Re: Weekly Randoms 1/22

  • I mean, you totally could go to a concert at 2 weeks postpartum, but you would have to pump, probably bring a peri bottle with you, store the milk you pumped, etc. definitely more trouble than it’s worth. I wouldn’t do it.
You also have to consider that lots of women go close to 2 weeks overdue...which means she may not even be 2 weeks PP for this concert.  She may not even be one week PP for the concert.  I wouldn't do it either.  I usually won't even go out to dinner until my babies are mostly sttn so I know I don't need to like bring a pump and use it in the restaurant bathroom.  Too annoying.

@ssthomps 30 days? Oh, hell no. What about grocery shopping? Outside of cold and flu season, I say take the baby with you everywhere. I mean, you could technically take a baby to a concert if they wore those noise cancelling earmuffs, but you would probably get some side eye
Yes, 30 days I will have to get a refresher on why they believe this. I live in South a Florida where there is a hodge podge of cultures and some of the believes/superstitions are really extreme especially for new moms and new babies. That would be a good thread to start. What’s the craziest superstitions you have heard?

Oh and as far as running errand like going to the grocery store ect? Nope, the whole family chips in so the new Mom doesn’t have to do anything, but care for the new baby. This also helps alleviate the excuse to need to leave the house.
  • @hardlyhannah yep, I totally agree with all that.  I got out of the house postpartum, but I had a real issue committing to a time to meet a friend or something.  I get there when I can, cool?  I remember going to a wedding 10 days postpartum and he would not let me put him down to get ready for the wedding so I put a pillow on the bathroom counter and set him on it so I could touch him and still put my makeup on.

  • So I finished a HUGE project for the CDC that is due on Monday. I don't work Monday because it's my birthday so I felt awesome getting it finished early. Then I get an email earlier saying they have changed all the due dates until later and PART of the project isn't even due now until ... JUNE 30TH. WTAF!!! June. 30th. That's 6 extra months for these lazy jerks to get their shiiii together and I'm done. I just want a pat on the back from these people. Lol.

On the topic of leaving the house postpartum, I’m so excited this baby will arrive in late summer. I have a November and December baby and it will be so nice to not have to bundle the baby up so much just to get to/from the car.

Unrelated: I have ignored my intense craving for a Wendy’s cheeseburger all day. And, now I’m about to make roasted chicken. Gag me.

  • Help! Olive Garden or a burger joint or take out Chinese food??? This is a big decision!!

As as for the concert...I’m a big hell no to that. At 2 weeks pop with DS I was a hot mess. Leaky, sore, hormonal, sleep deprived! Kudos to the moms who can be up and about at that point... although I have a feeling with #2 I simply won’t be able to be out of commission like the last time since I’ll have DS to look after!!

  • @ecwk I had the chinese for lunch, so now that Olive Garden soup & salad sounds pretty fantastic.
  • @ecwk Olive Garden so I can live vicariously. I was invited to go there for lunch today but had stupid meetings so I couldn’t and now it’s all I want

  • I just got clarification from my friend, who is on her second and currently 8 months. She doesn’t leave the house until her newborns 2 month shots.
  • Haha @hardlyhannah I'm cool with that, I like the alliteration in your name.

  • After we had DD2, we all went to a restaurant for dinner about a week after she was born.  It was actually no big deal, she slept in her car seat the whole time.

But I also can't sit still for too long so the idea of being cooped up in the house for more than a few days drives me batty.

Although, hell to the no on taking all the kids food shopping.  Amazon fresh to the rescue!

  • @ecwk +1 for Olive Garden!

@firemanswife11 congrats on getting the project done! Sorry the deadline got moved so far out, that’s so frustrating!

@ssthomps I lived in s. Florida for 2 years before moving up here. It’s definitely one of the most interesting places I’ve lived! 2 months?!? I’m a total homebody and that’s beyond what I could do...

@F47 any way you can make the chicken, have a ‘nope’ moment and get your Wendy’s fix?

@livinthesunnylife wow a wedding 10 days pp? You are a brave brave woman!

  • After DS2 (had him on Monday, got home on Tuesday) I went to my ILs for Thanksgiving that Thursday then went Black Friday shopping the next day with him in the Moby wrap. After DS1 I don't think I really left the house for at least a month except for doctor's appointments. It really has been drastically different between the two but I know I felt 100 times better after #2 than I did #1. I also think delivery has a lot to do with it, after delivery of DS1 I felt like I was recovering from the flu and a car accident and the worst period in the world but with DS2 I only didn't have many complaints. I cannot imagine staying home for a long period of time, but I also wouldn't go to a concert that quick either. Concert venues around here have eleventy billion stairs and..no thanks with pp bleeding.

  • When I had DS, we stopped at Walmart on the way home from the hospital. Really didn’t have a choice. We were discharged on Christmas Eve, DS needed preemie clothes & diapers, and all the stores were closing within a couple hours. We then went to 4 different relatives’ houses between that night and Christmas Day. Went back out to a friend’s for NYE. I can’t imagine not leaving the house for 2 months straight, or even a couple of weeks.
  • My parents live about a ten minute walk from me, and the weather in early September is typically really beautiful in NYC, so I have every intention of putting my baby in a stroller and walking over to see grandma and grandpa as soon as I feel up to it. And then having grandma and grandpa watch the baby so mommy can take a nap.

Her words were “I go nowhere until she gets her two months shots”.

I am getting clarification on why this is and will update y’all.
  • @Firemanswife11 lol! It’s so much harder on mobile, major props to anyone who mobile bumps 100%

@jsnakehole that sounds like a beautiful plan!

But what about doctor visits that first week? Or if baby has jaundice? Surely she’d leave for those

  • I would say in the first thirty days the only time I leave is for baby’s two week appointment. I just wanna sit and nurse and get my supply going.
  • I thought I was intense because I wouldn't take my kids ON AN AIRPLANE until after their 2 month shots.  I mean DD1 had colic so I rarely left the house with her because I was so embarrassed by her constant screaming, but I left the house with DD2 all the time.

Speaking of DD2, she took exactly one nap today, from 1130-noon.  She fell asleep in her high chair between spoonfuls of puree just now.  Early bedtime tonight.  Poor thing.  Sh3 hates napping at daycare, but usually I get at least 2 30 minute naps.  And she was up at 7 this morning.  Wtf.
  • 30 days after the baby is born is just crazy talk. I don’t think we did anything too adventurous, but we saw friends, lots of trips to Target during maternity leave, went to a brewery at 2 or 3 weeks PP.
I did have a c/s, so sitting in a car for a long period was uncomfortable at first and I couldn’t drive for the first week or 2 either. I remember going stir crazy those first couple of weeks since DH only had a few days off work.

  • @ecwk you inspired me to whine at my husband until we got Olive Garden. We got it to go so I can put it away for later if my nausea kicks in.

  • SO is taking way too long to decide where we are going to dinner so I’m having a giant bowl of ice cream with chocolate syrup and whipped cream.

  • I think I stayed home the first week or week and a half because I was just a hot mess (leaky everywhere, tired, general blah) but I started to go stir crazy SO quickly. I used to definitely side eye parents who had newborn-looking babies out in public because of germs, but then became a mom and realized mental health is important. It wasn’t like I was handing him over to coughing strangers. We went to Qdoba and Target at 2 weeks pp and it helped make me feel normal again. Then we pretty much just visited grandparent houses or restaurants the next month because we’re lame and boring. The baby sleeps so much that other than breastfeeding on demand it was easier to take DS out as a baby than as a toddler. Also I feel 100% more comfortable nursing now so I’d totally nurse in a wrap while walking around a store.
  • I had a friend that it was custom to not only leave the house for 30 days but to also have no visitors for the first thirty days postpartum!  I guess her mom came to stay with them but other than that, she literally would hold the baby in the window for people to see. Part of me thought that was amazing and the other part of me thought I’d start to feel isolated.

I know I definitely tried to do too much too soon, two days after we got home I tried to run to target and almost cried when I realized what I needed was on opposite ends of the store! I must have looked nuts because everyone kept stopping to ask if I was okay. I definitely plan on asking for more help this time around!

I think a lot of cultures take better care of their postpartum mothers than we do in the US. I find this stuff so interesting.
  • With my first I didn’t take him anywhere with lots of people for the first 2 months till he got his shots. We have one of the highest rates of nonvaxxers in Portland.

with the second, not so easy. And with the third, probably the same. It seems like once people realize it’s not your first they aren’t trying to touch to look at your kids so much anyway lol
