Anyone have a good maternity compression pantyhose they use? I can find pricey ones fine ($50+), but not something truly affordable that's true compression (20-30mmHg). I'm wondering if I need an MD/midwife to give me a prescription? Any experience with this?
I have May-Thurner's Syndrome, which is a vascular abnormality that makes me prone to varicose veins, so this is a priority for me. Thanks!
@jayandaplus Have you tried Amazon? When I was searching maternity tights a bunch of compression ones came up for around $15. I didn't note hg though...
@jayandaplus - Not pantyhose, but my stepsister (a longtime RN) raves about Sockwell compression socks. On Amazon, they offer a few 20-30mmHg options. Not super cheap ($20-$25 per pair) but less than $50!
@jayandaplus echoing the socks recommendation - I'm really not familiar with any pantyhose, but I'm in love with Pro Compression socks. They're pricey at around $50/pair, but always have a deal where if you buy 5, three are free. So 5 pair for $100 or so. The deal is "3PLUS" Totally worth it, in my book. I have had mine for 3ish years... maybe 4 now? And they are as good as day one and have not lost any compression. They are rated 20-30 mm Hg. I need to buy some that are the dress sock versions, as I only have wild colors that I wear with my scrubs.
@Kipperoo I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's co-worker! What a freak accident.
@PghMom412 I hear you. Our living room looks so bare now it's definitely taking some getting used to.
My mom came over today to help me empty out all the boxes that have piled up in the nursery. She's coming back later on in the week to help me paint so I'm getting really excited! We have all our furniture now except the dresser and I can't wait for the paint to be done so I can start assembling
I have my follow up anatomy scan today. I am so excited to see this LO again.
Totally random, but we are supposed to have a huge ice/snowstorm this weekend and I am really hoping all the meteorologists got it wring this time. I have been looking forward to an event this Saturday at 7pm. It is supposed to be a super fun fitness class with instructors from Belgium and Utah. I already bought my ticket, but if it's ugly outside I know I won't want to be out in that weather.
@mcvgal: I hear you! There was a yoga class I was looking forward to last Sat that got cancelled because of weather here. I was pretty bummed. Plan for the worst, hope for the best, right? Would they reschedule/postpone the event or would it just be cancelled?
@SKZW I hope they would reschedule, especially if it's cancelled due to the flights not being able to come into town.
@KMD1106 baby was just moving around a lot last time, we got to see all the chamber of the heart and all limbs, but the MFM wanted to see more detail on all organs. He said last time that everything looks good but he just wanted to double check today. I have monthly ultrasounds now due to previous prenatal history, so I am sure he just wanted take advantage of this months ultrasound for more detail. All remaining ultrasounds will be simply checking on growth and lungs since I am high risk for another preemie.
@mcvgal - that sounds like a fun event! Hopefully snow passes by or is at least not as bad as projected! And GL on your scan today.
DS is back to school and DD is still in bed. It's strangely quite in the house for being morning time. I love it. I'm debating whether to read my book or get some cleaning done.

Ok, super dumb question: what do you use compression socks for?
Today I scored a maternity winter coat for >50% off! It was still $100--a ripoff for wearing it for one season, IMO--BUT I'll try to sell it on Kijiji if it's in good shape next fall. I also got the pants I'm going to start living in. Full price (blargh) but super comfy. Last pregnancy, I went to basically non-stop wearing a maternity maxi skirt in the third trimester, but I don't know how the weather will be in the spring.
I'm also trying to decide if I'm going to go in a conference room over lunch and write a sex scene for my romance novel, but I feel so wroooong about it, lol. I definitely can't do it in public on the train. Man, am I prude or what.

Okay, the light headed-ness hit again this morning. I am definitely anxious to bring it up to the Dr. Do you guys know of anything to help combat it? Feeling faint at work sucks!
@nda_roxybabe , I'm sorry, that does suck. I've found that when it happens to me, I'm usually dehydrated and it gets better with a bunch of water. Did you give your doctor a call? There is no harm in at least having a conversation with a nurse who could give you other suggestions or try to get you in to see the doctor soon.
@nda_roxybabe I frequently had lightheadedness last pregnancy and even blacked out a couple times. Sometimes it was related to position changes (I went from sitting to standing) but other times it was for no reason. My doctor did blood work at my next appt just to make sure everything was normal, which it was, and she said it can be a very common thing in pregnancy. Our hearts are working double time pumping all the extra blood we have and hormones are changing how everything works. Our best geuss was in those moments my BP was lower as it tends to run on the lower side not pregnant.
@nda_roxybabe - Change positions slowly (lying to sitting up, sitting to standing) to give your heart a chance to catch up. Like PPs said, stay hydrated. You might even try a snack. Maybe your blood sugar is a little low?
@sls - Compression socks basically help improve circulation in your lower legs. This can help prevent varicose veins and blood clots. Good for pregnant women and people who are either sitting for long periods of time (like on a plane) or on their feet all day (like nurses).
Well done one finding a discount maternity coat! They're so expensive!
We had a snow day today and it was my favorite kind. I didn't think it was coming so I was presently surprised at 6am with the text that the university was closed until noon and then at 10:30 we received another text that we were closed the rest of the day. So instead of lazing in my pjs I actually got stuff done this morning thinking I would be going in at noon.
@sls my mom is a Nurse and she gets her compression socks (knee high) from CVS/Walgreens for a lot chepaer then other places and she has never had problems with them
suggestions needed ....... It was recently suggested by my Dr to go on a low sodium diet due to really bad swelling I was having. I have been doing it for a little under a week and the results have been amazing, i literally have no swelling in my hands, feet, face, lower legs anymore. Physically I feel amazing. However, mentally for some reason its been so hard on me, and i'm to the point where I seriously just hate to even think about needing to eat anything. I guess because I feel like everything I eat is bland... I'm trying different recipes and spices.... If it keeps up i'll call my dr just to make sure things are ok, but can having a serious swing in caloric intake cause problems for the baby? I am trying my best to eat as much fruits and veggies as I can but at this point i have no appetite and i'm forcing myself to eat.
Yay on the discount maternity wear! I've been needing maternity pants so bad this time but there aren't a ton of options where I live except a destination maternity store so yesterday I had some time to go in and there were two pairs of "beyond the bump" yoga pants on the clearance rack. I've never heard of these but they were each originally over $100 apiece and I got both for $70.66 total but when I showed DH he thought they were hideous (just two different black/white patterns). But I told him how hard they were to find in the first place so he took it upon himself to call around to a couple stores to ask if they carry maternity sizes and even looked online and found some pants styles on gap that were a little more basic design and okayed me to spend almost $100 instead lol. I don't even spend $50 each on pants normally so I'm hoping to resell after too!
@BeachMommy2B I'm sorry, that stinks! I'm glad the low sodium is making you feel better, though! Herbs can really add a lot of flavor to things, but I'm not sure what you have already tried? With chicken- Rosemary is traditional, but I like baking it with chopped apples, thyme and pepper. Vegetables- most are good with garlic (I know people have pretty strong preferences about garlic, though.) parsley can freshen them up a little, but isn't a super strong flavor. I don't like oregano, but a lot of people like it in veggies! Curry is super delicious, and is a nice strong flavor if you're feeling like foods are too bland. I love salmon filets, drizzle with a little molasses, dust with a little curry and ginger. Bake at 350 for about 20 min, depends on size of salmon. Really good on top or rice- then you stir a little of the extra sauce into the rice, and it doesn't need extra seasoning either! If you google seasoning parings, you'll probably find a lot! As for baby's health, as long as you're taking your prenatal, baby should be fine. My dr said that if you're worried you're not eating enough, you would start to feel lightheaded and other effects of hunger wile baby is still fine. Baby takes from you, while food replenishes your stores. So, baby is more likely to leave you anemic or low on calcium rather than being behind on those nutrients themselves. So, take your vitamins!
There's also meal planning thread just below this one that may help you out!
And, now I've realized that this is super long! Sorry!
@nda_roxybabe I have the same dizzy, light headed feeling. It's not fun at all! It usually has to do with my blood pressure that runs naturally pretty low and then even lower during pregnancy. Lots of water, small snacks throughout the day, and changing positions slowly! Doesn't hurt to check with your doctor too, I was anemic with DD1 and that sometimes plays into it too.

@BeachMommy2B That sucks. Like others said herbs can help, but I understand just wanting to avoid food when everything you can eat is nothing you want. I am not creative, so I like pre-mixed spices. Penzeys spice has some of the best salt free options. Mural of flavor is freakin fabulous! Hope it gets easier for you.
@Louise_Belcher: Totally agree with everything in that article link you posted! It's an ongoing struggle (kids' toys aside!) to keep our possessions in check. I'd love to have everything 100 percent following "a place for everything, everything in its place" but some things are just impossible. Like, where do I keep my sunglasses case when the sunglasses are on my head? On the counter. What about the vitamins I need to take every day, that if they were put back into the cabinet, I'd never see and never take? On the counter. Phones and tablets? On their chargers on the counter or near the couch, but not in a specific place. What about notebooks I'm using to jot random things? On my desk, along with 30 other pieces of paper that need something done with and can't be filed away or thrown out yet. It's draining even thinking about staying on top of this stuff!
@BeachMommy2B Trader Joe's also has a yummy salt-free spice blend called 21 Seasoning Salute. Maybe try out some homemade taco seasoning and omit the salt?
@SKZW You are speaking my language! It is a constant struggle between wanting everything to be put away and actually being able to live in my home. I constantly have at least one or more donate box going. There are already things we received from Christmas in the current one.
@BeachMommy2B , I'm sorry you are dealing with a low sodium diet. Bland food really sucks. I echo the suggestions above to try some new spices. Maybe look online for some low sodium cooking blogs? There have to be people dealing with similarly sucky situations.
@Louise_Belcher and @SKZW, I strive for minimalism, too, but it is SO tough with kiddos! And a husband who has a hard time throwing things out. I feel like I am constantly decluttering. It is literally a never ending battle.
I PASSED MY GLUCOSE TEST!! I am so, so excited. With my first pregnancy, I took the 1 hour once and the 3 hour TWICE and was diagnosed at 35 weeks with borderline GD that I had to monitor glucose levels, etc for the last few weeks of my pregnancy it was just such a miserable overall experience. I was fully prepared to fail this one and have been stressing about it for weeks...I want to throw a party!
@nda_roxybabe, I think it's normally 24-26 weeks? I had to take mine early because of my history with my last pregnancy. And I was so worried because my weight gain is basically mirroring what happened with my son (literally 0 pounds gained from my starting weight) and I was convinced history was repeating itself...chocolate cake for me tonight!
@nda_roxybabe according to my paper work I should receive the lab slip at my 28 week appointment. I did the 1 hour a few weeks ago due to my blind spot, but they are having me do the normal one at 28 weeks still.
I have a baby app (Ovia) that lets you choose the most random categories. Weird animals, Parisian bakery, fun and games (GI Joes, jacks, yoyo). I think it's all so inconsistent.
Random: My MIL is mad that my sister and mom set my baby shower on her birthday. She's told me she isn't sure if she will able to make it... I guess that's better than her coming and making the baby shower her birthday party, which I am sure she would do.
@fbmandy55: my family & my in-laws are actually great together, they get along, there's no drama, if we're in town we gather them altogether for meals or whatever, etc. ... and even then, they don't know each other's birthdays! That's kind of a weird thing to be upset about. Like, there’s 24 hours in a birthday. It's not like if she attended a shower, she'd have no time to do her own celebrating, right?
Or is she expressing frustration at them but meaning it for you, like, how could you do that to her? I'd say, let it slide. She'll get over it. It's just one day.
And if she's gonna be a grump, then having her not there might be okay?
I have had the worst headache since yesterday and just can't get it to go away. I'm staying hydrated and even broke down and took some Tylenol but nothing is working. I have also been very nauseous. I have an appointment this afternoon and plan to bring it up to my doctor because this has happened before.
On the plus side, I think I finally felt this LO last night!
