We always used a kitchen sized trash can with a pail liner. I like having two, one for the wash one in the can. I used wetbags on the go, a small or medium size usually. I will say too that they are useful long past the cloth diaper days. I use my large wet bag in the summer for bathing suits after the pool.

So I need some advice. I went through my stash from Black Friday and I'm not sure if I have enough. Here is what I have:
4 newborn AIOs 2 newborn covers
4 size one covers 4 size two covers 4 one size covers
1 one size AIO
1 newborn fitted 24 newborn prefolds
24 small prefolds 24 medium prefolds
3 Snappis 2 medium wetbags
I also got 164 size one disposables from my shower that I could supplement if needed. I'm planning on doing mainly prefolds and covers. My H is a little reluctant on CD so I figured getting the AIOs for the short time she could be in NB size could kind of ease him into it. I know I won't need all those NB prefolds but figured I could use them as but cloths or something after? Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks everyone who weighed in on the wet bags! It sounds like I'm ok on my mediums for out and about, and I should just get some pail liners that actually fit my small can.
@SawyerRichardson I have not CD'ed yet because this is my first, but from my various readings it sounds like you may want a few more prefolds, at least in small. If I'm counting correctly you may have to wash every other day. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not sure.

I think she's probably okay for EOD washing, though I'm a FTM too. I also got 24 NB and 24 small, though I'm expecting at least 8 lbs 'o baby so I could probably use smalls folded down in a pinch. Some sources do say 36 changes. I also have 4 NB workhorses and 2 AIOs.
@SawyerRichardson How often are you planning to wash? I read it the same as @WinchesterGirl - what you have sounds on par with an every other day wash. I agree with her also that you may ultimately want more small prefolds as you move into that size, but to get going, you have very similar to what I have. I do not have as many newborn AIOs, but that's only because I'm betting this kid will be big enough to fit into my size one/OS covers and AIOs nearly from the beginning. If he/she doesn't, then I'll order something then or use disposables until we hit that point.
Do you have any inserts/doublers (hemp, microfiber) in case your kid is a heavy wetter at night? That seems to be the only thing lacking, but you could get those as issues arise and you need to address. I have maybe 15-20 inserts in various materials and sizes partially because they came with a used CD stash I snagged, but they seem like they could come in handy.
Does anybody use disposable wipes with CD? For some reason the idea of cloth wipes makes the whole thing sound too hard for me, so I was planning to just go that route.
Oh yeah @Gretchypoo I meant to comment too. I read this phenomenal blog post about various cloth wipes. I went with 12 applecheek wipes for cleaning up hands/face at mealtimes, and then 48 grovia wipes for butts.
@Patience7150 I'm planning on probably washing every other day. So it sounds like I have a basic set up so I feel a little better. I wasn't planning on getting so many newborn AIOs, apparently they were in my cart from before Black Friday and I didn't notice until I checked out. Oops! Here's hoping I have a tiny baby who can use them!
I do not have any doublers, good catch. Any recommendations?

I used disposable wipes for the first year. But then it seemed silly if the diaper was going in with the diapers and then I had to bring dirty wipes to the trash. So I just started using cloth ones and throwing them all together. You don't even need fancy solution, you can just spray with water!! But disposable wipes are fine too if you have a second trash nearby!
@Xstatic3333 I'm planning to CD but use disposable wipes, though as a FTM I can't vouch for how it will work out. Not sure why reusable wipes are a hurdle for me, but I just feel like I'll be more successful if I remove that added responsibility.
I get that it seems like extra at first. I would just do disposables and you can always change your mind! I just stacked them out of the dryer and that was that for me!
Thanks guys! My plan was just to have a big pail for the diapers and a little one with a lid for the wipes right next to the changing table. Glad I'm not the only one who finds it a strange hurdle @lemieuxk! I fully acknowledge that it makes no sense at all.
For me, cloth wipes were so much better!!! You needed like 5 disposables to do the job one cloth one could. Cloth ones are nice and thick and get the mess off better. And its so easy just to toss in the same wetbag with your diapers. Before starting solids, it's all water soluble (no need to rinse wipes or diapers). I have Thirsties and Osocozy wipes. Both worked great! I didn't like flannel wipes (too thin and flannel pills little bits of debris on my other diapers when the flannel is new). I love using CA Baby Diaper Area Wash to spray poopy bottoms and then wipe with a cloth wipe.
@xstatic3333 I got a huge amount of disposable wipes from my MIL for free, probably somewhere around 20-30 large packages, so I'll be using a mixture of cloth and disposable wipes. I'll probably use cloth wipes at the house and disposables in the diaper bag, just because they were free. I'll probably do the same with diapers for traveling though, since I got a few packs of disposable diapers in various sizes.

@SawyerRichardson I don't really have any good recommendations for doublers/inserts. I am struggling to see much differentiation among brands, but I myself focused on ensuring I had a few of all fabric types on hand.
That's not a bad idea @ChaoticWolf! I got a ton of gifted wipes as well, but maybe I'll get some cloth to try at home and just see how it goes. I actually haven't been gifted many sposies-just 2 packs of NB (which we may not even be in long) and 1 of Size 2.
My mom and I actually made most of our wipes. It's been a long time, but one side is kind of nubby and the other side is flannel. I am not Like @FreshBakedBrownies, I found they did the job so much better.
I also used disposable wipes, both on the go for diaper changes and for other things like wiping faces and hands.

Sooo, we've had a daycare change and the new daycare accepts cloth diapers! My stash is 75% prefolds right now and the rest a mix of pocket and AIO. The new daycare accepts both...but I feel bad creating work by sticking with prefolds and feel like I should get more AIO. Anyone have experience with daycare and CD and have insight into what would be best?

For DD, I always sent pockets for daycare. The regular two teachers in the room probably could have learned prefolds very quickly, but there were always other hands in the room helping out so I stuck to prefolds to keep things easy for everyone.
So we haven't done a thing to prepare for cd yet. I haven't read up on it in so long I can't even remember what the terms mean. My husband is going to win money from fantasy football next weekend and I'm trying to convince him to use the winnings to start our stash. Wish me luck!
@patience7150 If I was you I'd wait until my LO gets here to buy anything else if you already have a normal sized stash. I plan on buying some more CDs after my LO gets here, since I'll be able to see what brands and styles fit best (plus it means saving money right now by not buying stuff that potentially won't get used.)

Just curious- what is their cloth diaper policy? The one daycare I found that did CDs put the diapers in the wetbag as they came off the baby-- so poo and all in the wetbag.

That's what most places do. When DD got older and the poo was "plopable" they would at least dump it for me. But most of the time I had to take care of it all when I got home. And in MA, it has to go into a sealed plastic container, not a wetbag!
@ChaoticWolf That's kind of what I was thinking too - at least wait until I find out what brands/sizes work best, but just needed to know if I should budget for more.
@Starfish113 Thanks for letting me know what you did! I'll maybe just talk with them and see if they have other kids in prefolds or prefer pockets/aio.
@Gretchypoo Yep, everything straight off the kiddo and into the wetbag. I suspect that'll be a disaster to clean every night, but we have a nice spray station set up and between that and managing a supply of disposables, I'll take the agony.

It might differ from kid to kid, but I never found it that bad to clean at the end of the day. I'm pretty anti-sprayer though and just took toilet paper to it and did a full quick cycle as my prewash!

I'd budget for at least a couple more, just in case. It's much easier to do that than to come up with extra money on the spot if your LO doesn't fit into half your stash or something.

I know daycare people (and I speak as a former daycare person) tend to wrap diapers up into neat little balls when they remove them, so hopefully the mess won't be TOO bad! Just unroll, dunk or spray, and throw in the bucket. With disposables, I used to try to wrap them up tiny enough to fit into the glove I was wearing for disposal. Ahhhh, good times.
@Starfish113 do you know if MA has any blanket policies about allowing CD in daycares or is it center by center? RI has very few that allow them, but H works in MA so we could look there too when the time comes. Nobody used them at the centers I used to work at but they've gained in popularity since then.

Yes, they are allowed in daycares in MA as long as the used ones are stored in an airtight locking container. So I sent clean ones in a wet bag and the dirties went into a Rubbermaid. We were the only ones in the center back then with them, but I think you're right about them gaining popularity!
and yes they rolled them up tight for me so it didn't get messy. If it was a messy one, they'd put it in a plastic shopping bag before putting it with the others
I have to share my purchase today. I am in Canada and you cannot order directly from Green Mountain Diapers here. I ended up finding some newborn and small workhorses on a b/s/t today! I technically don't need anymore nb diapers but I so badly want to try them. Any of the STM have any experience with them? I did CD my DD but only after she fit into one size diapers around 6ish weeks.

So, I finally legitimately ordered my stash(or the start of it) tonight. After coming home from a whirlwind day of shopping and discussing CD options with a lovely woman at a private stop I went back to one of my bookmarked websites and nearly wept with joy. Practically everything on their site as %45-%50 off, and I got a stash of 36pocket diapers, 72 bamboo inserts, and 2 wet bags for $400.00CAN. I'm technically not planning on starting my wee one on CDs until at least 3 months, but I couldn't pass up on that sale. It was especially nice because they said you could use the pocket diapers as a shell for pre-folds as well so I've got the option of more versatility if I need it. I am super excited now because more and more seems to be falling into place and I am getting less and less freaked out as time goes on.

@Starfish113 it's a website called giggle life https://www.gigglelife.com i have no idea how long their sale is on for though, I didn't see any kind of ending date. They seem to have good product though my friend recommended them to me, and used them on her DD. I felt quite confident in my order.
We use tide original powder on all of clothes and diapers. I do an extra rinse on all diapers/kids clothes and have no issues. My kids have very sensitive eczema skin and have no issues. People also use tide free and clear powder if you are worried about scents.
