Re: Favorite Names Thread

  • I've been pretty set on Titus Nathaniel (MN is DH's name) since we had one of each picked out 5 years ago for our first, but now I'm second guessing it. I like it, but I'm not 100% sure it's THE name (if this is a boy) anymore. I also like Samuel but that doesn't go with the middle, and I like Eli but a friend of mine lost her 1 week old son from a CHD and that was his name. So I'm not sure. I feel like Titus will stick if it's a boy, but DH is kind of so-so about it.

For a girl we both like Juliet, nickname Juls, but both DDs have an "a" at the end and I may stick with that. I love Anastasia, but DH doesn't, and not the 50 Shades reference (never read it nor care to).

So basically...we're still got 34 weeks to figure it out 🤷

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds what is your son's name? Just out of curiosity!
  • @imrachellea what about Juliana?  Still "Jules" but keeps with your theme of an 'a' at the end.

That could work! And a little less "star crossed lovers" 🤣 My gut is saying boy, but I've been wrong before! DH won't even talk about names yet, because he's still coming to grips with adding another kid to this chaos (despite this baby being planned)

  • @imrachellea My mom has always been obsessed with the name Juliet. She wanted to name my brother that if he was a girl and talks about the name A LOT and how sad she is she never got to name anyone that. I do think it's a nice name but we have too many J names in my family as it is! I ruled out all names starting with J.
  • @RoseShadow873 They pretty much all have a Duggar connotation at this point anyway 🤣

  • @youknowmenaomi his name is Colin Randall. Randall is my father in law's middle name. But I've just always loved Colin and it fits him so well.

I REALLY want Claire, but my husband really doesn't want to do any letter trends (he and his 5 siblings are all J's and so am I). My best friend has 3 kids with C's, then my Colin, and adding a 5th would be a mess. But it's my favorite by far.
  • @missy052819 I love Olivia. Love your boy name too. My dad’s name is also Robert, and I’d like to use it for a middle name, but I’m finding it hard to find first names to go with it.
  • @missy052819 DD is Olivia with a one syllable middle name. The plan was to call her Liv, which we do sometimes, but it's just so pretty we call her by her full name more than I thought we would.

What sorts of names do you like? Classic? Old fashioned? Trendy?
James, Owen, Edwin, Theodore all sound nice followed by Robert but idk if they’re your style. :)
  • We had the hardest time coming up with a name for DS. It ended up being a name I loved before we even got pregnant and the only name we could both agree on. So far we like Jillian, Evelyn and Kennedy for a girl with Leigh and/or Noel (family names) for the middle name. For a boy we like Sawyer, Cohen and Connor for a boy with James (family name again) for the middle name.
  • @kvh22 the same thing happened with DS we named him something that has a few super easy/common nicknames and thought we would call him by one of those but we NEVER do. We always use his full name.
  • @secicc12 sorry for the late reply, but I think your names are beautiful and that you obviously do a better job than me at finding names that are familiar and easy to pronounce in both languages. For both of my kids, I wanted to do the same but ended up choosing names that were significant to me but might seem weird in either France or the US. DS1 we named Brendan, after my grandfather, which is easy enough for Americans (although often confused with Brandon), but not very familiar for French people. DS2 we named Antonin, after the Place Antonin Poncet in Lyon, which is where we first met. This isn't really a popular name in France, but neither is it weird, and it's always pronounced correctly. In the US, though, it's definitely viewed as weird. Oh well! I'm not sure if we will go with a French name this time or not, but I have thought of Genevieve for a girl. I have not brought this up to my husband because, to this date, we have NEVER agreed on a girl name. Maybe we'll have another boy, haha.

I think it's interesting you thought of Theodore and Luca because my friend (American) who is married to my cousin-in-law (French) has a son named Theodore and my (French) nephew is named Lucas. You must be on to something!

  • @stringofhearts Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll need all the help I can get! 😂 I love James, but it’s my husband’s name, and DS’s first name. He goes by his middle name though. Owen is also really cute. I’m not sure what my style would be. Probably mostly classic/traditional. I would love for both to be family names, but that seems pretty difficult to do with Robert for the middle name.
  • @sleepy33 Something to keep in mind! I like Maui because we went to the island for a babymoon with #1. There was a guy selling handcarved necklaces, and I bought my husband the Maui hook after the guy explained the meaning. Apparently Maui pulled the Hawaiian islands from the ocean with his hook, so it's symbolic of working hard for what you want. This describes my husband perfectly. We just watched Moana a couple of days ago, and I wasn't too crazy about Maui's portrayal.
  • @misskimsue That’s too funny! I love that your kid’s names have meaning. They’ll appreciate that when they’re older. Genevieve is soo pretty. You can’t go wrong there. It’s the worst when your husband doesn’t like the name that you love. Can’t they just agree??  :D

  • My husband's family has a father-son naming tradition. My DH is Thomas Johnson (insert last name) the X. He goes by John since his Dad goes by Tom. If we have a boy we will name him Thomas Johnson XI but call him Jack for short.

If it's a girl...Lord help! It took us 1 month to name our female dog. 😂 Some names I love: Mary Patricia (for my Mom and Grandmaman), Geneviève, Caroline, Abigail. Celeste, Brielle and Louisa are also on my list. DH hasn't said much about girl names yet so who knows what it will be!

  • @k2k2tog Alina means noble and fair. Starts with an A
  • @k2k2tog

I was really inspired by story!!!! I found this graphic and website about the “translations” of the name Aaltje into different languages.  You know, how Guillermo and William are the same name or Juan, Jean and John.

Alice and Adelaide are some of the variations. Alina is sometimes listed as a variant of Adelaide.  Good luck!!

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds Me! We don’t have a single boy name we’re even somewhat considering. I love my girl name, but still not sold on using it bc of another friend having it. Also not sure if I love Caroline enough for a first name. It’s a good thing we’ve got a while bc it looks like it’s going to take some time. 😬
  • @RoseShadow873 Hermione! After HP, right? I love that name. Is your partner on board? DH gave it a pass last time.
  • @msb615 I'm glad I'm not the only one. For our son we had a girl and boy name picked before he was even born. I cannot find a single boy name I like this time.

We had Claire and Madelyn picked for girls last time, but DH vetoed Claire and I'm not crazy about Madelyn. Now he likes Haley but I'm not sold on it either. I still want Claire, but even that I'm not entirely excited about.
  • @guitarra1614 It's originally a Greek name, and a Shakespeare character as well. But I do love Hermione from HP so that is such a bonus for sure! :) My husband likes it too and our son has a Greek name as well. It's a top contender for us now but not 100%. Also we don't know if we are having a girl. If it's a boy I have no idea for names!
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds Madelyn and Claire are both pretty, and I even like how Madelyn Claire sounds together! At least your husband actually contributes to names. I’m not sure mine has even thought about any, but I guess I should be thankful he’s not hell bent on something I don’t like.
  • @msb615 my husband has only said he likes Haley and brace yourself--- Buck. So, it's not all good having your husband contribute 😂
  • And 99% of the time he's just saying no to every name I suggest. I am at the point I may just name the baby No.
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds Oh wow haha Buck is.. an interesting choice 🤭 Same here.. we’ve joked that we’re just going to have a “little baby no name” at the rate we’re going.
  • @msb615 it's funny because when I was pregnant with my son, he was gunning for Buck and I actually met a guy in a class I was taking named Buck. He said he liked his name, but as soon as I told him our last name he said "please don't do that to your kid" 😂😂
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds That’s too funny! It would be terrible with our last name too.

I'm actually a little worried that this name is heavily on the rise! It's not that popular right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it became popular in the next few years. I've got plenty of others on my mind, too, but I'm hiding them all from my husband until we find out the sex of the baby... not even worth it to go there until I know I have to!

  • @msb615My husband really liked Emma but I wanted something a little more fancy southern-ish sounding so we went with Emmeline (emma-lean). It makes it a little less top 10. I've also noticed it spelled Emaline or Emmaline.

If we have a boy, I really like Hudson, Dylan, Liam, or Noah. For a girl, ehhh I don't know. Maybe Willow, Quinn, or Harper.

  • @secicc12 @bgdwg I did not take my own advice. Bolstered by your encouragement, I told my husband about Genevieve and he said over his dead body. He literally said, only if I die before you give birth. 🤦‍♀️

  • @misskimsue I think I missed what your French connection is but I love French names.  I was in French immersion growing up and always had dreams of living in France one day.  A couple on my list that I think work in North America too are: Simone and Émilie.  Theresa is my mom’s middle name and I love the nickname Tess, so that’s also on our list which could easily be switched to the French Therèse.  My grade 3/4 teacher named her two daughters Odelle and Béatrice (nickname Béa, pronounced Bay-Ah not Bee like the NA nickname) and I always liked those too

  • @misskimsue Genevieve is definitely riding a zenith right now. I'd say it has been steadily rising for at least the last five years.

I just checked the data, and Genevieve has been steadily rising since the early 90s. It's currently number 180-something in popularity in the US, but number 28 in popularity on Nameberry (naming website), which to me indicates that it will probably keep rising massively for a while.
