Re: Favorite Names Thread

  • @k2k2tog a lot of people have told me that, but I feel like it's inevitable at some point. But I guess by then it won't be my issue lol.

@megsb615 Colin is literally the only name I've just LOVED. He is so a Colin too. I actually posted his picture on one of those "guess my name" threads and sometim guessed Collin. We haven't really thrown around boy names, but we did like Troy at one point and my friend told me she told her mom what his full name would be and her mom couldn't stop laughing. I can't really explain why without saying my last name 😂 but it was totally warranted.

I also totally get the adult thing. I am really big about picking names that will grow well. Even knowing my grandmother was a Madelyn, I can't really see it into adulthood. I can see Claire from baby to old lady though.

  • Oh @megsb615 I LOVE Holden, but I just can't with our last name. It sounds like you're holding a bunch of men with that name 😂
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds 😂😂 That’s hilarious! I’m not so sure it flows very well with our last name either, but I’m still kind of liking it. Husband would veto it, I’m sure. Oh, I think Madelyn would go fine into adulthood!
  • Do you guys ever Google your baby names to see what the people with that name look like? 😂 Sometimes if I see too many mug shots it can have a bit of an impact on my choice lol.
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds No, but I will now 😂

@eatinwatermelonseeds That is going to be my next method for narrowing down our list!

Edited to add: Also started looking them up on Urban Dictionary, good for a laugh if nothing else.

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds I suggested Madeline to DH for DD, and his response was, "After a French orphan?!?" with a raised eyebrow. It made me laugh, but struck it off the list.
  • @liliumstargazer13 😂😂 I don't think I could do Madeline for that same reason. There was a girl in my last group who did, and it's super fitting
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds Claire is a beautiful name. Totally one of my top girl names!

  • @secicc12 it's gorgeous, isn't it?! I can just picture her some days. Colin and Claire just sounds so sweet. But my friend's kids are (not full names) Co, Cam, Con. So it'd be Co, Cam, Con, Col, Cla. Even THEY confuse each other's names 😂 but I mean, what's one more? 🤷😂
  • ^^I should add, we pronounce it "Madelyn" I just preferred that spelling.

  • Being a red head, I love(d) the Madeleine books (and was there a tv show or movie?). @mcewen3 That is such a cute costume! I'm mentally noting that for DD since a red head.

I forget if I mentioned this already but I have red hair and DH has brown hair. Since DD is a red head, we know we're either having a red head or a brunette so we'll pick out 4 names potentially (since we're team green): red-headed girl, brunette girl, red-headed boy, brunette boy.

  • @kvh22  there was a TV series too, I'm not sure about a movie.  If there was, I didn't see it.  I feel like I watched it on the same network as Tintin back in the day.  I distinctly remember reading the books, a lot, and I was so surprised when my dad had no clue who Madeline was.  Once I read the opening paragraph he recognized it.

@kvh22 I love that you’re going to have different names depending on the hair color. That would never work for me. I tend to make bald babies 😂
  • If anyone has any thoughts about this name, I'd love them:  DD is named Isla (EYE-luh), Scottish for "island."  I really love the name Morgan for DS, meaning "by the sea" in Welsh.  I thought they went well together.  Anyone have opinions on that?

  • @Sketner610 Very true! We knew DD had red hair before we knew she was a girl (my OB was sooooo excited for a red headed baby lol). I actually am not a fan of red headed boys but DD gets so much attention I'd really like another red-headed girl or a brunette boy but obviously I have zero control over that  :D Our neighbors have a daughter 2 weeks older than DD who still has barely any hair at 15 months yet their oldest (whose 3) was born with tons of hair so maybe this plan won't work out for us.

@mrsdee15 I love Isla! And Morgan! It's nice that they're Scottish and Welsh but I didn't know Morgan was Welsh and it's kind of popular (DD is Olivia so much more popular, no judgement on that). The only thing a little off to me is that Isla is so unique and Morgan is not. But if I met you after you'd named them that, I probably wouldn't think anything of it.

  • @kvh22 Thank you!  And I totally hear what you're saying - our (well, my... DH hasn't really been responding to my ideas, grumble) list for boy names feels like it's a mile long right now, and some are popular and some are less common.  I was thinking the same thing as you in terms of more unusual names.  People have a hard time pronouncing Isla, so I was just hoping to avoid that again.  We get a lot of Elsa and Ilsa.

  • I'm really hoping for a redheaded little girl.  My DH was really red as a kid, though his hair has darkened to auburn as a teen and now he almost looks brown.  DD is blond (but starting to darken at age 10), and my boys are both brunettes like me.  I do have some red on my side of the family, so fx I finally get my redhead!
---as a side note, I still remember an UO thread on my last bmb where some girl said redheads creeped her out.  She was brutally and deservingly flamed.  Redheads are the cutest!
  • @fatmonica Redheads are SO CUTE!  I used to dye my hair red, and loved it, but it was just too much upkeep.

    DD1 is a redhead and it’s pretty awesome. It’s a special club.

@kvh22 DD1 loved Fancy Nancy when she was younger because she’s had red hair like her. She dressed up like her for Halloween.

Eta: thinking about it, we also did Little Mermaid as a costume one year because of her having red hair as well.
    Ivy: July 2010  |  Stella: Dec 2012  |  BFP#3: MMC at 11Wk's, July 2017 | Wyatt: April 2019 | BFP#5: Twin Girls due Sept 2020

  • DH is a red head. Both DDs have very light brown hair. I have red hair on my side of the family, so we keep hoping we'll get a red headed child. I was actually just having this convo with my student's mom who is due three days after me (she and both kids have red hair). When I was pregnant with DD1, DH dreamed of a red headed boy...maybe he was dreaming prematurely 🤣

Thank you for this! This is one of my favorite names and I perfer that spelling and pronunciation too.
  • Oddly enough, we were not aware of any red hair on DH's side. Apparently DH's dad's uncle had a red beard which we found out after DD was born. My fair skin, red hair, and freckled self had given up hope over a decade ago of ever having a child look like me with DH's dark Italian features but here we are :) I guess I shouldn't have ruled it out as my mom is a brunette and she had a blonde and 2 red heads but her aunt was a red head so it didn't come from no where.

@imrachellea FX this one is your red head  ;)

  • For some reason I've gotten the name Arthur Joel in my head and I'm in love. And I know the second I tell my husband has going to crush my dreams of my little baby Arthur. 😭😂
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds Ooh Arthur Joel is really cute! Tell husband not to be a dream crusher! I still have made no progress on boy names 🤦🏼‍♀️
  • I really think this baby is probably another girl, but I just suggested Logan for a boy to DH tonight and he was so grumpy about it. I love Logan but DH is being bratty because there aren't really nicknames for Logan, and he said I only like it because of Wolverine. [eyeroll emoji here] Our DD is Elizabeth and there are at least 15 legit/recognized nns for her name, so I think that's why he's being annoying. I kind of have my heart set on Logan James now. Ugh!!

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds Arthur is on our short list. It means Bear and DH said he would use that as his nickname.

  • @poshspice we tend to have the opposite problem as we don't particularly care for nicknames. Our son's name has no nicknames. Arthur does, but I feel like it'll be easier to keep his just Arthur vs Art or Arty or whatever.
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds I love Arthur, but it's unusable for us because DH has an estranged uncle by that name. I knew an Arthur in HS and people always just called him Arthur, no nicknames.

  • FFFC? I actually like the name Bear as a legit first name...though I'd never be able to convince DH and it's more "like" than "love".

  • @imrachellea I think my uo is that I hate those types of names. My friend named her son Fox and I'm just like... Oh honey no. But I mean, to each their own. And he's seriously the cutest baby I've ever seen, so I guess it works for him lol.
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds I also don’t like those type of names. I used to work in a family practice and in recent years there were some pretty ridiculous baby names (there was definitely a Fox or 2).

  • @poshspice Logan James was a name I’ve been pushing for too lol
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds @MelissaMay82 I hear you both. DH's female cousins seem to be having an originality contest right now. Recent baby names in the family include (not nicknames): Cricket, Clover, Wick, Shepherd, Alvi-Bear, Chet, etc. While I want everyone to love and be happy of their baby's names, I do feel that these LOs might have some serious teasing ahead in life. I also really want my child to feel attached and proud of their name and having a really out there name might challenge that ?
  • @Sketner610 James is a family name on both sides for us so I feel like that's a winner and I just love Logan!!

@eatinwatermelonseeds I feel like there's nothing wrong with not having nicknames. My first name has a shortened version that my mother always hated so I never really had any nicknames. I don't feel like I missed out.

  • @poshspice my husband and I both have names that can't really be nice names. I still got called one at times but my husband's really has nothing. Our son doesn't really either. We wanted to continue that, but he vetoed Dean. So, Artie it is 😂
