Wow, am I behind in Bump and World News activity... One of our dogs was throwing up all night, up till 4 a.m. By 7 a.m. she was her bright eyed, tail wagging self. DH and I, on the other hand, were not. We are going to have a very hard time adjusting to broken sleep patterns.
@FishyMom - I love the idea of mint for gender neutral. We're either going to mint or sage depending on how much I like the various paint samples. Here's my current inspiration:
while i would probably never (never say never) participate in a "riot" or a peaceful protest gone awry, i think it is difficult to judge the actions of people who feel completely hopeless, unjustly persecuted, and disenfranchised.
i wish things always went as planned and stayed calm, but when dealing with human emotions and what people feel is unjustifiable death with a continued lack of repercussions it's gonna get messy.
also sadly your probably have a lot more to lose than most of those people. i mean i could give a full dissertation to why this is happening. but i will spare everyone.
i think @Amber_Waves was correct when she said it's best to judge not.
Me: 36, H: 37 FTM, 2 Furbabies married 03/17/07 lived in Houston, Austin, Los Angeles and NYC due: 2/15/17
@Amber_Waves oh yeah I definitely agree our country is currently a mess right now and it certainly isn't our place to judge. And there are so many different stories going around! It's hard to tell which news outlet is the most truthful. Especially with all the different reports of him staying in his car reading while others say he exited with a firearm. Either way, it is such a sad and unjust death. However, I don't think setting semi trucks on fire, jumping in front of traffic, robbing Walmart, and assaulting officers completely unrelated to the incident is quite the best or a very peaceful way to get a point across.
Just got a text from DH that our other dog (not the one throwing up all night) took a bunch of bananas off the counter and ate two between me leaving for work and DH getting out of the shower. That guy had a full breakfast, while the other dog only got some chicken poaching water... sigh.
So I live In St Louis and get my prenatal care in Ferguson. yes, THAT ferguson. Two notes on this: 1. Don't believe everything you read. Here the protests were peaceful. Then cops showed up in riot gear and threw tear gas into the crowd to try to disperse them. I know bc I had tons of friends there. Most of the looting was ppl finding milk to pour over their eyes.
The papers reported the violence and terror, not the peace. Remember: people don't buy newspaper subscriptions anymore. most news $$ is from clicks and advertisers. Violence gets more clicks.
2. Cops killing black people is an epidemic and people are mad and hurting. That rage needs an outlet and it is not up to you or I to approve that Outlet. These murders go viral and it is traumatic-- literally (it can cause PTSD)
I understand being worried but nobody is after you.
oh, and re: highway protests-- when we did them the cars are part of the protest. we're mad, not suucidal. if you are more mad abt a 20 min delay than you are about police brutality, you need to examine that.
@munchie2.0 I do not like Jello (texture person) but I will try the fries if I see them. I probably will not seek it out cause of all the other yummy delicious friedness that is available. I cannot wait for my fletchers corndog!! I think this will be the last 'cheap' year at the fair because DD will be almost 3 next time we go and I am sure she will want to ride all the rides. I got a flyer in the mail yesterday, it opens in 9 days!!! eek!
@MLRocha - I love the orange accent! It's very unique and fresh. I like it.
I have not caught up on the worldly news but I will shortly. I feel like I will reserve my judgment of the situation in Charlotte until more details come out. I thought my husband mentioned that someone was also shot in Tulsa?? I need to do some reading.
Do we have a nursery thread? I think it might be time to make one if not. I didn't see it but I admittedly did not search very hard. I am really struggling with coordinating and would love some opinions.
@concreteangell no way!! I think I only know like maybe 3 other people with our name. I think it's fine on the other's I know, I just don't like it for myself haha. Teach me how to like it!
@BeckS13 I'm surprised so much of your family has it! Theoretically the general population has a 1% chance, and a first generation child of an epileptic mother has <5%.
My thoughts on hereditary problems is that I have my health imperfections, and I handle them. If my mom had the same thing, I wouldn't be mad at her because she chose to have me and I'm diabetic. Sure I'm diabetic, but I'm alive.
@FishyMom I live in Oklahoma, and yes, someone was shot in Tulsa. It's not looking good. There's footage of the guy with his hands up and everything and the officer shot him. Details are still coming out, but like I said, it's not looking good.
@Gretchypoo super well said! People are mad and I don't blame them. In most of these cases, the vast majority of protesters are peaceful. The fact that a few go farther shouldn't invalidate the main point they are trying to make. People shouldn't have to live in fear of the police.
Not to take away from the serious conversation that's going on here....but did anyone else watch This Is US last night?? OMG, I cried myself to sleep (I'm sure hormones are partly to blame here).
@FishyMom I live in Oklahoma, and yes, someone was shot in Tulsa. It's not looking good. There's footage of the guy with his hands up and everything and the officer shot him. Details are still coming out, but like I said, it's not looking good.
I saw that video and it was truly gut-wrenching. I can't believe the officer got paid leave. Why is she getting a paid vacation for killing someone? And the guy that was shot was outnumbered 4 to 1, they could've easily tackled him or tazed him if they thought he was that much of a threat. It was reported that the family is pressing charges against that officer and I hope they win. So heartbreaking.
@LivingLaVidaGinger Yes, the family is pressing charges and it looks like they've got some pretty strong evidence in their favor. Unless there's some game changer footage/evidence yet to be seen (which I highly doubt) I think they'll win.
Obviously, none of us know all details of any situation. Everyone comes to conclusions that are fueled by what gets "reported". Like someone said earlier, the media has one agenda and that's to make ratings and money. Not everything we hear on the news or social media is true or unbiased. I'll be the first to admit that I have a bias because my husband is a police officer. Everyone has some bias. Senseless acts of violence are always sad no matter who the person is. That person is a person. Period.
I know that there are some bad officers that spoil the bunch but the vast majority are trying to do a very difficult job to the best of their ability and just want to get home to their family at the end of the shift. They don't want to be faced with situations like these but it's something that happens when trying to enforce laws. No situation is as cut and dry when you're in the middle dealing with it as it is when you're on the outside having time to think and analyze. Every situation gets investigated and I know for a fact it's not a vacation when you've been faced with taking a life. I'm sorry if this was a long, unorganized mess of thoughts but I needed to get it out there. I don't normally post to make waves but just something else to think about.
@becbec28 it's so hard to see officers lumped together right now. Every night he goes to work I get scared that someone is going to retaliate because of what's going on. Right now it's a nasty cycle of fear and everyone is on edge. I wish there was an easy solution to fix all of this.
@raptormomma that's exactly what's happening and it's very scary. And unfortunately there is no easy solution to it. This past weekend they had some crazy stuff go down that doesn't normally happen where H works and just hearing about it after the fact, I never want him to leave.
@FishyMom Be sure to take a wider view than just Charlotte.
More than 70 Americans have been killed at the hands of the police so far this month.
I know about a lot of the others, I mean to see what happened in this one independently. There are so many statistics out there that can sway to one side or the other so sometimes I feel like you have to look at each event independently. The one thing I learned in my statistics class is that you can make a statistic sway anyway you want by adjusting your sample size or parameters... so I have a hard time looking at statistics in general.
@LivingLaVidaGinger Yes, the family is pressing charges and it looks like they've got some pretty strong evidence in their favor. Unless there's some game changer footage/evidence yet to be seen (which I highly doubt) I think they'll win.
I hate that this happened so close to you. It is very scary when things like this happen close to home. My husband mentioned that it looked bad... but I have not seen the footage.
@Gretchypoo wow! I had no idea the looting was because people were looking for milk to pour into their eyes. That is a perfect example of the media twisting the story. So sad.
I caught an interesting newspiece on NPR on my way home last night about gun ownership. They essentially polled people on if you own a gun and how many you own. So despite the number of guns in the US making it seem like everyone owns a gun(by numbers), only 1/4 of Americans own a gun. They went on to discuss that there are "super owners"- people who own 25-100+ guns. The interesting fact was the superowners were postulated to cause less violence then someone who just owned one gun.
I completely agree we have Race issues in the US AND we have gun issues also. AAP has statistics that show if there is a gun in the home your child/teenager is much more likely to successfully commit suicide. And not to mention what happens when young kids find guns and accidentally hurt/kill themselves or others. I am not trying to start a right to bear arms debate, I just find the statistics sad.
@scottipino I didn't know that but that's really interesting! I live in rednecksville and so many people around here own guns. I don't even know how many my dad has, but he wouldn't hurt a fly. He mostly uses them for target shooting in the backyard and he always taught my siblings and I the importance of gun safety and how they aren't toys. It's still kind of scary how easy it is for someone who is careless and uneducated on gun safety to get their hands on one though.
My UO: I don't like talking about racism, guns or abortions on here. I feel like this is my pregnant bubble to escape the real world.
I second this.
I third this! I was catching up and was all like oooh mint green nursery I have so many opinions. And then kept reading and I was like well now I feel like I can't write about the nursery colors. It's a bummer.
Not because I'm upset about the real world happening, it's just that's out there and I wanna be in here.
@scottipino I can see that those statistics make sense. I've mentioned before we live in the south, and people down here in rural areas pretty much all own guns, and I think it's safe to say multiples. My family alone has several, but my husband hunts, has a concealed weapons permit, etc.
Growing up as a kid there were always guns around, and that does not seem strange to me. I had it drilled into my head that you never touch them, never ever point them at a person, etc. Any potentially in reach were kept locked, and not loaded. Gun safety is key. I will say that no person has ever been harmed by a gun my family owns, but quite a few water moccasins have been dispatched over the years.
Not every person who owns a gun is a whacko, and often those with 5+ down here are people with antique/sentimental gun collections. One relative of mine has a case full of hunting rifles that have been passed down for generations.
That being said, the situation in our country right now is very sad, and extremely complex. I just think it's important when they pass laws to keep every citizen in mind.
I'll get off my gun ownership soap box now, sorry. Back to the pregnancy bubble!
just a note. some of us aren't able to live in a bubble.
I get this. But I like to have a place to escape and not have to worry about what I'm opening. My fb was filled with bashing all cops this morning and I couldn't handle it. I came here and saw that the shootings were being talked about and waned to throw my phone. Maybe we can have a seperate thread with a trigger warning so it can be avoided.
@mrsdramak I still want to hear your opinions on mint nurseries!! give it to meeeee!!!!
Love it. DH and I know the gender, but also the know the room that is now the nursery will stay the nursery if we have future children and we didn't want to have to repaint in a few years if we had a different gender child. So we painted it mint green.
The exact color we picked is Sherwin Williams Lacewing and it's so adorable.
We're going to do purple accents since it's a girl, but if we ever have a boy we'll just switch all the bedding and stuff to navy. I think it's a great neutral color and better then yellow, cause yellow washed out my skin tone.
+1 for no politics or religion talks on this board. This is precisely why I'm so sick of Facebook. I know these issues are important but I don't want to be Inundated everywhere I turn by these topics. Makes it hard to stay positive. And then I just worry about what kind of world I'm bringing my baby into.
@mrsdramak I thought you were going to have a strong opinion the other way... lol I have no idea why I thought this but I did. I love that color!! Does it look like the picture IRL or is it darker? I always pick colors wayyyy too dark when painting so I am a little worried I will choose a dark mint when in my head its a light mint.
This is what my bubble looks like. I haven't done any laundry in two weeks and I am ashamed of myself.
I also have to go to a bridal consultation for my uncle's fiancé to find a wedding dress. I don't know what to call her... My uncle is 13 years older than me but his fiancé is my age. We rode the bus together in high school... I'm certainly not calling her auntie. What makes it even weirder is that my uncle's oldest kid is 13 years younger than his fiancé.
Small town probs. The pickins' are slim.
+1 on the mint nursery. My baby girl is going to have a light brown/mint pack and play and swing downstairs because it matches the living room furniture. And mint is my favorite color so I'll always say yes to it.
Soooo what are you guys dressing your LOs up as for Halloween?
DS wants to be a Minion.
Oooo fun topic! My toddler has no opinion on the matter but I really want to dress her up. I'm trying to figure out the cutest thing I can think of while I'm still allowed to choose the costume.
