Re: Baby Names

  • DH and I haven't agreed completely on any yet. But for a boy I like Theo, Ezra, Kayden and Beckett. For girls I like Elle, Gianna, and Quinn. Any thoughts?:)

Theo is cute, would it be Theodore?

Love Quinn for a girl but my dad has two friends with Quinn boys.
  • @wisco29 - that's why I don't like the name Quinn. It's too ambiguous/gender neutral for me.

I like the name Winter for a girl but am a little worried it's too weird. I don't want it to sound like I'm trying to be a hippie. What do you all think? I also love Aria and DH loves Chloe. Our boy would be named after my husband (he'd be generation#5 with the name so DH doesn't want to break tradition)
Not a fan of Winter. It reminds me of the dolphin. Aria and Chloe are both nice.
I've also been considering Winter, "Winnie", for a little girl.  My husband is still on the fence.  I'm not a huge fan of traditional names.

  • I'm kinda surprised a few of us are into Winter. I didn't think it'd be all that popular, but we want to use it as a middle name if we have a girl. It'll be Gwynevere Winter.

For a boy, we're not decided on first name. Middle name will be my fiance's father's name, Timothy.

Yay Winter! I love it and it has my husband's and mom's approval so I think we're settled... Not that we "need" my moms approval but we're really close and I'd hate if she hated the name I chose. We are thinking Winter with Violet as the middle name.

  • We didn't have a hard time coming up with names and we both love them. For a girl Madeline and for a boy Benjamin.
  • Karleigh (Family spelling not exactly loving it) Renee for a girl and we have no idea for another boy.

If you don't love it but want to use it for sentimental value, I say middle name it. People will definitely misspell it. :(

Winter Violet is a beautiful name! I am glad to not be the only one wanting to use Winter. :)
  • River for a girl:
    Too hippie? Too masculine?
My husband is SUPER picky when it comes to names and for some reason this is one of the few that neither of us hated.
    Thoughts?

I know a little River and she's super awesome. I like it!

It's NMS but I nice name. Personally, I like it better on girls because it sounds more pretty than masculine.

@egraves4 I remember feeling that way briefly when I was pregnant with my son. Then I realized that unless I gave him some crazy you-neek name it wouldn't make a difference.
I don't typically like sharing the names with family or friends until we are pretty sure. Too many opinions and someone always seems offended if you don't take their advice.

@g8trkim and @strlitemiss thanks for your thoughts
    :)

Edited because I hit post before I was finished.

Am I the only one who is scared to say what names we are thinking for fear someone will steal it?

Or maybe I'm thinking too highly of myself that I can pick out a name other people would actually want.

And maybe I'm strange for thinking it matters if someone clear across the country has the same name as my child.

I told my cousins girlfriend our name for our next boy (first and middle) and the very personal reasons behind it and she went and named her baby that because "it was a nice name and you weren't pregnant so I didn't think it mattered".

Wow, that is pretty terrible. I couldn't imagine doing that to someone. Especially because the name has personal meaning.

  • @strlitemiss That's insane! I know it shouldn't be a worry but there's something so special about the names I picked out. I would feel so incredibly awkward if someone I knew took the names I had chosen. Our girl name was his grandmother's name and isn't necessarily one that is popular now a days but I would be livid if that happened.

@lauren0571 That is absolutely true. I have found that a name I picked for the boy sounds "classy" to some, yet "feminine" to others.

  • I thought DD's name was special until someone at her daycare in the same age range had her exact name. Same first and last name.

For this little tyke. No clue. I'm too afraid to think of names yet. Once we get the next ultra sound down....maybe I'll start believing this guy/gal might stick.
  • Years and years ago my sister and I had a random conversation about baby names, she was 17 and I didn't give any thought to the name I loved being taken by her as I am 5 years older. Fast forward 6 months and she gets knocked up from a one night stand and calls her girl my name I'd told her I loved. Pisses me off to no end all the time!
  • I love the name Winter. Sadly, our last name starts with a W and I just can't do the alliteration. Same story for Willa.

Also, I'd never heard of River for a girl but it's really pretty and I far prefer it for a girl.

We're not telling anyone we actually know our names mostly because I don't want anyone's opinion to sway us. We love them, and that's what counts.

  • @Miss Lilac Our girl's name starts with an N, ends with an N, and our last name starts with N lol. But it was his grandmother's name so I'm allowing it!

I think it can work! Winter has too many of the same letters, whereas Willa would probably work. DH isn't into it though.

P.S. I feel like I'm on Wheel of Fortune trying to figure out the first name now!!

Wow, that's terrible! I have liked several names over the years and never used them bc they were either already taken or would be taken. I'm sorry that happened to you, id be pissed.

  • I don't remember if I posted this
Our boy name is 80% official, I say 80 because I have 31 weeks to go do things could change!

Girl name is not... We have 2 we like so it could go either way BUT no middle names
  • I really love the name Roslyn for a girl and the name gunner for a boy. I also like the name noble for a boy but my mom tells me that's how u describe someone not a name lol.
  • @strlitemiss My friend told her SIL she liked the name Grace and she used it on her daughter. She was pissed. I once told my SIL my favorite girl name cause I thought we were bonding. I also told her how it was a family name. A year later she was talking to me saying how much she loved Lillian for a girl. And I was like seriously?? I told you that name. She acted like we never had the previous conversation. Lucky for me I had a girl first so DD is my perfect Lillian. So I totally feel for people who get their names stolen. after that I refuse to talk baby names with anyone but DH.

    @strlitemiss That sucks!

@egraves4 I wouldn't worry too much on here. I would be more worried to tell people I know IRL, i.e. strlitemiss's cautionary tale.

  • @egraves4 Very pretty name! Love it.

  • I love reading these names! Like other people, I am scared of picking a name that may become too popular (my name is Brittany and I hated it lol). My favorite girl name is Genevieve (Gena for short) and favorite boy name is Kingston. My husband's favs are Sariah and Lucian. Planning on making the official name announcement at our gender reveal party in October.
  • If it's a girl, her name will be Amelia. If it's a boy, Ezra.
  • If we have a girl I really like the name Cecelia. It's my grandmothers name- is it weird to use her first name? That's the one thing I'm hung up on. Grandma is still around and very healthy so she would get to meet lo I'm certain (live across the country from her). This grandma and grandpa always watched us when we were young, and all the cousins always gathered there.
  • We're having the same problem. We like so many girl names but very few boy names.
  • @curiouskiddosmama I don't think it matters! We're naming our baby after my SO's grandma because he was very very close with her. I don't think it would make a difference if she was still alive because the baby will live on with this name for many more years than grandma.

  • Nearly the same thing happened to me - was talking about baby names with my SIL before either of us were thinking kids, then had multiple follow up conversations. She is quite a bit older than me and had kids first (this is my first pregnancy, my nephew is 10) and stole our name even though it was one my hubby (her brother) had picked out because it was his middle name used as a first name and one of the very few middle names we both liked. She acted like she'd never heard us say the name (despite the multiple conversations, particularly after she got pregnant), used it anyway, and literally destroyed her relationship with her brother who now can no longer trust her. It's been a serious struggle spending time with her during the holidays and while my hubby has forgiven her, he's still incredibly hurt by it. Needless to say we've decided not to share our name choices with anyone now that we're having our own with one exception - I'm going to talk to MY brother and make sure I'm not crushing his and his wife's dreams with my choice!!
  • I had a name question I wanted to put out there: We've got our boy named picked out, and so far I've got a shortlist of three girl names.  DH likes them, but he raised some mild concerns about each of them, and I wanted to get some outside opinions:

Miranda - the nickname "Randi/Randy" might come up, which we really don't like and could lead to teasing (randy=slang for horny)
Celia - similar to more common name "Cecelia" so DH wonders if people will see it and automatically call her Cecelia instead
Sylvia/Silvia - does it sound too close to saliva? (i.e., teasing again)

I know it's probably impossible to pick a name that is completely immune to teasing and/or mispronouncing, but we're trying to do a little advance troubleshooting.  So I guess my question is, how likely do people think it is that any of these concerns would actually be a problem?  Has anyone ever heard of a Miranda getting the nickname Randi, or a Sylvia being teased as Sylvia Saliva?
