  • Not that my opinion matters @mytrueloves but I really like it.

  • @mytrueloves What?! Florence isn't my style, but it's a totally normal name. What was her objection!?

  • Thanks everyone! DF and I are in love with her name and haven't been swayed in the least.
Her main objection was "All the kids at school are gonna call her Flo and that's the name they use for periods. That's disgusting. This poor kid!"

  • I also love Florence.

Speaking of naming after TV characters. My mom named me off of Samantha on Who's the Boss. I like it, and she was only 17 when she picked it. Thankfully I wasn't a boy, because then I'd be Brian. Named after her boyfriend at the time I was born.
  • @krzyriver My sister is really weird about what offends her sensibilities. She comes off as super progressive but hates when we dress ODD in masculine clothes or give her short haircuts, even if ODD picked them out. She watched ODD being born but is disturbed by the nickname Flo. It's all kinds of weird to me.
I'm also not bothered by the possibility of her name being made fun of in school. I had a completely normal, common name that was popular when I was born and people still gave me rude nicknames. IMO, I can't base my parenting choices on whether kids in her school are going to pick on her. Pretty sure *everyone* gets picked on.

  • On the topic of changing the spellings of names: When I was a teenager, I told everyone that my first son would be named "Steven with an F". When they would point out that that's actually just the name Stefan, Stef-ahn, I would say "no, it's STEVEN but with an F" followed by this rant, verbatim, "If Stephen with a PH is pronounced like Steven with a V, then Stefen with an F should be pronounced the same way. F and PH make the same sound. So, therefore, Stefen, Stephen, and Steven are all the same name."
I was very opinionated about names, especially because I spent hours of my life researching names on a daily basis for my writing. I also had a whole thing about Timothy / Timmy and James / Jimmy.

  • @DunkinDecaf

That is a fabulous picture.  And, yeah, that is pretty much what I’ve observed.
  • @Lisa3379 Haha my husband actually suggested Stannis. And while it's one of the few on there that actually wouldn't be terrible in real life, I was still like "uhh no". I'm a little more traditional than that. I'm all for using TV or movies for name ideas, as long as they're not totally crazy. My husband also suggests totally off-the-wall names like Venom or Vegeta or something ridiculous. So I never know when he's really being serious. We do have a friend with a kid named Aria, so close to Arya.

@DunkinDecaf and I've heard those names become so popular! They've popped up on so many name lists. Pretty sure I couldn't handle hearing that in real life. But I can name them after the real person!

Umm. Go fuck yourself. K thanks.
See, this is more what I was used to with Z. I find it so interesting that people are mad at those of you who won't tell them the sex/name. When we announced that we were having a boy, everyone was like "Nooooo! You're not supposed to find out! You took all the fun out of it!" The reaction was a little less passionate this time I think because a lot of people wanted to know if it was a girl or not, but there was definitely a few who were confused why we wanted to know.

  • I was super weird about sharing names with people. Because I hate hearing all the unwarranted opinions. But especially once we found out it was a girl, we just kind of started telling people. Because #1 I swear there are like 5,000 pregnant ladies in my immediate circle and I'm so afraid of people using it before we do, so we wanted dibs. And #2 my husband just basically just started blurting it out (he is such a blabber mouth, where as I'm much more reserved), so I was just like "Alrighty I guess this is happening." I'm also so indecisive and cautious that sometimes I just need to dive into something or I'll never make a decision.
  • @hannaht8516 I was very indecisive about this one's name too. I kind of had to announce it so I could start using it and see if it felt right. Otherwise I would've spent the rest of this pregnancy second guessing our choice.

I'm still wondering how "Vegeta" is pronounced..
I was adamant about keeping our name choices to ourselves. Now that we're using both of them and I love them we've been telling people when they ask but I'm not announcing it online or anything because as much as I doubt I'll change it, they could still be changed. But if you ladies like the names we chose and use them I wouldn't be upset lol just reassured I chose nice names!
  • One of my best friends has jokingly thrown out that we should name our girl THE EXACT NAME we were thinking (first and middle), and we've told no one our top girl name choice. Granted, my friends like to joke about naming the baby after them, and our toptop cho is a variation of hers, plus I've told them I'm set on the middle name, so not that shocking. But still! Hope she actually likes it haha
  • Now I'm trying to remember what everyone has picked
  • I knew Henry was one of them, but couldn't remember who lol. I've been thinking about referring to baby as G (Griffin) on the board instead of baby. I just didn't want to confuse people.
  • @kiwi2628 Haha well, babies are generally way more fun than coworkers. Also I love the name Henry so it stuck in my mind :)

  • @krzyriver Yes! I really wanted to start using it to get a feel for it and get used to it to make sure it works.

@mamabearcj Vegeta is from Dragonball Z. My husband is a FREAKING NERD. Its like ve-JEE-tah. Like veggie. Lol
  • @DunkinDecaf I like the idea of the spreadsheet! I haven't put LO's name yet (we juse announced today) but I haven't seen anyone say it (that I remember lol)
  • That seems so crazy.
  • We haven’t announced names bc 1) we are team green. And 2) We are still very much undecided for a girl. Josephine or Ella is where we are at right now.

Most people just want to know if this is our last baby. Which I always find such a strange question to answer? It’s our second kid and I guess I’m just not sure if we are done so my answer is always ummm IDK?!
  • @estellegetty I also think the “is this one it?” question is super weird, too. It’s like, let’s get this kid out and see what’s up before we make a decision, yeah?
  • I thought this was great after our unique name discussion. Scary Mommy put out an article about how many stupid names Americans came up with in 2017.

  • ^^ ha yes, I just read that an hour ago!
  • @knottieamusements two pages late, but my husband is a Jim. His Mom literally named him James to call him Jimmy.
  • My personal favorite was Brexleigh.
  • DF and I read that article earlier and I got to Owlsley part and said "How is that old timey, vintage, OR upperclass???"
