Re: June Randoms

  • @RedBreast35 Are you a data analyst?! That's a career that I was (and maybe still am a little) considering. I love numbers lol, and analyzing data in general. I just don't know if I would like it full time. Do you like your career (if that is what you do)?

  • @LJMoon6 No, I actually work in Risk Management.  It's just a piece of what I do (we have no real data analyst position where I work) so I do my best to turn our risk data into information that the higher ups can use  :)

  • @sunshine2417 I'm so sorry to hear that happened! Also, his supervisor sounds like a piece of work. Glad he's being replaced.

@lillywonderland that gif is so hilariously awkward! And same @duewithpu2. Same.

Everyone at work is on my shit list today. My boss for not paying attention when I talk (over the phone) so I have to answer the same question 5 times, and THREE people on my team who decided not to join our team call today. Is it so hard to send a text, email, instant message to let me know you're too busy or to checking your effing calendar to know it's happening? It's just so rude. And they are normally way better than this, so I can't get too pissed, but still.

  • @sunshine2417 & @LJMoon6 Thinking about both of you (and your H and coworker)!
  • @sunshine2417 @LJMoon6 Ugh how awful in both circumstances. I can totally see someone like DH saying "What? He's a big boy, if he said no, he has the right to" but then would feel really remorseful for feeling that way after the fact. The fact that the supervisor was still defensive is probably a coping mechanism to rationalize the feelings. Or he's just an ass... There are people like that I guess.

@zuuls_mom You guys all work remote for the most part, right? I feel like those privileges and flexibility get taken away the second people stop calling in for meetings. Technically we don't get to "work from home" at my office but my boss is really flexible and I can pretty much take care of whatever I need to, whenever I need to. Well, there's another chick on the team who waaaaay takes advantage of it (late everyday, leaves early every day, works from home, etc) and I'm afraid someone is going to say something soon and then we'll all be chained to our desks from 8-5 everyday again. Why can't others just get this shit together?

Welp - did the glucose test. The drink itself wasn't that bad. In fact, after my first sip I was like, what's the big deal? But then I felt sooo ggrrooooossss afterward while waiting for the blood draw. So now I know why people say the drink is gross. My lab tech made me drink it in 5 minutes, not 15 like I heard though. So, that was also a little challenging. Especially toward the end. Bleh. Glad it's over and I HOPE i passed so I dont have to do that again
  • @nomangos23 Fingers crossed that you pass!

Speaking of working remotely, as DH was dropping me off at my office this morning (we carpool) I couldn't remember if either of us had turned off the oven before we left. He had a bunch of meetings and trainings today that he couldn't miss so I ended up having to drop him off at his office then heading the 30-45 minutes back home. When I got here the oven was off (of course), but better safe than sorry. The only drag is that I have to leave here in a few minutes to drive back down to pick DH up, then drive all the way home again. Baby brain at it's finest.
  • @zuuls_mom @nomangos23 I work at a super progressive non-profit and we cannot get our crap together re: telecommuting. All of our offices are fully capable of telecommuting and we have great video conference software, screens in every conference and phone room, etc. But the chief officer for my division is super old school and likes bodies at desks. The worst part is that I work cross-division so other teams which I work closely with have very lenient WFH policies and some team members full on telecommute. But me? I drag ass in from 60 miles away. I've talked to HR about it and they're like "the policies are set by division, specifically because your CO has such a problem with it." Why? Why does he get to rule the WFH policy of a 450+ person org? I honestly put my foot down with this pregnancy and was like "no, I'm only coming in 2 days a week" but when I do I roll in at 8:30 am and no one is here until 9:30-10am. They're probably like "bish is leaving at 4pm every day!" (We have 7 hour work days here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) Anyway, I am on a mission to make WFH less of a stigmatizing thing because I honest to god do not know how I am going to do that 2-hour + commute with a baby at home.
  • @cmdesigner OMG 60 miles?! I would fight to WFH too! And yes I can only imagine it will get harder once baby arrives. My company (before they were acquired) was very conservative about WFH and there was no flexibility. Since we've been purchased it's soooooo much better. It really stinks that some people are close minded that way. There are pros and cons to both sides though, I actually prefer to be in the office when there's a lot going on. However, if it's a slow day, I'd rather WFH so I can be productive here too.
  • @nomangos23 my company has a main HQ in Denver (where I live) and then a second one in Kansas City. Only about 500 of our over 2000 employees are out of those locations. A vast majority work 100% remote since they live all over the country. I talked with all of them individually about missing the meeting and they all felt horrible (they are very good employees usually).

@cmdesigner my company has a 35 mile from the office radius that requires 4 days in the office each week and I am only 17 miles away, but it takes me about an hour and 10 min to get in/back home every day. Thankfully, my division is more flexible with WFH and we're only "expected" in the office 3 days a week. A majority do 2 days though (myself included) since parking is no longer free and it's $20/day. 60 miles to get to the office is RIDICULOUS! There is no way they can expect you to drive in that much with an infant at home.

  • Yeahhhh, there’s no way I can WFH at this point in my career so I’m super envious of all of you! Maybe someday when I leave the lab, but for now I take my Choo-Choo everyday to lessen the stress of commuting.

DH can WFH most days, but gets sick of it and the isolation. At one point they kicked him out of his office (they commandeered it for someone else) a couple years ago and he WFH for 6 months. He has a nice home office tho!

  • @lillywonderland how far is your office from your house? I can imagine in a lab type setting there isn't much you can do from home lol
  • @nomangos23 I am right on a commuter train line so when I'm not pregnant I take the train in, but it's still over an hour and a half one way for me. I just can't do it right now because I have to commute to NYC FIDI and it requires a 15 minute subway ride on a very crowded train where I am not guaranteed a seat. After passing out a month or two ago from my low BP I had to seriously look at other options...so I'm driving in 2-days a week but even that is becoming untenable with the SPD. God, this pregnancy is kicking my ass. But I am a graphic design director and there is literally nothing about my job that requires me to be physically in the building. My team is super connected via Slack as well so it is frustrating to say the least.

@zuuls_mom parking is ridiculous in NYC (as I am sure you can imagine). I come in early so I can get the "super early bird special" but if I come in during normal hours it can easily be $50/day. Plus the tolls to get into NYC which are around $15 during peak hours. But even my commuter rail ticket is absurd, I pay around $600/mo for my stupid monthly transit passes.

Commuting (and NYC transit) sucks, y'all.
  • @LJMoon6 yikes. Any update on your co-worker? You did the right thing to push help on him. He sounds like he’s experiencing a stroke, and it’s quite common to be agitated and confused and refuse help when a stroke is happening. I hope he’s getting what he needs. Hard to be helpless in those situations!
  • Jumping in on the WFH discussion. My old job was totally fine with employees working from home. I tried it a few times and ended up taking long naps or browsing the internet. So I guess it depends on your personality. I am one that definitely needs to be in the office.
  • @sunshine2417 that is so sad :( and unfortunately men are all to quick to dismiss when they aren’t feeling right and something goes wrong.

@LJMoon6 I hope your coworker can get some help. Strokes are serious and it sounds like he did have one :( not getting treatment right away can cause lasting effects

I want to nest and I also want to nap. I just mopped the kitchen but I need to do it again because my little dog sucks. Also, I love my cats but there is fur everywhere and it drives me crazy! Sometimes I wonder what life would be like without pets but I love having them...
  • @sunshine2417 that’s such a sad story. Really made my blood boil how he was obviously in poor condition and it was just dismissed.

My husband is a software architect. His job obviously lends itself well to working remotely, but he really had to fight for WFH days.
  • @nomangos23 Office is 30mi from home...but traffic is a bitch here in SoCal, so it’ll take an hour on a good day. And you’re right - there’s basically nothing I can do from home when working in (or supporting) the lab. Random small projects / reports, but that’s about it. The FDA reallllllly frowns upon taking raw data home. lol.
  • Sorry I've been so busy today, my posts have been so sporadic. Just know that I'm reading all of your posts and wish I had the time to respond to you all!
@lillywonderland WFH is not an option for me either (obviously lol). I think if my job responsibilities changed then I possibly could get away with 1 or 2 days at home. I'm not sure I'd be the best at WFH tho. I'd be with @kgg2241, I need the accountability. Also, I think I would get bored or feel super isolated too.
@blitzybee No real update (at least none that I know of). Still the same, wont go get checked out. I found out today that he's actually only 55 yo. Sooo young! Today he went and put a sign up on our lab door saying that the lab is going to be closed tomorrow... that's not actually happening.  And no one knows where he got that from. Our labs only close once a year, if that. And it's scheduled out weeks in advance. He's in charge of our facilities maintenance. He's a super intelligent man. There are some pretty serious things he could mess with that would be a huge disaster. And potentially deadly (very hazardous gases). I'm glad the supervisor took away his keys but I'm also a little nervous that he could still get into something.

Question- should I be concerned if baby’s kicks aren’t so strong they make me uncomfortable? I’ve heard ladies talk about their baby’s kicks making them uncomfortable or feeling painful. Don’t get me wrong, baby is moving, but nothing even close to making me uncomfortable. There have been a few stronger kicks than others but for the most part it’s just wiggles and rolls. Is that okay?
  • @nomangos23 I wouldn’t worry! As long as everything is tracking fine at your appointments. I have a coworker due two weeks after me and she asked me around her week 22 if i was feeling kicks because she was just starting to feel movement. I laughed because I started feeling mine around 17 weeks and she’s kind of a monster all the time in terms of movement. But my US tech said she was one of the most active babies she’s seen. It really depends on the location of your placenta and where your LO is hanging out. For example, my coworker has an anterior placenta and she’s also a FTM so it’s not uncommon for women in her situation to feel movement lighter and later. I’m a FTM but my placenta is perfectly posterior and my LO likes to sit on my bladder and cervix so I feel every. little. movement.
  • @nomangos23 there is still plenty of time for those kicks to make you uncomfortable!! My first born would drive me crazy with his kicks, and came out with HUMONGOUS feet! He’s also kind of classic ADHD, so I kind of think it was his personality. This time around, the placenta is in front, and baby seems a little more laid back. I figure as long as I feel movement every few hours, it’s okay. And we still have a whole trimester for the crazy movements!
  • @nomangos23 I think you’re fine! I tend to forget that we are due at the end of the month and will compare myself to ladies due at the beginning. 2-3 weeks is a long time in baby baking! Just last week or the week before I internally freaked out when everyone was talking about the cervix kicks because I wasn’t experiencing them. I’m just now getting them! Kicks are getting stronger for me, but nothing compared to what I know is coming.
  • @nomangos23 I’d say you’re totally fine at this point. They still have tons of fluid and room to swim around in there. Around 30-34 weeks when they get bigger and bigger and room starts to run out, it will start feeling a little more uncomfortable, but shouldn’t be epically painful. Sometimes an annoying position.

  • Thanks guys! You are the best. And good point about being at the end of the month and others having 2-3 weeks on baby. I tend to forget I'm not at the same place as everyone else.
  • ...so it begins. I’m doing my glucose test right now. They gave me the lemon-lime one - not too bad, but it was no Sprite. And they won’t let me move from the waiting room. Boo!
  • @lillywonderland woah woah woah since when is there a lemon lime option?! I would have gladly picked that over the orange and fruit punch flavors
  • @lillywonderland they won't let you move? That sucks. And lemon lime actually doesn't sound too bad! Good luck!
  • Good luck @lillywonderland! I have the lemon-lime in my fridge waiting for next week. I had that one for the 3 hour I had to do with my first and though it was much better than the orange. Less flavor, the lack of color makes it seem more innocent. Lol
  • @duewithpu2, @kgg2241lol. Yeah, it really wasn’t too bad. I just want to drink water now to get the sugar out of my mouth!!! They wouldn’t let me do that either. WTH!!!

@sunshine2417 Fun fact: DH and his entire family call the yellow Gatorade “green”. They’re all crazy.

I’ve heard of some doctors allowing candy bars as a substitute, but I get it done at one of the lab chains so they do it their own way.
  • Would you guys suggest picking a flavor you don't really care for as to not ruin the other flavors you do like? For example, I don't care for fruit punch, so I wouldn't be devastated if I never drink another fruit punch again. But I do however like an occasional Fanta or Sprite and would be sad if I ruined those drinks for myself.

  • @LJMoon6 for me it’s only maybe the first third that even resembles its counterpart in ‘dud’ version, with the other two thirds being their whole own entity of nasty. And then when you get the ‘real thing’ it’s like a little slice of heaven when you take that first sip and it doesn’t suck. So for me, no, it didn’t ruin the real deal!
  • @LJMoon6 I have had the orange and picked it again for next week, so I can’t speak for the other flavors, but it is more like an orange Koolaid or
Hi-C than Fanta. I don’t think it is bad enough to ruin it for you.
  • It is currently 300 degrees at work. Manufacturing is on shutdown for a month so
apparently this means that no one else needs AC in the entire building.

@LJMoon6 eh, it doesn’t matter much. The lemon lime one was okay, but it barely resembles Sprite. I’d still go for a Sprite now.
  • @LJMoon6 to me the drink tastes a lot more like melted popsicle than flat soda - I like orange sodas and didn't feel like there was any relationship between them!
  • Wait wait wait... there are other flavors? And you guys got to pick? They just handed me the orange one and told me to keep it in the fridge, and I didn't question it. Bonus UO: I didn't mind the drink one bit. Mine just tasted exactly like orange Gatorade.
  • @nomango23 I didn't feel great either after drinking it, but nowhere near badly enough to have gotten sick!  I wonder how often that happens?!?
@cammie0526 I didn't mind the taste either.  It tasted like someone made powdered Gatorade and put too much powder in it.
