Anyone else thinking about using their maiden name for the middle name? My maiden name is actually a very common boy name's nickname spelled slightly differently so it really fits perfectly as a boy middle name. Though I know my sister will also use it as a middle name for a boy (if she has one). She doesn't mind, but anyone think that would be weird - cousins with the same middle name?
I don't think its weird at all! In fact, I think it gives them a nice little connection to each other, especially if they dont share the same last name! DH's family pretty much gave all of the boys the same middle name. Him, a couple of his cousins, and even his brother all have the same middle name in honor of their grandfather! It is DS middle name as well :)

  • So many great names!

Top contenders right now are Nora Jane for a girl and Theodore Robert for a boy

Others girl names: Eleanor, Alice, Clara

Other boy names: Wesley, Benjamin, Thomas, Henry

Thoughts on using Nora as a nickname for Eleanor? I

I actually wanted to use Nora as a nickname for Eleanor! Nora was the name I have wanted to use since before I was even married, but DH absolutely hated it so unfortunately, it didnt work for us. I tried it when we were pregnant with DS and i tried it again when names came up for this LO but no luck :(. Maybe I will just have to live vicariously through you, if you choose to use it!

Thank you!  They are family names of my Dad and Grandfather... it means so much to me to be able to name my child after people I love and admire so much!

Thanks everyone. I'm excited to use my maiden name as the middle. Just have to make sure DH is on board, which he currently seems to be.

@NarrowHouses - I think Nora would be a fine nn for Eleanor.
Eleanor is my #1 girl name but we'd use the nn Nori. I love the nn Nori and it flows so well with our last name. We're having a boy so I'm secretly making sure anything on my list sounds good with Eleanor/Nori for the future.

edit: typo - I really need to start proofreading.

  • I think every girl born in the 80s had the middle name Lynn (mine) or Marie (my sister) or Ann (like half my cousins).
That's all the girls in my immediate family, my middle name is Lynn, my sister's is Marie, and my mom's is Ann haha
This is hilarious to me. My mom's mn is Lynn mine is Marie, and my sister's is Ann.

  • @danijo Most of the firstborn sons in my family have their mom's maiden name as a middle name, so I definitely don't think it is weird. Maybe it is a regional tradition? We always planned to do that, but then my husband suggested my grandfather's middle name as a middle name if this baby is a boy, and i really liked that idea. I have a close connection to my parents and brothers, but not so much to my paternal grandparents who my maiden name comes from before them, so I don't mind giving up that tradition and using my maternal grandfather's name instead. I definitely think it is a sweet idea though. I wouldn't hesitate to do it at all if I were you.
  • @NarrowHouses I also think Nora is a great nn for Eleanor.
We did a version of Eleanor as a nod to my Grandma. That name has a special place in my heart

  • @krex I'm a big fan of family names as middle names. Any family names that could work? Also, if you'll give us some info on last name (like starts with X, has Y syllables, etc.) or how many syllables you're interested in the middle name being, that'd help guide some suggestions.

So, no real family names that will work, unfortunately.  Our last name starts with J, two syllables.

We always said that we'd use Elisabeth as a middle name, but DH seems to be wavering.  Our expecting mother has a French heritage, so I was hoping to use something with a French background, to honor her.  However, can't use Chloe, as that's a close niece's name.  I also want to avoid anything with a K sound, as I don't want it to sound too matchy with "Kaitlyn".

  • Since the first name and last name are two syllables I'd stick with either 1 or 3. I am a fan of Behind the Name's website and you can filter to find what type of name you're looking for. These were French feminine names with 1 or 3 syllables on my search that I liked.

    1 syllable:
    Eve
    Luce
    Rose

    3 syllables:
    Arianne
    Eloise
    Emilie
    Isabel/Isabelle
    Madaline/Madeleine
    Rosalie

  • Okay so we have tentatively picked out name!

    Josephine Elizabeth!
With a nickname of Josie or Jo. We are giving it a week calling her that and seeing how it sounds. But I think we will be keeping this name :)

@krex I vote for Kaitlyn Louise, Rose, or Emilie

    Love the name!

We had initially picked Kaitlyn Elisabeth, but now DH seems to be wavering on the "Elisabeth" part.  I'm also still not sure how I want to spell the first name.  DH doesn't seem to like Caitlin.  Sigh.

What's EM's name?  It would be awesome for you to use that (or her middle name) or have her help you pick the name!

I feel like the names on the baby names board are so out there. And people are always repeating the same ones. How do they all like the same, odd choices for names?

We settled on Benjamin for our boy. We caused some controversy by not passing down my DF's name and Ben is a name we both love and think is classic/strong enough for people to not totally hate haha. My DD is Lucy so it goes well with hers too.
Totally agree! They like old, terrible baby names. Don't even mention a name on top 10 list, they'll banish you. Lol

  • DS1 is Archer Ryan
    this boy is Fletcher Jack

.... An archer needs his arrow to guide him to his target. An arrow needs i's its 3 feathers to soar. Each feather on the arrow is called a "fletch".

Jack is after my Papa who just passed thieves Sunday. Ok Saturday we took our last pictures with him and we told him the new babies name.
  • @awoodruff27 my DD is Josephine and we call her Josie! Nice pick! It's not super common and we get lots of compliments on it.

  • If baby is a boy, he'll be Milo Aurthur. Aurthur is H's grandfather's MN, and the two of them are extremely close, so I was more than happy to let him have that one.

If baby is a girl... no name yet. H hates my ideas, I hate his. I've been trying to save the names I really love until we find out so he won't shoot them down and make me sad unnecessarily, but I'm a big fan of Siobhan, Dorothy, and Margot.
  • Our little boy will be Damien Kristopher. DH had a dream and we both fell in love with the name, gotten some mixed feedback by some of the more religious family members but they'll have to deal with it.

    @JAGinMI thanks!

@JessicaHerron13 I love your boys names! So adorable!

Edited to add: Has anyone thought about initials when deciding names? Just realized Josephine would be J.E.W....Yeah.

My mom is big on "themes" she added an extra E to my middle name so my first, middle and last would all end in E. And my brother... Is M.R.D.

Mr. D. Yep she did it on purpose.

Mom to Madison- 5 and Lillian 2....and now surprise baby #3!
  • @EmeraldNC our DS is Thomas Courtney. He is named after DH, DH's father and grandfather but with different middle names. We love the name Thomas. We don't even shorten it. Are you going by Thomas or a nickname version?

  • Yes, I'm having a boy. His name will be Ezra Davis. Davis is a middle name from my dad's side.
  • @awoodruff27 Originally we like Benjamin James, but DH couldn't get around the initials of BJ.  So now we are Benjamin Sawyer, which in reality is only slightly better...

We are going to call him Fitz.  Short for his middle name Fitzgerald.  Part of my Dad's name is Thomas, and they called him Tommy growing up.

I love Thomas Courtney... Courtney is my first name. :)

  • @awoodruff27 I try to be mindful of potential nicknames and initials. I cringed when a good friend sent baby announcements and I realized her daughter's initials were TMI.

The Mr was in LOVE with an M name for DD originally and we had contemplated using my maiden name as a middle... but that would have made her MLF. Waaaaaay to close to MILF for my comfort.

EM's name is one that ends in "Lyn"...so that won't work.  She doesn't have a middle name.  I've asked her if she has ideas for the name, but she doesn't want to provide input...so I'm not wanting to push it.

  • Our son's name will be Anderson Daniel. Andy for short. Anderson was my maiden name, and Daniel after my FIL. I think I have a unique, but not totally out there name myself which I have truly come to appreciate, and wanted that for my child. @danijo My husband also has his mom's maiden name as his middle name. As you can see we are all for it!

I love Anderson! It is actually my mom's maiden name and I would love to use it since I used my maiden name, Graham, for DS1. Although when I saw my out of state cousin she mentioned she liked Anderson (her maiden name) if she ever has a boy after hearing I named DS my maiden name. Now I feel like a jerk if I use it. Whomp whomp.

  • Love Anderson!
  • I'm jealous of all you ladies with cool maiden names! Every single last name in the history of our families is ugly, and just would not work for a first name. I love that tradition though! And Anderson is adorable.
  • Love Anderson!
I was catching up on this thread and reading too fast.  For a hot moment I thought this was the name you picked out haha.  I thought "Ohhhh no @Stankonia2014.  I never thought you would be one I would have to chat with about first names". Haha... carry on!

DH and I are no waffling on the spelling of Bridgette if this little on is a girl.  We're now torn between Bridget and Bridgette.  I love the look of the longer form, but I keep thinking what a pain the ass it will be for the poor thing to sign.  Also, the more common Irish spelling is Bridget (when not in more traditional form - Brighid) which is kind of swaying me a bit.
  • @Elyse1384, well I was suppose to quote so it made sense, so I can see why you'd be confused.

I don't think you can go wrong with either spelling of 'Bridget'.
