Re: Weekly Randoms 2/19

  • DH has the flu. Our family doctor bitched me out for not getting a flu shot this year. In my defense, I’m pretty sure I had the flu between Christmas & New Years. Anyway, now I’m hoping that I don’t get it.

I filled DH’s prescription for Tamiflu, got groceries, and just wandered around Walmart for awhile to gtf out of the house. Saw about 50 of my students - must avoid Walmart like the plague on Monday afternoons now. And now I have to get ready for the upcoming week and take the trash out to the road since DH isn’t capable at the moment.

Your doctor sounds wonderful. I’d be getting a new one. Some new research is actually showing a correlation between the flu shot and those who got the flu - hypothesising that the flu shot may have caused the flu to be worse, rather than helpful.

So a big middle finger to him.
  • Just had my first therapy session in a while and it was so nice to talk to my therapist. She has a two year old, and it was so nice to talk new mom anxiety with someone who totally gets it. Apparently I'm not the only person who has sat analyzing my ultrasound pictures because I swear something is not right with my baby's jawline.

Also, I was wearing a red shirt that was shedding so I changed out of it. It also somehow had gotten stuck in the waistband of my leggings so twice when I've gone to the bathroom there's been little red fabric on the toilet paper, giving me a heart attack

My doc is very big on pregnant women getting the flu shot. According to his statistics, I’m 4x more likely to end up in the hospital from it than DS, and he’s 7yo. I’m going to call out to my local health dept office tomorrow because no one around me has them anymore.
FX you don't get it! Can you start on Tamiflu also or is your doc not recommending that?

  • My own non-medical anecdotal experience of the people I know who have gotten the flu this year, vaccinated and non-vaccinated got it pretty equally this flu season. But, those I know who have been vaccinated ended up suffering far less severe symptoms and the duration of sickness didn't last as long as the non-vaccinated crowd overall. Of course not everyone fit those assumptions, but on the whole, the vast majority seem to have followed this trend.

I didn't really get asked if I wanted a flu vaccine, at my first prenatal appointment the nurse who took my vitals, and updated my medical history, told me to raise my sleeve and jabbed me. I would have requested one had we got around to that in our conversation, though.
  • Hugs, @calimom2524 - we're here for you whenever you want to talk!

@neeraja_k that sounds so stressful. We'll likely be moving either during the pregnancy or soon after just because we've outgrown our house and it stresses me the eff out to think of bringing back the baby stuff on top of the toddler stuff, when that's already making our house feel like a sardine tin. Because we live in an insanely expensive area, I don't think we can afford a bigger house here, so that would mean DH has to find a new job somewhere else, possibly on the complete opposite side of the country. I'm high risk due to my losses, and now that we're happy with my doctor, hospital, and the plan we've come up with, not to mention our insurance coverage, we definitely don't want to move before baby is born, so I would probably tell your DH the same. While it's stressful moving with a newborn, it would be much, much easier to not have to deal with all of the medical stuff while pregnant, especially if you happened to deliver early.

  • @melprop save yourself time and make sure you ask if they have the preservative free shot.  Only my OB did here in town.
  • Also, from what I was reading the idea that the flu shot gave people the flu is based more on the idea that because of the vaccine the flu virus keeps mutating and getting stronger, not that the flu vaccine actually gave people the flu.  As is the nature of a virus.  So lose lose but the Spanish flu epidemic wasn't fun so please keep making vaccines

Regardless, he shouldn’t be bitching anyone out.

Yes. This is the way I heard it, too. Words are hard. Lol.
  • As for my doc bitching me out, that’s just how he is. I’ve been going to him for almost 15 years, and he’s awesome in every other way. Considering we live in the middle of nowhere and travel 1+ hrs for all our other doctors including my OB, I’m willing to overlook his bedside manner. I like him otherwise, he works in the health system we prefer, he’s close, and we can get same-day appts.
  • We all got flu shots. DS got type A first and only ran a fever for 2 days and was pretty much back to normal. He didn’t even have a fever anymore when I took him to the doctor. With type B he had a fever for about 3/4 days. He was congested for about a week. His fever never got Higher than 102. When I got type B from him, I was sick for a weekend really. I took 4 doses (two days) of tamiflu but threw it all up and stopped taking it. After our experiences, even though we got the shot, and got the flu, I’m team shot because we had such mild cases compared to some of the stories I’ve heard.
  • I am typically anti-flu shot. I don’t really know why but last fall was the first time I’ve ever gotten it and I almost immediately got sick and was sick from early November until January. I had a horrible cough, low grade fevers, and sinus issues that two rounds of antibiotics didn’t clear. Also found out I had mono at some point last fall. And, I’m still coughing up yellow phlegm every morning. So, even though my doc has assured me that there’s no correlation between me being sick and the flu shot, I will never get another one. And I’m pro vaccine.
  • @calimom2524 - Nice! Although I do need to ask, this won't change anything with HDTD, right? (Hump Day Tieks Day) Because I have serious shoe envy

yeah that is weirdly short-sighted... I would be thrilled for cousins the same age!

  • @jsnakehole but why?
This. I would be over the moon if my younger brother were having a baby now, I would love for my daughter to have a close cousin!

  • I just booked off next Monday and Tuesday to paint, including DS2's room (so we can move him out of there and start decorating the nursery, yay!). I have 5 rooms in my house that need painting, and that we have paint for - we were supposed to hire FIL to do them all but he and BIL have been working on redoing our master shower instead so I am going to get the ball rolling at first and then he can do whichever rooms I don't get around to. I am so excited - we moved in in October and I feel like there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel on some of our projects! I also have already bought decals, a rug and curtains for baby's room so excited to start setting it up once DS2's room is all set up and he is settled and moved out of the nursery.

  • @Firemanswife11 was it you that wanted a dock a tot? Have you looked at the snuggle me? It cuddle me, I'm forgetting.  Anyway one of my good friends is in love with hers and I think it was like $120, and sometimes there are coupons.
  • I wish we had a TWAT WAFFLE TUESDAY but I'll just bitch here, lol. So, part of my job is to do weather alerts for my community. Basically, I let people know when shit's gonna hit the fan. For the last two years, I have done this without fail, staying up all night on multiple occasions (we're in the middle of Tornado Alley), working all weekend long, etc. I did this because my coworker was pregnant in 2016, and then she had a newborn in 2017. Naturally, it should be her turn. But no. No, I am being added to the dispatchers' call list so I can keep doing this, when I really need my sleep and need rest, and NOT stress. I was up all night a few weeks ago when we had an ice storm with NO HELP and was so sick the next day with a migraine and morning sickness and my coworker acted like she had no clue what even happened. I'm pissed TFO and hate sometimes that I am so reliable and good at my job. Because then people who sit back and pretend like they don't know how to do their jobs get away with being able to sleep and act like an airhead. /rant.
  • @coffeecocktailsandcake no, I think I just told someone that's what they were called. I don't recall who though. We posted at the exact same time haha. I was like, wow, that was a quick response!
  • I loved our Dock A Tot.  But I bought the bigger size.  It's the only way I could put the kid in the crib he loved being held so much.
  • alinafed I am so jealous you are painting already! We still need to rip up carpet and get a ton of odds and ends out of the room that will be the nursery.
  • Re: My brother being a douche- my thoughts exactly. My cousin is 9 months younger than me and we're super close. I'd love for my baby and their cousin to be that close. He just doesn't like that my parents will probably see my baby more because I chose to live ten minutes from them and he lives a state over. He's already outlined that while my parents are not allowed in the delivery room, they are expected to use their sick time to take two weeks off of work to stay with him and his wife when their baby is born (despite the fact that my SIL's parents will be staying over and then my parents won't have sick time to use to help me with my baby). Just anything to make sure his baby gets the most attention. I know that he is really actively hoping I don't have a girl (despite us wanting a girl) because then his daughter will have more attention. Which is silly because almost every baby in our extended family with the exception of one has been a girl, so if I have a boy it will be pretty novel. It's just so stupid and I would think now is the time for us to grow up but I guess not.

  • @scottishlass1213 I won't mind having my mom over the first few days after my baby comes home, but I don't expect her to sleepover. She can come by when she can. My parents still work and they have their own lives, I don't expect them to drop everything.
