@chicandbubbly @arbasham I get a lot of headaches as well, and occasional migraines.  It's why I stopped drinking alcohol, since that always made my headaches so much worse.  Getting regular chiropractic adjustments has helped tremendously and I don't get them nearly as often anymore.  I did wake up with a headache this morning though after my first follistim injection last night.  I'm feeling a lot better now but unfortunately I think my morning coffee had something to do with that!

How did your IUI go @chicandbubbly?

@chicandbubbly I understand your fear of chiropractors.  You definitely want to make sure you go to a good one.  I would recommend looking for a chiropractor who uses Gonstead technique, and read patient reviews.  My chiropractor is amazing and I always feel so much better after.  And it's just $35 for each adjustment so very affordable.  I go every 2-3 weeks.

I'm so sorry to hear that @chicandbubbly  there is always hope. When we first received our MFI diagnosis I did frantic googling and found many message board threads where women reported success with IUI with very poor sperm samples. It only takes one. We didn't have the best luck again this cycle. I went in for my mid-cycle u/s on Wed and I only had mature follicles on the right side (which is my tube that is blocked).  My RE said we should still 'try on our own, just in case'. I was so bummed because this is our 3rd cycle in a row that we couldn't move forward with IUI. I'm looking into acupuncture for this upcoming cycle. Anyone see an acupuncturist regularly?

@chicandbubbly sorry your iui sample wasn't as good as you'd hoped.  Try to stay positive that it will do the trick.  Fx for you!

i went in today for another US check and only one follie is growing but it's still only 15mm so instructed to take 150iu tonight of follistim (I had used up all mine so re was able to give me some for now) and go back on Tuesday for another US.  Got some slow growing follies this round that's for sure.

@emgem819 - Were you taking follistim since CD3 or did they just switch you to follistim?  I'm on follistim too (125iu) CD3-6 and maybe longer depending on my u/s on Tuesday.  I hope your follies grow!

@Drove2u - Did they switch you off clomid for a particular reason?  It seems like it's more effective for you if you get more follies!

@erica0901 - GL this cycle!  Here's hoping this last letrozole cycle is a success for you.

@emgem819 I start letrozole tonight (cd3) and then  start follistim on cd7 with first follicle check on 2/15 (cd11). I was previously doing 5 mg letrozole and 50 out follistim but this cycle they upped it to 7.5 mg letrozole and 75 iu follistim soooo we will see what happens :)

@pcossat25 GL to you and I hope you get more growth than I did!  Glad to hear they upped your dose...I had to push my re to increase and she did somewhat reluctantly.  I guess with pcos they need to be extra careful because of the multiples risks.

@emgem819 I had to do the same with my RE. The first IUI cycle i only had one mature folli and I begged them to up the dose but they said no and that I had had a "good response". The second cycle I responded to the same dose MUCH more slowly, requiring injections twice as long as the first. I had multiple small follicles but still only one mature. Thankfully this time they increased.

I I am holding out a good thought that you see some growth at your next monitoring appointment!!!

For those of you on follistim... @emgem819 and @PCOSat25 do either of you experience any side effects?  I don't remember any when I first took it in November, but this time around I'm experiencing bloating, gas so bad that I can hear it moving around in my stomach and making me uncomfortable, and last night I was experiencing hot flashes.  I also got some pretty bad bruising on my stomach from one of my injections too, which I've never had before.  I do feel a bit better this morning though.  I'll talk about these symptoms tomorrow at my appointment but was just curious if anyone else experienced any of these symptoms.  I've had 3 injections of 125 iu so far.

NurseTMD85 Thank you! It didn't go as well as i'd hoped but it's ok! I am trying not to dwell on things we can't change. :) Getting through the TWW and then if this isn't our month I am not sure what is next.

Right now my DH wants to take next month off and then we may be moving on to IVF but I am not certain... we are 100% out of pocket because our insurance doesn't cover infertility, so spending 15-25K is not comforting.  :( I will do anything for our baby tho!!

Good luck to everyone getting an IUI this week! Quick question, how many mature follicles are best for an IUI?
  • Options
@chicandbubbly - Here's hoping you are successful this month!  If you need to move onto IVF though, I know it's so much more expensive but also so much more effective, which is what I try to focus on when I think about the possibility for us.  We will be out of pocket for IVF too.

@Stars2016 - That's a bit of a tough question, and I think even REs differ in their opinions on the matter.  I think most REs would say 1 or 2 mature follicles is ideal in order to minimize the risk of multiples.  If you have male factor infertility, they will typically allow you to do an IUI with more than 2 mature follicles (3 or 4) since the likelihood of fertilization is lower.

CD2 here, baseline scheduled for tomorrow 2/9. RE will be discussing a change in medications this cycle due to my average/slightly lower response I had 2 dominant follicles (3rd possibly was mature at Jan IUI ).  I have DOR- had slow response to clomid for IUI #1 but I did respond to meds thankfully. IUI #2 will be late February. Good luck to everyone this month!

wifeinraleigh28-- I can't tag again. They took me off clomid because I was producing too many follicles so risk of multiples. But since nothing has been working I want to take that risk for my last IUI.

Thanks for the response @wifeinraleigh28! I had 2 mature follicles and have unexplained infertility so glad to hear that's okay. My RE didn't say anything else about it and I didn't think to ask until I saw people posting the amount of mature follicles that they had.

@wifeinraleigh28 that's funny you asked about side effects because my dh just noticed a big bruise on my stomach from the follistim which I've never gotten before on other shots.  I've been taking more than ever this cycle...total almost 900iu so maybe that's why but it's a huge bruise!  No hot flashes or gas though for me!

@wifeinraleigh28 I just did some googling (lol) and it looks like follistim cold straight out of the fridge is more prone to cause bruising so they recommend letting it adjust to room temp for 20-30 minutes before you do the shot.  Also some ppl said icing the site of the infection before hand will help!  Hope your other symptoms decrease...the things we do for a baby right?! :)

@emgem819 thanks for that info I take follistim and I have noticed more bruising recently so maybe I will let it sit out for a bit. Good luck on ur next iui

Thank you for that info @emgem819!  We have been doing the shot right out of the fridge so I think we'll go ahead and try letting it sit for a bit.  Or icing...

@ultratomato - Glad you had a good baseline appointment!  I had a case of the Mondays yesterday too.  Already looking forward to the weekend.

I go in for my follicle check in an hour.  Hoping for a good response to the follistim!

Well I just got home from my appointment.  And I'm kind of in shock and confused.  I have a total of 10 growing follicles between 10-14 mm.  6 in my left ovary and 4 in my right.  The doctors at my clinic actually had to consult about me before determining what to do.  They decided to keep me on follistim 125 iu for two more nights, adding in ganirelix starting tonight so I don't ovulate early.  And I go back on Thursday for another ultrasound.  I'm worried they will decide to cancel my IUI if all these follicles continue to grow.  My ovaries need to slow down!!

Thanks @ultratomato glad it was helpful for you too!  GL to you as well in this cycle!  Glad to hear your baseline appt went well...that's the first step!

I had my US today and I still have one very small growing follie (was 15mm on Sunday) that is 16mm and two at 11mm.  My RE wants me to stim again tonight with another 150iu of follistim then trigger tomorrow night and do iui on Friday.  She actually told me that if this cycle doesn't work she would recommend either one more iui or going straight to ivf so looks like I'm in the same boat as you @chicandbubbly.  These shots are costing me so much money oop that I would have better chances going straight to ivf but ivf seems so costly it's ridiculous and we'd have to take out a loan or something because we don't have that kind of money just lying around.  So that's where I'm at right now.  Here's hoping this cycle works so I don't have to look into that but we will see.

@wifeinraleigh28 that's crazy all your follies are that big.  Do you have pcos? I know for me I always have a lot of little follies because of ivf but only one ever matures.  I had two 11mms, one on each side on Sunday that just didn't grow at all and stayed that size today in my US.  So you'll probably have a few that grow big and a few that don't which sounds perfect.  I wouldn't worry too much!  Keep us posted!
