@nerdeebird Chemical pregnancies pretty much always are due to a genetic/viability issue with the embryo that has been present since conception, and absolutely nothing to do with the mother.  I know it can be hard to not feel guilty but your loss was pretty much 100% certainly not your fault!

I honestly haven't read too much into the caffeine thing other than to stay below 200mg.  What I can find on a quick search says it's basically inconclusive if lower doses have any effect, but to limit intake as much as possible.

I am not a coffee drinker anyway,  but if it makes you feel better, I am still having a cup or two of black tea almost every morning.

If it's really bothering you I'm sure your doctor would talk to you about it if you called them!  I hope you can get some peace of mind!

  • After I had a MMC when I cut out caffeine completely, I threw caution to the wind. I can hardly function with the amount I am drinking and can't fathom making it through with nothing!

  • @runrinserepeat thanks for the link to a primary source. I guess I should trust that if doctors are paranoid enough about us eating things like hummus but ok with a cup of coffee I should be too!

@hkom thanks for the reassurance about my CP. My doctor said the same thing about chromosomal issues being the primary reason for early loss and that there's really not much you can do to cause it.

@texas_t thank you for your response. I'm so sorry about your MMC but it's reassuring to know that things are really so much out of our hands and things can happen even when we're "following the rules".

My workload is going to go into overdrive in May and I think I might die of exhaustion if don't drink a little bit of caffeine. Thanks for the feedback ladies!

Also... on a side note I just learned how to do gifs

@nerdeebird No problem!  I was sure you already knew that, but it always helps to hear it again  ;)

  • Add me to the pro caffeine group! Prior to being pregnant I would usually drink one cup of coffee and 2 pops a day. I have cut back so now I drink 1 cup of coffee and 1 pop (major change, I know  I still drank usually about one cup of caffeine when I was pregnant with DS too and had no problems

  • Oh yeah. I used to drink two cups of coffee and maybe 1-2 cans of pop a day. Switched to 1-2 cups of half-caf, and have mostly cut the caffeinated pop.

The coffee for me is more of a ritual than anything else. I would try to switch to herbal tea but it wouldn’t be the same :(

  • Also a coffee fan.
Though the only thing I’ve been able to stomach this last week is pink lemonade so I haven’t been drinking it much. If I wasn’t so sick I would have stuck to 1-2 cups per day.

  • @nerdeebird Chai tea is the best! I've been having a tall chai tea lattle every single morning and it's delightful! It makes me feel like a normal, awake person.

@nerdeebird Hooray!!  Glad you're feeling a bit better.  Chai is the besssst.

  • I tried to go cold-turkey on caffeine; I told myself I wasn't addicted and didn't need it to function and lololol I was a dirty liar. I'm so friggin' tired. Send help.

Somewhat related ... does anyone have any tips for socializing with symptoms?

We're supposed to hang out with my husband's family all day out of state tomorrow, and we're choosing not to tell anyone about our pregnancy until the first trimester ends in June. That being said, I don't know how I'm going to make it 9 AM to 9 PM exhausted and emotional, nauseous/gaggy/pukey, and somehow constantly starving yet simultaneously food-averse with a group of people I can't explain anything to. My husband suggested telling them I have the flu, but then wouldn't they find it weird I didn't just stay home? Should I stay home, or do I just white-knuckle this?
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @xx-stagemommy maybe say you're on antibiotics for a stomach bug? Just keep it generic, but the antibiotics could explain why you didn't just start home? Idk, I'm trying! Lol

  • @xx-stagemommy haha see I am in full acceptance of my addiction to caffiene. Though I will admit I had no idea how tired early pregnancy would make me and how desperately I would actually need the coffee.

Regarding socializing, I don’t know that I would skip out unless you legitimately really feel not up to it or if you don’t think you’ll see them again any time soon. I see my in-laws every week so the “feeling under the weather” but only works for so long... are you just worried about feeling sick or also not drinking/eating certain things etc? If it’s the latter I like to say I’m trying to be healthier and cut back on the alcohol, etc. If the former you could just say you feel off - saying you have the flu probably would make it seem odd you’re there since it’s been so bad this year!
  • @maureenmce omg chai latte sounds even better! I foresee one of those in my near future

    @hkom thanks!

@texas_t iced chai’s are the best! Especially in the summer.

Mmm have you ever had a dirty chai?? Sooo good. Probably too much caffiene though. Are decaf espresso shots a thing?
  • @nerdeebird decaf is definitely a thing, I drink decaf cappuccinos all the time. But a shot of espresso regular is only about 64 mg of caffeine so well Within the limit.

  • @xx-stagemommy I’d probably just tell everyone you slept poorly or something. It’s going to be a long first tri if you avoid everyone you know until you announce. My biggest issue is dealing with my pregnant SIL because I know when I say something about being tired she’s probably thinking “you have no idea” but SHE doesn’t have any idea, lol

  • @xx-stagemommy any variety of half-truths will work. You're certainly "not feeling great," you're definitely "feeling a litle off," you're "coming down with something" (namely, pregnancy), you're cutting back on caffeine (that makes me cranky, too), you're cutting back on alcohol, you're not hungry, you've had a rough week... lots of avenues you could take. If anybody guesses pregnancy, a simple "Wouldn't that be something?" or "I guess anything's possible" (or, if the family member doing the guessing is being a jerk about, "That's a bit of a rude question, don't you think?") will go a long way in avoiding the question. In my experience, "No thanks" really is a pretty acceptable standalone answer, though, if someone offers you something you don't want or can't have; most people aren't going to demand an explanation, and if they're not actively offering something, they won't notice that you aren't seeking it out.
  • Iced chai was a bad idea. Barf.

  • My OBGYN told me to do half calf until second trimsester and then 1 regualr cup a day is fine. Following same for this pregnancy.
Always hold on to hope ❤
  • @CecilB93, @nerdeebird, @runrinserepeat & @AGK2015 - Thanks for the replies! It's less about avoiding people on a day-to-day basis or anyone getting suspicious that I'm not drinking, etc. and more about twelve consecutive hours of showcasing all my symptoms, y'know? My MIL is in town from Florida, so I'd feel badly ducking out of things since we don't see her very often, but I'm gagging every 10 minutes and can't stop yawning - I feel like someone will probably say something, but at least now I'll be in the right headspace to deflect rather than just sputtering, haha.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @xx-stagemommy ; I'm a little nervous about this, too!  We aren't telling our families for a few weeks still.  My parents live two hours away from me, so I won't be seeing them before that weekend anyway.  But my husband's family lives ten minutes from us.  We found out we are pregnant on Friday, so I haven't seen them yet.  I'm not experiencing a lot of nausea, but I'm exhausted!  And I feel like I LOOK exhausted.  We'll be spending time with them this weekend, so hopefully I'll be able to re-direct any suspicion.

    Good luck with your MIL!
  • @xx-stagemommy I’m finding. A lot of relief with the b6 and 1/2 a unison combination at night, that has helped with the constant nausea. However it makes me a little sluggish in the evening (I take it by 7-8pm so it will wear off by morning).
  • k_m10k_m10 member
Here’s my question - when did the nausea and exhaustion start to kick in for you? I’m feeling okay, a bit tired but not exhausted or nauseated. I’m between 4-5 weeks.

  • @katem987 mine doesn’t usually start until late in week 7! It started unusually early for me this time.

  • @katem987 Usually, 6 weeks, give or take. This time I around I had some waves before six weeks, but nothing crazy. Now at almost 7 weeks I'm having pretty strong nausea in the morning and in the evening, but am good during the day as long as I keep eating. But nausea varies for everyone, as far as when it kicks in and how intense it is. So try not to compare too much! :)
  • I have a question:

Any other mamas use essential oils?

I'm planning to continue throughout pregnancy and during my labor & delivery.

just got into essential oils, and was hoping to use them through pregnancy as well. Even since my BFP, the peppermint oil has been great for my headaches.

Yes, but please please please be careful with them. There are many that are not safe when pregnant. The Facebook group “using essential oils safetly” is a wealth of knowledge.

I agree with @Gwyneddlesliegrace.  Be careful, do A LOT of research, and ask your doctor if you are unsure about anything.  Also, be really careful with them if you have pets.  Dogs and especially cats are very sensitive to some of them.

  • @nurse_good @runrinserepeat YES! Thank you for asking this. I use oils but I've stopped (besides diffusing) since my BFP. I'll slowly introduce them back in as I feel comfortable. I asked my Dr about them and she said just diffuse. But I will make a nausea roller blend when that really kicks in (peppermint, and lavender). I also preemptively bought Ginger to use for morning sickness.

Just an FYI that peppermint oil has been linked to miscarriages. Later on it will also kill your supply. It’s one I would for sure stay away from.
Id work with a certified aroma therapist (NOT a brand rep) for accurate advice.

  • @bumpitup, @Gwyneddlesliegrace. And @hkom; glad to meet some other oils mamas!

I’ve used EOs for years but when I knew we were planning to start TTC, I started doing some more researching about pregnancy safe oils.  Some good starting points a friend shared with me:
(I use a certain brand, so some of the oils listed are specific to that brand)

I’m an idiot And thought it’d be a good idea to smell some in the gift shop at work today. Bad idea! The pregnant nose did not appreciate any of it. So...I smelled a ginger one thinking that would help with the wave of nausea, nope that didn’t work either.
