Re: Breastfeeding Questions/Support/Learnings Go Here

  • Has anyone developed red moles on their breasts since starting breastfeeding? This isn't a picture of mine btw, just one I found on the Internet, one that is similar to the ones I have. Wondering if I should be concerned? There is a history of breast cancer in my family.

I have noticed a couple as well, but was concerned because I already had one that looked like that.

I have developed blisters on both nipples, probably from rubbing against baby's mouth while feeding him. Called my doctor, but all they suggested was working more on the latch. I am in pain :( but I want to keep breastfeeding.

    Blisters are very common.
Try using your own milk to run into them. Hand express it out after you feed the baby. Then let them air dry with nothing touching them.
You can use a nipple shield for a while to reduce friction.
Also play around with different holds and positions while feeding- that'll help change up where their mouth rubs.

They'll get better though. Your nipples will get used to it.

I wouldn't be concerned. Looks like broken blood vessels to me.
  • LO is 3.5 weeks old, and bc of latch issues I split breastfeeding and pumping. I have been noticing that after pumping, my nipples stay swollen and painful for several hours. It makes it difficult to pump for nurse for the rest of the day. I use lanolin after every feeding, I have been using bigger flanges with the pump, I use ice and warm compresses... Nothing seems to help. To make matters worse, I now have mastitis on one side so feeding more frequently is even more painful. Has anyone experienced something like this before? Any advice?

This is exactly what happened to me, including the mastitis. I actually needed smaller flanges though I thought I needed bigger ones. I looked at the size guide and it said if you notice rubbing against the sides then it's too small. Well it was definitely rubbing and 3 x the size after pumping. BUT I finally figured out that it wasn't my nipple rubbing but it was actually pulling in my areola and breast tissue and that's what was rubbing. Now I ordered the smaller flanges and it only pulls in my actual nipple. It's much better, empties my breast better (good for clogged ducts ) and I pump in less time on lower suction. But best of all...no more swollen sore nipples! Look into getting the correct fit for your nipple size (not breast size, nipple size) hope your solution is as simple as mine. Good luck!
  • Does anyone use a nipple shield? That's the only way to get our LO to nurse easily. The LC at our hospital said I had flat nipples so it's hard for her to latch. I'm supposed to use it the first ten minutes then try it without. Just curious if anyone else has to do this. And as a FTM I had no clue BF would be so hard. We are experiencing our first cluster feed and it's so intense!

I use the nipple shield and it's been a lifesaver. One nipple is more flat than the other but I use it for both. It saves me from getting blistered and cracked. I don't really try it without anymore because my son sucks so hard it's too painful without some sort of buffer.
  • DD is 2 weeks tomorrow I'm EBF, and her poops alternate between green and yellow. Finding mixed messages on dr Google. Anyone else? We have an appt tomorrow should I be overly concerned?

My LO's poop's have been green all day today! She's also fussing a lot more than usual when nursing. Like pulling off then getting mad and having a hard time latching back on. This is very unusual and I wonder if my milk flow is too fast/too much foremilk.

Let us know what your doctor says - our next appointment isn't until Monday but if her poops continue to be green tomorrow I may call.

Went to the doc today, she said green and yellow poop is nothing to worry about, as long as our daughter is feeling content, eating regularly and producing adequate dirty diapers. She also have us a website that would provide better answers than dr Google.

Hope this helps Yal as well!

Thanks for updating! I called and talked with the nurse and she said the same thing as your doctor. Glad to know our LOs are ok!

I found with a quick Google search that it's fairly common for breasts and/or underarms to itch while nursing...  Anybody else here dealing with this, and if so, have you found anything to calm it?

Me!! Mine is more so breast/nipples and I was terrified of getting thrush. I have been using nipple cream like crazy (my favs are mama Mio and bamboobies) and changing out nursing pads quite often to combat dryness. My entire body feels dry though so I'm not surprised.

Yes! I struggled with this in a HUGE way when we first started. At five weeks it's substantially better for me but still will happen from time to time. The only real relief for me is sensory distraction. I'll grab underneath and cup my breast or use a hot pack (lasinoh makes one that you can use while feeding, you just have to be careful with baby). I tried a ice pack before feeding but I was sure I was plenty full first that absolutely helped but then made it twice as worse when the cold wore off.

Yes! So itchy! No idea how to calm it, I just itch it. My hands are already full with LO.

I broke out in a rash on my breasts when nursing DS, very ichy. I was alergic to the disposal nursing pads. I changed to the washable nursing pads and no more problems.

  • Hello PP emotions. Today was a tough day. After LO nursed without the nipple shield for two feedings two hours apart this morning (which I was really excited about) She refused to latch. Since it was nearing 4 hours since her last feed, I started to get worried. I found out our insurance covers lactation consultants 100% so I started calling around to make an appointment. The first lady I talked to was like "you haven't fed your baby in 4 hours?!" And I told her I had tried several times but she won't take it. Then she gives me the golden advice that "It's not good if your baby doesn't eat" I promptly came up with an excuse to get off the phone with that witch and call a much nicer lady. Who had to hear me cry since the other lady was so mean. We have an appointment with the LC tomorrow to see what we can do. I'm just feeling so discouraged. She won't latch so I'm pumping every two hours and feeding her from a bottle. She just seems so cranky and I'm only producing about .5-.75 oz per session and she drinks it so fast. I'm trying to make myself feel better by saying that amount is all she would be getting if she were latching but it's tough. I broke down to DH and said I don't feel like I'm doing a good job. I just didn't know it would be so hard. I'm an anxious type A person anyways so I think I'm stressing too much about when she pees/poops and when she eats. We also see the pedi tomorrow so that's good. And at the hospital she had only lost 6% of her body weight, so hopefully tomorrow shows good news. Any words of advice or encouragement are welcome. I am just feeling kind of lost and like I have no clue what I'm doing :(

We went through the exact same thing one day and I will tell you, it's not fun and it does get better! Our dog ate my nipple shield one morning and LO wouldn't latch on his own, so we went in to urgent care, luckily there was a LC over at the hospital who helped us out. I cried for an hour in her office about how I felt like a failure. By the time we left he was back in action and I was good to go. Take every advantage of the LC's you can! Good luck mama, I hope it gets better soon!

Wow, I'm sorry you had to deal with that first LC. She needs a cooter punch; what she said was completely uncalled for.

Sounds like you're going down the right road with meeting with an LC and having your pedi appointment tomorrow. You're doing a great job mama and you'll get through this!! I completely know how you're feeling as my LO will scream and unlatch when she's tired and I feel like I can't even feed her and that I'm a failure. You're not alone and just remember you're doing everything you can. You got this!!
  • Glad I'm not the only one with a kiddo that unlatches and screams. Not sure what's happen but Zeke has been doing this pretty much all week. He'll be eating perfectly fine then all of a sudden he's unlatched and screaming like its the end of the world. He's also going for marathon eating sessions. We've been awake for 3 hours now and he won't stop eating (except to pull himself off and scream). He's been doing it both during the day and at night. My diet hasn't changed so I don't think it's a food sensitivity. I'm hoping he's just in a growth spurt and this will end soon. I don't know how much more of this I can take... Especially these hours long feeding sessions. I'm so tired.
  • Thank you ladies, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. It's just so much harder than I imagined. "Tickle their nose, when they open their mouth latch and you're good." Ha! For the last 4 feelings I have been pumping and giving her a bottle, and I've been so much less stressed. I'm going to talk to the LC but I wonder if this option is the best for me. LO seems so much more content, I'm not a frazzled mess and I know she's eating. DH seems to like this method so far too. We actually got some decent sleep for the first time since she's been home and that's a plus too. I'm glad I'm not on this roller coaster alone. Will update later after LC and Pedi appointment. Once again, thank you for the kind words. I've realized we just need to do what works for us.

I'm glad you're feeling better! I know it's tough I was in the same position a few weeks ago, LO wouldn't latch and just screamed at me then pushed my boob away like it was poison! We have been pumping and bottle feeding since then, still trying to latch but not getting too upset when he doesn't want to. It took me a while but once I was feeling ok with the bottle (I really wanted to BF and couldn't understand why it wasn't working, our LC just said that my LO hadn't mastered it yet and to keep trying but to remember the most important thing is to feed the baby it doesn't matter how!) things have gotten a lot better in our house! Keep going and trust in yourself, you will do what's right for you and for your baby, you got this! I think it's great that you've made appointments to see a LC they might have some tips/tricks.

As for the first LC to spoke to shame on her for making you feel that way! I get that baby needs to eat like every 2 hrs but sometimes they don't and that's ok, I mean as long as they are gaining weight and have enough dirty diapers then I think it's Ok if they skip a meal every once in a while, I mean don't do it intentionally but sometimes my LO goes longer than 2 hrs between feedings (due to naps or sleeping at night, I've always got a bottle close at hand though) and he did great at his pedo appt...you got this!
  • Any of you ladies get a cramp/sharp ache right near their armpit? My right side gets this almost every time I nurse

I got them in a few spots last time. Haven't had any this time yet. I think it's just the milk glands and things moving through there. Nothing concerning.
  • Do you let your LO hang out sleeping on the nipple?
When did you all stop getting bf cramps? Mine get real uncomfortable at times, 5 days pp.

Took me about a month for the cramping to completely stop. The last 2 weeks or so was very sporadic when it would happen. For me, when DD falls asleep I pull her off. If she fusses I put her back, if not then off she stays.
  • Since I have a nipple shield, I let him fall asleep on the nipple because if I pull him off, he will wake up. Eventually he gets himself off my nipple by himself and he's much more likely to stay asleep then.

But if I didn't have the shield I would pull him off because the lack of sucking while still having suction is hard on your nipple
  • Hey all. Recently, my nipples have been KILLING me! I think it's from Oliver cluster feeding so much. They are not dry or chapped, just very sore. Anyone have any suggestions for soothing?

Hand express your own milk onto them and rub it in. Then let them air dry, leaving your shirt off for 5-10 mins.
Lanolin helps too. As does earth mama angle baby nipple cream. But my own milk seems to work the best.
  • Yes, I use earth momma angel baby. It makes amazing lip balm too :) I use my own milk a couple times a day as well

  • Help! I'm pretty sure I have an oversupply of breast milk. No matter how much I pump or feed my baby my boobs are constantly engorged and leaking. It's like I can never empty them. I tried only pumping what the baby need but I still keep producing way too much. Does anyone know how I can decrease my supply? I'm pretty miserable here my boobs hurt way too bad! :(

Are you pumping in addition to breast feeding? Stop pumping. You will never fully empty your breasts. And by pumping and BFing you're increasing your supply.
If you're just pumping then spread out the sessions so you're doing it less often.
If you're BFing, stop pumping for a week or 2 and just feed on demand. You'll regulate.
  • It really kills me that I was pushed into supplementing with formula. As time goes on Cooper wants more and more formula. I still put him to the breast at every feeding but he never seems to get enough. I pump at least 4 times a day and I'm lucky if I get 2oz total for the whole day.

I just keep beating myself up over this. I get so jealous reading about women who have an over supply. I want to have that problem so bad.

I know I shouldn't care but it just really sucks :(

Is there ANY chance of me being able to EBF? I'm gonna go to a LLL meeting on Thursday to hopefully get some guidance.

I would put him to the breast between feedings and let him use you as a paci. This will put in another order for milk so to speak. Other than that you could try eating oatmeal and drinking Mother's Milk tea.
  • Does anyone else's LO vomit after taking the vitamin D supplement? Jacob's pediatrician knows and wanted us to try a few more times, but it's consistent every single time. Medicine, Breastmilk, vomit, and then more nursing. I've been BFing for over an hour now. I could try BFing first and then giving him the medicine first but I'm scared to.

    Any suggestions or similar experiences?

They always made my daughter gag, not actually puke though. We stopped using them pretty quickly. Haven't started them this time yet because they were such a pain last time.

Ugh frustrating that two are causing the same issue. The one I use is called baby Ddrops. Hope this helps.
  • I have been feeding her about every three hours, sometimes more frequently, and usually just feed on one side because I have a lot of supply and she often gets full from one side. The problem is, my other side gets really full and painful before she's ready to eat again. I've been hand-expressing from the other side to try and relieve the pressure, but it doesn't help a lot. Do I just wait for my supply to normalize? I'm 12 days PP. Or should I be feeding for shorter times on both sides for every feed? I'm worried that since I produce so much milk that she will get all foremilk if I don't feed her for long enough on one side.

My LC suggested I take a large amount of vitamin D instead of making the baby take it. That way if I take a large amount, enough will pass through to the baby. I have to admit, I haven't been doing it... I haven't even been remembering to take my prenatals so....
