Has anyone discussed cloth diapers vs. regular diapers with their SO?

Re: Has anyone discussed cloth diapers vs. regular diapers with their SO?

  • @FreshBakedBrownies I think I'm ok on covers - I have 4 NB, and 4 OS. Everything I read said estimate one cover for 3+ fitteds. What are you guys aiming for as far as cover to fitted or prefold ratio?

I would get a few more covers. I know you can wipe them, but in the NB stage they poop a lot and so I'd get a few more to be safe!

  • I am about 1/ 2 way finished with my stash. I have 12 OS Pockets and 9 NB prefolds with 2 covers. Going to get a few more NB prefolds and covers and 12- 20 bigger prefolds with 5 to 6 covers.
  • @WinchesterGirl yeah I'd get a couple more newborn sized covers. When my son was a newborn he'd go through 12-15 diapers a day. And that runny newborn poo can leak into the cover pretty easily.

I loved the rumparooz newborn and thirsties duo wrap size 1 covers initially. Then blueberry mini coveralls were a little bigger and fit longer. Initially I hated BG Flips and couldn't use them at all. He was 8lbs 10oz at birth, but skinny thighs. I didn't start using and liking BG Flips until he was 6 months old and starting solids.

  • @FreshBakedBrownies Yeah, for the NB covers I have 2 sweetpea (inexpensive, and very trim!), 1 rumparooz, and 1 I sewed myself. I will look at the thirsties, I dont think I have any of their covers!

You're gonna love Thirsties. They're all about the woodsy/outdoorsy motifs.
  • @Xstatic3333 you know, I have several of the thirsties NB AIOs, I'm not sure why I didn't try their covers!

  • @WinchesterGirl do you have a pattern recommendation for the cover you made? I've got some PUL fabric I got really cheap that I never used. I should try it!

That's really good to know. I think my friend said that hers wound up costing somewhere in the area of $500 at first, so I was kind of prepared for a number like that. I didn't know you could get cloth diapers used to be honest, I'm assuming it's fairly sanitary if you do. I've only looked at a couple of websites so far, so I'm still kind of green, but I'll keep an eye out on those options for sure. Thanks for the info :)

So far I spent less than $400 all because 95% is used and half of it is used GMD prefolds.  Also got a great deal from a friend's old stash.  There are lots of Facebook groups and Diaper Swappers resale page.  My little Joeys and Govia AIO's looked like they were never used.  Mainly because you only used them for about a month.  I'm so excited to use cloth because they are so stickin cute and I'm a cheap ass.  So the prospect of saving any money has me on board.  My husband is on board, kind of, but since he a cheap ass also.  He likes the idea of trying to save $1,000.  The plan is for us to do at least part time cloth.  If he ends up wanting to do disposables then he can and I'll do cloth during the day.  My mom has Rheumatoid arthritis so we will be doing disposables when she is around.  Snaps will be to hard for her.

  • @FreshBakedBrownies I will look tonight when I get home to see if I can find the pattern! I used polar fleece to make mine, so you may want to find one that's not a pull on.
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • I have the Thirsties nb covers too! They were my favorite last time around :)

  • I was planning on going exclusively bumgenius with some grovias for overnight. Is this not a good plan? It seems like you all have such a big variety.
  • @homemake, I think people tend to start with a variety to get an idea of what they like.  Some people do well with just a few brands but others like to try things out before committing to a certain brand

I took a picture of what I have stashed away so far and starting planning on what I want to try to get during Black Friday sales

Right side are newborns-  20 AIOs(simplex, lil joeys, a tots bots, a grovia, and a handful of Bitty Bees), 6 newborn covers(RAR and imagine)

The rest is my OS stash that has either been saved from previous or bought new for this one.

Not pictured are the 10 GMD fitteds and 6 newborn prefolds stashed somewhere else.

Plans to buy: a few newborn covers that fit smaller, preemie prefolds, more newborn prefolds. I tend to have small and early babies so trying to be prepared for small.

  • @homemake I think it's fine if you don't have variety. My first time CDing I literally only used Thirsties and BumGenius. I slowly added other kinds for print reasons only, lol. Unless you have 5,000 diapers, the variety of kinds doesn't matter because you will most likely use them all before laundry day!

  • @homemake I have a variety bc I bought sale/ used. I'm sure I'll have some I hate but so far, no terrible reviews on any I've used.

Another bonus to variety, they all fit a little different so if your kiddo has chubby vs skinny legs, something may fit better!
  • True, but BG is a really good brand, which is why they're so $$, and they fit a lot of babies well so I don't think she will go wrong with them!

True!! I plan to get some but I'm waiting for a sale ;-)

  • This is the start of my newborn stash.  14 AIO's (BG and Thirsties and 2 unknown all purchased used), 6 prefold and 10 fat for flats, 2 covers and one fitted that will prob fit after a month or so.

I want to get some more prefolds and will definitely need more covers.

We started cloth with our son when he was 4 months and he was well into one size by then so I have at fairly large one size stash.
  • Thanks @WinchesterGirl !! So cute! Were your newborn fitteds from a free pattern too?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Yes! I used the darling diapers newborn fitted pattern for size, but it doesn't have much in the way of instructions. So I just did some reading on the elastic encasement methods. Also, I opted to skip snaps because I did the first one with a nb snap down, and the flannel just really didn't do amazing with that. So, instead I adjusted the pattern to have a dip at the front and left them without snaps - I'm just going to use a snappi.

  • More questions! So it seems like a good amount of people are buying used. How do you determine the diaper is in good enough condition? I said previously I want to go bumgenius and I randomly just came across a woman in my area selling only BGs and the ones we want. She said the elastics are good and that some of the diapers are worn. If theyre worn are they not going to hold up as well or what's the issue with that?
  • @homemake I looked at mine in person. if they were slightly stained, NBD. I looked at the elastic and velcro/ snaps. If you have good quality pics where you can zoom in that is a bonus :)
  • @homemake FWIW I read somewhere that the bum genius lose absorbency over time. Look into it on your own of course, but just passing it along.

    All microfiber does.
    @homemake
I'd suggest that as long as the elastics look good to go for it, but buy new inserts. You can even get cheap flour sack towels from target or Walmart for $1 and they have great absorbancy! Or packs of prefolds. You can really stuff anything in a pocket diaper! Which I'm assuming the BGs you are referring to are, since that's mostly what they sold for a long time. Buying used microfiber is a pain to strip and bleach anyway.

  • @WinchesterGirl I love seeing your finished pieces! I'll be using the Katrina soaker pattern to make woolies so it's always fun to see that the pattern does in fact work well.

Did you use the standard rise and leg hole measurements?
  • @yogadevil Yeah, that pattern was pretty straightforward so I didn't adjust anything!
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • Kelly's Closet is having a little clearance sale! They had 15% off BumGenius Elemental AIOs so I got one of those and a pack of Snappis so I could get free shipping. Still waiting for Black Friday to order the rest but excited to start my stash. Thinking I'll probably do mainly prefolds and pockets with a couple AIOs for my husband since he is leary of the CD idea.
  • For those of you using prefolds, have you found any sort of quick reference chart/graphic outlining when to use what folds, and what doublers to use depending on the issues you're having? I kind of wanted something cute to slide into my CD drawer so I didn't need to Google every time...
  • That's an awesome idea @Patience7150. I could post it over the diaper table to help H.
  • I've never folded a prefold in any sort of fancy way. I've seen so many cool ways but simple has always worked best for me!! I know if you look in google images different diaper companies have folding graphics though!

  • For my son's newborn stage, I used the jelly roll fold & snappi. It did the best to contain the runny newborn poo.

  • I know we have lots of hunting families around so thought I'd make sure you all saw this: https://www.nickisdiapers.com/best-bottom-limited-edition-exclusive.html
  • Totally ordered @Xstatic3333! My husband loves the orange and camo combo for ALL things...Thank you for sharing!
  • Awesome @Patience7150! Glad someone could take advantage.
  • You guys. I. Can't. Even. Today. I'm craigslist-ing for some used cloth diapers and see a post for all in 2's. I've been planning to do prefolds primarily + pockets/AIO as backup. I get googling AI2s and do not understand how these are different from the prefold covers I already have. Literally, I'm looking at Thirsties duo wrap, watching videos and absolutely not understanding what makes these different from the covers I have. I have a google doc with everything I've bought so far, so I pull it up to google Thirsties duo wrap vs. <whatever I already bought>. What have I already bought?? THIRSTIES DUO WRAP.
  • It looks like buybuy Baby has some CD sales on their early black Friday sale today.
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • I've been watching YouTube videos on CD all day long today. Trying to decide exactly what I want  and get a game plan together for Black Friday.
  • Are we posting here for Black Friday CD deals or on the deals thread?

Let's do it here! I just got an email from Abby's Lane but it was pretty nondescript.
