We settled oh Cohen for a boy. Our top girl names are Shae or Farrah right now. Sloane was our girl name until I got pregnant and now I am hot and cold on it but H still loves it.
I would recommend researching this name a bit. It's considered pretty offensive to a lot of people. No judgment here... just thought you should be aware.

I love Sloane! It totally makes me think of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. One of my all time favorites.
That said, I wouldn't worry about that association too much. The movie is older and more of a cult classic.
I would totally try to add it to our girl list but DH would totally call me out for it.

  • My Levi is 1 today!! Love that name!! We are thinking Hayes Michael for a boy and Nora or Thea FN for a girl with either Erin or Ann for a MN. All are family names. I don't love Hayes bc haze but H love loves it. It was his great uncles name. My grandmas name was Norma, I am not I love with it but would be nice to honor her- this is where I derived Nora.

For girls we have Lily, Zoey, and Hazel (my dad's grandmother's name). And for the middle name - Dawn. It's my middle name as well.

For boys we have Ashton, Ethan, and Dean (as in Winchester ;) ). With the middle name James. James is DH's name and is also a family name on my side of the family.

My vote is Ashton for a boy, and I can't pick between Zoey/Hazel for a girl!

Our DD is Emma Jane - Emma is a great grandmother's name on my side. And Jane is for my Mother and Grandmother.

My problem is that my family has a tradition of naming kids with the same first letter...
For example, my mom's oldest sister named her six kids: Brandon, Beau, Blake, Brady, Brooke, and Benjamin.

So we're torn on whether or not we should go with another 'e' name or just pick a name we both really like. My family wouldn't care either way, we just don't know if we want to carry on the tradition.

Love Ethan James and Hazel Dawn!!!
Ashton James is a good pick too :)
  • vjraabvjraab member
Her name was Mary. I just like Ava. But maybe a longer name for the first name. I hadn't thought of Spencer Mack though. That does have a better flow than Mack Spencer. Thanks!
  • We have already found out we are having a girl! Her name is Elisabeth (Ellie) Grace.
  • We have so many options for boy names that we loved.  I think we have it narrowed down to James, Lucca, and Paul!

Obviously, the name Dean is a winner in my book ;)
  • My name is an alliteration, and I love it.  If we have a girl, Katherine (Katie) K will be her name.

My hubs picked the boy name of Alexander.  Its okay, but I hate all the nick names, Alex, Al, Xander, bleh.

Middle names will be with Js, so we would just call him AJ.
  • @jaybirdpop I have a feeling I have twins (or I am insane.  Should find out tomorrow).  If they are boy/girl, told the hubs I shall call them Luke and Leia.  He wants to veto, but we'll see.

For boys, I like the idea of starting with the same letter, or A and B, like baby A and baby B.  Since my husband likes Alexander, I was playing with Bartholomew.

But then we call him Bart?  ¡Ay, caramba!
  • Torgeir (tori) for a boy and Ingrid for a girl!
  • So the 3 children we have so far are: Isabella Marie, Savannah Reign, and Bradley Reyes.

Our top runners for baby #4 are:
G: McKinley Grace, we live in Alaska so we would love her to have an Alaskan name.
B: Knox Timothy (Timothy is hub's first name) or
B: Remington Timothy (hub's is big into his guns & rifles) Remington Timothy would be a long name to spell though. I like Remi for short too

    Isabella {09-02-05} & Savannah {03-02-07} & Bradley {02-06-10}

  • Girl - Branlee Alexandra
Boy - Parker Branan or Branan Parker

I still can't decide on the boy name. Maybe you guys can help! Branan is my husband's middle name which I'm in love with and always have been, and Parker is my maiden name. Pick one!

@g8trkim and @notasycophant whoa ladies, THANK YOU I am not Jewish and had nooo idea. Honestly saw it on a list of names and the meaning was listed as a priest in a temple and figured that was okay. Obvs not naming our boy Cohen anymore. That's why I posted here, I don't want to share our names with the people in our lives but I knew red flags would be raised here if needed. I was oblivious, thanks again!

ETA: After a little research I discovered that while Cohen is (and should be) off limits, the spelling Coen is Dutch for "brave." Still too close to the religious version? Or do ya'll think Coen would be PC?

As a Cohen myself, I think Coen is fine. I'd just be a little worried about pronunciation. Because, looking at it, I'd pronounce it Cone. Are you still going for the Cohen pronunciation?

I don't know anything about Coen. The meaning is nice. I would assume it's the same pronunciation but I think a lot of people would misspell it and/or side eye it thinking is Cohen. Just some things to consider.

  • We've always had our girl name picked out; serenity violet. But boy named were definitely a lot harder but we finally decided on Ezra Dean.

Yes, same pronunciation. I know there is the Scottish version, Cowen (but it reminds me of Cow). Coen is a used in Finland as a nickname for Connrad. There is also Koen.
But, consider this.. As a Cohen yourself if I met you at a playground and was like "Hey this is my kid Coen," would your knee-jerk reaction be to take offense or would you be like, "Ok cool lady, how do you spell that?" That matters to me.. the kid would have to live with it. If it's truly no big deal, I really, really adore the name. But if you'd find yourself biting your tongue at the park after meeting us, that is something I would want to know.

I wouldn't be offended by it, but without knowing the spelling, I'd think it was weird.

I wouldn't like think about it an hour later or anything. But, my dad is jewish and I'm only half and don't practice - so I'd maybe run it by a jewish friend?

  • Love seeing all the name ideas!  Hubby and I have discussed names a total of 2 times! We are kinda waiting to find out the gender first.  We like John Luke, and call him Luke.  Thats about all we have come up with though.  I've been so sick that all I want to think about is getting better right now!

    Crew
    Maddox
    Jagger

All of your other kids have great timeless names. McKinley, Knox, and Remington are all very trendy and might seem dated in ten or twenty years. Would you be open to suggestions? (For starters, Timothy and Grace would be great first names).

  • We settled on the girl name!! Zadie Eleanor . I have been in love with the name Eleanor for a few years now and wanted it to be the first name, but decided to nicks it so my girl was not EZ, cute but setting up a tease for a girl. Zadie is my ggggrandmothers name. I looked up my family tree for names. Now to decide on a boy name!

I wouldn't worry abut the EZ initials and stick with Eleanor Zadie. (I think there would be more teasing with an odd first name than initials).

  • I had a name question I wanted to put out there: We've got our boy named picked out, and so far I've got a shortlist of three girl names.  DH likes them, but he raised some mild concerns about each of them, and I wanted to get some outside opinions:

Miranda - the nickname "Randi/Randy" might come up, which we really don't like and could lead to teasing (randy=slang for horny)
Celia - similar to more common name "Cecelia" so DH wonders if people will see it and automatically call her Cecelia instead
Sylvia/Silvia - does it sound too close to saliva? (i.e., teasing again)

I know it's probably impossible to pick a name that is completely immune to teasing and/or mispronouncing, but we're trying to do a little advance troubleshooting.  So I guess my question is, how likely do people think it is that any of these concerns would actually be a problem?  Has anyone ever heard of a Miranda getting the nickname Randi, or a Sylvia being teased as Sylvia Saliva?

In elementary school, there was a really annoying girl named Sylvia and we all called her saliva. Kids are mean. But I don't think they would come up with randy for Miranda.
  • I am set on Vesper Ainsley for a girl and Rory Quentin for a boy. DH is extremely picky and I want something a little less common. So we will have to wait and see.

just kidding I saw your Fffc on j16 so I had to come see what your baby name ideas were ;)
  • Just do Koen with a K. Maybe it's because I'm Dutch, I don't find it weird at all. I rather like it actually.

Do you have someone in your family named Vesper? When I saw Vesper, I automatically thought of vespers which is a church service. Also, vesper is a drink as in vesper martini.

I thought that too, so I looked it up and apparently it's Greek for evening. It's definitely out of the box but not the worst I've seen.

Yea it's definitely not the worst I've seen, and I don't want anyone to feel bad for their name choices. I just can't get past thinking of going to vespers as a teenager...

  • We are having a hard time picking a name! Our daughter is Nora Grace Vale. We had a miscarriage later on in our pregnancy last time and he was named Micah Jude Vale. This time we have no ideas for a girl or a boy! If anyone can think of any older different names that actually sound nice with Vale, ppppplease let me know!
  • Thanks for your thoughts. No one we know is named Vesper. I just read it on a list (then remembered James Bond) and liked it. I appreciate your help!
  • Being a teacher and naming a child is so hard! Being a special education teacher makes it a little harder cause most of my kids (students) cuss me out, throw chairs, etc. I do really love my job though!

Girl: Annabelle Grace, but we'll call her Annie.
Boy:?!?! We've got nothing. I like Hudson, but DH isn't having it.
  • I'm sure people won't believe me as the pregnancy continues, but I really feel like this baby won't have a name until he/she is born. They will get frustrated at not knowing our name choices. They seem to think we already have names set, but we are totally clueless.
