Gestational diabetes mamas

Re: Gestational diabetes mamas

  • Well, I've got it. I was diagnosed last Thursday after my numbers came back at almost 200 for the one hour *facepalm*. They skipped the 3 hour and set me right up for monitoring and treatment. I've been testing for two days now and aside from my fingers feeling like pincushions it's not that bad. I've been able to eat more or less normally, just smaller portions and I've only tested a little high once. My diet was already pretty fruit heavy, and I've actually had to increase carbs a bit to stay in range. Here's hoping that trend continues!

  • I threw some crackers in my purse the morning of, thank God!  I was not given a diet just told to fast.  During the last hour of the test I was planning my lunch meal...looking forward to it.  Get to my car and my battery is dead!!!  Then I was late to meet someone else so I never got my bacon cheddar potato wedges:(  Those crackers saved me until DH came to the rescue.

  • Oh no @tropical1982 that is the worst right after having to do that! I'm having DH drop me off and pick me up.
  • Stabbing my fingers is going ok. 2 pricks in. first one hurt more than i expected it. second one was like nothing, go figure. numbers seem ok. my 1 hr after breakfast wasn't great but wasn't horrible - 142. I am a data junkie so I will actually have fun with this  praying I don't have GD as I want to say at my birth center and midwife!

  • @SweetSweetTooth If I have to monitor, I may reach out :)

What are you supposed to be under after each meal? 140?
  • I think the official numbers are 140 1 hour after a meal but my midwife wants me about 120 or below :/
  • @SweetSweetTooth
Are you supposed to be checking at 1 hour? I have GD (and did with my first pregnancy) and I check 4 x a day. Fasting and 2 hours after each meal. The best advice I can say is to stay away from fruit, starch, and carbs as all are equal to eating actual sugar. I am doing Keto diet and have already noticed a huge difference.

Target numbers for GD are less than 90 at Fasting, less than 130 at 1 hour post meal, and less than 120 at 2 hour post meal.

  • @SweetSweetTooth my doctors want my bs to be under 130 1 hour after the start of each meal, and under 90 for my fasting. Are they making you keep a log of what you eat as well?
  • Yeah they wanted one hour after eating (now freaking out wondering if it is 2 hours) for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and right away in the morning for a fasting number  This is instead of the three hour test.
I asked if they wanted me to keep a log and they said yes. Comforting they didn't think to tell me to do it!

So the 1 hour is after you start eating? I swear they told me one hour after I was done. Ugh I will have to call them.
  • @SweetSweetTooth
I'm sure the 1 hour is just their way of doing things. I've just always done the 2 hours. I believe you start counting time when you finish the meal (at least I do). I also keep a log of my food for them. I was asking about the time because usually you need to be under 120 at the 2 hour but you mentioned 1 hour so I was confused. People without GD have number like 70 at fasting, 108 at 1 hour and under 99 at 2 hour. Big difference.

  • @SweetSweetTooth my doctors want an hour after the start. I think each one has their preference. I’ve read various things. I’d just confirm with your doctor what you need to do. Maybe because you’re doing it to see if you have it, they may have different standards than if you are diagnosed.
  • Failed my 1hr test yesterday. I’m heartened to see some of y’all have had similar responses to me. I’ve not been able to stop crying for about 12 hours now. DH doesn’t know how to help me. I’ve read it over and over “It’s not your fault.” “You can’t help what the hormones do.” But I still feel like a miserable failure. I gained a bit of weight between months 5-6, but have been super meticulous since then and curbed the gain and made healthy choices and exercise daily. It feels like I’m failing as a mother already.

Go go for my 3 hour test in a week and a half because my dr is out of town next week. Is there anything I can do in that time to help bring my levels down before I take it? I’m so worried and upset to get that diagnosis.

Also, any suggestions on how to help my crazy emotions are appreciated. Between this, my clothes not fitting, and feeling all the emotions, I am a step away from being a full blown basketcase.

@mamacox_2018 have you gotten maternity clothes? If not I highly suggest a couple pairs of pants/shorts and shirts. It felt amazing to be able to wear a pair of Jeans that actually look nice and not hair tied closed.
As for the emotions, it's fine to cry it out when you need to. Talk out your feelings and just tell DH to listen not necessarily give feedback (unless you want that) go for a car ride and scream sing your favorite songs, try some meditation..
I unfortunately can't offer any insight on the 3hr test. I also failed my 1hr and take my 3hr on Tuesday. They told me no food or drink for 12 hours before the test. That's it.. I know its not really what you want to hear but I wouldn't change what your doing/eating too much. If something's going on and you mask that for a week to pass the test and your levels go back to too high after it could affect you and baby. If your levels are high and you fail the 3hr they'll give you steps to help keep things under control and that'll be what's safest for baby and yourself.. try to keep your head up!
  • @mamacox_2018 First off, a failed 1hr does not mean you have GD. It just means you are more predisposed to it. Try not to get too upset until you get your 3hr results. I know that's easier said than done, because I'm in the same boat. Second, you don't want to "cheat" the test. If you have GD it's SUPER important to know because it can affect the health of your baby. My dr actually has me eating more carbs these 3 days leading up to my test because they want to see how my body processes it.

From what I have researched, many manage GD simply by diet. You may have to monitor your sugars throughout the day (that's the part I'm least looking forward to). Yes, some have to take insulin, but it's dependent on how bad it is.

(I'm trying hard to practice what I preach right now, because I'm terrified too. My 3hr is tomorrow AM)

Yes, I have to stress the importance of NOT attempting to cheat the glucose test, as @sammierose464 stated above. You want to eat as you normally would or change your diet to what your doctor suggests, but do not change your diet unless instructed to do so. GD is nothing to fuck with. @mamacox_2018

@sammierose464 you worded that way better than I attempted to. Pregnancy brain is making it much harder to articulate things the way I want them to sound lately
  • Thanks ladies! It makes me feel better to know I’m not alone, cause I’m sure we all feel like that sometimes. Thank you in particular for the advise on talking with DH. I know he hates seeing me worry as much as I hate to stress him out over it.

As for not cheating the test- you all make an excellent point. I’ll stick to a pretty typical routine of eating habits, and hope for the best. It’s been good to be reminded that it doesn’t mean I’m a failure or I’m doing something wrong. My body is just different. I want little man to have the healthiest start as possible.

Blood sugar monitoring sounds a bit overwhelming, but I’ll be 28+2 when I go for my 2 hr, so at least I’ll only have to deal with it for 3 months if it does come to that.

I can’t stress enough how thankful I am for your feedback and candidness. I really appreciate it. Thinking of you all who have your follow ups this week! <3
  • It's scary, and many of us on this thread feel the exact same way you do. And we will all be here to support each other!
  • @sammierose464 thinking of you today as you take your 3 hour! I hope you are able to enjoy your food afterwards!!
  • Thank you! 1 hr down and I'm ok so far. Ive gotten much better at blood draws this pregnancy. I just wish I could drink water!
  • @sammierose464 as if you can have a small sip or two? Ice chips ?
  • 10 sticks down, 46 to go. Testing blood sugar 4x a day isn't fun but it isn't horrible! No clue how people do this every day for their life though.

My fasting numbers have been under 85 and all meals but breakfast have been under 100. Breakfast for two day was 142 and 124. The 142 day was justified .. Big bowl of whole wheat pasta, a peanut butter protein ball, and a glass of skim milk lol

Today it was just 117! For the one hour after a meal the midwife wants me at 120 or under. Must say I am not doing horrible so that helps with doing this!
  • I'm so sad to report I have been diagnosed with GD again. I failed in every hour. I was really expecting this as I had it last time and so I'm surprised at how devastated I feel. I am just low. I am not looking forward to going to the hospital at minimum 2x a week. I'm also annoyed because I know I'm going to be hungry all the time and last time I had GD I wasn't lactose intolerant...and now I am. It really limits my options for foods that actually make me feel full. This just sucks. I know I'll pull it together and do whats best for my baby but I'm gonna go ahead and be sad about it for a few days.
  • I'm sorry to hear @mygoodlucycat. It's definitely okay to be sad for a few days. The good news it's it's not for life and now you will be able to manage it.
  • Just found this online... Really?! Time to stay off the internet, but dang it I like to be informed!
In one research study, it was found that anterior placenta position may cause certain health complications like gestational diabetes, placental abruption, intrauterine growth retardation and pregnancy induced hypertension.
  • Interesting. Yeah I am trying to not panic about my possible 3 predispositions to Pre-E: PCOS, GD (if I have it), and my mom's history. Thankfully my mom said she did everything she could to try and get taken off of work and she was only borderline.
  • @SweetSweetTooth that’s highly interesting since I’ve had two out of three pregnancies with GD and they were/are both anterior placentas.

@sammierose464 I had no predispositions to it and ended up with severe preeclampsia with my first, which is also the one pregnancy without GD. It was mild with my second and am watching for it this time around.
  • I failed my 1-hr pretty miserably. It was at a 196. So on Friday I'm going back for the 3-hr. But with that number I would not be surprised at all to fail the 3-hr. My mom had it with me, so I'm not super surprised, just hoping it's not a bad case of it. I'm terrible with carbs (they're my favorite food). But whatever it takes. I don't want to change too much before I take the test because I want it to be accurate. My doc just said no eating after midnight the night before, but I can still have water.

I'm bummed, but trying not to stress about it. It is what it is.
  • @hannaht8516 mine was 174. I passed my 3 hr with carb loading the few days prior. My numbers were close though.

    Good luck!
  • I'm officially joining the club. I'm going to really focus on a healthy diet. I already have plenty of type 2 diabetes in the family and I read gestational diabetes increases your chances of acquiring type 2 later on. It's really a wake up call for me that I have to commit to a healthy lifestyle permanently!
  • @jweber4747 I'm sorry to hear, but I'm glad you have a good attitude about it. It's definitely scary when you think about the chances for Type 2. When I was diagnosed with PCOS and insulin resistance it was so scary to me.
  • I ugly cried all over the place when I failed my first test with super high numbers, so I think I already came to terms with it before the results came in. I have a good deal of family members with PCOS as well, I understand the difficulties that come along with that so I can imagine it would be stressful to have that in combination with something else. Fortunately it can all be managed and many people with these conditions have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies!

On the plus side, if my baby is extra large, I already gave birth vaginally to a ten pound baby so I know I have the hips for it! I'm hoping with strict diet I can have one under 9 this time though!
  • I have been testing my blood for a week and all of my numbers have been good except 3 (per my midwifes range) of the 28 times in the week. I sent the info to my midwife as I will be seeing an associate of hers at my next appointment and wanted her to know how it was going. I did this through email as I am working crazy hours. She replied she wanted to talk on the phone and wanted exact numbers (understandable) so we are chatting tonight. I sent her the numbers but now I am a little worried.
  • @SweetSweetTooth don't worry. She may think your numbers are fine and want you to stop
  • edited July 2018
@sammierose464 that would be awesome! I call her in about 20 mins!
  • cjx95cjx95 member
@SweetSweetTooth fingers crossed it goes well!!
  • Short version update: birth center midwife wants me to keep tasting. May need to change my diet as the blood sugar spikes are not good even though I have only had three in 30 sticks. She wants to me see my hospital midwife on Monday to hear what she says and compare the two options and make a game plan at my Tuesday appointment. She said since I will be 30 weeks on Sunday we don't have a lot of time to see what works.
  • @SweetSweetTooth Don't stress it. The good thing is, you're already tracking, you already know how your body is reacting to certain foods.
