for PP: you are going to spend a lot of time at home just totally topless for the first few weeks. But nursing tanks (like the target ones) are great, and I swear by layering them under cardigans and/or button up flannels or chambray type shirts.
leggings, jeggings, sweatpants, and unfortunately keep your maternity jeans etc around. As far as shirts go- if you can pull it down or lift it up easily and fully, it will work.
An overnight nursing bra is good to have ready. You will need it. Bamboobies too. As far as dropping lots of money on a good nursing bra- definitely do, but wait till your supply regulates so that it fits properly. You also won't know yet about possible obstacles (i.e.: some people who want to won't be able to nurse, some will need to pump a lot from the beginning & will need a pumping bra, etc).
Food help...cleaning help...some pampering for mom. Also good to think about.
ETa: just read through the early babies thread and someone totally needs to make a thread dedicated to PP clothing & nursing wear.
@Schell2013 Thanks so much for your response. And yeah, we moved him to have the nursery furniture for baby. Granted, baby will be in our room for the first 8 weeks or so (which, as you say, will cause DS1 to regress even more).
I'm with you on the backwards lock. I have a coworker who put a baby gate on his daughter's door to keep her in, but I don't like that even. If he needs out, I want him to be able to get out.
I just don't want to cave and have him in our bed at this point, because we made it almost three years without - and it's been a rough 3 years in terms of sleep because he's not a good sleeper. So, it's taken a lot of diligence on our behalf. But, at some point I feel like I'm going to just let him in so I can sleep, and then it will be a years' long habit.
FWIW, no judgment of those who choose to bed share, it's just not something I'm interested in. My brother's 8 and 3 year olds sleep in bed with SIL still, and he's been relegated to the couch at night due to lack of space. It's causing them both a lot of stress, and that weighs on my mind.
@littlewillie2016 I got a flu shot because the flu can be deadly for infants and those with compromised immune systems. The whole "guessing on the strain thing" is only true if you consider guessing to be tons of evidence based medical research that allows scientists to make pretty accurate predictions on which strains will be most common in the future. Obviously, there's no crystal ball so they can't know with certainty, but calling it guessing is, IMO, just a result of the general public not really understanding how vaccines work and the benefits of them. Also I got the flu once (didn't get a flu shot that year because there was a shortage and I am healthy so there were others it was more of a priority for) and it was horrible. I legit had auditory hallucinations because I was so sick. I've gotten a flu shot ever since. I can't imagine a baby having to experience that so I'm happy to do what I can to prevent it.
@littlewillie2016 I never get a flu shot either, but the doctor had it and said I should get one to help protect the baby. If it'll help him possibly not get it, then I'm all for it. I would feel really bad if I didn't get the shot and then he had the flu later on.

@littlewillie2016 I usually do not get the flu shot, but it is pretty routine around here for pregnant women to get it. Sounds like some of the protections pass to baby. For that it's worth a crazy sore shoulder for a day! We do have DD get one yearly.
@F47 that is tough we've also been able to avoid bed sharing, but sleep regressions can be so so tough. Is DS's bed big enough for one of you to slip in with him for a bit? We had a tough period too after we moved and we did a few nights laying next to DD while she drifted off, then a few nights of laying down for a few minutes but leaving before she was awake. That got her back on track. I am a little worried about another episode once baby is here.
This is NBR, but I think I have to ask my boss about being promoted. The new hire we had was fired because she was awful at the job. I was annoyed that she was hired in above me, but she did have (supposedly) 15+ years of experience. I've never asked for a promotion before and I'm nervous! I know at least showing interest in the position is a good thing...the timing is just awkward with being so close to maternity leave. But I feel if I don't ask now, someone will be hired in before I get back in January. Promotions don't go into affect until April so it's not like I'd be coming right back into it. If anyone's confronted their boss before about a promotion, tips are appreciated!! Ekkkk!

This! Also when we got ours they offered either the 3-strain or 4-strain vaccine. We opted for the 4-strain seeing how I don't want to take any chances with the baby and why not, it was covered the same under insurance. The 3-strain are the 3 most likely to break out and the 4th is one that might but they're not as sure about. So it's not like you're betting on one type and if it's wrong the vaccine is useless or something. It covers you for the 3/4 most likely strains.
@ibabyloveb87 go for it!! Worst they can say is no, but I think it would be in your best interest to at least bring it up and let them know were you stand. Go in with confidence, prepared with your list of responsibilities and your work ethic and knock it out of the park!!
Married 11-11-11 TTC only since Dec 2015. I had some weight to get off. Been working hard in the gym for over a year. BFP 02-15-16 with our first IT'S A BOY!!!
@littlewillie2016 I personally get the flu shot every year because I have young children, and I would always ALWAYS rather be safe than sorry. I've said this a hundred times before, and I'll say it a hundred more- If preventatives are available, why NOT take them? If there is a chance that your risk of catching and spreading the flu virus can be decreased, why on earth not take that chance? Just my take on things, and I feel the same with all vaccines.
@F47 Call me a monster, but when DD went through that phase, she got a big, fat "Go back to bed Addison". Sometimes she even got her door locked. She stopped coming in, still loves us, and isn't emotionally traumatized so I would say those methods were a success.
@ibabyloveb87 Go for it! I always try to look at myself through my manager's eyes so that I can address any concerns they may have. Will they interview for the position soon or wait until closer to April?
@annabenanna ... Appropriately timed question. I just got a text from my bestie (her baby is 1.5 wks old now) telling me to get lots of nursing tanks. She said she has 3 and it's not enough.
@kaessi I also had a sex dream last night...about Jim Gaffigan!! Talk about random... I mean, I love Jim Gaffigan, I think he's hilarious and my husband and I are big fans of his show and stand up. Buuuuut, a sex dream? Believe it or not, I rarely have sex dreams to begin with...so when I do, I get Jim Gaffigan? Where's Chris Pine??
@annabenanna If you're planning to nurse long-term, you'll definitely want a few nursing bras. I've also used front-clip bras, but, while that works fine in the house, they're much more difficult to maneuver if you're nursing in public (especially if you nurse under a cover). For night nursing, I just bought some stretchy nursing bras from Amazon (sort of like these: https://smile.amazon.com/Lamaze-Cotton-Spandex-Nursing-Maternity/dp/B00ARKNVDQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1474552053&sr=8-5&keywords=nursing+bra&th=1) mostly because I didn't want to leak all over the bed. I only own one top made specifically for nursing, but I did make sure every top or dress I bought for the first year and a half of my son's life would work for nursing. I have a lot of stretchy knit tops and v-neck tank dresses. Shirts with buttons work too.
@littlewillie2016 I get the flu shot every year since the year before I got pregnant with my first. Like @AllyTheKid said, if science has provided possible prevention, I'm going to take advantage of it.
@ibabyloveb87 Good luck asking for the promotion! Your reasoning makes sense. I'd be nervous, too, but it sounds like you know you deserve the promotion. And your boss may be more receptive to it since the outside hire was disastrous.
@ibabyloveb87 I asked my boss for a promotion a few years ago, and I got it! What I did was email him letting him know I'd like to set up a meeting to discuss my position, and my future at the company. I explained that I felt I'd gained the experience necessary to be given more responsibility, and that I was interested in getting his thoughts prior to my annual review. I think in my email I included a few of my work successes, and my vision
for advancement. I also threw in some stuff about my dedication to the
company, and my desire to be here long-term. For reference, my review was due in August, but he moved it up to June because of my email, and that's when I was promoted.
@F47 I'm with you on the bed sharing. IMHO at 3 they are too big and move too much. Good luck with whatever you decide, I really hope he figures it out soon! Every kid is so different. Some are so much tougher than others.

All, thanks for the promotion advice!! I went in and talked to her and didn't even need my list of reasons because she's already thought about it and was going to recommend my promotion! WOOHOO!! Ditto. Our local weather celebrity said we'd be in the 80s by the weekend, and gave the chart to prove it. But then he had to have a disclaimer saying that we've seen 90 degree weather in the past into mid-October, so we need to hope for cooler weather but be prepared incase it goes back up for a week or two.
I'm soooo ready for Hocus Pocus and pumpkins and cinnamon tea and boots and scarves and being able to eat dinner outside on a nice cool evening.
The weather so needs to cool down. I am out of breath and swollen when walking outside for a bit. I still have 5 weeks left of this pregnancy and hope they aren't miserable ones...
Aw, great news @ibabyloveb87 !! I didn't even get a chance to lend my advice...way to go for what you want!! I hope it works out - and will make coming back after baby a little easier because of the exciting new responsibilities!
Happy Autumn everyone!! My autumn baby is welcome to arrive any day now it is super hot here too through the weekend! It's going up to 86 today. I saw this morning (when I couldn't sleep) that it was already 80 in New Orleans at 5am
Yes so happy it's Fall!! But yea Florida needs to embrace the change of season with some cooler temps please! Normally I start drinking my pumpkin beer and hard cider to at least pretend it's fall-ish outside
@Schell2013, ooooh lulus! I may have to splurge on some nice leggings for postpartum. I was actually checking out Blanqi, the MotherTucker leggings and just other compression high-waisted leggings I found online. Do you have a suggestion for nursing tanks? Thanks for the heads up on the stool softener! I actually have a 10 pack box of colace in my hospital bag. Did you take them before delivery, after? and yes, I have a scheduled C-section on Thursday, 10/6.... but on Monday 9/26 we will attempt an ECV. Fingers crossed!
@NoraAurora , I will have to check out those target tanks! I have $60 worth of credit from Target and that would put it to good use. Do you have a favorite brand of pp leggings you recommend? Also, I saw those bamboobies a few weeks back and at $35 they are reasonable...however I found other brands on Amazon for $15. Do you know if there is a huge difference in quality?
@LMNOBaby OMG Jim Gaffigan sex dream! I'm LOLing at my desk and now thanks to you am picturing him in bed. NOT very sexy.
@ignoscemihi, that bra looks so comfy!!! I'm gonna scope it out some more on Amazon, see if they have one on Prime. It's not pricey either! Thanks so much.
@ibabyloveb87 - YAY!!! A promotion and a baby??? Girl I'm jealous! Congratulations!
@annabenanna I just took the stool softners after baby was out. Here they won't discharge you until you've pooped once. In regards to nursing tanks or shirts I love my thyme maternity ones. I am in Canada though so I am not sure if they're outside here or not. I've also gotten one from target and liked it, but found the target ones fit small.

My hospital discharged me before I pooped and I really wish they hadn't. I was so freaked out about ripping my stitches that I couldn't go for four days and by then I was so uncomfortable that I almost cried. It was fine after that, but that was a lot of unnecessary anxiety.
scostel2 I understand that the mismatch or "guessing" isn't for lack of trying by scientists and that influenza is a difficult virus. I have not gotten the flu since I was a kid, but the flu shot doesn't immunize against the stomach flu - it's for influenza. I know the benefits of vaccines but I am just not sold on a shot of something that will only protect me 30-50%, which I guess is still better than nothing. I respect people who get them and I am considering it more now than ever because of my baby. Just trying to see how important it is to you mamas, and I can see it seems important. I am in favour of vaccinations and have had many for my job, just not sold on the flu vaccine. I will ask my Dr tomorrow for more advice. Thanks.
I am SO happy it's fall! I used to love fall when I lived in PA but in Germany it's usually rainy and drab. That will probably still come, but right now it's in the 50s at night and around 70 during the day with glorious sunshine. After 8 weeks of living in humid hell I AM SO HAPPY!
Also, I don't know where to post this, so I'm going with the randoms thread. I did a selfish bitchy thing AND I'M PROUD OF IT. So, I mentioned my parents wanted to visit the baby right after it's born, but because I don't get along with my parents I didn't want them sitting on my couch 12 hours a day judging me while I struggle to get on board with all of the stuff one deals with in the first couple of weeks PP. I told them not to come repeatedly but last night I got a message with their tentative plane reservations to come just after the second week. Well. I just found out DH will be gone for work the second week of November. I would still prefer them not to come at all but now I can tell them that if their intentions truly are to support me, they can come 2 weeks later. This gives me 2 extra weeks to get into a schedule and heal, PLUS I am doing the US and the world a service by getting them out of the country on election day. They were trying to play off their visit as them SUPPORTING me. Now let's see if they actually do it.
I see a lot of you are getting a flu shot. Is this something you get annually or are just getting because you're having a baby? I have never gotten one before and wasn't planning on it, but am open to hear why I should. I just heard that it often doesn't do any good since 'they' are just guessing which strain is going to go around that year.
My OB strongly recommends the flu shot for pregnant women, since it helps you pass immunity on to your baby, who is too young to get the flu shot. I've had the flu shot every year since 2011, when I was pregnant with DD2.
tl;dr: The flu is serious stuff, especially for people with compromised or weak immune systems, like your newborn. You getting the flu shot can save your LO's life, literally. Talk to your doctor. Get the shot.

The CDC doesn't just "guess" at the strains; they do extensive study, with the WHO and other national organizations, and run a ton of predictive models to determine what strains should be included. And even if there are other active strains, there's evidence that the flu shot may provide some protection against them as well. Here's more info for you:
