Maternity Clothes

Where do you buy them? I see so many places online, but I worry about the quality. I don't need it to last a lifetime, but I would prefer brands where you can't see through the shirts because they are so thinly woven or pants that wont fall apart after a few washes.

So, STM+, where do you guys buy maternity clothes?

  • I got some good stuff at Sears, they have A brand by Motherhood. Kohl’s also had some stuff. I got my best quality stuff from Motherhood, but it was pricey. I got terrible quality stuff from Ross. I’ve also heard good things about Old Navy, but mine didn’t have maternity.

I didnt try buying online because stuff never fits right so I like to try it on.

  • H and M has adorable stuff, Pink Blush has some cute things online, Old Navy is great for summer stuff especially, and Pea in the Pod has higher end stuff for work or social events.

I bought almost everything from Gap, Old Navy, and H&M.  I have a few pieces mixed in from Target and Motherhood.  My Gap full panel jeans are THE BEST and holding up great after 9 months of wear.  I’m excited to wear them again.  The panel is still really snug.  My Old Navy jeans didn’t hold up as well, the panel got stretched out.

Eta: almost all the brands I like are only online now :( but I don’t have a problem ordering two sizes, trying it on, and sending back what I don’t like.
  • Gordman’s carries Motherhood Maternity brand at a lower price, obviously not as big of selection but still had quite a few options. I also liked Target and Old Navy. ON had the best, cheapest work pants IMO.

Most of my tops are from Old Navy. I did a Zulily order with some random stuff. I like a Pink Blush but it’s pricier. Pants...ugg. It’s hard. I’m not a fan of the full panel. Had jeans from Motherhood. Shorts from Target.

ETA: I used the hair tie trick on my regular jeans for 4-5 months. A Bella band here and there. And a lot of shirts and be worn for while as long as they aren’t super form fitting and are long. Honestly, I didn’t start primarily wearing maternity clothes until ~7 months. We’ll see if that holds true the second time around.
  • Motherhood, Target, and Pink Blush.
  • Old Navy and Target! Motherhood Maternity has great quality but is definitely pricey.

  • I might be bougie, but last time I bought two pairs of dress pants from j crew. ( i work in an office and need to dress up) They were expensive, but those two pairs of pants lasted me up until my very last day, so if price per wear means anything, so worth it.  I will be busting them out again (sooner than planned) for this pregnancy
  • I have only ever bought maternity things from Target. I also just bought basic tank tops from H&M in a size up that I loved with DD. Personally I don't wear maternity shirts until the very end because normal shirts work fine. Most of my maternity clothes are borrowed or second hand. I think with DD I only bought a good pair of jeans and a couple dresses. The rest I borrowed from my sister.
  • This may sound like a dumb question, but how does sizing in maternity wear work?  Am I going to be buying 2-3 different sizes as the bump grows?
  • This may sound like a dumb question, but how does sizing in maternity wear work?  Am I going to be buying 2-3 different sizes as the bump grows?
I didn't really need to buy bigger sizes as I grew, because for the most part, my legs and boobs stayed about the same size throughout. The room for the bump in the clothes has enough room to accommodate as you get bigger. So you just buy whatever size you usually wear in "normal" clothes... although with new stores, it takes getting used to their sizing, I suppose.
  • Most of the time the maternity is cut bigger in the bust and hips to account for growth.  They usually say to get your pre-pregnancy size.
  • I bought most of mine from Target, Old Navy, and a few pieces from Gap, a Pea in the Pod, Loft, and Boden. My SIL and I are roughly the same size and have passed a box of maternity clothes back and forth for 3 previous pregnancies, so I'm hoping to just buy a few items this time.
  • @knottieamusements You typically just buy in your normal size and it’ll work the whole pregnancy. A little loser in the beginning. Tighter at the end. But most everything is made long and stretchy. I remember my tops just getting shorter and shorter the bigger I got.
  • I really liked gap maternity, especially for work clothes.  I had a lot of old navy and target too.

Motherhood Maternity has good stuff, of course, but I always felt like I got better deals (and things were more my style) at gap/ON/Target.

Pea in the Pod has really nice stuff, but they are expensive.  I did get some things on sale there that I liked.

@jengibre_zorro - I also splurged on a pair of jcrew work pants during my last pregnancy, they were GREAT.

Unfortunately, though, JCrew stopped selling maternity stuff (at least last week when I checked). I am so bummed, I got rid of ALL my maternity stuff because I thought we were done.

  • @lest12 ohhhh noooo!  They were the only place i found pants that fit that didn't have a belly band.  I hate the over the belly items so much, they would just make me itch uncontrollably.    SO bummed now.
  • For quality, pea in the pod. If I just want something cheap and comfy that I don’t care if it lasts, target.

  • Oh STM who are larger already before pregnancy,  what do you do during summer when you are warm but dresses will make your thighs stick together and or rub? Maternity shorts under the dress? Capris under the dress? Skip dresses and wear shorts or Capris?
  • I got a few items from Target the other week.

Has anyone used ThreadUp? It's a resale site, but has quite a bit of maternity clothes. We also have a store called 9Month Bump near us that has specialty baby clothes and maternity consignment.
  • I got maternity in my normal size and it fit the whole time. At 16-17 weeks when I was buying it I remember thinking, my belly will NEVER get this big, but by my due date that very shirt fit the best. I think as long as your weight gain is the normal 35 ish lbs your okay.
  • Ugh I had a love/hate relationship with my maternity clothes during my pregnancy with DS. On the one hand they were comfy, so there’s that, but I could never find anything that actually looked good on me or fit well. I bought most of my stuff from Gap, old navy and the loft, with some stuff from motherhood maternity too (though I was always super disappointed with their stuff for some reason). Maybe I’ll have better luck this time around.
  • Speaking of 2nd hand, my sister grabbed some nice stuff on Poshmark!

Someone mentioned zulilly but I shopped there with caution - shipping could take a while and male sure to check the return policy!

@SweetSweetTooth Ohhh those thighs. I feel ya.
I am not a STM, but my current plan of action is getting pro combat type shorts (workout spandex) in a larger size, or I have this SUPER thin, extremely light, barely restrictive pair of shaping shorts that I may give a go. We'll see if they work with the belly, but they're my go-to for under stresses!

Or you know, I may forget a dress entirely and just wear workout clothes for nine months :)
  • Ugh...thighs i mostly avoid dresses.
  • I bought most of my mat stuff on sale at Destination Maternity last go around. I also lived in maxi dresses and long T-shirt’s with leggings because I didn’t really get “big” until well into my 3rd tri. I have a feeling I’ll be in mat stuff next month from the look of my stomach at 5 weeks though

  • Target mostly and a few things from pink blush.  I got an Awesome nursing robe from them as well!
  • I didn't try Pink Blush last time, but I'm excited to try them and get a few maxi dresses for the summer!
  • @sweetsweettooth For DD I was due in August and I basically lived in shorts and a tank top at home and if I had to go out I wore yoga capris.

This time I have these swim shorts that are longer and very stretchy.  I may try those under a dress if I happen to wear a dress this time.

I am already plus sized and short so finding maternity clothes really sucks.  I got a few things from motherhood maternity, old navy and target last time.
  • I almost cried as I got 2 pairs of maternity jeans and 2 pairs of maternity leggings for $0 and they are new. Got from a bargain store that was closing and I had coupons. Finally comfy plants that look nice! One pair of jeans is a side panel and one is the small band. The small band one keeps rolling from my blump. What do you do to prevent that?

@sweettooth87 That is why I hated bands of all kinds until way at the end. Constantly rolling down and adjusting. I have no solution. It just sucks. I used the side panel whenever possible. But I know others who loves their full panels, so I could just be weird.
  • @tinattt23 that is what I figured. Oh well they are quite comfy and just glad to wear jeans again as I don't do leggings too much and I think family would get suspicious!
  • ::enters cautiously:: I have no idea what side panels and full panels and all of these bands really mean! I have a lot of googling to do!

I’m also worried about finding work appropriate clothing. I work in a business professional environment and wear a suit or dress with blazer every single day. Hopefully some of my blazers will still work but yikes.

I enjoy Zulily, but I'm not sure I'd want to buy clothes off there. Everything I've gotten has been great, but it does take a while to ship sometime and their return policy is very strict.

I'm so thankful my office went to jeans a year ago. I can't imagine dress pants right now.
  • Any suggestions for petite maternity clothes? I can wear regular sizes at H&M so their stuff might be alright but I’m 5’1 103 right now with very straight/narrow hips... I’m afraid regular maternity stuff just won’t fit right (as most women’s bottoms don’t unless their petite)
  • @lolo_0924 I’m 5’0”. Motherhood had jeans in short or petite (whatever they call it) that fit pretty decent. I think they were the Jessica Simpson ones. Other than that, I wore regular yoga pants rolled under the belly and shorts.
  • I got most of mine from Motherhood and some from Target.  I was hoping To reuse my maternity clothes from DD, but she was born in February so it's completely opposite seasons. I'll probably just live in Long tank tops and shorts!
