  • How important is it to buckle the baby in the rock n play? She hates the world if she isn't swaddled, and she can't be properly buckled in.
  • Loading the player...
  • We don't buckle in the RNP.
  • We don't buckle in either....I have a hard time envisioning my 12 day old finding a way to fall out of it so I feel comfortable with that for now, lol.

Had our first baby, Samuel Robert, on April 17, 2014!

  • I have an Ergo but not the infant insert. I've seen that some people use it with a rolled up blanket instead which is fine but how can I make sure LOs head is still supported? I've been trying finding a good how to video but all the babies are older and have some head control.
  • A friend of mine (mother of two) said that newborns can't see your eyes if you are wearing glasses. Has anyone else heard this? I've been wearing my glasses almost daily for weeks and I'll feel bad if it's true!

  • When do you start counting time in labor? Is it from your first painful contraction? Or when they become rhythmic and timeable??

CD moms: When washing CDs, can I also add other laundry? Like if DS has a blowout, can I wash his outfit in the same load? I don't mean filling the washer to capacity, just adding a onsie, burp cloth, or other small things. Is there a rule of thumb on how full you should limit the washer since you want the extra water to help clean?
I don't think a few things would make much a of a differnce. I've done it before.

I usually count from when contractions are timeable.

So my labor was 18.5 hours long, which I counted from when I started timing my contractions.

Anyone's baby's gas have a smell strongly of sulfur? I remember it being pretty odorless with DS and DD can clear a room when she passes gas right now. Her poops also have a smell of sulfur but not as bad. She's had like 3 or 4 meconium poops so far and my milk isn't in yet.

  • @nikki912 this LO was smelling up the hospital room. Even the nurse could tell when she'd let one rip. It only lasted a few days- but certainly as long as there is muconiums rather than poops I think it's normal.

  • Does anyone have experience with the baby Bjorn carrier?
My LO has hip problems because of being frank breech for so long and our orthopedic doctor said the Bjorn would hold baby in an acceptable position. The thing is, when I put her in it her head seems to bobble around a lot if I walk faster than a snails pace. I've tried to google videos but most show how to put it on which isn't my question.
I guess I just don't know how her head is suppose to be positioned. It bumps off of my chest too much for me to feel comfortable using it.
I also have the ergo with the infant insert but I wasn't sure if the insert would hold her legs in the best position so that's why we went out to get the Bjorn when we found out about her hip problems.
Sorry this is so long winded. I'm just really looking for a way to baby wear and slings/wraps aren't an option with her hips :(
  • I find that recommendation totally bizarre, because in general the Bjorn is the WORST carrier for hip positioning. It's a "crotch dangler", which is bad.
The Ergo with the newborn insert should be good though. As newborns you want their legs to be in the "froggy" position.

Eta: Actually. Why did the dr recommend the Bjorn? Are her legs supposed to be straight because they were bent too much in the womb? I'm confused now and don't want to tell you the wrong thing.

She has hip dysplasia and her legs are suppose to be in the froggy position. She has a (pavlik) harness which she was wearing 24/7 but is now only wearing it at night.
Ugh! It wasn't the actual doctor that said to get the Bjorn but the assistant. She said the moby, Bjorn and ergo were all good but the Bjorn was the one most recommended by orthopedic doctors.
I wish I asked this board earlier but everytime I thought of the harness it made me break down in tears. I just feel so badly for my LO. I'm doing better now that her hips are showing that the harness is helping!
  • Unless she meant the Bjorn One....which is totally different than the regular one. Granted I still have an inside baby but that's what we ended up getting because of the difference. Maybe that's what she meant?

  • I will mention that the assistant said all three were good when in fact it seems the Bjorn is not a good fit.
Ill try out the ergo today. Hopefully I won't have the same problem with my LO having a "bobble head".
I appreciate everyone's input on the carrier and hip positioning.
  • My pedi said we can stop waking LO to eat but sometimes he will go 6 hours between bottles at night. I am worried that 6 hours is still too long at 1 month old. Is there a point that you still wake LO to eat? I really like his every 4 hour schedule and I hate when it gets off because he sleeps through. Is it unrealistic to want to keep a schedule at this age?

FWIW, my 2 week old sleeps for 6 hour stretches every night, wakes up from it happy and ready to eat (not over-hungry and fussy) and is well over her birth weight. I wouldn't sweat it unless your doctor is concerned about how much LO is eating.
  • @dani+california‌ I just load her up when it's time to go as long as she's eaten recently. It's worked out alright so far. Baby usually sleeps longer with motion, so your odds are good he'll sleep through the walk.

Hip dysplasia family over here. Our orthopod said never use the Bjorn. However I believe the new Bjorn called the Bjorn one is acceptable since they let them be in the froggy position - so maybe the assistant was talking about that? Just never let their feet dangle with pressure on the crotch.

I'm sure glad I asked my question. Thanks for the feedback. The assistant definitely didn't specify and when I asked (via email) I sent a link to the regular one.
Is it your newborn with hip dysplasia? I hope things are healing nicely.

ETA: if you use a carrier which one do you use?

As of right now neither of my children have it. Phew. But both my brother and I have mild dysplasia. My dad and his brothers all had severe dysplasia (requiring surgery at some point in their life). My grandma had severe dysplasia. So it's a paranoia for us and both children will get xrayed a couple of times in their childhood. The newborn shows no signs yet with manual manipulation but we do the scan when she hits 6 weeks to know for sure.

I use the ktan right now but probably not for very long since it's tight. Then the ergo for anything longer than 30 minutes or the mei tai if a quick carry.
I hope your newborn is in the clear!
  • If you're wearing baby and they fall asleep, do you take them out to out them down? My LO is 4 weeks old and I would like to start baby wearing around the home but am not sure how long my back would let me do it for..

  • Sorry guys... I tried to search to find an answer but so many people already have their LOs and I can't find anything specific. I lost my mucus plug today, but it still feels like every 5-10 min that some liquid is coming out. Is this still part if it or could the trickle be my water? Odorless, mostly colorless. I guess I'm wondering how much liquid will a actually come out when my water breaks. I feel like this is probably not it, but don't want to miss something.

  • Our hard water turns everything orange. I would say that they are probably fine. We had to get a water softener and that made our water not orange. I literally ruined I dont know how many shirts (whites mainly) and other items because they got stained from our orange water. We had dishes that are also stained. I would say they are probably fine to use - usually the orange comes from high iron content in the water.

If I boil water for formula bottles, let it cool and then put it in sterilized bottles without formula, how long is the water good for?

Trying to figure out if I can leave the bottles on the counter un-mixed, and just add the formula as we need them...or if we should mix the formula in the bottles and put them all in the fridge. It's just the first way eliminates the need to warm the bottles, but DH is weary of leaving the water in there for too long.

I boil a pot of water each morning and make enough for the day plus her middle of the night feeding and two bottles for the next day (using water from the day before). I leave the pre-measured water in the bottles and prepare then as needed throughout the day. After I put her down for the night (around 10/11) I add formula to three bottles of water and refrigerate so in the middle of the night I'm not having to prep bottles. Once she wakes up, I put the bottle in the warmer while I'm hanging her diaper. By the time I'm fine, bottle is warm, she eats and we're back to bed.

Wow that turned in to quite the novel lol hope it makes sense!

Eta during the day I leave the water in the bottles on the counter

Does everyone boil water for formula bottles? Is it a fluoride concern or a tap water quality issue?

Our tap water is drinkable but the formula I use says to boil the water so I err on the side of caution and boil.

Is anyone doing vitamin D drops? My pedi recommended them for my LO and I gave them to him tonight, and I really don't like them. Super sugary and it's a big dose (400mg). I'm thinking of skipping it but am afraid of skipping something super vital.

There's another version- carlson's D Drops- they're at whole foods or online and you only need one drop of them for the day- you can drop it onto your nipple or the bottles nipple and you're done. Way less sugar, way less volume.
