So excited to finally get my stash started! Done with newborn and about 80% done with the rest of it. I can tell that this is going to be a problem for me though. I thought I had a good stash last night, then got up this morning and decided that I needed some more variety and couldn't pass up the adorable designs and bought $50 worth more. My husband thinks I'm crazy.
@SawyerRichardson it's so hard to not get caught up in the cuteness! I'm sure my son's newborn diapers are fine. But i almost bought the Blueberry mini coveralls at Moms Milk Boutique because they had the super cute Frosty (snowman) and Honey Bear prints, just because they are SO cute and on clearance!
Are liners necessary -- thinking of the flushable kinds. I remember reading that they clogged someone's septic earlier in the thread. But just curious if anyone else has feedback recommendations about the usefulness or lack thereof.
I finished buying our stash today !! We now have 14 pockets (one size), 12 prefolds, 6 covers (one size). Just need to worry about our newborn stash. We have 9 newborn prefolds with 2 covers right now. Id like at least 12 prefolds with 4 covers (about 1 day's worth) but I think I can pick that up used easily.
@floatingelephy I don't think you need liners at all, but definitely not until baby is eating solid baby food. When nursing or on formula, baby poo is liquidy and water soluble. It will all rinse away in your prewash.
@Xstatic3333 I got the orange and camo diaper Wednesday and I didn't realize they have their own inserts that snap in. Are you using the best bottom covers and inserts? I have a bunch of gmd prefolds that I was thinking of pairing with the cover, but am intrigued by the snap in as a quick grab and go.
@floatingelephy, liners killed our ejector pump for our septic system. I use a diaper sprayer and a spray pal. Works great once they start eating solids.
@Patience7150 I actually don't have any of that brand, I just thought it was cute and a good deal! In general I'm also going with GMD prefolds almost exclusively for the NB phase, and hopefully a bit beyond. We're nervous about our washing machine so trying to stick to natural fibers. A snap in insert does sound cool though, and I bet you could get a few to try super cheap this weekend!
You'll find yourself buying cute prints "just because" until they're potty trained
def don't do the liners unless they are going in the trash. So bad for your septic. I never even used a slather. I took toilet paper and wiped it into the toilet and the rest rinsed off in the wash!
@scottipino & @Starfish113 Thanks for the heads up on the septic and liners! I hadn't even thought about that, and we are on septic. I was thinking of getting a small pack just for meconium, but I might just skip that and sun any that get stained.
@winchestergirl another thing you could do is just buy one small pack of newborn disposables and use those until the meconium is over, which is what I'm doing since we got two packs of newborn diapers for free from our shower. Or you could get super cheap flats like flour sack towels and then just throw those out afterwards. I've heard the meconium phase only lasts two-three days.

To @ChaoticWolf's point, I'm planning to have enough disposable diapers for at least the first two weeks before trying to jump into cloth. There are so many new things headed for me, I didn't need to add another!
I have heard about some disposable liners being compostable though, if that's an option for you.
We never bought disposables. The hospital gave us a pack of pampers that we used the first couple days in the hospital & then cloth after that with no meconium issues.
Cotton babies has some Flip covers on sale today for $7.47! Flip covers didnt work at all for my newborn, but became our favorite cover ~6-9 months and older, once eating some solids and had solid poo and his thighs were big enough to fit their looser leg openings.
@Xstatic3333 we did prefolds from birth until potty training with my son. They worked really well, so easy to clean and throw in the drier and inexpensive. As he got older and peed more as a toddler, i did add a hemp doubler for more absorption.
Glad to hear the prefolds worked well for you @FreshBakedBrownies! I figure if we use them when the baby is in our care (3-4 days/week plus evenings and mornings) it will lessen the number of AIOs that we'll need to buy for other caregivers. What did you use at night? I picked up some high absorbency fitteds yesterday (Tots Bots and Sustsinablebabyish) that I'm hoping will do the trick.
@WinchesterGirl, your other option is to cut up some fabric as a liner. Cheap and easy plus can be used later when you might need to use a cream that isn't cloth safe. Some people cut up receiving blankets they are no longer using.
In my attempts to become more active in here, I'm surprised I haven't seen this thread yet!
Hai! I clothed my first born from around 15m to potty trained (2 1/2ish).
Totally doing it again with this little. I plan to use disposable for the first week or so until get more in the hang of a newborn and my preschooler. I stocked up on thirsties size 1 duo wraps and prefolds and I already have a large amount of flour sack towels. I did covers and prefolds (padfolded) for the longest time with my first and then moved to pockets (mostly sunbaby) when i wanted a change.
Oh man you guys I was so bad this weekend. It was all practical purchases (i.e. nothing just for the print) and good sales but I have a major spending hangover.
I was shocked to come home from work and see that 2 out of my 3 Black Friday orders came in today! That was so fast! The only one I'm waiting on now is from Kelly's Closet which should be her Wednesday.
I'm 2/3 too @SawyerRichardson! These small cloth diaper retailers have such awesome customer service. My GMD order arrived quite literally the next day.
@Xstatic3333 we used prefolds at night too, with the hemp doubler as he got older. Prefolds with doublers were definitely more absorbent and leak proof than any AIO i tried. I hated Tots Bots, but it was mostly due to poor fit on my long and lean baby's chicken legs plus bad absorbency with the minky version they sold at the time. But i think I've heard the newer/current Tots Bots got rid of the minky and are ok now. I had Sustainablebabyish snapless fitteds, but sold them. Prefolds were more absorbent and economical. I never tried Sbish overnight bamboo fitteds though; I'm too cheap to pay that much for one diaper!
Stupid question alert: @FreshBakedBrownies did you then put the prefold around your baby normally (with a snappi or whatever), and then just lay the doubler inside the cover?

Not a bad question at all! Yes, while only breastfeeding, his poo was very runny. I put the prefold on baby first using a jelly roll fold and snappi, and put the doubler between the prefold and cover. Once he started eating baby food and solids, his poo became formed. At that point we just trifolded the prefold and laid it and the doubler in the cover (covers with flaps like Flip or Blueberry capri were nice to keep the trifolded prefold in place).

I'm surprised you had better luck with prefolds at night! Before my oldest was potty trained, she was an extremely heavy nighttime wetter. The only thing that kept her sheets and pjs dry was a sustainablebabyish snapless fitted with both inserts PLUS an additional bamboo insert and a wool cover on top. Her fluffy butt was massive and the entire diaper was soaked in the am but it never leaked through the wool. I tried numerous insert combinations and prefolds and combos with prefolds and they never worked.
I finally went through my stash! Remember I started with twins :-)
I have 30 OS BG pockets with velcro, 4 with snaps. I wish I had more snaps!
I have 12 AIOs for newborn size I had kept 13 newborn prefolds and 11 preemie size. We used these a lot for pocket stuffing.
I need to find covers and snappis, but other than that, I think we are good to start! Now I just need to get them prepped and try to resist buying other cute prints if I see them!

Pretty happy that our CD stash is finally underway! Found a couple of good Black Friday deals on Cotton Babies and Blinq. Ended up with six size 1 Thirsties covers, five size two Thirsties covers, and 6 OS Flips covers (averaged about $7 each). Also already have 6 newborn prefolds, 12 one-size (larger) prefolds, plus 12 inserts for added absorbency. A friend who has a 9-month old said I can use her stash of newborn CDs, since we won't need them for very long. So that's awesome. Plus we will probably do disposables for the first few weeks, so not too concerned about newborn CDs.
I want to get six or so BumGenius or FuzziBunz AIOs or pockets and some more prefolds, but otherwise I am feeling like we're almost there!
Can we talk wetbags/pails/liners? What are you ladies planning on that front? I just realized that in addition to cloth wipes I probably need some more bags (I currently have 2 medium bags, and one of the giant rumparooz liners which I was storing my stash in).
Also, if you're using a diaper pail what size? I picked up a little 7 gallon can at target earlier, but I'm wondering if that's too small.
@WinchesterGirl I only used wetbags, no pails. I had 3 wetbags, one in use at home, one dirty/being washed, one for diaper bag. Newborn diapers are small, so a medium bag will hold a lot. Eventually I liked the large sized Planetwise bags.
I only use wetbags too. I know some people are all about airing them out, but I'm not one of them and need them zipped right! I think 3 is a good number as well
@Gretchypoo we got a few packs of these. Last time, I just bought cute flannel and cut it into squares. I sewed around the edges, but they still frayed in the wash because I don't have a serger.
I got two PlanetWise pail liners and plan to get a trash or laundry bin from Target. I've heard they smell less of air can circulate, so no lid. I also got two wet bags for on the go.

What do you all use for cloth wipes? I was going to get some baby washcloths and cut them in half.
