Gestational Diabetes Check in

Re: Gestational Diabetes Check in

  • sorry about the long rant to come. I just got called by the scheduling nurse and I'm all fired up because they had to change my appointment schedule again. I told them that I cannot change to the appointment time they want to set up for me that I have back to back meetings and that I've already rescheduled them once to accommodate the doctor's appointment schedule. I explained that I understand they want to see me 2 times a week but that I really couldn't make the times they have work without jeopardizing my job. I'd just have to be in once that week and then resume the 2 times a week the following week. She went off on me. started yelling and I told her that I really couldn't do anything more. I provided the times I could do for that week and asked her to call me back with a different solution if they had one, otherwise I'd just have to not see the doctor 2 times that week. I thought it was reasonable and didn't raise my voice but I'm tired of being bullied.

I'm usually pretty tolerant when it comes to doing what I need to for this pregnancy. I changed my fitness plan (no more running, and pretty much no more cardio), changed my diet (no sushi, no caffeine, blah blah), changed my work schedule to lessen my hours (from 11-12 hour days and weekends to 8 hour days no weekends), gave up a promotion that would have taken me out of the country for the end of my pregnancy (huge career opportunity. I was bummed), gave up the conferences I needed to fly across the country for, postposed a certification exam I've been studying for almost a year to pass, changed my diet again for the GD and test my blood sugar 4 times a day. I love this baby, I want this baby, and I want her healthy.

I guess I'm just tired of people pointing fingers and saying how could you possibly consider doing something other than what the doctors ask if you love your baby. I get that I had a stillbirth at 24 weeks prior to this pregnancy and I need to be careful. I really do. But this pregnancy has been pretty darn stable and I resent being told I'm not putting my baby first. I need to keep my job. I need to have money to pay for this baby and every single test I do she's just fine. very active and my amniotic levels are good. granted she's giant and measuring almost 2 weeks ahead of schedule but I cannot help that. No one can tell me this baby is in any danger or distress so why the freaking fuss over 1 appointment??

Anyone else feel like your doctors have used your gestational diabetes to brow beat or pressure you into things that you never would have let them talk you into before? like being induced early or coming in for multiple tests that really don't feel necessary?

If you made it to the end of this rant you deserve chocolate cake and a glass of wine. Love you girls! sorry to be such a beast today.

  • I feel really lucky that I have access to the care I do so I HAVENT been treated like some of you ladies, but if I got that phone call I would be super pissed!!! Missing one appt is not putting your baby at risk, for Pete's sake. Twice a week is excessive, IMO. Especially if your sugar has been well controlled. Good for you for sticking up for yourself and not being bullied.

((Hugs)) @playingonadream‌ - of course you want the best for your baby! I would have been upset by that phone call too! I would definitely talk to your dr about the responses you are getting from his/her staff. That is uncalled for. Best of luck.

Edited b/c I posted too soon
  • @playingonadream - I personally would be calling back and speaking to the scheduling nurse's supervisor about how she spoke with you. (Though I have personally taken on a whole new attitude of "I'm pregnant, and you better not be treating me like cr-p.").

I also agree with you that GD seems (with the exception of more extreme cases) like an excuse to order extra everything.  I understand the concern to an extent, but yes, it does seem like some doctors go overboard.  Not sure if it's a liability issue or (about to sound like my mother, and usually roll my eyes at this remark) an opportunity for them to keep billing your insurance.

It sounds like you are doing an amazing job taking care of your LO, and yes, appointments twice a week seem excessive.  I will end up with two growth ultrasounds because of GD, but I'm okay with that at the end b/c I like to see what LO is up to.  However, if they tried to push any more than that, I would have issues (sugars are in check with diet, baby is a little on the larger side - 69th percentile - but not a concern).

Hang in there... and in a few more weeks, we can all have chocolate cake and wine!

  • UGH that is so frustrating! I am so so sorry @playingonadream and Melody that you are having such a difficult time.

GD is already pretty stressful and having to deal with all of that on top of everything else is just annoying!

  • I really wish that our docs and nurses read these threads. I feel like most of the practitioners I have dealt with really do want what's best for the baby, deep down, but they seem to be missing the forest for the trees. The more they treat us like crap, and the more they insist in treatments and procedures with no real explanation, and the more they blow off our concerns and experiences, the less their patients are going to listen to what they have to say or do what they're told.

I am so over all of this. The next time my GD nurse tells me that I'm endangering my baby by not sending her my numbers spreadsheet on time, I'm probably going flip my shit.

  • You ladies are all awesome. Thanks for the support. I do my best to be pleasant and friendly with this staff. I am going to have them staring at my nether regions and working with me to bring my baby into this world so I'm trying really hard not to be a raging B*tch.

I'm just glad to hear that maybe I'm not just super sensitive and that its not crazy to think that missing one appointment isn't the end of the world. its not even one of the testing appointments. Its just the 15 minutes appointment where the MW asks me if everything is going ok and if I am having any bleeding, contractions etc. If I were I'd call and make an emergency appointment or go to the hospital. Ugg,

@playingonadream - this. All of this. My husband and I had this exact conversation this morning. How does the medical community not understand needing to work to pay the bills and wanting the best care for our child is not mutually exclusive?! I am fortunate that I work for the family business and can take off random times to accommodate the scheduling (while it is a major burden on everyone else, it is do-able). Others aren't so lucky. How dare the person you talked to treat you that way! Not to mention that person most likely isn't experiencing the awful hormones, aches and pains plus all the emotions you are experiencing during this pregnancy. Ugh. Here's a link to Alicia Keys singing the Gummi Bears theme song. I hope it makes you feel a little better (helped me). https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BW2NuxOC8fU

I'm so sorry you're going through this too. Gummi Bears! I loved that show as a kid. mad eme smile thank you so much!

  • My unofficial goal now is that whatever doctor arrives for my delivery thinks "ah man, it's HER."

I've started questioning everything and demanding explainations from my doctors if anything is up.  But actually, I've found the last few visits (with the exception of the wacky GD nurse who was beyond reasoning) is that the doctors seem more engaged when I do question and explain my reasoning for questioning.  It almost seems like they appreciate me asking legitimate things instead of vague, open-ended questions.

The best, though, was when I complained about the illogical GD nurse, and the doctor actually sat down and had a conversation with me about it.  It's a very high volume practice, and I never experienced that at earlier appointments.

  • I'm sorry you have to go thru that also! These doctors and nurses tend to forget that you are a human with responsibilities. They can treat you like you're just another file in their office. The next time you need to remind them that YOU pay THEIR salary by choosing to stay with their practice and that means you deserve a little patience and respect! I am sure you have other options for prenatal care in your area, as do other moms who may or may not ask you for a referral!
  • Personally I find the "I pay your salary" approach hardly every encourages people to treat you with respect, but I can understand the sentiment!

  • Jesster11 being a nurse I typically know which questions to ask and when to ask them. I have found pregnancy to be the most irrational of all the divisions of medicine. No where else in medicine is it ok to say "because I say so" or "that's our practice policy". I worked in oncology for years and if I had told a patient you need to have this regimen of chemo and they asked why and the only answer I could give is "its our standard practice" people would have laughed all the way to another doctor.

I'm not well versed in maternity, OB or NICU care but I know enough to ask questions. I also know that some nurses will drag their feet when providing care for certain troublesome patients. It is not unheard of for that your request to get "dropped" to the bottom of the pile and you have to wait an extra hour for pain medication. That type of thing.

I find that being assertive and inquisitive to be rewarded but more than that to get the opposite.

That's my indulgence. I let myself have one every so often, totally cures my cravings.

Other treats for me are chicken nuggets, a burger, flavored greek yogurt, or lately I can have a little bit of ice cream or an ice cream sandwich a couple of hours after dinner without wrecking my fasting sugar the next day (seriously I have no idea why but I'm very pleased).  I eat dinner early and keep it pretty low carb so I can squeeze it in :)

  • Work had a shower for me today & I totally went off the GD reservation. Like ate handfuls of Swedish fish & 2 cupcakes. I feel like garbage right now, but damn it felt good at the time.
  • My numbers were low all day (80s - so not TOO low, a good low) but I really overdid it at the party.  I just couldn't help myself.  The people I work with put SO much amazing effort in to the shower....it would have been rude not to eat, right?  :D  In hindsight, I could have used a little more restraint...but it won't be happening again during the pregnancy.
  • One time isn't going to hurt anything, but sorry you feel crummy!!

  • Holy smokes, our power was out this morning and we went and got biscuits at mcdonalds. Even though it's only 30g carbs I was at 160 after an hour! That's an all time high!

  • I all of a sudden got positive ketones again this morning. I don't think I can eat any more carbs than I do. Maybe I'll have a big bowl of pasta tonight

what are you expected to be at after one hour? My recommendation is 7.5  (online conversion 135) so that does seem a bit high but not too bad - I wouldn't worry too much!

I'm supposed to be under 130 at an hour. I'm not worried, and I obviously knew it wasn't exactly on the diet, but it made me laugh. At two hours I was already at 122, so it couldn't have been that bad :)

  • Is anyone else tired of trying to figure out the puzzle of what you can and can't eat??? I had a splurge day, treated myself to a huge plate of spaghetti, ate the garlic bread also, then stopped for a scoop of coffee ice cream (yes it was amazing, I must admit). Figured I blew my number but F--- it, two hours later I was at 113!!! (I have to be under 120 at the two hour mark)
Two days ago I had a protein bar with a banana for breakfast and was at 125.
This just doesn't make sense to me!
  • My pharmacy is out of my test strips and won't have any in until saturday...is it terrible that I just want to throw the entire diet out the window until then and eat croissants, French fries, risotto, and cake until then??
    image
  • Yeah I can get away with a lt more later in the day then I can at breakfast. I think I could also get away with a lot more if I was testing at two hours instead of one hour, darnit!!

My numbers would be ridiculously high if I tested at 1 hour! I test two hours from when I finish eating.

  • I wonder what the difference is, why do some test at an hour and some at two? Maybe just some doctors are stricter?
  • Yeah just different protocols. I only have to be under 130 after an hour and I think two hours is usually 120 (although when I've been over after an hour and retested at two hours I've never ever been over 120 at two hours so I still say humph!)

  • Stress hit me today so I decided to have a brownie after dinner to try to lower my morning ketones. I was only 130 after 2 hrs so not as bad as I thought I would be. Does anyone else get randomly positive ketones?
  • Ketones can happen for all sorts of reasons, including not eating enough calories, period. It's also normal to go through periods where you're producing ketones, particularly over night. They're not always related to carb restriction.

  • And blood sugar that isn't controlled can cause ketones, too.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I was back to negative ketones this morning and my normal 74 morning reading. 4 more weeks to go!
  • I got the clear to only test twice a day today!!! Yay!!

@Rrrrrachel‌ - I don't know what it is about McDonalds breakfast, but that place shoots my numbers up ridiculously high too
  • Gtk :). I can actually do a double cheeseburger from there and be ok. Idk what it is about the biscuit!

  • I didn't even have the biscuit! I had the MCMuffin and a burrito!
  • I just looked it up and the biscuit was actually 42g carb. I thought it was closer to 30. Whoops! I should've had an egg mc muffin I guess.

Egg mcmuffins always make my sugar spike, it's got to be something they do because I can make the exact same thing at home and numbers are fine, but if I order one from Mcdonald's, my sugar will be over 200 guaranteed.

  • I'm so looking forward to not poking my fingers anymore. Yes, I want to eat like a real person again, but I'm sick of the damn finger sticking. You ladies who are doing insulin are real troopers. We are almost done, I tell myself every morning, soon we can drink juice again, no more forced snacks at night, and no more frigging needles.
