February IUI

Since February is a week away, I figured I would start a new discussion for those of us doing IUI in Feb. We did our first IUI last month and it was sadly unsuccessful. I started Letrozole today (CD3) and will be doing another IUI in a few weeks. I wish everyone success and hope this month will be our month :).

Re: February IUI

  • Hello @chicandbubbly. Thanks for starting this thread.  I will be doing an IUI (2nd round) in February if TI is not successful this month.  I should ovulate toward the end of February, so I have a couple weeks to go to get started.

  • @cmm012 I hope this month is successful for you!

@stars2016 Good luck with your first IUI. I agree it is so nice having a plan in place! Don't worry too much, the IUI itself was not bad at all. Just one warning if you are taking any meds (I did Letrozole and Trigger shot) that apparently you can have many symptoms. I was not prepared for the number of symptoms I had and was symptom spotting like a crazy person. You may not have any but figured I would warn you :) Hope everything goes well for you next week and hang in there during the TWW.

@chicandbubbly I'm so sorry your IUI wasn't successful last month.  I was rooting for you!

  • @wifeinraleigh28 Thinking of you as well!! Good luck with the SA. I know that MFI is very frustrating. I hope the clomid helped your DH, for us there is nothing we can do to improve his #'s- the urologist basically said it is genetic.

BUT....We got a miracle result with our count during the IUI. DH's first SA was a dismal 2M count, second 4.5M... the day of our IUI- 25 million (9.5 post wash) it was unbelievable!

Our RE and his Urologist basically had told us that the count wouldn't go any higher than 5M. :)

  • @chicandbubbly - The docs really can't predict this stuff I guess!!  I think each load (lol) can just vary so drastically and you never know what you're gonna get!  That is amazing though that you had good numbers for your IUI.  I'm so sorry it was unsuccessful though... never give up hope!

We got my DH's SA results and total count was 43 million!  I am beyond shocked.  Still showing low motility at 35% (normal is >40%).  Hoping the motility will increase as he continues to take clomid, and the urologist will probably want to do another SA in a month.  I'm extremely happy the count went up so much and is now considered in the normal range!

I'm not sure what to do now though... do we do an IUI in February, since we still have low motility?  Or continue to wait it out and see if there are improvements?  We only get 3 IUIs covered by our insurance total for the life of the policy, and we've already done 1.  I appreciate any advice or input!!

  • FX for everyone.

We plan to do our 3rd IUI in February. Two BFN the last time. First IUI they told me the count was 22M and the second IUI 6.5M. I'm not sure if the first one was pre-wash because they told me what the motility was, I don't remember now, but when I asked about it the second time the RE said that the 6.5M was post wash. The first IUI he told me he likes to see at least 10M, but the second he told me that he likes to see at least 5M. I was very confused.

DH was smoking quite a bit and he quit back in September. RE says that the smoking could have been really impacting his SA because smoking is terrible for fertility. He had a few puffs from a friend at a party in December, and then fell off the wagon and started smoking about 1/2 a pack a day since then. He also stopped taking his supplement that is supposed to help boost things as regularly, which he is back on and taking regularly.

Back in September he had his SA done and had above average volume, concentration was 10M/ml, which is 1/2 what it is supposed to be, but he had 62M overall which is above what normal range is. Motility was only 28%, but rapid which is supposed to be above 25% was at 23% (apparently 50% is what my RE is looking for on rapid and slow motility) and morphology was 4% (apparently 5-14% is "normal").

It's just so frustrating. He's struggling with the smoking thing. So on the one hand he blames himself that we can't get pregnant, but on the other hand has trouble giving it up. The smoking has also put some strain on our relationship, both because of the baby thing but also because I don't want him to die and leave me all alone.

Looks like IUI for me around 2/10/16

  • @MarlyHC I'm sorry to hear about your struggles and that your DH has had a difficult time quitting smoking :disappointed: In our case we were referred to a urologist because of my husband's abnormal SA and low testosterone (which is genetic).  The urologist told us that the supplement he was taking (androgel) to increase his T levels was likely causing his MFI.  So he prescribed my husband clomid to boost his T naturally.  He told us that just getting off the androgel should increase his sperm count, but with low T there are a slew of other side effects that are awful so we didn't want to just stop the androgel without using something else to help with that.  I have heard of clomid in some cases increasing sperm count, but it is much more effective at increasing T levels.  We are currently still waiting on the results of his blood work to see where his T level is at now that he's been taking clomid for a month.  He does feel really good, but he's had difficulty having full erections.  He was still able to give a sample for the SA today but he described it as being at like 80%.  That's also how it was the last time we BD'd.  I have a hunch his T levels are still not where they should be, which would explain this issue.  I'm hoping more time on clomid will help.  He goes back to the urologist next week.

@wifeinraleigh28. We get absolutely nothing covered so that is why we are doing IUI first. This month will be number two and then I think we will reevaluate to see what the next step is. I would say 3 would be the max # of IUI's I would consider for us. I am trying not to think about the potential for IVF- the finances, meds... All make me very nervous! Definitely taking it one step at a time but I will definitely do anything we need to :)

  • @MarlyHC looks like we are back in this iui thing once again!  My dh has ok numbers but low morphology (2%) in his SA back in September but he's been taking fertilaid for men which has helped increase it. • @chicandbubbly Yes I am definitely thankful we get 3 IUIs covered (and apparently an unlimited amount of SAs... which I'm happy about considering we have to keep doing them!) but we don't have any coverage at all for IVF. We will be in the same boat as you if we end up needing to go down that path...

@cmm012 Thank you!! I haven't talked to our RE about it yet but I might go ahead and email him. The reason I haven't asked him yet is because I just assume he will defer to the urologist's suggestion. That appointment isn't until next week (3-4 days after AF is due) so that will put us out of our window for a baseline u/s. I suppose I might have to wait February out anyway!

  • I've been emailing back and forth with my RE this morning, and he is really pushing us to go forward with IUI next cycle because with our current motility numbers we only have a 10-12% chance of natural conception.  Just discussed it with DH though and we both kind of agree that we want to see what the urologist says first about whether or not we can expect more sperm improvements... which is definitely not my RE's area of expertise.  Unfortunately we won't be able to talk to the urologist until DH's appointment on Thursday, which is probably going to push me past my timeline for baseline u/s.

My thoughts: can't I just be pregnant already so I don't have to deal with this anymore?!!!

  • Sorry about your cysts @jodes727. I hope you get good news on Weds!

For those who have done a previous IUI, did your RE put you on progesterone after? I see it mentioned on this site a lot but my RE has never mentioned it. Is it only given for a particular reason? I will be asking my RE about it but figured I will start here :). Thanks!

  • @chicandbubbly I've never had progesterone after but I've only done one iui.  My Drs office doesn't offer it or think it's necessary.  I think it helps to build the uterine lining so maybe it's only given if your lining is prone to being thin.

  • @chicandbubbly I am put on it every time.  I agree with @emgem819, I think it helps with the lining and implantation.  It also helps to reduce your bodies immune response so it can tolerate the foreign dna.

  • I will be having my 3rd iui hopefully next week. Been on letrozole  (fermera ) 7.5 mg last 3 cycles. 1st iui failed to ovulate. 2nd iui this past month ended as a chemical pregancy. Hoping 3rd try is the one. I go on the 3rd for a follicle scan praying for mature follicles.
  • Hello everyone, we have our first IUI scheduled this month. We're dealing with unexplained infertility (DH count is 12 million with good motility, so they call us borderline MFI/unexplained) ...I'm starting off with no medication and just the trigger shot. Taking one step at a time so as not to bombard my body - I'm so sensitive to meds I'm scared to think about what this year will be like if this takes a while.
Due date for baby boy: 3/27/17

  • I triggered Saturday night and had my first IUI this morning. Now for the TWW....
  • @chicandbubbly - Every RE is different, but my RE automatically puts everyone on progesterone suppositories following IUIs.  They say they do it to best support every pregnancy regardless of what your natural progesterone level is.  Some REs check your progesterone levels and only put you on suppositories if necessary though.

    IUI #1-3 (Nov 2015, Feb 2016, May 2016) = BFNs

    FET #2 (April 2019) = BFN

  • @tiffavis12Good luck with your follicle scan! I hope this month is the month for you!!
@stars2016 Hang in there! The TWW is torture. Plan a lot of fun things to keep your mind off of it! (Not that every thought will be about it) :)

HMM thank you everyone for your feedback about the progesterone meds. I think I will at least bring it up at my ultrasound Friday and see what they have to say.

@wifeinraleigh28I see your new SA showed a great count! Happy for you :)

  • AF showed up today so I called the RE with CD1 and to get my plan for Feb.  Since it has been a year since I have had my CD3 bloodwork and hysterosonogram I have to do it all again this month.  Bummer!!  So no iui for me this month.  She also mentioned however that she only wants to do one more iui (which would only make 2 total) and then move on to ivf with pgd.  Does this seem odd that she only wants to do 2 and then go to ivf??

    Unexplained infertility

  • So sorry about AF @mrandmrssmith007:(. When we originally found out about our MFI we were told IVF was our only option..... then we got a second SA that showed a bit of improvement (still severe MFI) but since the numbers had more than doubled our RE and urologist said we could try IUI but they wouldn't recommend more than two. Now after our results after the first IUI I think we could probably try a total of three before moving on. Did she give you a reason why she only recommends 2? Maybe because you are unexplained ivf can give more insight and of course it has better odds?

I personally consider more than just what the drs recommend LOL. Of course they absolutely are the experts and have lots of knowledge, but you also have to do what is right for you and your DH- in terms of health, finances, emotionally, religiously etc. IVF to me is a big deal so we decided despite the odds we should TRY iui first. I think after my 2nd IUI we may have a better idea of when we should move on to IVF.

Hi, ladies! FX for everyone this month.

IUI #1 was on 1/29 (CD15), so today is 4 DPIUI. According to FF I O'd on Saturday though. Medicated cycle, Femara CD 3-7, Ovidrel trigger on CD13. Lining was 10.8mm and follicles measured 18 (R), 16 (L) and 12 (L) on CD12. MFI is at play, but his post-wash count was 6.4mil with 89% motility. I'm trying to be optimistic. I was thrilled with those numbers for us. Progesterone started on CD17.

Have you changed your behavior in the TWW? I'm not going to my exercise class, instead am just walking. I'm also trying to avoid heavy lifting. I'm trying to keep socks/slippers on at all times at home to keep my feet warm. We're going out of town this weekend to meet up with my college roommates/BFFs and their husbands. One is pregnant and this is the firs time I'm seeing her since finding out so I think it might be hard for me. That will be 6-7DPO that we're there so I'm going to really try to limit my drinking.

  • Hi Morgan! I hope your first IUI is a success. I am also dealing with MFI so I understand how tough it is. I had my first IUI back on January 9th. I didn't really do that much differently during the TWW besides not drinking any alcohol and cutting back on caffeine (I have been drinking half caf/half decaf daily for about 6 months now). My feet are always cold so socks and slippers are an every day thing for me LOL. I also took it easier then normal because I had a lot of symptoms (turned out not pregnancy symptoms sadly) but I literally felt awful the whole tww. I didn't stop exercising, I went to my barre class a few times.

I hope you have a good time with your friends. It is so hard to be around pregnant ladies even when you are happy for them... it is definitely hard not to think, "why them and not me." Do they know about what you are going through? I have found having supportive people in my life that know has helped me a lot, but of course it is up to you whether you tell them or not.

Thanks, chic! I'm hoping it's our lucky one too. I'm sorry to hear yours wasn't, but hope February is your lucky month!!

A few people know we're struggling. This group does know, but honestly I don't get a ton of support from them. Not for lack of caring, but really just lack of knowledge on the whole process. I know it's pretty typical, but we got a lot of the "just relax...you're young." "I'm sure it's just stress...". No one else has kids, nor is even trying. Even the couple who is pregnant wasn't "trying"...
I don't know if we'll tell them we just did IUI or not. My mom and MIL, as well as my siblings know, but again not a ton of support because they don't really know what to ask. And on top of it all, I'd still love to be able to "surprise" everyone with the pregnancy announcement (hoping we get to one day) so that makes me not want to share when we're actually doing IUIs because there should obviously be an outcome to report.
I'd love to find some support in person, but feel like I'll feel most supported from someone going through something similar. There are so few resources out there for MFI, but I would settle for just general infertility. When I was sitting in the RE's waiting room on Friday I almost started talking to another woman waiting. Her DH came in and went upstairs, exactly as my DH had done, so I know they were there for something similar. But I didn't because I thought it was weird.

  • Sorry your friends/family aren't supportive @MorganL925! It is definitely a hard thing to deal with and many people don't get it. It can also be hard to know what/how much to tell people. Some people (like our parents) know everything, others we have just told we are "having infertility problems." I have found a lot of comfort sharing with the ladies in my Bible study too.

It can also be disappointing when you tell people and they don't react how you want/expect. This happened to me with one of my best friends. I told her the news way back in November and since then she has not contacted me pretty much at all- she has sent two texts- Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Seriously. If it was reversed and any of my friends were dealing with something I would be texting to check in, sending them gifts, etc. It definitely hurts that during the hardest time of my life someone who i thought (apparently not) was a good friend isn't there for me at all. :(

  • Alright ladies I am jumping over from the January board. I did my second IUI on 1/19. Today is 14dpiui and stil getting negatives on HPT. Not totally counting myself out yet but it is looking like we will probably do out 3rd and FINAL IUI in February 2016. My RE said he would not do a beta unless no AF by 16dpIUI so planning beta for Thursday and if negative I will stop progesterone and probable see AF shortly after.

    Wishing everyone luck this cycle!!!
  • I can relate to your entire conversation @chicandbubbly and @MorganL925.  Hugs to you.  I will really be keeping my fingers crossed for both of you this month!  Still not sure if I'll be joining you ladies in February IUI, but we will be making a decision on Thursday after our urologist appointment.
