Feeling kicks thread

Thought we'd make one big kicks thread.

It's normal not to feel them til later. Even if you're thin. Even if you're not a FTM.

Average range is 15-25 weeks. That means even after 25 weeks, it's still not a bad thing, just later end of normal range.

It's typically not necessary to court kicks til 28 weeks/third tri (obviously unless otherwise advised by dr.)

Got any other questions or comments or just wanna share an awesome kick story? Post it here!

  • I didn't feel kicks til 21/22 weeks with DS and even then they were super mild and infrequent to begin with. I'm relatively thin ish (I have, errrr had, a small waist), so my dr kept telling me id feel him early. Nope!

I'm 15w4d and have felt nothing besides muscle twinges and BH. I don't expect to feel this one til 20 ish weeks or later. When it happens it'll happen.

  • Yeah, I'm not too worried about it right now. I more so commented on the thread for the fact that I originally thought this was the third kick thread to be posted but then I realized, it has a different purpose. :)

  • Hi, I'm 19weeks today an have been feeling baby moving for about 2 weeks now, my partner has even felt it! It's only in the evenings when I've relaxed after work but its so strange! I'm a first time Mom, is it normal to feel movement 'down there' when standing this early on?

    Thanks! ☺️
  • So glad to hear I am not the only one feeling the BH so soon. I was a bit nervous about it because I didn't feel them with Dd until the last few weeks.

I am 17 weeks and just starting to feel kicks.

I thought STMs were supposed to feel 'em earlier, but I just started feeling occasional distinct movement during week 18... almost to the day the same time as when I felt them with DD.

  • What's BH?

Nothing yet, I don't think. FTM at 18 weeks.

  • Almost 19 weeks here and def feel them every now and then (STM).  Not super strong and not enough to feel on the outside.  Usually when I'm sitting and can feel my pants against my belly.  Fun times!  Can't believe it's almost half way!

Well, I'm certainly getting slightly concerned about the strength of this LO...! That is pretty much sarcasm. I could feel DD at 18 weeks exactly, DH felt her for the first time exactly one week later. I started feeling this LO at 13.5 weeks, I feel her every day a few times a day, confirmed when I could see her kicking and feel it at the same time last week at my anatomy scan. Also found out that I have an anterior placenta...so given that DD has never stopped moving since I first felt her in utero at 18 weeks, and I can feel this one so early and frequently with an anterior placenta...I think I'm in for it with another mover and shaker! :)

  • What do BH even feel like? FTM - so I have no idea!

I think that maybe I possibly might have felt flutters last week... almost felt like getting tickled from the inside... which just sounds creepy! But nothing since... Going to ask about placenta placement at my A/S in a few weeks (never even knew to ask previously) because my mom said she was anterior with all of us and didn't feel early movement, so I'm wondering if I'm the same way.
  • With DD I felt first kicks 18w with anterior placenta. With this LO I started feeling occasional movement at 15.5 weeks. I pretty much feel light kicks everyday. I'm not feeling anything on the outside yet. I also have anterior placenta with this little guy
  • @allaire314 BH can be felt differently, by different women at different points on pregnancy, and some women don't notice them at all. but generally, early on they are a painless tightening feeling in the uterus. It gets hard and then relaxes. As the pregnancy progresses, they may become stronger and possibly painful; toward the end, even stm+ can question whether they're BH or "real" contractions.

I've had them all the sudden and multiple times a day since early week 18 and never once felt them with DD (she came at 38w5). I think its just one of the joys of ST+, you're that much more aware of the uterus and what different contractions feel like. Not looking forward to having them for 20+ weeks!

With DD I could differentiate gas from flutters around 17 weeks and DH felt her at 21/22. With this one I could feel the flutters around 15 weeks and DH felt the first kick from outside this week (19). We've got a strong one coming apparently :)

  • Lots and lots of flutters starting about 18 weeks. But I really only feel them when I am sitting really still.

    I can't wait for H to feel them :)
  • For whoever asked (don't fell like quote boxing), yes it's normal to feel movement at your stage being a first time mom.

For anybody who said they don't feel them yet, just remember that the normal range is up to 25 weeks, and even after that doesn't necessarily indicate a problem (but def speak to your doc at that point).

For me Braxton hicks feel like your whole stomach (well uterus part so wherever your fundal height ends) gets hard without you controlling it. It feels hard to the touch. It doesn't hurt, just feels tight. When my husband asked I said it's like a boner for your stomach. Just gets hard.

Later in when baby is bigger it can be hard to tell if you're having a BH or if the baby is just pressing part of their body (butt, head, back, etc) uo against you and making it hard. I remember I'd feel one side of my belly and then have to feel the other or feel all around to see if my whole abdomen was hard (BH), or just part of it where DS was pressing up.

  • After having anterior placentas the last two pregnancies, and not feeling movement until 20 weeks, I was excited to find that it's at the top this time and I started feeling kicks at 15 weeks with DH being able to feel at 16.

I was surprised it started out kicks and not flutters. He's definitely not at a point that I can count them or time them yet, but I feel him quite a few times a day.

  • This is my first baby and I'm definitely not "thin". However, I'm 17w3d and I swear I've been feeling these flutters for about a week. They've been consistent, happening a few times a day and are definitely more noticeable when I'm sitting or lying still so I can't even believe that gas or spasms could be this consistent.

However, since I have no experience with the sensations, I feel hesitant to even say this is the real thing. My midwife didn't seem surprised that I was feeling them already, so then I'm right back to wondering if this it could be happening this early...
  • I first started feeling them at 17 weeks when my bump went from zero to massive over the course of 6 hours. Now I know what those feelings were as I get them all the time now I've hit 18 weeks. I would liken them to popcorn popping or bubbles popping, usually when I'm sat down or relaxed in bed.
  • Hey! I'm 18 weeks and I started feeling movements a week ago. But last night and today my hubby was able to feel the kicks too! It's so amazing! I thought the same as you and didn't think hubby would be able to feel so early. Turns out they can! It's amazing right?

I am only 15.5, STM, but just started feeling flutters and movement this weekend, and it's been pretty consistent since. So exciting! Especially because I didn't feel anything till about 20 weeks with DD. I feel like this one is already a bigger mover than she was (except it's funny because after our last ultrasound we joked that this one was going to be the complete opposite (a lazy stoner perhaps?) than our super driven DD as it must have been napping and didn't really move much until we really started messing with it by the end).

Edited because it cut me off.
  • So it was weird, I am STM, I started feeling movement around 15/16 weeks those first little flutters.  Then last week 17/18 weeks, I was definitely feeling some good kicks and they were all relatively in the same spot.  However I have not felt anything since probably Friday.  Kind of wondering what the baby is doing in there and if she changed position or the placenta has moved and is blocking.

On a side note, had a horrible cough/cold last week too, so maybe she is super exhausted from not being able to sleep through all my crazy coughing and blowing nose fits.  And of course she could have been moving during this time and I never would have felt her anyways.  Fun times being a mom!
  • I feel them every now and then. Even then I have to second guess whether if it's my bowels or actual kicks. Come to think of it, I don't believe I've ever felt bowels move and I never really got any internal twitches before so they must be kicks. I'm 16 weeks at the moment and my doctor said I "could" start feeling kicks but it's okay if I don't until later.

My last baby had the placenta in front, or anterior placenta so I didn't feel kicks until much later, about mid 20 something weeks.

Those more knowledgeable, let me know if I'm wrong, but I don't think the placenta can move locations. It implants into the uterus I believe...

  • @imrachellea I was actually researching this yesterday because I was curious. From what I've read, the placenta cannot actually move because it's implanted. It can just shift higher as the uterus grows and expands.

That's what that is! Yeah I've totally had BH all over the place! No real kicks to mention though. Still early, not worried.
  • I've had what I can only describe as 'little prods' on either the left or right side slightly below my belly button.
At first I wasn't sure if it was a muscle twitch or ligament spasm or something but they've been happening sporadically for the last couple of weeks - I'm 19 weeks now.

Problem is I often have my stomach turning and muscles twitching so I'm not sure whether to be excited at this or not, and I have an anterior placenta...anyone had experience of this type of possible baby movement?
  • I didn't know that I was having BH the past week or two! So that's what all of the random tightening/hardening is. Good to know! I didn't realize they could start this early. I wasn't exactly worried because it's been painless, but certainly curious.
  • I haven't been feeling the flutters or kicks but more of that rolling feeling you get towards the end. They said this kid is a big one , so maybe, but seriously I highly doubt he's big enough for me to get that feeling yet.
  • Is it too early to feel hiccups? I've been feeling movement every now and then for two weeks, and today I felt weird twitching movement every few seconds in the same spot that I've felt the baby moving before.
  • I never felt hiccups with ds!!! Or maybe I did and I didn't know? What does it even feel like?

  • I'm a FTM, so I'm not really sure what hiccups feel like. What I felt was a repeated large twitch every few seconds for a few minutes. I think it was way too regularly spaced for it to just be kicks, and it felt like a large portion of the baby was moving. Basically it felt like the baby was hiccuping, but I was under the impression I shouldn't be feeling hiccups for quite a while. It was a very weird and new feeling.
  • Last night at dinner I drank some really cold lemonade and not long after felt that "popcorn popping"...it was really funny!
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @nachosandpeaches Your post about the BH was so incredibly helpful, thank you! I didn't even know that it was a possibility to happen this early. I thought that it was the baby pushing up on my belly because of the pressure. Now there have been times where my whole stomach feels tight, and those where it is really just on one side. Do you know if it's common to get the BH more commonly after "doing the deed"?
