Is it ok to do your own babyshower instead of having a family member/friend throw you one?

  • @jenspeake I will choose pie over cake every time. EVERY TIME.

A good friend of mine brought me a bottle of red wine from Spain. Spanish wine is my favorite and I cannot wait until I can open it and drink, drink, drink.

  • @lnord7 I like more of the cakey part than the icing.  I have a sister that loves icing so whenever there is cake I take all my frosting off and give it to her....so we end up splitting a piece.  I'm sure we could have a whole frosting debate now.  Old school or whipped?  I prefer the whipped since I'm not a frosting lover!

Right there with you, sister. My post-delivery plan is a bottle of red wine and a cold cut combo from Subway. 'Cause I'm klassy.

I also realize I probably shouldn't drink the whole bottle since I plan to breastfeed, but don't ruin my fantasy, okay?

I thought sharing meant caring? I'm sure baby would love the wine.

  • I go to bed and try to sleep for a few hours and this is what I miss? Forget sleep, I'm Bumping 24/7 from now on. I like pie and cake equally. And they had both at my FIL's 60th birthday party yesterday, but I didn't get even a BITE of pie because I had a two year old to deal with, who decided he'd had enough and melted down right as the cake was being served. I just wanted a bite, since I'm not really supposed to be eating sugar. And my MIL is a really good cook! My FIL is also the least gift-grabby person I've ever met so he deserved a wonderful birthday celebration. As for the Mac vs. PC debate, I'm all Apple all the time. I am the furthest thing from a tech nerd, so I'll let you guys battle that out in your own. But I've owned 3 computers in my day, two of which I actually bought for myself. The first, my MacBook, which I bought after my sisters raved about theirs . . . I loved my MacBook. It was the bottom of the line 13-in and still cost over $1,000, so I agree that Apple stuff ha overpriced . . . But that thing lasted me over 4 years, travelled with me to Mexico and Kenya and survived my numerous clumsy moments of dropping it. I killed it when I accidentally knocked my Blue Moon onto the keyboard . . . Apple wanted $750 to fix it. How rude. So DH and I decided we'd use some of our tax return that year to get me a new laptop, and figured if we're going to spend $750, it might as well be new. We bought an HP. Biggest mistake ever. That computer was NEVER easy to use like my Mac, and 13 months to the day after we bought it, it crashed. I took it to Best Buy it Geek Squad to take a look. And they said if was a motherboard failure, and admitted that the motherboard as defective. But since it was out of warranty (conveniently), it would cost hundreds to fix it, on too of spending $35 just to ship it out. Had I spent my money on fixing my MacBook, I'd have one working laptop instead of two dead ones laying around my house. So sorry but I think Macs are better. Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to eat a German chocolate cake or a good old fashioned apple pie after DD is born. Maybe one of each?
HP, well there's your problem. Theyre not exactly a good or reliable brand at all, and their parts dont even fit well with one another. I bought my laptop back in 2006, a toshiba for €700, and she still runs! I expanded the ram at one point, because I happened to have it laying around, but other than that and some maintenance on the software side (reinstalling the OS, something all systems should get done once in a while), nothing has ever been fixed on it. HP however, well, long story short: if DH were to bring home any hp products ever he'd be sleeping in the car :\">

As far as fixing goes, a desktop will always be easiest since you can just slide them open and take parts out. My pc had a faulty cpu a year back, intel shipped us a new one cause warranty, and i put it in myself, no cost there at all :) a mac isnt as easy to fix because of their encasing (same issue as a lot of laptops have, though that can be done).

For the record, a motherboard plus the labor of replacung that in a laptop is indeed hundreds. Especially since a faulty mobo can break other parts and requires the entire laptop to be disassembled. A keyboard in a laptop however, the keyboard is cheap and easy to get to, id estimate labor to be 15 minutes tops. Also, macs use the same parts as pcs, but more limited. Amd gfx cards and intel cpus/intel based mobos. They can fail just as easily, and do so just as often on average. Macs dont have fancy special parts in them like a lot of consumers seem to believe. It's a bit like taking your everyday microwave and locking it in a box so you can only access the front of it. Its still the same old microwave on the inside, no one just sees it. Weird analogy is weird, I didnt sleep, forgive me.
Did you know that if you look at the parts that are in a specific mac, you can just order those, assemble them, save half your money and create what is called a hackintosh by loading macOS after fiddling with the bios a little? Its basically a cheap mac thats the same in every way except for the half eaten apple that comes as a logo and is much easier to fix.

I'd also recommend against bringing anything into best buy. We were there a month or so ago and the dude asked me about my monitor since that'd affect what type of gfx card I could get. Uhm, no, thats not how that works. Any store like that generally has non-trained or barely trained employees handle such things. Mostly they dont know what they are talking about. Any actual repair shop would be better. Had I listered to Mikro (where i got my Toshiba) they'd have told me years ago that it was broken when I brought it with me when my grandfather needed something backed up. (He doesnt listen and swears going there is the best thing). My laptop wouldnt boot, and they wanted to toss it right there. So I plugged in the charger. Idiots, seriously. =)) You should've seen the look on that mans face, priceless.

I vote both, btw, and now want some pie. Apple pie is SO DARN GOOD. =P~

Jimmy Johns and a pumpkin spice latte on my way home from the hospital, a Venti please!

Thoughts on where I can get cake at 7:30 am? My mom and dad are getting their colonoscopies done at the same time tomorrow. Romantic I know. I need to leave the house by 5:45 am to get them to the hospital (which is 5 min from my house) by 7:30 am. Then I need to keep myself busy until they are done and then drive them back home and make sure they are good before I go home and try to sleep. I seriously need something sweet and amazing. Half caff coffee just doesn't do it for me anymore. When does Starbucks start selling pumpkin drinks because I seriously want one!

    @RainNFyre you are my hero!

Oh and since this is a baby shower thread, I do have one thing that makes me crazy and I don't know where the etiquette falls with this one. I never get a an invitation to my own showers! This happened with the wedding too. The only person who ever remembers to send me an invite is my friend. Both times I had to call my aunt and MIL to ask what time the showers were and where they were at. Is that normal not to send the guest of honor an invite? If so then OK no big deal, but at least tell me when and where!
  • That's what I wanted! Just a keepsake. Well everyone sent me one after I said something, but still it's like at least tell me the time!
  • I actually just had some cake with my lunch - butter yellow with chocolate frosting.

But I can't wait to have some Cupcake Moscato, and it's killing me to not get to have some of the hard cider & whatnot that my husband bought last weekend.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Oh I'm very much looking forward to drinking pumpkin beer

I LOL'd that you had ram just lying around. Reminded me of my college BF and his apartment-mates, who were all comp sci majors. They had all sorts of computer components just lying around their place.

  • @MamaOwl15 Haha xD Yeahh, my DH is a comp sci major and I out-do him in the random parts department. Whenever I toss out a pc, I salvage what I can from it so I end up with boxes and boxes filled with stuff. The ram in question came from my friends laptop. His ex tossed it out of the upstairs window into a paddling pool (dont ask..) and the ram was pretty much the only thing salvageable from it. Sooo win for me ;) My previous pc was actually free because I just salvaged parts from machines other people threw out. It ended up being a pretty high end machine for a few years, but I didnt pay a penny  <:-P

  • Update: Just sent DH into Kopp's for a watermelon milkshake. Lunch was delicious.
  • Ugh. I want to eat all of the cakes and pies and other goodies, but this child has compressed my stomach into the size of a thimble apparently. There is no room. This is torture.
  • I actually just had some cake with my lunch - butter yellow with chocolate frosting.

You haven't lived until you've had rum cupcakes!

  • @adriennerose80 -- wanna regroup after our respective deliveries and go to a bottomless booze brunch in NYC? I'm talking, real classy like. Chelsea? Soho? Hell's Kitchen? You pick. It's a date.

I remember going to a place in NYC for brunch near the highline that had all you can drink mimosas and bloody Mary's. It was awesome

me too ..name the time and place i am soooo there!!!!!

  • Simply excepting gifts doesn't make you greedy, anticipating them is in my opinion. I understand registering for gifts that you may need but flat out asking someone to buy you breast pump is a bit much. If family and fiends want to then fine. As far as my culture/family, I'm American and raised in the country. Baby showers in our family are about traditions and being their to support the mother to be. We believe in the whole "it takes a village" upbringing. My first baby shower gifts consisted of food, offers to babysit, and the simple things like a blanket my grandmother made for me as a baby. Second baby shower was the same. Both my showers were about surrounding each other with love so excuse me for not being a materialistic person. My only opinion is that it shouldn't be frowned upon to because you want to throw your own shower. At the end of the day, I don't expect people to understand my opinion and could care less about how you feel about it. I was jut simply answering the question.
  • @DeeGreer save your martini for our group's boozy brunch. Since you are now my role model for all things PARTY, I expect you to be there.
