Hey mamas, sorry I’ve been MIA over here but it’s been a rough two weeks. I’m wondering if anyone has undergone a preocedure under general anesthesia while pregnant? I was diagnosed with melanoma two weeks ago (perfect timing, huh?). I’ll be having a lymph node biopsy and excision of more skin in a few weeks and I’m just looking for a little reassurance. My oncologist and OB are on the same page with everything but I’m still a little freaked out.
@mrs_drc_rn oh my gosh! I'm sorry, that is so scary. I believe a couple of women recently had cerclages placed (is that the correct verb?), and were under general for that procedure. Hugs, I'm sorry you're going through this.

@mrsbubbles-2 after I lost my job in October I received notice from AFLAC that I could continue paying for my STD plan (mine was around $60.00 a month) until I found a new job. Not sure which carrier you have but you can always ask if the same policy can continue with a new employer.
I made two claims total with my AFLAC STD policy ( childbirth and two months later gallbladder surgery) and was very pleased with their speedy payment and ease of the process.
Good to hear, I have AFLaC and have never used them before.
@mrs_drc_rn I had a cerclage placed two weeks ago. I went under general. I was super nervous about it but got to talk to the anesthesiologist before hand and he said it's perfectly safe. He said there were some medications that they don't use on pregnant women, but they would use safe stuff on me and baby and I would just take a little nap. Doc did an US after the procedure and baby looked fine. Had my preop 1.5 weeks later and baby still looked great.

Oh my goodness I'm so sorry! When I was pregnant with DS2 I had emergency oral surgery and they used general anesthesia. My oral surgeon and OB were in constant contact and everyone felt the procedure was more important than waiting so we made the decision to do it. Everything went ok and my recovery was fine. I know mine had to be done in my second trimester as everyone said that was the safest time. I can totally relate with being freaked out but your medical professionals have your best interests in mind and wouldn't make the wrong decision on your behalf.

@mrs_drc_rn I don't know much about melanoma while pregnant, but my dad, aunt, MIL, and good friend's mother all had melanoma and are all now fine. I actually had pre-cancerous cells removed two years ago, and I've been in the clear since then (I also slather myself in sunscreen and wear giant hats all summer).
I know it's all anecdotal, but I know that when my friend's mom was sick she felt very reassured hearing about all the people who were okay.

@mrs_drc_rn I had general for my cerclage at 13w4d. They protested and wanted me to have a spinal, but I mentally couldn't do it.
It was fine, just like a long blink. I would make sure you know whether or not they are going to push on your throat as you go under. That part freaked me out, and was the most sore during my recovery.

I know I'm pages behind, but I second how awesome aflac is. When my son was born I had to become a sahm to take care of him (hospitalizations, surgeries, appointments, therapies, ect). I had aflac through my work and kept paying for it on my own when I had to leave. My husband then got laid off when my son was 4 months old. Due to our reimbursements from aflac for my son's medical expenses it kept us from going bankrupt.
Also you all are making me want a birth photographer, but I'm already having difficulty finding a newborn photographer that isn't $400 for just the session, that's not including the few photos you get. Also it makes me feel guilty not having one for ds, but for getting one for this babe. But dang you guys make me want one..
I'm not sure about melanoma specifically, but my mom just had a basal cell removed and they just used a local anesthetic. I filmed it for her and took pictures. It was on the top of her head, so she couldn't see, and she's a nurse so procedures are interesting to her. It was a really easy office visit that only took a few minutes. She was able to walk out and drive us home. She never felt any discomfort, only a bit of tugging pressure. @mrs_drc_rn I'm so sorry you are going through this at all, much less at this time. I would maybe see if you could talk to the anesthesiologist ahead of time to ask any questions you have and make sure they are totally aware of the situation? My thoughts are with you!
@derbysquirrel I would assume the anesthesia would be for the lymph node part. That could be pretty deep/uncomfortable if awake. Plus they take much wider margins on melanomas than basals so it might be slightly (or signficantly) more skin involved. Very true though that a lot of skin excisions can be done with local.
@melprop I'm wondering why we didn't have as much tax taken out in 2017. Neither of us changed our information or deductions, our jobs just did it. So instead of a couple hundred back we owe several grand.

@princesslockness That would be a question for your jobs’ payroll departments. If you have your W-2’s from both years, sit down and compare them. If the only significant change is the amount of tax withheld, I would contact your jobs and ask. Also check your final 2017 pay stubs against your W-2’s to be sure the tax withheld matches. But also look at your tax returns from both years. Make sure the forms and amounts on each line are approximately the same. Your issue might be with a tax credit or deduction difference instead of the amount of tax withheld.
Initially the diagnosis was the scary part, but now having the biopsy I’m just totally worried about the baby and being under general so I’m thankful to hear from others who have done it. I appreciate your stories, and thank you so much for everyone offering support. It was caught early, thank goodness, but the oncologist said doing the lymph node biopsy is standard for this stage. Thank you all again so much!
Its tax withheld. I have compared them. I got the 'its what your tax bracket said to do' run around from the payroll lady. She also forgot to pay us on time last month, like the entire direct deposit for an entire school district, so even if she gave a credible answer IDK if I'd trust it.

@princesslockness Federal withholdings decreased in 2018, but not in 2017. Were both of your employers and earnings the same (ish)? Nobody changed jobs or anything?
@mrsbubbles-2 nj doesn’t have mandatory paid leave- it’s all depends on your company- mine I made 80%. I can’t believe that some company’s pay 60 a month or nothing at all. that seems insane. I wish something could be done! Our country is so backwards in so many areas.

@princesslockness I would call the higher-up person above the woman you talked to and lodge a complaint. If it’s just your paycheck and you didn’t change any withholding, she should’ve withheld what you wanted.
You can check the 2017 tax tables to figure out what should have been withheld from your paycheck after your allowances are deducted. You’d check your federally taxable pay from a pay stub, then deduct the amount suggested for each allowance you claimed on your W-4. That would give you the amount of pay to base your withholding off of, and the tax table will tell you the amount that should have been deducted. Your pay stubs might have the number of allowances on them, or they may not. DH’s pay stubs are from a big firm, and they list the number of allowances. My old pay stubs were processed on small business computerized software and didn’t include that info.
Yeah but @princesslockness Is your paycheck processing done by one of the major companies? (ADP, Paychex, Paylocity, Paycom, etc.?) I can't imagine a whole school district doing payroll manually. Most likely they are using a vendor like this and all the payroll person enters is the exemptions (or allowances, same thing). So the payroll person probably really is clueless about the withholding amount because all she's doing is entering the number of exemptions.
Did your state taxes or anything else pre-tax change? Medical withholdings? 401(k) ? Anything like that that may have impacted the taxable wages? Are your Box 1 wages the same/close?

Just throwing out my two cents on this, as I am a photographer, and one day I'd love to specialize in newborns. $400 for a newborn session is, in most locations, about what to expect to pay for good quality. You really get what you pay for in this case. You want to make sure that the photographer has had plenty of newborn safety training and workshops so that they can capture beautiful photos while posing the fragile newborn safely, especially if they do a pose such as froggy (where the baby is "holding" their head up). I have heard so many horror stories about "budget" newborn photographers, and it's scary that people don't always realize how certain poses can be very dangerous for baby if they're not done correctly.
I'd shop around to see who includes the best package for the price, as some photographers specialize in IPS (in person sales) where you pay the session fee and then everything is a la cart, as you will usually end up paying much more in that situation; vs photographers who include a certain number of digital images in their base price.
