If anyone has a Just Between Friends sale coming up in their area, they can be a treasure trove for maternity clothes. I went to one a couple of weeks ago, and the maternity selection was fantastic. Tons of new or barely worn clothes that most people had marked for around $5. I know they can be hit or miss depending on your area though.
Oh! Good to know. We have one in Ann Arbor next weekend. If any Metro-Detroit ladies are going, let me know. Maybe we can meet up!
@linssears4 love H&M maternity!!! At least 50% of my maternity stuff is from there. Our local store doesn’t carry it anymore but you can order and return to the store if need be.
I stopped at the Motherhood Maternity outlet store this morning. I was pleasantly surprised that several things fit me and looked good. I’m normally a size 16/18/20 (I have trouble finding stuff that fits across my chest).
I found two dresses that are suitable for work and a memorial service I have to attend next weekend and some jeans and dress pants.
Also, I had to pick this up for myself... I’ll probably wait until after Blast is here to actually wear it out, but hey...
Ugh. I had to go last minute maternity clothes shopping for an interview I have tomorrow. Target and Kohls both severely let me down. I wish I had read through this thread with more time before the interview. I found something that will work, but I was astonished how crappy their selections were!!!
I was just given a bag of maternity clothes from a friend, but I'm unable to use most of it (it's too big). There are a few pieces in my size, and it's quite possible I'll fit in the rest better later in pregnancy. But I still need to buy a few t-shirts for right now. So, I guess a shopping trip is in order!
Just realized there's a Motherhood at the mall near work, planning on heading over there on Thursday. I want to go to the outlet a few hours north of us, but I'll have to find time.
Oh and if anyone doesn't want to get maternity clothes yet, I have a pair of jeans that are 2 sizes too big for me and they fit great. They also work really well for postpartum when I still have the pouch.
For a nice dress I actually got it from Macy's online. The online is the sucky part, but WAY cheaper than anything else I found. It was for a bit bigger than I was at the time, but was a good deal and shipped fast. Not their fault I didn't pop.
I may have to breakdown and try motherhood. I have a couple pants from lat time, but I hate them. I had to wear a Bella band on top of them to hold them up all the time. It was also fall/winter so I'll need shorts/capris or something.
I just got some shorts from Kohl’s. They’re pretty comfortable. My other kids were spring and winter babies so I didn’t need summer maternity clothing. I have a few shirts but will probably look for a few more. I usually get those at Target. But since summer is coming and I won’t be working during that time, I won’t need much until August. I’ll probably get capris and maybe another pair of shorts. I think I mostly wore empire waist dresses that I already had with E during the beginning of that school year. Luckily, I don’t have to dress up everyday so jeans and shirts will be fine until I’m done with work this school year and for the beginning of the next school year.
FYI I just saw an ad on my FB for motherhood maternity.. having a 50% off sale May 2nd and 3rd online. Not sure if this was just specific to my FB cuz you know how FB is creepy and knows what you’ve been thinking... but I’ll definitely be checking it out!!
I have some of their stuff and it is nice. Not super high quality but pretty nice. I want to say their stuff runs small. Check retailmenot.com for codes to save more. Not sure if it can be stacked with the sale though.
I remember there being a few other NYC people on this thread in the beginning. If you are still here, have any of you been to Jane’s Exchange or Clementines Consignment? Both are supposed to be great baby/maternity thrift stores.
I just placed two orders in the last two days for maternity stuff online from pink blush and old navy! Fingers crossed that I actually like some of it!
I’m at the point right now where I stand in my closet for like 10 minutes trying to find something comfortable to wear in the morning, because although I have all my maternity stuff from the first time around, I really hate all but one pair of my work appropriate pants (the ones from motherhood all feel really cheap and poorly made, and don’t fit me well). I have tons of maternity jeans that I like, but I can’t get away with wearing those at work other than on fridays, which is unfortunate.
@kfrob I’m a fan of the sticky bras from gap instead of strapless. not sure how they hold up at larger sizes, but the level of stick seems pretty impressive!
@kfrob granted, I have small boobs but I a Hanes one from Kmart like 5 years ago and it's AMAZING! Doesn't budge at all. And this is after trying so many different VS ones that just sucked.
@sliztee I know! eek! I have a sundress I want to wear this weekend and I can't wear a regular bra with it. I also have a wedding to go to in a month and need one for that dress. I just don't want to drop a boat load of money for something I might wear a few times.
@pumpkinpancake I’m in the same boat. I bought maternity pants last weekend and love them but I didn’t get any tops because I thought I had enough. However, I realized this week that I have only about 6 of them that are work appropriate that still fit and are long enough to cover the maternity panel...ugh! I think I remember you mentioned in a different thread that you are short (sorry if I’m wrong) but if you are you will have to let me know how the pink blush stuff works out for you! I’ve been debating ordering some things, but I’m only 5ft and short waisted so I usually like to try clothes on before buying them. But it looks like the best finds for maternity are online so I will probably have to bite the bullet sometime and just order a few things.
Could those of you who are experienced with ordering maternity clothes online let me know which places are easy for in store returns? I think I saw on old navy or gap something said it couldn’t be returned in store which deterred me.
@estellegetty I haven’t been able to get to Jane’s Exchange because they close at 6 most days! I did go to Clementines though! They have cuter stuff for babies than moms, and most of their stuff is higher priced than I want to pay for consignment, but they did have a $10 bin where I found a nice pair of work pants from A pea in the pod.
@rabtaido1214 Well shit. I thought LOFT would, but nope, they don't. I just checked online because I ordered a bunch of pants from them in my quest to find maternity pants for someone with an ass and thunder thighs. (It's been a long, $1000+ journey, filled with a lot of angry tears, rants to DH, and pending returns). Guess I'll be forking over another $7 to return things.
Nordstrom definitely allows in store returns, not sure if that's in your price range though. But they also have free online returns, so I never both going into the store. Since I've had such poor luck finding pants under $60, I said "f*ck it, I just want to be comfortable" and started looking at pricier options. I just ordered some clothes from Ingrid & Isabel and Seraphine, and both have free (online) returns as well. Since Seraphine is a UK company, you have to pay like $6 in shipping, but the returns are free if you live in the lower 48.
If anyone has suggestions on where to find maternity pants for curvy women that aren't really plus size (I wear a 10-my waist pre-preg was a 6/8), I'm all ears. Also, open to plus size options (except Motherhood, wasn't impressed with the quality or feel of their pants...so scratchy!), and may get my tailor involved if the stomach/waist ends up too baggy (is that even a thing with maternity pants?). On that note/rant, is it even possible to just get my tailor to alter a pair of non-maternity jeans and make them maternity? Kut from the Kloth has the most awesome fitting high waisted jeans for pear-shapes and would love to just buy a pair and then Frankenstein a solution with a Bella Band or something (sorry, I'm sure I reek of desperation in this post lol)
@rc-cola good to know about Clementine’s. When I looked up Jane’s it said it had permenetally closed?!
I dont know where in Brooklyn you are, but my all time favorite mama/Baby shop is there - Wild Was Mama! It’s in Greenpoint on Driggs. Def not cheap, but they run amazing sales. I travel there from the East Village bc it’s such a great shop! They also have an AWESOME drop in breastfeeding support group once a month if you’re planning to try BFing out. I went once or twice in the beginning with my daughter and it was SUPER helpful.
I’m going to have to make a trip there again soon once I go through all of or newborn stuff and figure out what’s I’m missing etc. they have a big baby carrier selection too. Great spot!
For plus size pregnant peoples, I thought finding maternity clothes would be easy and was disappointed when nothing in the maternity section fit my body. What I ended up doing was finding a pair of maternity pants that fit, specifically pants with a belly band, and then searching the plus size sections for tops.
I ended up finding quite a few great tops and dresses that fit comfortably and will grow well with my body / belly this way. The brands I found that fit the best and had good items for maternity were Time and Tru at Walmart and Ava and Viv at Target.

@spartan4life haha I am the one who mentioned being short! My pink blush order came this week, and I’m keeping 3 of the 4 things I ordered. I had ordered 3 dresses and 1 top, and I’m returning one of the dresses because I didn’t love how it looked, but the others were keepers. I went with knee length dresses, and they were a fine length even for a short person. I wanted to try some of the maxis, but knew they wouldn’t work for me.
@pumpkinpancake yeah, the maxis fit me pretty well lengthwise, all I need is a short 1/2"-1" heel. I'm just about 5'8"
I love how their knee length dresses are actually to the knee! I always have issues with dresses going too short in the back and not being work appropriate.
@mytrueloves I agree both of those brands are the only ones I've found that fit nice now and will accommodate a growing bump! And are decently priced! Pants I've had no luck with though, other than regular leggings.
@jemmerjams I think you absolutely can make a maxi dress business casual depending on your office’s culture and implementation of business casual. I agree with @mamabearcj about a cardigan. I’ve also seen cute looks like a kimono style top open over it. My boss just wore a maxi dress to work on a normal business day and it seemed totally appropriate. I’m not completely sure how our use of business casual may compare to others, but I think it was super cute and not unprofessional at all.
@nmadjeski I'm weirdly shaped so I have really skinny legs and a really big waist and belly. So maternity jeans actually ended up being the solution for me. With regular pants I wear a 20 / 22, but in maternity pants I wear a size 14 with a little room
