Re: Randomness Week of 11/11

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds I hope it all works out for you guys. Home buying is so stressful!
    @DuchessOfCambridge congratulations!

@mrskoz428 i think if you have the chance to leave early then go for it. Only if that’s what you want. I only have 21 sick days so I already know I will be unpaid for the rest of the year.  i am jealous of your time. I also don’t get paid over the summer so I won’t take any more time than I have to. As for your students I would make arrangements for the trip in advance and let them know. I would also prepare them for a possibility of you needing to leave before your due date because sometimes that happens. With ds1 I was due Dec 2, but I was placed on bed rest
October 10th. Ds2 I planned to work until my scheduled c section, but went into labor 3 weeks early.

  • @mcewen3 you are my inspiration!

@eatinwatermelonseeds dammit, now i want Coldstone!!

  • @expandcontract I do bedtime routines almost exclusively these days so I felt I deserved it.  DH is coaching the senior hockey team this year so he is gone at least a few nights a week for that.  Because of that, I have become the favoured bedtime person, even on the nights that he's home.  Like, they both will beg for me to put them to bed and flat out refuse him.  So when I was finally off-duty tonight, there was no way I was chancing getting sucked back in for even one kid by coming home early.  Lol.

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds that sounds soo yummy right now!

@mcewen3 I like the way you think 🤣 you definitely  deserve your bedtime routine free evening! I generally do bedtime every night to an it can be exhausting! You enjoy your oreos and show!
  • @DuchessOfCambridge. Congratulations!!!

@thebobloblaw. I’m so happy for your cousins! They sound like they are going to be amazing parents.

@eatinwatermelonseeds Just finished getting caught up on everything going on with the house, glad to hear you might be getting a happy ending to that story.   Home buying is so super crazy stressful,  I hope it works up for you in the end.
  • @mcewen3 Canadian Oreos? Is that these?

    Man I love those things.

Seriously, though, what's the difference between American and Canadian Oreos?

  • @brie_and_almonds I was wondering the same thing!

@thebobloblaw congratulations to your cousin and his wife! That is so great to hear,  and I can't imagine how traumatic it must have been to have their foster child placed back with the biological parents. The trauma that foster kids and parents go through is unbelievable. Best of luck to them!
  • @Stormiewinter at this point I’m only planning on leaving 4 days early (6 if you include the weekend). Plans for the trip will definitely be made, as I don’t want the sub doing it no matter what! I only have 9 days of sick leave right now thanks to a concussion last year and the stomach flu this year. Oh well!

  • @brie_and_almonds @knarlytaurus on my first BMB, way back in 2012/2013 we had a big discussion going about the different Canadian treats that some of the American posters loved and picked up when they crossed the border.  Oreos were one of them.  I guess the ones in Canada are just made with a slightly different recipe and taste different, and in the opinion of most, better.  I even ended up mailing a care package of Canadian snacks down to one of the ladies filled with Oreos, Smarties and ketchup chips.  I did conduct my own taste test later that year when I went to parents place in AZ, and I do agree that Canadian Oreos are superior.

To preemptively answer the question, my understanding of American Smarties are that they are like what we call Rockets.  Powdery, sugary candy that comes in a twisted plastic wrapper.  We get them at Halloween a lot.  Our Smarties are a chocolate in a hard candy coating, kind of like an M & M, but taste quite different.

  • We have our first snow day today, but it's actually an ice day. And it isn't even bad AT ALL. But instead of getting to snuggle at home with my kids and enjoy it, I'm at work that *doesn't* close, but instead hosts all the school age kids who's parents went to work. And we have over 100 school age kid who could end up showing up 😮 I have zero game plan on what to do all day with them because it happened so suddenly, and my plan today was for a 2.5 hour preschool class window. At the moment I have them watching a movie on Netflix, but we can't watch them all day. Plus I'm not taking a lunch today because I'm leaving 45 mins early for my NT scan. It's going to be a LONG day.

  • @mcewen3 I had no idea our oreos are different!!! I wonder why?

  • @k2k2tog our Oreos are made by Christie vs Nabisco in the U.S.  The ingredients are slightly different too, using a different oil, no high fructose corn syrup in the Canadian ones, etc.  It’s a mixed bag to what people prefer, and I do remember the ladies who loved the Canadian Oreos were mostly women who had spent time in Canada as a kid, or lived here for some period of time as an adult.  One woman grew up in the Buffalo area and her family’s cottage was just across the border on the Canadian side of Lake Erie, so she had years of experience sampling the flavours on both sides.

  • @thebobloblaw Aw that’s so amazing for your cousin and his wife! With all of the sad and bad in the world, it’s so refreshing to hear such great and happy news for deserving people! Warms my heart. ❤️
  • @mcewen3 I wonder if it's English influence! I have seen Smarties in England and they are M&M-esque, like you described.

  • @DuchessOfCambridge I googled and I think you’re right.  According to Wikipedia they were originally produced by a UK company, but are currently made by Nestle.  They aren’t sold in the States because the rights to the name belong to the Smarties candy that Americans would be familiar with.

  • @mcewen3 my last group only had a few Canadians, but we had girls from the UK and Australia as well, and we just all had a blast one day figuring out what different foods were like spotted dick. The girls in the uk were mortified I was having biscuits and gravy because they thought I was putting gravy on my cookies 😂 it was fun. We actually did a box exchange with girls from different countries so they could try new things or things they haven't been able to have in a while. I didn't participate because I was poor and am unimaginative lol but I heard it was fun.
Is this a typo? What's "spotted dick?"
    So confused.

  • Spotted Dick is like a type of pudding I think?

  • Omg 😂 😂 I'm dying. "Sorry it's huge." But yeah, no that wasn't a typo 😂 that was a FUN post. It was from forever ago, I wonder if I can find it and see what else. 🤔
  • Okay so I can't find the original post (thanks for nothing Facebook 😒) but I did find this 😂 the OP is from the US and tagged the girl in the first comment (UK) and said "my brother found this, how do you eat this stuff?!" And I love her answer 😂

@expandcontract haha it's a British sponge cake in a can

  • Omg my husband is driving me crazy with this house buying shit. We have finally gotten the sellers to pay $3000 for the repairs, but there's mold in the Attic that was said by their repair guy to not actually be mold but two other guys said it is and one quoted $1400 to fix it, but he said he won't fix it until the cause of the mold is fixed, so they got a quote for the cause which brought the total of the other repairs to that $3000 almost even. But now my husband is wanting to know why they won't pay the $1400 for the mold. 🙄 Dude. Now he's just being picky af.

Okay now I'm bitching about my dog 😂 she's being petty Betty right now. I needed to bathe her before I went to take her to the vet for a nail trim. She hid under my bed for 30 minutes, then took a bath, hid again, I walked with her into the downstairs bathroom to blow dry her and she went and hid. Went to her appointment and I had to carry her fat little butt in because she would not budge. I just got home again and I bought her a collar, she took off running and has been hiding under the bed since 😒

You would think I tried to drown her, blow fire at her, and then rip her nails off. I pampered her!
  • I have now been in hold with my auto repair place for over 10 minutes. I need 4 new tires and an oil change, but fine, don’t take my $400. You clearly don’t want it.

  • I really want to complain about the air quality here - we've had to be inside basically since they started and DD can't go outside at all which is her favorite at daycare and on the weekends - but don't think I'm a bad person as I know it's way worse near the fires and this is the deadliest fire in CA history with almost 300 people missing, as well. This is just so frustrating. It's supposed to rain finally on Thanksgiving which will bring much better air quality but it looks like it'll rain through Sunday so DD still won't be able to go to the park or play outside for another week and a half!

  • @kvh22 I really hope you guys get some good rain soon! My brother lives in San Jose and has been wearing a mask to/from work the air quality is so awful. I'm in Oregon and we had a horrible summer here with fires; I'll take rain over smoke any day. I hope no one here has had their homes/families directly impacted by these awful fires.

  • I'm going to sound insane, but I was feeling baby flutter, so I pushed kind of deep into my lower abdomen and felt tiny taps on my finger tips. Either I'm feeling the baby, or I have really bad/weird gas 😂

@DuchessOfCambridge I am laughing my ass off because when I opened this thread all i saw was your post "spotted dick ( sorry its huge)" and NO picture!!!  It took a few seconds for the picture to load and during that time I was furiously trying to back out of the thread thinking you posted a nasty picture, and then i was also thinking "WTF would Duchess do something like that?! That's so not like her!"
    Thanks for the laughs,  girl!

  • @misskimsue oh we're super close to your brother, then. It's been so bad here but I'm thankful there's an end in sight.

  • I really feel for all the Californians. I lived there for a year a few years ago.  I found out the house I used to rent a room from,  the fire came very close to them. My (now) friend whose parents own the place sent a picture of the thick smoke in her backyard creeping into the front yard.  I FOR SURE would not have survived that with my asthma.

  • @kvh22 I hope you guys get some relief soon!  We spend every summer in the Okanagan area (British Columbia interior).  There are always forest fires due to it being so hot and dry so it’s hit or miss if our weeks there will be smoky.  We’ve had smoke several years but nothing like this past summer.  The day I drove out was the day the winds shifted and smoke filled the lake where we vacation.  It just got worse and worse each day and reached record levels the Okanagan hasn’t seen in over 50 years.  We got so bored of indoor activities, especially when it was the middle of summer and we had a lake as our backyard.  I imagine you guys are dealing with similar air quality levels, maybe worse, and I can totally commiserate.  I definitely don’t think it makes you a bad person to complain about the air quality, it doesn’t diminish the suffering of others just points out that everyone is affected even if you haven’t lost property or a loved one.
