I'm trying to get him through this wake up with a pickup or nursing. Sucks bc I just want to go to sleep!!!!! And my left side is leaking, haven't had that happen in forever
Sitb
This was us last night too. She was fussing for 10 minute intervals during part of the night and even though she would put herself back to sleep I had to stay up for the whole thing.
@jsmai sucks huh. I did 2 check ins where he cried a bunch but then went to sleep. Unfortunately I was up for the day by then since It had been 45 min. Just not sure how long to let him fuss before going in. It seemed like he would just keep fussing forever but not actually crying
We really don't have one. The only real consistent thing is bed time which is 6:30-7. For naps we follow her cues but I feel like her wake times are too short for being 7.5 months. It's a struggle to keep her awake for 2 hrs in between naps. I want to try to stretch her wake times but then if She gets overtired she won't be able to put herself to sleep. She's still taking 3 naps for the most part and she wakes up for the day 6-7. So she is definitely getting enough night sleep.
No official sleep training here either. BUT she's been sleeping in her crib since Wednesday night! We miss her in bed... but I told DH, he was never the one getting whacked, kicked and everything else in the motn, haha! She loved sleeping as close to me as possible. Sigh, I do miss her though. My quality of sleep is a bit better. Definitely not the difference I thought there'd be but I imagine it'll get much better soon. She'll probably sleep with us while we're on vacation next month.
How long do you let LO fuss before doing a check? If I go in he screams bloody murder but if I let him fuss he'll do it forever sometimes. Can't find a good balance
that being said I'm on night 5 and last night was the first night I've had to go back for more than 2 checks/soothing so I can't complain. I did want to pick him up and nurse him to sleep bc I was tired and need to look nice for work but I held strong

S would scream too. Honestly, when we first started, I didn't do the checks, I went straight CIO because of her getting more worked up if we went in. But now I give her 20 mins because if she is crying it usually is because she pooped but I wait just to make sure.
I start at five minutes and then ten for the next check and then intervals of 15 after that.
do you start the 5 min if it is 5 min of real crying or just any sort of fussing sound?
5 minutes of serious fussing. I let him fuss for a bit on his own if it's just general whining but when it's borderline crying then I'll go check because it's a good indication he has a wet diaper.
Edited to add: If he's not wet I never pick him up. Just rub his belly and sing a song and leave. He usually cries pretty hard after but the whole check and soothe process never took us longer than 1.5 hours before he fell asleep and that was for two nights. I never have to check him anymore.
We had to go to cio instead of ferber since S will cry worse when I go in and dont give her a nursing session, always. If it's been less than 7 hours than her last feeding I cio for up to 20 minutes or when H wakes up and asks me if I'm going to get her. Ugh. Usually she'll re settle after 5-10. If it's been 7+hours since her last feed I'll feed her immediately.
We are more CIO because E gets worse if I go in and touch her without picking up. I mentally set my limit at 20 minutes, and have rarely had her exceed that. The other night she went for almost 30 min MOTN after we'd gone in twice to calm her down and snuggle her back to sleep. I had to talk DH out of going to check her earlier, but thankfully she eventually fell asleep.
Help! A normally goes to bed around 7, she passed out around 5 and I did too. We both woke up at 7. Start the routine and put her to bed or let her play for a half hour?
I think S is changing her sleep schedule. She's pretty much dropped her 3rd nap and this morning she woke up at 8. She normally wakes up for the day Around 6:30 but recently has been stretching to 7:30ish. Her bedtime is 6:30-7. If she starts waking up late consistently, should I push her bedtime back later?
B has a tooth coming in, I can feel the sharpness. He's struggling to sleep. Do I hold strong on no pickup/feed or do I comfort so he can sleep
I haven't dealt with teething yet, but everything I read on sleep training basically said to soothe your LO during teething. Same would go for being sick.

That's what I was thinking too. I had to (bottle) feed him to sleep tonight after a meltdown and it took forever to get him to sleep. I don't want to ruin what I've worked on but i also don't want him to suffer
@kvruns I second the comforting. If it hurts enough to be waking and upset, the comfort should help him. At least that's what I tell myself.
@ladybug2821 Why would you need to push the bedtime? Is it that she's sleeping too late for you to start the day? If so, yes, move the bed time. Otherwise, it is in my experience that they will move to roughly 12 hours of straight sleep. It is the naps that will drop. In fact, out now 3 yo moved to 12 hours a night and two naps at 8.5 mo and dropped the second nap at just over a year. Since then she has been a 12 hours a night and 1 1-2 hour nap a day kid.

No! From one of the books I read on sleep it said that they should be moving toward sleeping a longer stretch at night and less during the day. Less during the day means dropping a nap and/or having shorter naps.

If you want to comfort I would. When mine was teething bad we tried to sooth and used cold teethers which sort of helped. After that we gave her a little Tylenol because she was in pain. All that being said she really only had 2 bad nights and they weren't really that bad.
@SandNStarsNJ I was thinking I would need to push it back because if she is going to bed at 7 and waking up at 8, that would be 13 hrs of sleep. So I'm wondering if I should push her bed time back to 8 or just keep it as is.

Keep it as it is. That's a perfect sleep for a baby that age!
S is doing really good with night sleep but I'm not sure how to help her during the day. She's pretty much dropped her third nap but her first 2 naps are still happening too early. It's a struggle to keep her awake longer than 2 hrs. Her naps vary from 1-2 hrs. So if she wakes at 7, naps at 9, wakes at 10, she's already trying to nap at 12. If she did take a 2 hr nap, she still would end up awake all the way until we start bedtime routine at 6:15/6:30. That is so long. Trying to extend by 15 mins isn't working like I thought because she gets so cranky.
@ladybug2821 so she naps in the morning but then won't do it in the afternoon?
Pretty much. Today she took her second nap at 12:30 and woke up around 2. I'm going to try to put her down around 4. H said she normally just cries and cries in her crib if he tries to put her down for a third nap.

I've only had two naps a day for a long time now. 10-12 and 14-16. And she can easily skip the 14-16 one and is awake from 12 to 19. Sometimes she just had 40 min in the car if I go visit a friend further away and she is awake until I leave back home. She has too much to do/see. I know if I want her to sleep proper I need to stay home. So when I plan visits I try to give her days at home around it.
Praise be to the power of exhaustion! My sister came this weekend and basically played with A all day (outside of her naps). Last night, she passed out at 6:30 after a story and 1 song (its normally 3 songs; she cries for the 1st, settles for the 2nd and falls asleep during the 3rd). Tonight, she fell asleep on the boob around 6:30 and stayed asleep when I transferred her to the crib and put on her sleep sack. All hail my sister, I needed this!
I thought I'd share my experience with sleep training. My LO (9 months) has been nursed to sleep since birth (for various reasons) and the last month or more he's been waking up and crying 4-6 times at night. He fell asleep on the boob but woke up in the crib alone, so who can blame him - he couldn't go back to sleep alone. He wasn't getting much rest (neither did I) so I worked with a 'sleep consultant' because I thought we needed one.
I can't stand hearing my baby cry for more than two minutes so CIO or CC was out of the question. To cut a long story short (somehow, lol) on day 2 my husband and I changed the plan (because it just wasn't working to hear my baby cry so much and not be calmed down by anything - as much as we tried to rock, pat, hold, kiss, shush, sing ... he didn't care for any of it) - we followed our instinct, tossed the plan out and did what we were told not to do - I nursed my baby! But I did so until he was only half asleep, removed him from my boob (several times, until he didn't search for it anymore) and moved to the crib. First night he woke up twice, second night once. We repeat the steps (nurse -> crib) and LO cries less than a few seconds or not at all.
Our idea, not the consultant's.
I'm not saying their plans don't work, what I just wanted to share is that parents know better than any sleep consultant so please listen to your gut - and especially your baby ...
Agree, mother instincts are wonderful. My LO too gets a bottle before nap and bed. (I unfortunately didn't managed to breastfeed) She'll be dozing of and I put her half asleep in her bed. She opens her eyes, smiles at me, turns on her side or belly and sleeps. Best decision ever. The whole CIO isn't for me either. What does CC stand for?
I also nurse to sleep! Well I did for a while (luckily he still slept through the night for the most part) but in preparation for eventual weening, sleepovers where I'm not there etc. I started to nurse until he was half asleep and then put him down. If he lost his mind I would pick him back up and nurse him again. Now he nurses before every nap and before bed. But not to sleep. But it's part of his bedtime routine and I enjoy it. Sometimes he still falls asleep but only if he's really tired. The other night I had an appointment and missed bedtime and my husband put him down. He didn't even give him a bottle and he went down all by himself. So now we nurse because we want to. Not because we need to. I consider that a success

Exactly! Sounds like what we're doing, so hopefully we'll get to the point where he can go to sleep without me, in case I'm not there. But I enjoy it too
