  • You all have so many names! H and I are having such an awful time trying to agree on names that I decided we're not going to talk about names again until we find out the sex. If we're going to debate names until the cows come home, we can at least narrow down the arguments to one half of the metaphorical baby name book.

  • @texasgal25 My husband and I feel the exact some way as you about those names.  We literally just had this conversation.  "Ted" makes me cringe.  "Teddy" is not as bad for a little kid, but I don't like it for an adult.  I also don't really love the name Theo so I feel like the name is off the list now unless Theo grows on me.  No one is every going to call the kid Theodore all the time.

This will be our second, so we still have two names left from last time (using the criteria of a) more than one syllable, 2) no 'S' or 'A' names and 3) our families speak French, so the name must be bilingual and easily pronounced by a French person/teacher.

Our first is Zoe. We are thinking Maelle (girl) or Julien (boy).
  • There are some super cute names on here!
I keep a running list of names on my phone, and DH and I visit it off and on throughout each pregnancy (#3 here), but we haven't actually made the final decision until each babe has come out.  I get scared to commit, plus we like to see the baby and confirm that he/she is whatever name we were thinking, lol.
Also, DH does not help supply names, but he is very thoughtful about my lists :)
  • I love all the names. I'm also so impressed by those of you that have one's picked out already. With my DS we didn't really discuss much until after we found out gender and even then it was a discussion we just never spent much time on. Mainly because there wasn't much we came up with that we liked. We hadn't planned to tell anyone what we came up with anyways but it didn't matter because we didn't have anything when we went to the hospital. The night DS was born we came up with Samuel James (we knew the middle name would be James after my DH middle name and his dad's name). I love it. With this one, we aren't even talking about it until we find out gender again. We had such a difficult time coming up with a boys name that I am not sure what we are going to do if we need another one. We know regardless of gender the middle name will be Michael. That is my middle name and my dad's first name (do you see a theme?). I like the name Margaret Michael (nn Greta) but not sure if DH will go for it. Margaret was my Grandma's name. Good luck to everyone in your choosing!!

  • With my son, the only thing DH and I could agree on was that we couldn't agree on a name.  When we finally found it, we knew it was the name (well we knew two names, which would be first and which would be the middle name wasn't decided until DHL saw the baby for the first time).
Right now I like Prudence and Eleanor for a girl, middle name will be Rose. I like Jude and Ellis for a boy.
I have never been a fan of naming a baby before they are born. I like to go in with some option

It took 2 months for OH and I to unanimously agree "Austin" is no longer the boy name (plus he seems certain we're having a girl, no idea why). So now all the names are back on the table aghhh.

For some reason all the boy names we have are ultra-nordic, mythological, or old english in nature: Magnus, Henrik, Orion, Soren, Orson, Merlin and a couple of norm-y names scattered in: Calvin, Abel, Finn

Then girl names are all the freak over the place: Beatrix, Clementine, Zora, Audrey, Evelyn, Lark, Harriet, Lucienne, Ophelia, Olympia, Louisa, Lenore.

I'm just going to assume that in the next 6 months we'll grow to hate all of these names haha.
I know a family in the UK with a boy and girl. I love their names! - Octavia and Merlin.

@TinaBelcher my favorite girls name is Noelle but the hubby and my MIL are against it as a first name since it will sound too "Christmasy". I have the go ahead for it as a middle name if we have a girl though. The reason they think that? My last name is Nicholas...and my own due date was January 14th but I was born the day after Christmas instead so I wonder if this one will follow my footsteps and arrive right before Christmas since my due date is the 11th
My name is Noelle and my birthday is in January, and I have a Christmas middle name too lol and it wasn't intentionally Christmas. I say do it!! I get compliments on my name all the time. (And I don't particularly care for it lol)

  • We were team green last time and had a list of names before we went to the hospital and ended up not using any of them! My husband came up with DD first name (Marian) a couple hours after she was born and we added the middle name Blythe after my grandma. We're making a list again this time but who knows what will happen. We're still team green.

  • Tops girl names so far are Noelle, Layla, Olivia, or Naomi. Top boy names - so far we have Leo and we're still thinking of other options. We're having a hard time with boy names because the names we do like are already taken by friends or family.
  • Question for anyone - I always said if I had a daughter years ago before I even thought about kids, I wanted to name her Layla. So, my best friend's sister who used to be my friend and we haven't been friends for about 9 years had a daughter and named her Layla. Keep in mind that I never told anyone that I liked Layla and I said this way before my ex friend had her daughter. I still like Layla, but I feel some kind of way now because my ex friend named her daughter Layla and I'm still friends with her sister. Do you think it would be weird to have the same name especially when I used to be very close to the person?
  • Question! How do you ladies feel about knowing people with kids with the same name?

We haven't told a soul we are pregnant and don't intend to for awhile. There are two other women at work who are pregnant and it's a very small workplace. One of the women I despise because she is a high school brat in a 30 year old body. She announced her pregnancy at four weeks and today I noticed a mutual friend posted a comment on a photo from her baby shower saying they can't wait to welcome "_____." My heart sank because it was our girl pick.

What are the chances? It's funny in a way. I told my husband and he was like maybe it's more common than we think. It's not. It's a very old name. Anyway, I told him I don't care I would still like to use it. Our kids will never be in the same district or hang with each other, so it does bother me. I imagine it is going to bother her like crazy though.

Anyone else been in this situation? I really don't want to deal with the crap talk behind my back, but it an old family name and I'd like to stick with it.
  • @MrsCPALeslie, lol. I just noticed we posted practically the same question. My thoughts are that if you no longer associate with her it is no big deal.

    @SunsetSky @MrsCPALeslie

I think it's totally fine in both of these scenarios.  It's your baby and you should name him/her what you love.  My father has first and second cousins with the same name as him (I guess there wasn't a lot of creativity in our family years ago lol).  I think we put more emphasis on unique names nowadays than our parents and grandparents did.  If it bothers the other person that their child and yours will have the same name, then that's their hurdle to jump not yours.

Eta: thebump ate my last sentence.

  • Agree with PP, @sunsetsky and @MrsCPALeslie

although, I can say @sunsetsky, that would bother me too, especially if I didn't respect the person. At the end of the day, you and your family will be living with your son/daughter's name for much longer than you'll be at that particular job. I wouldn't let it influence you.
  • H and I haven't discussed it, but for a girl I like Josephine. For a boy, I was thinking maybe Jennings or Joel. Of course, we will both have to decide and love it.
  • @SunsetSky I know it's a tricky situation especially when you don't like the person or even if you like the person. I'm starting to agree with everyone else in that we need to choose the name we love. I'm not friends with that girl and she moved to another state and you don't like the girl at your work and you may not work with her forever. So, I'm keeping Layla in my top 2 names for girls. If we have our baby closer to Christmas, I'll probably go with Noelle.
  • @SunsetSky I am confused. Is the bratty 30 yr old the one who is planning to use the same name as you? Or is it the other co-worker who had the baby shower? Honestly in either situation I would go ahead and use the name. In the case of the bratty 30 yr old, it is likely that you will give birth first. If she tells you about her baby name choice, I would tell her directly that is the name you and DH have already decided upon and are planning to use. And of course, I am curious what the name is...??

  • @susykat77, the immature girl is the one who just had her baby shower. Same person. She is about 10 weeks ahead of me.

We like the name so unless we find better which I doubt we will she will have to deal. Unfortunately, it's a situation where we do a pretty rare thing and our husbands work together, so we likely we be stuck together forever. I am considering bidding to work with my husband and hopefully moving into a different building, and this situation makes me want to do it even more.
  • Declan Lee for a boy (Hubby's Irish roots and Lee is a family name on my side) and Magdalena Lynne for a girl (Lena for short, and Lynne is the female variant of lee. She'd be the fourth generation lol)
  • @SunsetSky I think you should use the name that you and your hubby like, regardless of anyone else.  My daughter is Adley Joe and her cousin is Hadley Jane (they're only 7 months apart).  Their dads are twins and their moms names are Laura and Lauryn.  We all had our hearts set on those names independent of each other and we wouldn't even think to ask each other to change the name they've fallen in love with! If it's what you and your hubby want - DO IT!!!

  • @SunsetSky I was also confused, but mostly because your coworker had a baby shower so early!  She couldn't be more than 20 weeks, right?
Anywho, I'm not sure what I'd do on the name.  It'd probably depend for me on if you'd think about the whole situation/her every time you said/heard the baby's name?  I think it would probably bother me, unfortunately.
  • On the topic of using a name that an acquaintance used: my husband's old college roommate that he's not close with anymore sent me a Facebook message to explain that their favorite name for their girl due this summer is the same as our daughters. It's an old fashioned name that is not common. I thought that was a nice gesture and told them not to worry. If they hadn't done that I would have been a little slighted honestly.

One of my favorite girls names was used by a high school acquaintance, not even a friend. I probably won't reach out to her if I choose that name because we were never friends. But I would if we were at all close.
  • @lindsladle15, she is 18 weeks I believe. It does seem very early to me, but I am a private person and a lot of things seem weird to me.

I personally feel like names are not unique and no person has any claim to them. She is just catty and will make a bigger deal out of it than it is. Not my problem. We live in a big city, so I imagine there are many people with this name.

I'm in agreement that names don't BELONG to people, so one should feel free to use whatever name they want. If it annoys someone, that's their problem to deal with it.

I have always loved coming up with names - ever since I was a little girl.  It's much more difficult when I know we actually have to name TWO human beings in a few months, lol.  For boys, we are liking Edgar Nash and Vincent Isaiah. I am at a loss for girls names.  DH likes Layla, but it's not my favorite, so we may have found middle ground with Lydia.  Other than that, I'm lost with girls.  DH's family is Mexican, so we want to make sure that whatever names we pick are easy to pronounce in Spanish and English, though we tend to agree more on English names.

  • We have Everly Alexis picked out for a girl, and I'm thinking Everett Alexander or Everett Anthony. (My grandma is Eva, and grandpa is Antonio) I like the idea of this baby being named fully after my grand parents since our girl is named after hubby's grandparents....only seems fair. Having a tough time coming up with boys names though, all my family names are ridiculously Italian...like I'm not naming my probably ginger baby Gino...haha just doesn't work for me
  • Husband and I go back and forth a lot and I'm sure we will continue to do so. I'm not stressing over the names until we know the sex but just finding myself paying more attention to names whenever I meet someone or read names somewhere. For a girl, we've talked about Everly, Grace, and Kennedy. For a boy, Jackson Dade or Jackson Hurley.

  • Ava or Avery for a girl.  My husband is dead set on having a Jr., so it will be Thomas David, but we will call him Tommy while he is young.  Not my favorite but I got to pick our daughter's name the first time around to honor my grandmother.
  • Vivi20Vivi20 member
The husband is insistent that this baby is a boy, so he isn't too keen on even really considering girl names. But, with that said, I think we may have finalized a girl name.
Katerina. We'll call her Katya for short.
But I still don't know about spelling? Either Katerina or Katarina.

@EH112212 I LOVE the name Ephraim. Biblically, Ephraim is the brother of Hiram (which is our current boy name), so we might end up with an Ephraim one day!

I wanted Everett for a boy name, and my husband shot it down too.
  • I need a boy name again! It was SO hard to come up with one the first time around. I can't figure out one that I remotely like...
  • @BrennansMom2012 I love so many nerdy boys names (after literary or movie characters or genre movie writers/ directors...)
Sutton, Alton, Ellis, Silas are probably my top 4
  • Team Green so we're brainstorming on both sides.  We're having a much easier time with girl names and struggling with boy names.  We both like traditional, classic names, but nothing that is too popular.  For girls, I feel like we've found several names that fit the bill.  For boys, almost anything classic I find to be popular and common, and therefore, I don't like it as much.
  • We have always had several girl names down to plan for several daughters. We struggle with boy names. This is baby 3 and our 3rd boy haha. Go figure
Baby Boy 3 is on the way!
