Apologies if this had already been created (I looked but didn't see!)
Second time mama here, dx with gestational diabetes at about 20 weeks the first time. I'm super needle phobic but I got through it last time. Thankfully my husband was able to administer insulin for me in the last month.
Went to my first prenatal appt on Friday and was surprised they wanted me to sit for my one hour afterwards. I begged to just let me skip it and do the 3hr and they said no. Well no shock I failed with a 157. I have my three hour tomorrow and am expecting a dx again.
Anyone else dealing with gestational diabetes yet?
How do you manage and what do you find most difficult?
Thanks mamas! I'm also happy to answer questions since I've been through it once. Looking forward to getting and giving support.
Re: Gestational diabetes mamas
Any recommendations on the test itself?

Yes @knottieamusements Thanks for letting me know. Let's see if this works...."I read this a few days ago and I am in total and utter shock at how naive I was as a pregnant woman. I'm just gonna do the darn thing and hope it goes okay. My levels have all been fine the last few years normally but I've also been on metformin. I was eating pretty well before I got pregnant. The problem now is no desire to cook and limited food desires. I had to basically force myself to eat chicken nuggets tonight.

Today, I had my first appointment and I feel so relieved! I got my glucose screening today and get results in a few days. I’m hoping everything is okay. This place I’m an now seems so much more thorough so that’s a huge weight off my shoulders. Now I just gotta deal with PGAL brain.
That is seriously terrible and I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm really glad you feel more comfortable with your new doctor. Trust your gut!!
medical sources. It’s great that @tabbiekat13 knows how to monitor her sugar, but she has been through this before. The one hour glucose test is not that awful and risks of untreated GD are horrifying.
There is is a reason for all
of these medical interventions.
@Shidoni - that is awful, and i am horrified that a practicing doctor could be that incompetent. I'm glad you are being properly monitored this time for both you and baby's sake!
@kimmerann3 - I have the same plan, only i am eating like crap right now because of how sick i feel all the time. Hoping to get my butt in gear in second tri....
Look for high protein options- it isn’t all just veggies, and you still need to get calories, healthy fats, and protein. Think eggs, chicken, steak, avocados, beans and nuts. Also- switch to whole grains for things like bread and rice.
*try and focus on the fact that there is an end date.
*you did NOT cause this- GD is entirely hormonal, not like T2 which can be affected by the foods you eat- GD is not. If you ate no carbs you could still have GD you just wouldn't be diagnosed without the 1-hour/ 3-hour because your sugar can't spike without eating carbs.
*Diabetes is manageable and with proper care your baby faces nearly no additional risks.
*Don't be afraid of insulin if you progress to needing it- it is generally much easier to control than the oral meds. and the needles are intimidating but hurt WAY less than the finger pricking!
I'm happy to help with any diabetes management questions that come up. Because I was DX less than a year ago I am still learning, but that also makes my perspective fresh as not much is second nature just yet.
Edited because of wrong spelling.
150 2 hours after eating is concerning. You should be under 120 1 hour after eating.
Think of carbs in a new way: moderation and pairing.
Fats and Proteins slow down the process that turns carbs into sugar. So if you moderate your carbs AND pair them with fats and proteins you have a better chance of avoiding a spike. I have learned I can avoid doses of insulin if I eat a bag of almonds before some kind of carb like popcorn or chips. Full fat yogurt will help curb some of the sugars in the yogurt. Eat grapes with some pepper jack cheese (full fat).
That said, if you are GD or T2D then it may spike either way. But that is the cliffs notes on how you control with diet. Limit carbs and pair with proteins and fats.
You can do this! It will become the new normal, and you may be able to ease up after pregnancy- keep that end date in sight!
