concerns would actually be a problem?  Has anyone ever heard of a Miranda getting the nickname Randi, or a Sylvia being teased as Sylvia Saliva?

    I love the name Sylvie.

I knew a Miranda and that's all she went by. When your baby is little, you can correct/control nicknames. But I do think there's a chance in school that friends or even your own child could choose a nickname you don't like.

Celia is stuck in my head as Mike's girlfriend on Monsters Inc (the one with snakes for her hair). But not everyone has a toddler in love with that movie!

I like Sylvia. It seems like an old fashioned name ready to be used again.

I know a couple women named Randi and one male Randy. It doesn't seem to be a problem for them and it's not a nickname for them. I also grew up with a Celia, love that name and she did fine, no one had issues with it
  • We've had a boy name picked out since week 5, lol. I've always wanted Landon. Middle name will either be Christopher or Christopher Lee. My family does dad or grandpa for middle and his does two middle names. So I want to combine the two. I really want a girl but at a loss for names right now.
  • August Lee for boy and Scout Corrine for a girl. Hubby and I both agree on these names. I love them! Getting excited to find out the gender!

I know 4 or 5 girls named Miranda and have never heard them referred to as Randy.

Celia - I don't think anyone would just call her Cecilia. Is he thinking they will read it wrong? I doubt it would be an issue.

Sylvia/Silvia - I wouldn't have put the saliva connection together. I mean a lot of names sounds like something else. That's not really a big deal of a word.

I like all your names. I would vote Celia then Sylvia a close second.

  • DH insists on picking the first name this time around. He likes Corwin for a boy and Veronica for a girl. I can't love Corwin as a first name and would call Veronica "Ronie" which DH doesn't like. Looks like this baby may not have a name until we meet him or her.

I've always liked the name Sylvia.
It would be on our list but it's my husbands aunts name and he vetoed it.

  • My BFF is the one who is possibly "stealing" our girl name. She has known this particular name is the name I have wanted for a girl my whole life and still insists that we never talked about it and that if she were to have a girl first she would use it anyway and that SHE came up with using it. The last time we talked about names before that convo she insisted she was using a different name if #3 was a girl. I'm wishing a third boy on her.

Either way, before I got pregnant when this came up, Hubby and I agreed to use it anyway. They live 4 hours away and I doubt our kids will have much interaction. I can't stand her husband and he still calls me a lush and a whore behind my back so...

  • For a girl we are thinking Abigail and a boy we are naming after my husband because he is the 3rd so our baby would be the 4th. His name is Richard Armond.

  • So far we like Daegan and Declan for a boy and Drew and Darby for a girl. Jean is a middle name in my family and George is a middle name in hubby's family. So probably choosing those for middle names!
  • We like traditional names - for a girl we are going to name her Abigail and if it is a boy we are going to name him Michael. Nothing too trendy - we have pretty traditional names and I've always liked that!
  • Well, I thought we had ours all picked out, but my husband changed his mind. We picked another name for a girl quickly and I think we're both cool with it. But boy names are giving us (mostly him) fits. He's decided that he can't give the kid the name of anyone who's ever rubbed him the wrong way (he's kind of misanthropic, so that's a lot of people) nor does he want to name him after anyone he knows and likes because he's decided he's against naming a baby in honor of someone. Neither of us are into newer, trendy names. So that leaves us...pretty much nowhere. Here's hoping it's a girl. SMH

  • Boy names: Levi or Dean
Not totally sure about girls names, my daughter's name is Gabriella, so would rather not have another name ending in Ella...
I like Adi and Isla so far
  • We really like Madeleine Victoria for a girl and Andrew for a boy. We are debating on boys middle name. I said Theodore, and that was vetoed. Possible Alexander. We also really like Elliot for a little girl. Luckily we still have a bit of time before we have to decide :)

    Regret posting my names. Sorry.

I've had my girl name picked out for years but not spelling and I've only told my grandmother because she is the inspiration. Viley Ann. I like violet too

For a boy, Jesse has decided to name him after his grandfather figure Hayes Paul. He also likes Ezra which I don't.. I really liked Lincoln and Wesley but he vetoed both lol

Anything could change. My feelings towards both names change by the minute..

Viley? Is that a typo? It makes me think "vile" and that's sort of awful, sorry!

  • Oliver Patrick for a boy, and I like Giuliana for a girl but DH is campaigning for Lauren or Chelsea. They're nice names but a little vanilla for my taste. Plus he only likes Chelsea bc it's the name of his favorite soccer team and I think it would be embarrassing for people to know that's why he chose that.

This sounds just like my husband.
Our son's name wasn't something either of us LOVED. It was just the only name neither of us had a major problem with (my husband being the one with a lot of problems). My son is now two and the name has grown on him.
I am not looking forward to having a serious name conversation with him this time around.

  • DH and I haven't agreed completely on any yet. But for a boy I like Theo, Ezra, Kayden and Beckett. For girls I like Elle, Gianna, and Quinn. Any thoughts?:)

    Beckett-Love it!
My best friend just named her girl Quinn so of course I love it! ;)
Gianna- now that is a unique and beautiful name! :)

For a girl Lyola Lee. We would call her Lola. Lyola is my grandmother's name and me and my husband both love it. For a boy Alaric Jackson. This was my husband's pick and it's grown on me.
  • I didn't think I would ever have a girl but I have a strong feeling that this LO is a girl! Same feeling I had that my son would be a boy. Can't explain it. If I am correct, she will be named Scarlet Juliette!
  • @natsfans84 I love Giuliana! And Oliver is the name we have chosen so far as well, at least it's the first name we agreed upon :) Although I have a problem with trendy names so we'll see if it sticks!

  • For a girl we're going with Adeline Susan (after my grammy and mom :) ) We've had the first name picked out for 7 years!
For a boy we're going with Malachi Asher (no good boy names in the family so we're going Biblical!)

So far we've been telling anyone who wants to know and haven't gotten any weird looks or negative reactions. Could be because we're very enthusiastic when we say it or because we explain the reason for our choices . . . or we just have awesome friends lol
  • We agreed on a girl name - Alexandria Rose.

We can't agree on a boys name at all because he keeps joking around about boy names!

But his whole family thinks it is going to be a girl (but he desperately wants a boy).
  • This is our first pregnancy, and we're definitely finding out the sex of the baby when we can!

I've been making lists on Nameberry. My problem is I have a lot of guilty pleasure names that I'm not sure I could actually use on a kid because of spelling/ pronunciation that I know everyone will butcher! For a boy we husband like Xavier a lot. I'm in love with Saorise for a girl.

  • I have given my husband soooo many girl name options...harper, kinley, raegan, peyton, rylee, haylee, paisley, sydney, kameron...he has given me 2: Roxanne and liberty. I said no to Roxanne and told him I'd think about liberty...and I think no. Hopefully it'll be a boy!

  • We have a girl name and a boy name. Middle names are the same as the parents middle name because its a family tradition. I usually love traditional Jewish names since I'm Jewish but SO is named after his mom's favorite soap opera so we kinda went that route. We picked out names from characters from 2 favorite shows.
  • @jaybirdpop Arrow is exactly why DH wants to name a boy Oliver too! I'm not at all into superhero stuff but Oliver is head and shoulders above some of the other "fantasy" names he's suggested, and it's one of the only names we actually both like so it was our clear winner :) Girls names aren't so easy though!

  • I'm having a hard time coming up with boy names I'm in love with this time around. My son's name is Henry Jonah and we call him Jonah. I think the names Avery, Cameron, and Holden are nice. I LOVE the name Emma for a girl. Maybe Emma Marie or Emma Leigh.

  • We like Elijah for a boy. I like Hazel and Claire for a girl, but not sure how H feels on those.

We already have Benjamin and Lena.

Mom to Benjamin 6/2011 and Lena 5/2013; baby 3 on the way

  • Was your husband's mom Ava or Mary? I like both, but it seems a little choppy together. That said, I'd still go with it probably. We gave my daughter my husband's mom's middle name to honor her, though I wasn't crazy about it or the flow.

I think Spencer Mack sounds cool! Maybe Mack as the middle name?

My husband is set on a girl having his mother's name, so I'm thinking Ava Mary. But for a boy, I'm a little torn. My grandfather was a remarkable man, named Mack. My hubby is Spencer. I'd love to use Mack Spencer for a boy, but I'm not sure. What do you ladies think?

  • @vjraab I like all those names. Maybe consider Ava Marie? To me Ava Mary sounds close to Ave Maria. Mack is super cute for a baby and I can see it as good for an adult too.
  • I have Regan Kimberly from my first marriage and he has Madison Nicole from a previous relationship. I think we should keep the president name "tradition" with this one. I LOVE Kennedy for a girl (he's vetoed). Lincoln for either a girl or boy (he says no). Monroe for a girl (again - no from him)....

    Other than president names....
He likes Greyson for a boy and I think it's okay but not great.
I like Wyatt for a girl or boy too. He doesn't.
He doesn't like any girl names - the only agreement is that the middle name will be Danielle because that's his sisters middle name (and she set us up).

Basically he hates ALL the names. Ever. Lol
