Re: Randoms 6/1

  • There is definitely a huge difference between teasing and bullying. In the end getting teased makes you stronger. It drives me nuts when parents say their kid is being bullied and it’s just normal kid teasing...maybe that’s an UO.

  • FFMC? I cringe anytime I see a unique spelling of a name. I actually have an uncommonly spelled name and I hate it. I considered changing it legally to the normal spelling when I changed my last name, but it seemed like it would make things confusing. I guess I don't get the point in spelling a name differently. It doesn't make sense to me.

  • I’ll say it too: maybe that poster was a bit rough, but I also think that intentional misspelling like jaxson drives me up a wall. I don’t understand people who would choose to do that. But it’s also not my kid, I guess.
  • Aw @chopchop25 thanks! That would be awesome!

Re names - it’s true with even the simplest most normal names, kids will find a way to tease each other about something. My name is fairly common, yet people still misspell it all the time. It also can be pronounced the “wrong” way to sound like a female body part, which for middle school boys is apparently hilarious
I’m irrationally frustrated that I can’t figure out what your name is. I love word games. I will get this. I will.

  • @kiwi2628 I agree with you that you-neek names for sure can harm kids’ potential futures based on how society is today. There have been studies done that found that for people evaluating resumes of potential job applicants, with the exact same qualifications, a person with a more traditional name would be more likely to get asked for an interview vs a person with a “youneek” name. It upsets me because that person could certainly be just as if not more qualified than the “John doe”, but the name puts them at a disadvantage because of our biases. I’ll admit that I’m guilty of this as well (internally judging names, not hiring people), but when I see a made up name or a traditional name with an intentionally strange spelling, I can’t help it. I know it’s not the kid’s fault what their parents named them, but parents should really consider these things when considering names for their kids.

Side note on names and illiteracy @cdepperschmidt... I always remember this from my MIL, who was a teacher in NYC... there were a few times she told me about how kids would come in with their name being either “Name” (pronounced na-may) or “Female” (if a girl, pronounced fe-ma-lay), because their parents, when in the hospital after giving birth, wouldn’t understand the forms and would give them those names because they saw the words on the forms. Not sure if this was more due to a lack of understanding of the English language or illiteracy, but in either case, it doesn’t really reflect well on the child later on.

Haha @DunkinDecaf pm me if you really want to know
  • @pumpkinpancake and @DunkinDecaf I am going with the name 'Regina' and pronounced like 'Vagina', but with an R.....AM I RIGHT!?!?!?
  • @kiwi2628 I used to work offshore with men between the ages of 25-35, and they would pronounce the other female's name (named Regina) like vagina. Because men are perpetually 12.

It’s not fun unless I figure it out myself! So I’m hoping it’s not Regina. Thinking cap on. I’ll pm once I have a good guess haha

  • @krzyriver I agree that it's weird for step dad to post that stuff on FB like that, especially when E can see it. Although, I agree that they gave you permission to stalk ;)
  • So SS has wanted to learn to play guitar. My cousin plays and has agreed to teach him! SS adores my cousin and will think it's so cool. I'm so excited to tell him.

I’m still unapologetically naming this kid Jaxson. We’re planning to call him Jax (thus the spelling we chose. It wasn’t random.) Spelling it “Jacks” as in Jackson seems a bit odd to me and I didn’t want to call him Jax and have his full name spelled Jackson. I personally don’t think Jaxson is THAT weird (not like Darrick imo) but hey we’re all entitled to our own opinions!
Oh shit I stuck my foot in my mouth on that one! I forgot you were using it when I was referring to the December board poster. Mea culpa!

I think it’s worth noting that the studies on names and resumes is more about implicit racial bias. It’s less about Darrick versus Jason and more Latasha versus Lauren. If that makes sense. I think it’s really important to reduce bias in hiring, to the point where we have considered hiding name, gender, even school when we review resumes. It should always be about skills and aptitude.
  • @HoosOnFirst you’re right, and I meant to mention that in my post too, but it got kind of long as it was. I’ve seen studies to both effects (including racial biases and not), but in both cases, it just shows how much your name actually impacts your day to day life. (And I agree, it’s important to try and take steps in hiring to reduce those biases whenever possible, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be common practice yet...)
  • @HoosOnFirst I’m not one bit butt hurt :D I understand your point though.
  • @kiwi2628Posting in spoiler box so as to not ruin the fun for @DunkinDecaf

You’re close with Regina, just remove the “Re”.  Even with the shortened version of it, boys still loved pronouncing it that way, which always drove me nuts!

Booooo I hit quote to reply to this and apparently that opens spoilers. Just as well, I had no idea anyway and the “show” button was staring at me.

  • Sooo...this probably belongs in the baby brain thread but, I left my super expensive custom all weather mats at the car wash. I went back and they checked cameras and we could plainly see who took them. They’re wash club members so the owner has their phone number. I have the license plate also but is it incredibly petty to have the police try get them back (if they even will) if the guy doesn’t return them or let me pick them up? I mean it WAS my bad that I left them in the first place...but I really really want them back.

  • @HoosOnFirst excellent, excellent reference. Do you watch Westworld? There’s a character called Dolores... I can’t think of anything else every time they say her name.  :D

Definitely call first and explain you took them you took them out and forgot to put then back in when you were done and if they refuse then call the cops. At least you asked first

Absolutely! The only show we watch same day it’s on :)
  • @pumpkinpancake I was going to guess Virginia.  One of our friends was in the hospital for a while and we went to visit him.  He told us to check out his nurse’s name.  Whoever wrote it forgot the last i so it said “Virgina” and every time somebody walked into the room, all the guys pointed it out and started giggling.  I half wonder if they did it on purpose to lift his spirits a bit.

I agree about not liking weird spellings, but I think Jaxson is cute.  Maybe it’s because I’ve seen it spelled that way a few times so it seems like an alternate spelling to me, like Ann or Anne, not something purposely misspelled to be different.

  • @jynjer91 I think they should return them. I mean, at a car wash it was obviously an accident. None of this finders keepers crap.
  • Tonight is my last night with DH until Sunday. He wants sex and I feel bad that I want nothing to do with it.
  • I ate an amazing dessert and now I have horrible reflux. I can't sleep and DD keeps waking up because of effig teething. Canines can suck a big one.

  • @jynjer91 - I think they should return them, but I wouldn’t call the cops over it.
  • Totally random reference to APGAR score.  And thrilled I knew what it was without googling it.

  • @chopchop25 - On the breast pump, make sure it is a closed system. If it isn’t, buying new attachments won’t be enough to prevent possible transmission of bacteria or viruses.

Thanks @knottieamusements! I had heard about not sharing pumps, but assumed it was just the tubes/attachments you didn't want to share. I will go do some Googling!

edit update: It's a Spectra closed-system hospital grade. Dr. Google says that hospital grade ones may be okay to reuse, but now I think I'm still nervous about it. Really was hoping to use it as one to keep at work so I didn't have to carry back and forth!
  • @chopchop25 - I would not be nervous about using a closed system pump as long as you replaced all the relevant parts.  (Although- read some more on Dr. Goolge, talk to your doctor or lactation consultant, etc. to get comfortable for yourself.)

There is a reason they are used in hospitals- the system is designed to be used for multiple patients without transferring disease.
