Speaking of night time duties, I was thinking about feedings and have a question for moms who've breastfed. How quickly did you also introduce a bottle?
I think I did it backwards compared to most people, but I EP for right at 4 months so the twins got bottles as soon as they came off of feeding tubes. Once they were 4 months we started doing more than a once daily practice latch and they nursed like champs by 6 months, DD still needed twice daily high cal bottles.
I could have just gotten lucky (and this is probably a UO), but I don't 100% believe nipple confusion is a thing. I plan to introduce a bottle soon with this baby too.
I agree that nipple confusion isn't a thing. I didn't start pumping before 8 weeks because I was worried about oversupply. This time I'll start a little earlier than that. I want the baby to get used to someone else giving him a bottle. DD struggled to take a bottle when I went back to work.
Thanks for your input everyone! We'll figure it out I'm sure and then the twins will change it all again! Good news is dd went down easily again tonight and we got takeout so weve had an easy evening
I dont think nipple confusion is a thing either... I can't remember when i started pumping i think around a week BC she wouldnt take one side at first and i didnt want to get engorged but dd had no problem with switching between nursing, bottles, or paci.

I don't have an answer because I'm a FTM, but I'm glad you asked that. DH has mentioned a few times that he'd like to have the option of bottle feeding as soon as possible. I know he wants to share the feeding duties as a type of bonding with baby thing. I'm happy to give the baby bottles as soon as we can, but I want the breastfeeding option, too. I did read recently that nipple confusion is something that's been debunked - maybe it was more of an issue before the slow flow nipples were created.

@jayandplus I'm not sure if this is nipple confusion but both my SIL recently had some issues. My one is a SAHM and doesn't pump unless she is away from the baby and has only done it a few times. But her daughter who was born mid July JUST took a bottle the other day for the first time. My other SIL started pumping early and would pump then bottle feed her the breast milk and her baby, who was born mid August, won't feed from her breast unless it is first thing in the am and she's sleepy. Idk what either might be an example of, but they can be picky babies!
I started pumping once a day around 2 weeks old (typically the before bed feed) and DH would give her a bottle with whatever I pumped. I didn't really want her to depend on breastfeeding for her bedtime routine because once I went back to work DH would be the one doing bedtimes. We never had any issue with nipple confusion or trouble taking a bottle or breast.
I wasn't sure where to post this so I'm posting here on this thread. So on Friday morning I lost part of (or all? I'm not sure) my mucus plug. I had light spotting with pink blood for a few hours after. Minimal old blood spotting for the next 2 days. Nothing even worthy of a pad. No contractions or any "weirdness" so I opted to wait for my appointment this morning. (Sunday)
While getting ready to go to my routine doctors appointment this morning, I had a gush of fluid that soaked my underwear and ran down my leg followed with a brownish/yellow mucus discharge. I rushed off to the hospital and saw the doctor immediately before doing my scheduled gestational diabetes test.
She did a physical exam where she could see quite a bit of colored mucus discharge and it at least appeared my cervix was still closed. She didn't want to actually touch it for a physical exam so as not to "disturb" anything just in case. They did a swab for amniotic fluid which came up negative as well as swabs for infections. Still waiting on that.
She sent me for an ultrasound that showed the baby is healthy and my amniotic fluid is good levels.
We proceeded with the gestational diabetes testing; Since i was there and had already fasted. Will get those results when they come in.
I met with my doctor again before I left and she told me to stay home for 2 days and rest. Move as little as possible and keep a pad on to monitor discharge. She's not exactly sure what the fluid is yet (if it's anything) but I have clear instructions what to watch for and what do if anything else happens. If anything happens she told me to go to labor and delivery instead of the women's clinic.
She said I can go back to work Tuesday if nothing happens and to just take it easy. She went over what would happen if I go into labor early and how they can try and stop it so that made me feel better. She is a wonderful doctor who I feel very confident with.
She diagnosed me with threatened pre-term labor. So now we just wait.
I have a pre-scheduled follow-up with the maternal fetal medicine doctor scheduled in two weeks (not related but glad I have an extra appointment) and another appointment with OB in 3 weeks. She said we'll be doing more appointments closer together starting now as opposed to waiting till later on.
I've never been so scared or panicked in my life but glad right now that baby is moving a ton and still in there cooking.
Has anyone else been diagnosed with this? I'm 25 weeks. Had something similar that the fluid could be? It 100% wasn't urine. I know that much. I'm in bed now watching tv and just chilling. Physically I feel fine but my mind is going about a billion miles a minutes

@sarah0985 oh man, I'm so sorry. That must have been super scary. I'm kinda in the same boat right now and it's hard not to think about the worst case scenario. Just know that you've done everything you can to keep you and that baby safe, and that the doctors are on top of it.
I've been setting myself mini goals to help my brain settle. Instead of thinking about how far I am from my due date, I've set some milestones that I count up to. Like, "I'm one week closer to viability". Once I hit 24 weeks, every week will be one week closer to 30. It's really helped not settle into a negative spiral of what-if. Every week the baby cooks is that much better for him, and if he comes early I'll cross that bridge then.
Are they going to be doing more regular ultrasounds with your appointments to keep an eye on the amniotic fluid? It's awesome that you are confident with your medical team and that there is a good plan going forward. I'll keep you in my T&P. Take good care of yourself. ((((Hugs)))

At a minimum, nipple confusion is an exaggerated thing. What IS a thing is having a kid who never takes a bottle because you never introduced one before 8 weeks...or didn't do it often enough. When you get to 4-6 wks (or sooner, even) practice ith bottles every now and again or else!

yikes and good luck! You should make this its own post. This didn't happen to me but for people I've known they've either delivered healthy (pr eventually healthy) preemies (even around your stage) or they have stayed put for much longer and delivered a baby to close on time (also healthy.)
ETA: I misread this and thought it was pre-term, not threatened. I've known more people in this category and they have tended to stay pregnant for ~40 wks.
@cherrybananas I like the thinking about how close we are as opposed to how far we are. I know the odds are on our side if it did happen now but I'm just so nervous now. She didn't say what the next appointment will entail. Only what will happen if something happens before then. I didn't get an opportunity to even think to that point. But I'm glad I'll be being seen more often now just in case.
@kat81 I'm praying I'm part of that group that stays pregnant to full term. I'm usually a pretty calm person who will fall apart after everything but totally lost it on my way to the hospital when I was calling my husband and again with the nurse and with the doctor.

@jayandaplus oh you must be asking about my son who I called Captain Crappy Latch. Holy hell it was miserable. There was no LC in our hospital when he was born and by the time we were discharged I was a mess. We actually hired a private LC to come to our house at about 1w post partum and at that point I was at my wits end. My husband literally had to hold me down sometimes when baby latched so I wouldn't jump and flinch too badly. Lots of blood and bruising and misshaping.
The LC showed me some better techniques and we had some improvement but he never really was great. She came back for a follow up and by then at least the bleeding had stopped but I was still bruising a bit and my nipple was weirdly shaped after nursing which apparently showed he wasn't latched normally? At that point she more or less threw her hands up and said maybe it's a tongue tie, good luck. He didn't have a tie or anything but eventually with better technique and my body getting used to things it stopped being painful.
Bottles were another battle. He did take some motn from my mom at about 1 and 6 weeks but during the day was trickier. My husband and him had a miserable time. I stated buying different bottles and everything else but it turns out it was more that if he knew the boob was available he wouldn't take the bottle. Since my husband was too afraid to be left at home with a bottle and the baby he wanted a practice session as home but I swear the kid just knew and would lose his shit
Also a big part was probably confidence and patience. Daycare had no problems with him so I'm guessing it was more anxiety and giving up too easy on our end. The only bottle that really was a problem was the medela ones that came with the pump. The standard nipple in the pump set is wayyyyy too fast. For a newborn if you turn the bottle upside down and liquid comes out steadily it's too fast. I think he was gagging on those when we tried. A regular 1 nipple worked fine.
@sarah0985 I will be crossing everything that baby stays put. This was my experience with PTL, twins do like to come earlier than they are supposed to so take that into consideration.
Last pregnancy I lost mine at 26 weeks, I went into labor at 28 weeks, had it stopped, and went home 2 days later (babies looked great, and was only 1 cm dilated). I did bed rest at home and at 31+ 6 started thinking I was leaking something with contractions every 20 minutes. My contractions were actually every 2-3 minutes, baby As bag was bulging and leaking, I was 3 cm. At that point I got 2 rounds of steroid shots and was placed on Magnesium sulfate and other fluids. They were able to slow the contractions to 16 minutes so I was moved to Antepartum. I stayed there until I was 34 weeks when DS's water broke and they moved me back to L&D and then to the OR.
Basically, call for everything at this point would be my advice.
@vrj0522 and @jen_shoes Thank you. @chickyclg that's basically what she kind of explained they would do if anything else happened. I'm glad yours turned out ok. I'll definitely be going in if anything else happens. Things work a little differently here (UAE) and they don't really do nurses line. I asked about it today. She said I can call and ask to speak to a nurse but generally they say to come in regardless.

@sarah0985 Yikes, that's scary. I'm so sorry you've had to go through that already, but it sounds like you have a good system in place going forward. I hope your next 15 weeks are uneventful and your baby arrives on time.
Today I have a bit of a vent/ rant. I am feeling super discouraged, and am comparing my kiddos to everyone else! For example on Facebook today someone shared requesting learning activities for their 19mo who knows his whole alphabet and how to count to ten. Guys my almost 3yr old recognizes only two letters (occasionally a third one) and counts objects up to 4. Another friend posted about her 10mo who is "finally!" Saying mama. When my 15mo is saying, nothing. Ugh. On the one side it makes me second guess my parenting- should I be doing flash cards and "school" activities with my older kid? On the other side, I'm like are my kids just super slow? Or are these people super exaggerating their kid's achievements? (Not the saying mama kid, that's totally age appropriate for sure.) Like maybe this kid can sing his ABCs, and she's counting that as knowing them? Anyone else with older kids, when did your kiddo recognize their letters and count objects? Should I be focusing more on that? Feel free to ignore my crazy!
@Squirtgun I know that feeling, I have several friends who's 23 month olds recognize and can say fucking sight words. I try not compare but shit it's hard. My kids are the oldest in the bunch, DD is right where she should be and DS does have some delays. I try not to compare DS at all since I know he is cognitively 10 months behind (We are beginning ASD and SPD testing), but DD doesn't do any of that either. Every now and then she surprises me with things she knows, but she doesn't know her ABC's or her 123's or anything like that.
@Squirtgun Don't be discouraged! I think being a mom today comes with so much more criticism simply because of social media! People only share the "good news" on social media, we don't hear about how her child also probably threw a tantrum for 20 minutes straight over her banana being cut into pieces instead of eating it whole...
I'm sure your doing great, and your kids are great! My girls are completely different and it's not like my parenting style has changed in between the two of them... DD1 is that kid who could recite her ABCs at 1. DD2 on the other hand, no matter how much I try, has absolutely zero interest in letting me sit down and help her with colors, letters, or anything! She's more stubborn than her sister. Every child is different!

@Squirtgun I think the internet brings way too much comparison and worry. If you are concerned there is nothing wrong with asking your kids' doctor about their development. That's something they should address at all appointments but if you have more questions go ahead and ask them. It sounds to me like they are in the normal range, the age ranges for milestones are pretty wide!) but I also am not a doc so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
FWIW those chatterbox 2 year olds are great for bragging but also kind of a PITA. I love my son but he is non stop. I would kill for some quiet. I promise those moms are only giving you part of the story. They can suck it.
@squirtgun at 15 months I would absolutely not worry. We had an occasional word here and there and used a few signs so she could ask for milk, food, mama or daddy. She all of a sudden started talking more around 2 and is now stringing sentences at 2y4m. Some other kids from her BMB are more advanced and some are not as much, and there is also a variety in what some of them can say or do, and how well. Its hard to know whats really "normal" but its at important to know what is very delayed that they need intervention. Go with your instinct instead of comparing.
@pshaortao yeah, 15mo old is in therapy/ early intervention, so with her it stinks to see how great other kids are doing sometimes, but it's easier to not compare.
And thanks everyone, older daughter does talk really well and stuff, so I guess she does just have other interests than the FB wonder kids!
@h&Pmomma- haha, so I guess I should FB share older daughter's meltdown about needing her sandwich to be triangles, NOT squares, to make all the other moms feel better about their kids
@Squirtgun yeah please do not worry about any of this academic stuff. The researchers believe that we shouldn't be teaching kids to read until they're 7 yet we basically are trying to get them started at 3 or 4.
I would be tempted to be freaked out by this but with a kid who has emotional and behavioral issues I am really zen. He is also behind academically in kindergarten (has made little to no progress on reading) in spite of having a high IQ score (intelligence testing was part of his larger testing that he did for the other stuff.) But you know what? He has some friends and the teacher likes him. That is victory. And both kids are alive and physically healthy. Everything will be ok.
@h&Pmomma- haha, so I guess I should FB share older daughter's meltdown about needing her sandwich to be triangles, NOT squares, to make all the other moms feel better about their kids
One day squares are cool, the next day triangles clearly should be done! That's real life toddler drama there! Toddler/preschool minds baffle me, and my degree is in Early Childhood Education so you'd think I'd understand haha

I am starting to get overwhelmed at how excited my family is for this baby. Yes, it's the first grandchild and I'm happy they are excited, but can we take it down a notch? All weekend all I heard was how excited they are to hold the baby and how they just want to see the baby and what sex the baby is and what they are going to do with the baby. And the squealing, O M G. I'm pretty sure they are more excited than H or I have been so far. Anyone else have overwhelming family?
ETA now that my computer is cooperating with me...@sarah0985 I'm happy everything checked out and crossing my fingers everything else stays where it should for now!
@absbubbs I am on the opposite end of that. This baby will be the second grandchild on both sides and I feel like no one is excited but me. Take the excitement now, because it may not happen again.
Anyone feel like their pregnancy pillow is just a bit too bulky? I got a Back N Belly. In theory, I really like it, but I feel like it's just a little too puffed up to enjoy using all the time. My head, especially, is much more elevated than with my normal pillow. I think I'm going to open up a seam and remove some fluff.
@starphish18 I had a love hate relationship with my Snoogle Loop, now it's tossed off the side of the bed and I've been using a $10 body pillow from Target.
@starphish18@chickyclg same with my Snoogle. I get really bad neck pain and headaches sometimes so when I feel it getting bad I ditch the snoogle and just use regular pillows. I've also been contemplating taking a seam out and removing some of the foam as well. I love it except for the head and neck part.

FWIW those chatterbox 2 year olds are great for bragging but also kind of a PITA. I love my son but he is non stop. I would kill for some quiet. I promise those moms are only giving you part of the story. They can suck it.
