Re: January Randoms

  • Yes it was @ButterMyBiscuit's comment, my quote box failed.

@LinzerBinzer my father in law is in the 'sex determines gender' camp and it is a MAJOR point of contention between the two of us. He is one of those guys who thinks gay people are 'sick' but probably watches lesbian porn.

My husband loves his father dearly but doesn't share his extreme viewpoints. I know my husband would struggle if we had a child identify as transgender, but not to the point where it would ruin their relationship. He has said multiple times that he 'doesn't get' how someone could feel they were born the wrong sex, and I tell him he is lucky to not have to feel that way. I 'don't get it' either, because I've never had to experience it, the same with starvation, discrimination, war, etc. My husband is very 'live and let live', no issues with gay people openly serving/getting married/having rights, his only issue with trans individuals openly serving is how difficult it is to get necessary medical treatment in a war zone (where he often had to do trade with locals for livestock because they couldn't get food supply drops). As long as someone isn't trying to steal his possessions, kill him/me/the dogs, take his guns, or force religious beliefs on him he isn't terribly threatened by anything.

Eta: He also sides with me on nearly everything (unless I am being unreasonable). His dad and I normally avoid talking about things that we disagree on.
  • totally agree we shouldn't feel weird about saying the word sex for its proper use. However, saying "sex reveal party" just has a weird brain glitch for me like you're saying "sex party" and that's not the impression I'd want to give to people. LOL!

Now, I don't know one single person IRL that has gender identity issues. I'm sure I would be more sensitive to the use of the appropriate term in that case- especially around them.

I've mentioned it before, but I was a huge advocate for the term "sex" on HR reports I used to do but my 65 y.o. male boss was completely opposed. So our reports displayed "gender". I had a whole conversation with him about why that was inaccurate. He, of course, was completely dumbfounded b/c in his mind sex=gender (but just a "softer" word).

I guess, my point was, in my example above, it actually made a difference. I don't think it really does for the poster's family reveal video, unless she has transgender people she knows that she could be offending.
  • @Nerdchild I dont think I really want to know the answer to this question but how do you know about his preferences in porn? -- sorry I realize that was off topic. I was very lucky to grow up in a house that was very open and accepting, and I hope that my child feels the same way about the home that DH and I are building.
  • @mckcak23 I said 'probably' just based on how he reacts to women rubbing on eachother during commercials and promos. Also, most of his anti-gay speech is directed at gay men. Just a shot in the dark guess.
  • @Nerdchild so sorry for your friend. Both issues (gender identity and depression) can be so debilitating to all facets of life. It sounds like he has a good support in your friendship, at least. I can't imagine a) dealing with both issues and then b) receiving backlash from people that should be there to support me.
  • @quartz02 He lost a lot of friend and family support. He has addiction issues on top of gender identity and depression, so he feels extremely isolated. When he announced I apologized in advance for any improper pronoun used while my brain got accustomed to the switch, and he's been great about forgiving my occasional slip up.
  • @Nerdchild I completely overlooked that word. I was playing over the different types of conversations in my head that would have to happen to get to that bit of information. Or the thought of how my head spins when people have the view point of it is ok for two women to be together but it is totally wrong for two men (again NOT my viewpoint).
  • @mckcak23 Totally understandable. It baffles me too. I'm surprised my fil has never mentioned his porn preference because he is pretty nonchalant about expressing his attraction to Hooters waitresses or commenting on the bodies of women when we are grabbing dinner with him.

@quartz02 I think it's fine to have gender instead of sex on forms as long as the options are "girl" "boy" "non-binary" or "other" ;)

I feel like I should have a gif response for "sex party" ... haha. Something with people swinging shirts over their heads like helicopters, of course...

If you have names picked, maybe make it a name reveal party? That tells everyone the sex, you can play all the same games etc. But you didn't have to make "sex party" invitations. Lol

Oh oh! Ummm...Pink or Blue Party? Sit or Stand Party?(Get it?) Tux or Gown Party? The 'do you think we'll need one of those weird penis covers for diaper changes' party?

The last one is my favorite. My husband found the little penis sheilds at Babies'r'us and I had to explain what they were for. He just stared at them for a minute, said 'I'm done for today' and walked away.

I've got two boys. I've never been peed on. Lol. I don't think the "peepee teepee" is necessary.
  • @TattoosandLace that cake is hilarious! A great tongue-in-cheek way to bring the conversation into the party, actually! I may use that!!!

Name reveal party is very interesting, too (if you know which name you'd use). We're dead set on a boy name but for the girl name we may need to wait until we meet her.
  • @ButterMyBiscuit I really want a she-wee.

I have a daughter and have been peed on a MILLION times!  I didn't think that happened with girls, apparently it does.

  • @DarkCat Our little bugger measured 2 days behind as well but they said it wasn't enough of a difference to change the due date. I would stick with your original! Besides, all babies measure differently when they come out anyway!

I have a boy and got peed on a lot! Those things don't help.
  • @Taymiller I got peed on all the time. He even peed in his own mouth once.

omg me too! He spit up in my mouth too.

My husband had about the same reaction. All of a sudden I heard him go, "Wait wait wait... What are the baby cups for?!?"
  • Random question: Anyone buy a maternity swimsuit or planning to? Know of anywhere that sells them in-store? Target has cute ones online but I'm such an inconsistent size I'd rather try on...

My friend got hers from Target .. In store. That's all I know of too. I'll definitely need a maternity swimsuit this year! That's where I plan on looking first. Kohls probably has some as well!

I did on Amazon. I bought in my next size up and it got it and it barely covers my nipple. I just returned it. I have another one on the way so I hope it is better.
  • @noelietrex our honey moon is at the end of March beginning of April and I just plan on rocking whatever blump I have. And I figure by June/July I will be at the "i don't give a f" phase to spend money on one. I've seen cute ones on Zulily though, and I would try any department store.

Her retort: C&H (the sugar company here) makes just as good of sugar as Jesus does."

    And then.
"Give her some of this (blueberry angel food cake). It's good for her. It's egg."
Wtf no. It's like 80% sugar.
  • @noelietrex I wore a regular bikini my whole pregnancy, but it was one that would be too big for me normally. (A friend gave it to me, non-maternity)
  • @noelietrex Target definitely had them two years ago, but you probably have to wait until the spring. I bought mine at Destination Maternity. That was last pregnancy though. Stores might not have them yet because it's not swimming season.

Your MIL is why my daughter's hepatologist sees kids almost exclusively for "fatty liver." Just saying.
  • @MotherOfDucks I question how my husband and his siblings survived. I just don't even understand anymore. I called my pseudo mom today about DD's daughter referring us to a specialist (unrelated to liver;) ) and was telling her about MIL's latest dumb remarks and all she could say was "I hope I never meet this lady because I just won't be able to handle her stupidity."
