The Great Question Thread

Re: The Great Question Thread

  • @leksiL I have the UppaBaby Vista. It was pricey, but it also came with a lot of accessories including the bassinet which is rated for overnight sleeping. We didn't use it overnight, but it gave me some peace of mind when my daughter ended up napping in it. I really like it, but I have to admit that it's big and bulky. That being said, I think the City Select is pretty heavy, too.

  • I am also guilty of bedsharing with both babies. I tried to make it as safe as I could- no pillows or heavy blankets, hair put up, no drinking etc. I had babies that wouldn’t sleep unless they were held. I’m hoping that this time around it will be easier... what I’d really like to do is just be a hard ass and say that eventually the baby will get so tired that he/she will sleep without being held. But I also know the exhaustion of a baby that doesn’t sleep...

How do you have multiple children and still hold a baby when they need to sleep @DDRRT1982 I managed with two for about 6 months and it was BRUTAL.
  • My OBGYN is having me come in for a gender ultrasound at 15 weeks. While I’m super excited for an earlier-than-normal gender ultrasound, I can’t help feeling a little hesitant that they actually won’t be able to see anything clearly at 15 weeks. Has anyone else had an US at 15 weeks that accurately predicted your baby’s gender? I mean, regardless, we’ll go in for our anatomy scan at 20 weeks so we’ll be able to tell more there. I just want to buy ALL the clothes when I find out...haha!
  • @segriffin16 if you are already getting the anatomy scan at 20 weeks, I would say “no thanks” to an ultrasound specifically for finding out the sex at 15 weeks. I wouldn’t want to be charged for another ultrasound. I’m struggling to understand the reason your doctor would have you do this. You likely won’t be able to determine sex via ultrasound at 15 weeks.
  • @daffodil_shoe I read a study a couple weeks ago (can’t find the darn thing now, of course) that said US techs’ gender predictions at 13 weeks were something like 80-90% accurate. Obviously waiting to 20 weeks is best but I thought it was interesting nonetheless :)
  • We are doing a 16 week gender ultrasound just because we want to know early. They offered it for $60 out of pocket and said they are just as accurate at 16 weeks as 20. I’m assuming if they can’t tell for sure they’ll let us know that and we’ll have to wait.
  • In Canada, if you do the NT test / scan instead of the NIPT test they will tell you the gender during the ultrasound... And this is at 12 weeks... So I'm sure they can tell the gender at 15 weeks!

Since we were talking about car seats, strollers, etc, I just wanted to mention that baby carriers were a lifesaver with my first. I actually used my lillebaby more than my stroller in the first year of DD's life. She didn't like it at first but I kept up with it and eventually she learned to like it. I found it easier to just carry her than get a stroller to navigate around, especially with stairs and stuff. Just an FYI for first time moms! :)
  • To anyone who got the NIPT - how long did you have to wait for results?
  • @optimism3 I got mine exactly one week after I had my blood drawn.  They sent my results the day before.
  • To add to the car seat convo—I read that now they really shouldn’t be in the infant bucket seat past about 10 months. Don’t ask me to cite this because I can’t remember where I read it. But definitely need to be out by the time their head is at or less than 1.5 inches below the top of the seat.
Also, I used to be all for extended rear facing. However, studies came out last year that there was no difference in injuries/fatalities at 2yo vs 4yo in RF, so I turned my oldest at 2.5 and my other child will turn at 2.

rock n play—anyone still going to use them for observed napping? Should I just toss it? I’m thinking about getting a graco swing instead.
  • @jessieR358, we didn’t get rid of our RNP. I will not use it for overnight sleep like I did last time but I will use it as a place to put baby if I need to pee, do dishes, etc.

I don’t think you can “see” anything happening if baby stops breathing during a nap unless you were literally counting breaths.
  • I visited the ER today after a small gush of blood. It totally freaked me out. Baby was fine but I was diagnosed with placenta previa. Doc said that most resolve on their own, but curious if anyone else has had this experience? I am 14+4.

Kind of. I have ‘placenta previa’ As well but my OB said that even though my placenta is low, they don’t truly diagnose PP until the 20 week u/s because it’s so likely to self-resolve before then
  • @kiwi2628 thanks for the response. That’s consistent with what I’m reading online, but there is also some scary stuff too. Hoping I’m in the majority and that it resolves itself on its own.
  • @therealbitts I had it during my second pregnancy. I was close to 30 weeks before it resolved itself but it did. It’s definitely scary but they had me come in when I would have bleeding episodes to make sure the baby was ok and he always was. Hopefully yours clears up soon!

  • @AugustGlass thanks so much! That is reassuring!
  • @therealbitts I’ve had two separate red blood gushes- the first was around 8 weeks and I had an US that day, all was well. The second time no US but resolved really quickly. My town spotting continues though- IIRC, you were spotting too, right? I’ll be curious to see what they say at my appt on Wednesday about the placenta.
  • @Swiftlet yes, I’ve had spotting on and off since around 8 weeks. My first two US were normal, but when I went today, the tech showed me where the placenta was over my cervix, which was the cause for the bleeding. They put me on pelvic rest and want me to see my OB tomorrow.
  • @Swiftlet I too had two big gushes at 6 and 8 weeks and was diagnosed with a subchorionic hemmorage. I’ve had some spotting since. Just told to take it easy, no sex and not to lift heavy things.
  • @Swiftlet same here! Except SCH didn't show up until 13 weeks...on and off bleeding/spotting since then (now 15 weeks) my hubby is going nuts with the no sex rule lol
  • I know pregnancy can do weird things with our skin...but has anybody ever had their eczema clear up while being pregnant?
Every year in the summer mine flares up really bad and this year, I had maybe one small patch that went away really quickly but otherwise clear of it.
  • @babyroma pregnancy does strange things. It cured my seasonal allergies with my daughter. They finally came back this year and I'm hoping this pregnancy does it again :) The doctor said it was because my immune system was suppressed? Maybe it is something similar with the eczema?

Probably the case! My lactose intolerance and egg intolerance have completely disappeared since I became pregnant. Told my OB and she said my immune system has other things to worry about. Best part of pregnancy by FAR
  • I think for most ppl, things get better like allergies... For me, it seems like pregnancy makes things worse for me. I get itchy with eating too much cheese and my skin gets itchy in general whenever I'm pregnant. Oh wells :)

Does anyone know if bread mold is harmful for in-utero babies? I was snacking on some naan bread when I noticed that it had a couple pinpoint size spots of mold. I threw out the rest, but had eaten a fairly large amount beforehand that may or may not have also been mouldy. The internet is being less than helpful right now.

ETA After talking to my husband about it, I decided I was fine. Definitely going to pay more attention from now on though.
  • @therealbitts @gerlam5 @misstree5 I’ve been on pelvic rest, no lifting over 30lbs, “take it easy” since week 9. Ugh! Hope you all resolve here soon <3
  • @Swiftlet I’m sorry ❤️ I got referred to a high risk doctor yesterday who I see on Sept 6. The waiting game sucks, but I’m trying to think positive thoughts. I hope things clear up for all of us soon.
  • @therealbitts that seems like forever to wait when you’re worried <3 my doc thinks maybe a cervical polyp, checking in a month for me. Thinking happy thoughts for you!
  • @Swiftlet of course I had another “gush” two days ago. Upside I got to see baby! Downside it’s still there :( 14 weeks 4 days
  • Do I need a full bladder for the NT scan? I meant to call the doctor's office today to ask.
  • @jvk2012 I didn’t need a full bladder for mine. Good luck!

  • @jvk2012 I only had a mildly full bladder and it was fine:)

@gerlam5 oh no :disappointed: What did your doc have to say? I’m sorry for all the the worry <3
  • @jvk2012 no, I peed in a cup before the ultrasound.

  • Sitting here chugging water because apparently they DO need a full bladder. I should have called but it would have been nice if they told me.
  • It's weird because they say they do, but after the initial measurements I got to go pee. Then we did the rest of the ultrasound.
  • Same- they told me not to worry about having a full bladder and then half way through they asked if it would be possible for me to go pee to get baby to flip the other direction (totally worked).
  • How did the ultrasound go @jvk2012
